Name: Alaric Pierce, now known as Grey
Class: Shaman
Dragon Element: N/A
Age: Lost count somewhere (Actually 29)
Born in: Ilia
Appearance: Grey currently is a rather unhealthy looking man who would be described as in his late twenties or early thirties. He would actually look younger, but the dark rings under his silver eyes from many sleepless nights and his somewhat gaunt frame from forgetting to eat age him considerably. His years of travel have also taken their toll in this regard. His brown hair is usually long and unkempt, not being much of a concern in his mind. His skin is more on the pale side in recent years, and is covered in several scars from blades of all sorts. He prefers to dress normally, so as not to draw attention to himself, though Ilian styles are what he generally defaults to out of habit.
Personality: Years upon years of deep study into darkness magics have sapped Grey of two noticeable traits - His memory, and much of his emotional capacity. On the surface he appears as an amicable and helpful individual, who loves both learning and teaching. At his core he has a strong desire to help and protect those who cannot do so for themselves. In recent years, however, he cannot remember the best ways of doing so, or who he already has helped in this capacity. He has adapted to this by going with the flow, even if he didn't consciously decide to do so. People will get upset at him when he forgets their names within hours, and he frequently will get lost even during daily routines, but he takes it in stride and keeps a smile as he goes on his way.
His most important memories have a habit of coming and going, and when they come he focuses on them at the expense of almost everything else. If something manages to stick with him strongly enough to pervade the darkness that hangs in his mind, he clings to it as one of his only senses of identity, and will fight to the death to defend it.
History: The man who now only goes by Grey was born to a small family that lived in a small village, between Modlin and Remi. The village was founded during a time of relative peace, but the location was in an odd situation, economically. While close enough to Remi to have access to trade, it was also close enough to Modlin to dissuade caravans from visiting, for fear of bandits. As such, their family grew up with more trying times than not.
When he was ten years of age, an Etrurian scholar who passed through made friends with his family, and offered to teach both he and his brother Adrian the secrets of magic in exchange for his father's help with her own journey. This became a critical deciding point in Grey's life, as his mind would be forever altered from the decision - While his brother studied the secrets of Anima magic, he took to the study of Darkness.
It came to be that the scholar settled in their village, after having completed her own journey. At this point their studies began in earnest.
About six years went by before troubles fell upon Elibe, and their teacher decided to take action. During Hargus's Bandit War, the trio set out as mercenaries and adventurers who intended to help defenseless regions against bandits with their magic. They were never prominent figures, though they did see combat.
During the bandit war, their mentor went missing without explanation, never to be seen again. The siblings tried to track her down, but without luck. During this point, they had success against several bandits during their search.
Almost a year had gone by since that point, and the two had made their own way and learned as much as they could, and even gained some renown of their own. His brother came to be knighted by Ilia, and went on to live a more military life. Grey, however, intended to continue following after their teacher. The two parted ways fondly, promising to meet once more.
Unfortunately, his continued studies of the darkness had robbed him of a very precious thing - His capacity for memory was dwindling day by day. Along the way to Etruria he got lost, wandering circles around Sacae, Lycia, and Bern during the time of Bern's Aggression and Kraft's Conquest. He managed to avoid any sort of involvement with these affairs, aside from protecting himself from time to time. He settled very briefly at the edge of Nabata after tiring of wandering, and even took an apprentice, but it was never meant to last. He eventually forgot everything that he was - His name, his age, his family, many of his travels, all were replaced by a hazy grey that he took his name from.
And now, he wanders yet again, chasing after whatever memories flicker by, or in search of what was lost.
NPC fight: If Grey gets into a fight, normally that means he's done something wrong. Lately, he has become more the sort to avoid fighting by whatever means necessary, even at what most would consider the expense of his pride.
When he does fight, he approaches a battle with a very mercenary mindset, as instilled in him by his father and mentor both. The goal is to win, not win honorably. Honor doesn't keep you alive. Choose your targets strategically, work with whatever team you have available to maximize efficiency. If you're alone, don't get into a fight to begin with. His years of magical study have led him to be more effective than not with whatever spells he might end up using. Practically speaking, he prefers to take up a heavy hitter role, as that was what he was most used to doing growing up. If a fight turns desperate, he is not above retreat, though it would not be too difficult to outpace him in terms of his speed. If need be, he will fight with non-magical means. He is no stranger to throwing a punch or using dirty tricks.
He prefers to work with other magic users, but is always glad to have someone armored playing the role of a shield.
PC fight: (Sample)
The battlefield was a haze, literally and mentally. The dust kicked up by the horsemen charging weighed heavy in the air, the shouts of combatants on all sides. He was separated. Grey, normally a composed man, felt a tug of panic. He looked left to right, for his mentor, for his brother, for the Ilian soldiers. There was no one.
No one, except for a lone axeman, glaring in his direction. His posture screamed his murderous intent.
Grey already had his tome opened. This man was clearly something different than the average bandit. Something more, something powerful. He had to fight seriously, or he knew he'd be carved by that axe within seconds. The darkness swelled around him as he chanted, concentrating into a ball of inky black that ripped through the dusty air towards his target, hoping to end the fight before the man could even charge.
If he didn't end it here, his odds looked grim.
