Eqwin woke up. It was still early in the morning, and he had some time before he'd have to get out of bed. Thoughts of what happened yesterday filled his mind. He went on border patrol, met some nice Sacaen ladies, fought a monster and lived, and made some friends. It was overall a pretty eventful day. He decided to get out of bed, brush his teeth, bathe, and do other things according to his usual morning routine. After he was done with his regular routine, he got as prepared for his squirely duties as he could without his armor. He forgot that he nearly died yesterday, had Lady Doreen not pulled him away from a revenant's attack. He told his parents about his day yesterday, but omitted that part. Even if he was close to harm, he didn't feel too bothered. It was the bad part of being a knight, right? You get to serve and protect the weak, and in return you replace their lives on the line with your own. Of course, in that situation, he was the weak, but that didn't change a thing in his eyes. He was glad to experience such a thing early so he wouldn't be too nervous later. He got prepared, got his horse Thoron equipped with her own armor and saddlebags, and then rode out to the army's outpost in his town. When he got there, he stopped Thoron, let her sit down, and went in. He wondered what Sir Argol had for him today. Training? Exercise?
"Are you sure you can't take border patrol for today?" Eqwin overheard Sir Argol ask someone. He waited outside of the room, since he felt it'd be rude to intrude on their conversation. He didn't even notice he was unintentionally eavesdropping.
"Yes, sir. I won't be able to attend to my knightly duties today, either." The female knight he was speaking to said.
"Is it about your grandma again?" Sir Argol sighed.
"Yes.." The other knight said.
"Alright... Head home to her soon. Tell her I said hello too, will ya'?" He sighed. "You have my permission to leave for the day."
"Thank you very much sir." The female knight left the room and headed straight for the outpost's exit, not even noticing Eqwin eavesdropping. Eqwin entered the room soon after.
"Good morning, Sir Argol!" He said. "What do we have today?"
"Good morning, Eqwin. I had some higher tier training planned, but something came up. Jeffrey is still sick, so we need someone to cover for him in border patrol. I was gonna get Isabelle to do it like she finished up for you yesterday, but she isn't available today. Worse yet, she's not available for her own duties either, so I'll have to cover for her. Do you think you could take his border patrol for him again today?" Sir Argol asked.
"Of course-!" Eqwin excitedly said, before being interrupted.
"However!" Sir Argol butted in. "Since I also have my own work, I won't be able to check and wait for you, so no detours like yesterday. In addition, if you get attacked by monsters again today, I won't be able to swoop in and save you either. You'll have to rely on the soldiers waiting at the outpost. Do you understand?"
"Um.. Of course, sir." Eqwin said, less enthusiastic now. "Uh... What about my armor, sir?"
"Oh, I almost forgot. They haven't repaired it yet, so for today you'll be borrowing Jeffrey's." Sir Argol said, and Eqwin perked up immediately.
"The actual Etrurian regular cavalry's armor?!" He exclaimed.
"Yes. I'm expecting you to do your best, and return it in one piece. Remember that you're still a squire, and you should run from anything you can't handle. Any big threats must be reported to the nearest outpost and then the nearest lord. Jeffrey's armor is in the storage room. Go there to put it on, and then head out to the first outpost unless you have other preparations you need to do. I'll be heading out now. Take care, Eqwin."
"O-of course, sir!" Eqwin said. "You take care too, sir. Have a nice day!" He said, waving as Sir Argol left the outpost. He headed into the storage room, and saw the armor. It looked different from his own- a darker green, with shinier outlining. As opposed to himself, he heard that Jeffrey was a light cavalry. His armor would work all the same for the squire, however. He donned it, and wished there was a mirror for him to look in. The most important part, however, was the helmet. He didn't personally have one, but the regular cavalryman armor did. He grabbed the helmet, made sure nothing was inside it, and then donned it. He felt like a completely different person. It was a bit lighter than his own, actually. He felt stronger, more formidable, more powerful in this armor. He felt like he could take on any monster that posed a threat to his country, people, and family! He knew he couldn't, but he felt that way. He exited the outpost after speaking with a soldier stationed there, and went to Thoron. She was surprised to see him wearing something different from his usual attire, but she didn't think he was a different person or anything like that. He got on her and rode to the first outpost. After explaining the situation, he started on his mission.
Eqwin rode along the border with his horse, Thoron. It was a nice day today. There were some clouds, providing an ample amount of shade. He kept a watchful eye out. He had just done this for the first time yesterday, so he was still new, but he still knew what to do. He looked down at the crest of Saint Elimine displayed proudly on his chest. This job was meant to watch out for anything suspicious coming from the country of Sacae, be it monster or man. It was the first line of defense for the Etrurian people, and here he was. He was currently the first thing that would stand between his people and anything hostile. Of course, he was meant to report anything Sacaen as well, but he couldn't do so in good conscious. He knew there were some good people in Sacae, and that not everyone coming from the country was Sacaen. He'd just have to interact with anybody he saw, and trust his judgement.

What was she doing? What WAS she doing? How the hell did she end up all this far north? And back in Etruria of all places. No. No. She shouldn't be here. If she got caught coming back into the territory, be branded a traitor to her nation, and sent to the gallows. The young sage abandoned Etruria in favor of Lycia. And she wasn't 100% sure of the repercussions of just up and leaving one's nationalist home country. Plus all of her paperwork to prove she was a Etrurian citizen had long since expired. But, ugh. She couldn't ignore the signs. The monster Doogs she had been tracking have made their way northwards. If they were a breeding pair, it could spell disaster for the small communities that dotted the borders. And with Etruria being the way it was, she knew that any cries for help from the people here would fall on deaf ears. The nation as a whole, had bigger things to deal with than the follies of towns that can be easily put to the torch from either Sacae or Etruria.
And so she stood there for a moment. Just glaring at the tracks on the ground. The sage herself was donned in her usual traveler's gear. Which consisted of her trousers, a plain cotton long sleeved tunic, boots, a compressive but intricately designed corset, her cloak, and long finger less leather gloves. Her sages hood was over her head, and a pair of partially broken goggles, kept the hood in place. She had her big ol traveler's bag on her shoulder, and her bottled little eletrical elemental, safety attached to her hip. her hair was tied up in a ponytail underneath her hood. She had a small piece of cloth tied around her head, in order to hide her feminine face.
She looked out in the direction of the tracks and grimaced. She had to follow them. She HAD to put a stop to the doogs. It didn't matter how well patrolled the borders were now. Doogs were smart. Smarter than regular wolves and twice as ferocious. All they would need is one slip.. and they could overwhelm even the strongest of guards. She sighed. And begrudgingly followed the tracks into the Eturian side of the borders.

Eqwin put one hand on his chin, and thought a bit more about what was currently happening. He was doing border patrol again today, but that much is less important than some other things. He was going to inevitably be passing the same areas as yesterday, especially the spot with all the monsters. If they had a nest, then he could very well encounter more of them. He hoped not, but in this armor he was sure that he would be able to fend them off. Not only was it stronger than his normal set, but his spirits were also through the roof right now. According to Lady Doreen, he was gigantic. He must really look like a normal soldier right now, him and his horse- Eqwin just realized that Thoron was wearing the same old armor. He hoped that her's was more sturdy than his. After all, it was armor for a horse. Even if the army's blacksmiths could use less desirable materials, they might as well just make normal horse armor for all the time and effort they were using. He'd just assume it was like his normal set. This worried him. He was protected, but gods knew that she wasn't. Were revenants just incredibly dangerous? Maybe his normal armor was good and they were just that strong. Again, he'd just assume her armor was weak. He rode on, less worried than yesterday, but more worried than he was at first today. He thought that he at least didn't have to worry about bandits. Bandits wouldn't try to attack an Etrurian soldier. He thought to himself for a second. He knew revenants were undead, and bonewalkers were as well, but what about that dog thing that Sir Argol speared yesterday? He believed that it was called a "Mauthe Doog". Was it undead? It was a monster, sure, but... Eqwin wasn't sure what he was thinking. How did it fit in ecosystems? What did it eat? Did anything eat it? He thought that a bear might be able to beat one. In that case... Would that bear eat it? How would it taste? Is it even edible? Was thinking like this some form of heresy against Saint Elimine? No, he felt that the Saint wouldn't judge someone for thinking. People would have already turned into revenants in their houses if thinking could curse them.
Eqwin snapped out of his thoughts when he realized he wasn't alone. He looked around and realized he was riding straight at a hooded, cloaked traveler. Ah, his bad. He looked like a soldier right now, so this traveler must be quite intimidated that a soldier of Etruria was riding right at them without saying a word. A greeting and apology was in order. "Greetings, traveler!" He said. "Sorry for silently riding at you like that. I was a bit deep in thought, and didn't notice my surroundings. An honest mistake." He explained the situation to them, and then noticed how suspicious they seemed. Wearing a cloak and some weird hood, this traveler certainly seemed like someone who didn't want to be seen. Being the pure teenager Eqwin was, he took his helmet off to show that he meant no harm. "Are you lost? Do you need any assistance of some kind?" Eqwin felt that asking someone if they needed help was just necessary manners as a patrolling squire. He then remembered his own worries. "I encountered some monsters around here yesterday, so you should really be careful."

Okay. First few steps in.. and things look normal. That blade of grass totally normal. No knights appearing out of thin air to arrest me for trespassing. Alright.. Mila.. we can do this. She took about five more steps before Karma decided to slap her in the face. What lo. Her blissful moment of panicked solace was interrupted by the sounds of hoofbeats and a voice.
OH COME ON! Does the whole country have some sort of invisible alarm that summons knights from thin air or something? The sage turned around to greet the towering figure before her. Stay calm Mila. She thought to herself as she tried really hard not to babble every little anti-kraft thing she did in her life. The knight no the squire who greeted her was a young man with blonde hair on a big horse.
"Uh.. Hello. T-Thanks for not running me over." The sage mentally lamented. By talking out loud, her voice gave her away. Now this young knight knew she was a lone woman, traveling by herself. And Mila knew not all knights were gentlemen. Some were just as ruthless as the slavers and mob bosses. She cleared her throat. Confidence Mila.
"I'm alright young sir. Just making my way through the country side." She stopped talking for a moment. This squire had seen some monsters around here yesterday. Of course he did. She knew that people who live and work here would have probably seen some sort of monster activity. After all.. that's.. exactly what brought her all the way out here. But, the fact that the lad brought it up so quickly, and completely unaware, that monster jargon was sort of her thing. Which meant that she would be forced to keep talking to this young squire. And he would be asking more questions.. and this.. was just.. the beginnings of her getting killed by the law. But, if she didn't say something, then that would make her even more suspicious, and would also lead to her getting murdered. She wished she could curse on the gods for playing such a cruel trick. Just. Stay. Calm.
"Monsters you say? What did they look like?"

Eqwin mentally sighed in relief as the suspicious person conversed with him instead of attacking him. He didn't know much about where he stood on the human food-chain. Throughout his more recent life, he's know Sir Argol as a strong knight that he couldn't hope to seriously stand up to. Just yesterday, he met Lady Lucy, who felled a revenant in just one small blast of magic. The way he saw it, Lady Lucy was a herbivore on this weird human food chain he had in his head. He didn't attack her, so she didn't attack him. He counted Sir Argol as a carnivore, just as the same "species" as himself. He knew that, were he an opponent of Sir Argol's, his only chance would be to run away. Eqwin surmised that this "human food chain" he just thought up was a weird way to think about the fact that he could encounter strong and dangerous people, and that he was relieved that this traveler, apparently female, wasn't one. "Sorry again about that." He said, being overly polite. Well, this politeness was justifiable, as he had nearly trampled the lady with Thoron. He heard her speak of the countryside. He was about to ask where she was headed, but then she asked about the monsters. He completely forgot about his question and rushed to answer hers. "Let's see..." He said as he started thinking again. Hmm... The thing he fought, he remembered was called a "revenant". He remembered thinking about eating a "mauthe doog" so he encountered on of those yesterday.. What else... There was a monster that Sir Argol mentioned but he hadn't seen. Ah! A bone walker, specifically wielding a spear.
"I remember now, ma'am. I encountered a revenant, a mauthe doog, and a bonewalker. The bonewalker wielded a lance." He relayed to her. "Well, I fought the revenant, but my mentor took care of the other two." He corrected himself, only realizing after that he outed himself as a squire. Maybe this lady wasn't attacking him under the assumption that he was an actual knight? No, she seemed honest enough. He doubted she was a bandit, or an assassin, or something like that. "Oh yeah, my name is Eqwin. I'm a squire of Etruria. It's nice to meet you, ma'am." He thought for a second. He told this stranger about the monsters that had appeared recently, asked if she needed help, apologized for almost running her over, gave her his name, title, nationality, gods he sure liked to over share. Maybe he should give her his address and house key too? He laughed a bit to himself at that mental joke. Did he have to do anything else, or could they both be on their merry ways now? Oh yeah, how did mauthe doogs taste? No, that's not what he needed to ask her. He forgot to get an answer for the question of where she's headed, but his mind felt that that question was too important to let rest. Well, he could've profiled her wrongly as a sneaky person. Mages also wear cloaks and hoods and the like. Mages are usually smart too, so she might actually know the answer to this question. This might be the only chance he'd get for a long while to ask someone this. May as well take it.
"I remember that revenants and bonewalkers are undead, but what about mauthe doogs? The one I saw didn't seem to be much more than a large wolf. Are they edible? Is there any side effect to eating the flesh of a mauthe doog? Do they taste good?" He asked the complete and total stranger he had only just met.

Oh this lad is a curious one. Mila was still a tad bit nervous around the young man. The squire introduced himself as Eqwin. Naive but curious. The lad was a veritable fountain of information. It seemed that a variety of monsters had wandered across the borders with no regards to the law.
"Uh.. I'm.. Clover." She introduced herself with her usual alias. She couldn't risk using her real name. She cursed her luck. All this squire had to do was inform his boss that he met a lone woman during his patrols. And that'd be it. But, she couldn't really do anything either. She could.. warp him away. But, that only worked to a distance within eyeshot. And he could easily just run back to her on that horse. If she used her magic to murder him. Then that would make things so much worse. So she wasn't quite sure what to do. Fortunately, the squire kept talking. About other monsters he saw. Specifically about the Mauthe Doog, that she had been tracking. And from what it sounds like he only ran into one. And was really curious about them. To the point where he asked a random stranger about the potential taste of Doog Meat.
"I.. would have no idea. How monster meat tastes like.. nor do I want to know." That was kind of a lie. After that encounter with the large bael in Vinland, she was curious to see what those monster taste like. The locals were eating and hunting them. But, she already knew that those monsters were different then the Elibe variety. She kept staring at Eqwin. The scholar in her really wanted to sit him down and talk all about the monsters. And about her research. But, again, she couldn't. She had to fight to urge.
"Though.. if they do behave like wolves.. they.. might be travelling together in a pack."

"It's nice to meet you, miss Clover." He said. He noticed that "Clover" seemed off somehow. She wasn't just a bit nervous sounding, but she was really named after a plant. Oh well. After meeting someone named "Doreen" the day before, he wasn't going to think too much about names. He was rather disappointed with the lack of info on mauthe doog meat that miss "Clover" gave him. Now that he thought more about it, that really was an outrageous thing to ask a stranger. It was like he just asked her what human flesh tasted like. Mauthe doogs may not be undead, but they were still monsters. He had no doubt about that. He had heard that mauthe doogs worked alongside monsters on any occasion they could, so he highly doubted that they were just really, really big wolves. He'd even experienced them working with monsters. Sir Argol mentioned the bonewalker with the doog yesterday, so they must've had some intention of working together. They even split up, with the doog going after him and the walker going after Sir Argol. The doog took advantage of its speed to try and pursue him, before Sir Argol put a javelin in its neck.
"Hmm... I think they do." He said in response to "Clover"'s talk of them moving in packs. "I remember the one I encountered yesterday was working with the bonewalker, so I doubt they can't do the same with their own kind... In that case, I don't think I can leave you alone in good conscience. May I accompany you to your destination? I have some time to spare on patrol, so I'm sure I can escort you there. I might not be able to beat a mauthe doog, but I'm sure that Thoron here could outrun one with my help." He said to "Clover". Eqwin was a little shocked by how assertive he was being. He hadn't even seen what clothes she was wearing and he was offering to put his duties aside for her. His shock was accompanied by a bit of pride. He certainly got this part of knighthood down. It just seemed natural to offer this person a hand when they might otherwise be torn apart by giant wolves. He thought about his earlier claim. Could he and Thoron really outrun a doog? The one yesterday seemed to be catching up to them before it met its end. No, they'd be able to. Thoron had incredible stamina, so even if the doog was faster he'd probably be able to ward it off with his lance. What if they had more stamina than her? He'd prefer not to think about having to protect himself and Thoron on foot. He could barely hold any defensive stances while on his own two feet. He'd have to worry about leverage, footwork, Et cetera. They probably wouldn't encounter any doogs, though. He was sure that this stranger was also at least somewhat capable. Who in their right mind would wander all the way out here if they were defenseless?

"I'm afraid I.. will have to decline your offer to escort me." She sighed. No point in hiding it now.
"I'm going right into the Lion's den. So to speak." The sage pointed out at the tracks in front of them. Three Distinct Mauthe Doog footprints. The sage bent down and picked up a tuff of orange fur from a bushy grass.
"You've got at least three Doogs out there. If the one you met yesterday was a part of them and that is dead. Then there are two left. If they are a breeding pair.. then the country side will be over run with Doogs before you know it. These things are a blight upon the people and livestock." She shook her head. The sage held up the bit of fur so that Eqwin could see it.
"I hunt these monsters down for a living. It's terribly dangerous. And you.. are a squire. Young and inexperienced. Doogs are smart. They will single you out and pick you right up off your horse. I suggest you.. head back and inform your superiors of the monsters." And pretend you didn't see me. She hoped that her explanation would be enough to deter the young lad from following her any further. She didn't want anyone else around her. Not just due to the difficulty of the situation with Doogs. But, she just didn't want the extra attention. A knight in shiny armor and atop a plump horse, that would be more than enough to attract the attention of a hungry Doog.

After "Clover" was done talking, Eqwin thought for a short while. He had rode Thoron to her limits yesterday, and had also almost died. He was already pushing Thoron a bit much by making her ride again without a day of rest, so going after monsters again already... He couldn't do this. As much as he wanted to go with this lady and make sure she wasn't eaten, he would barely be able to look after himself and his horse in this state. "You're right. I'll do exactly that, ma'am." He said, head hung low. There must be something he could do... He reached into his pouch, and felt around for something. He couldn't give her Sir Argol's notebook, and most of the information would probably be useless to her and he wouldn't feel right giving her the handkerchief Lady Doreen had given him, so that left him with one gift. He pulled something out of his bag and extended his hand out to "Clover". "It's the least I can do, ma'am. Sorry I don't have anything more useful." He opened his hand to reveal a small bag of biscuits, crackers, and other assorted snacks. "Thankfully, I didn't pack a meat based snack today. I would give you some carrots, but they're for my horse. It's not my place to give you her food, sorry." He said. After his gift was accepted or rejected, he began to ride off. "Be careful, and stay safe ma'am!" He said to her, before riding away.
Sir Argol rode down the main road. His gold-colored armor shone in the sun, and he looked around. Yes, this was the spot. He was sure Eqwin had already passed by, so he wouldn't have to decline five offers of help before he got to his assignment. He told his own superiors about the monsters he and Eqwin had encountered yesterday, and was now heading to get rid of them. With the war effort so focused on attack, the actual army didn't "have the time" to take care of domestic threats. If something hostile came marauding through the countryside, no attention was paid to it by those higher up than himself unless it carried a flag. This, of course, meant that things fell onto the shoulders of people like himself, and other stationed soldiers and knights. Sure, they were only here on the border to alert the army of any Sacaen threats, but him and his horse was going to go the extra mile. He'd be damned if he let anything else happen while he just sat on his ass in some cold, stone outpost! While riding to the place he had seen the monsters the day prior, he paid attention to all of his surroundings. He found doog prints, of course, but something else peculiar. Boot prints. Someone else was after the doogs? By the shoe print, he surmised that they weren't the type that a combatant would wear. This person was likely a mage, an idiot, or both. He followed both sets of prints, and then found another. Horse prints joined the set, and then after a bit separated from the doog and boot prints. The boots of course kept following the prints. Were those Eqwin's? He believed so. Eqwin probably met this fool, talked to them for a bit, then rode off. Sir Argol thanked the gods that Eqwin didn't follow this nincompoop into the jaws of certain danger. While he'd hate to have to tell his parents and lose such an promising squire, he'd hate even more to lose a friend. He rode a bit faster after the prints. Hopefully he'd meet this suicidal mage before the doogs did. Much to his relief, he did. He saw a rather short, cloaked figure. "Good morning." He called out to them. Of course, he figured that this person was likely a mage, and could whip a tome out faster than he could ask what they were doing. He kept his guard up. "I hope you don't plan on trying to pet the Mauthe Doogs."

Wow. I wasn't expecting that to work. Mila looked only slightly stunned at the fact that this squire was doing exactly what she asked. Normally when she met new people, they were only ever so eager to throw themselves into the fray of what ever danger lurked about. Usually either out of a sense of both moral and immoral duty. She'd worked with plenty of people who wanted to stick close to her for the prospect of sinning. But, not this time! The squire dismissed himself and went back on his way. Much to Mila's relief. She didn't need an innocent boy's death to weigh on her conscious. Not now. Not ever. She closed her eyes for a moment. The horrifying memory of the Baels razing the town back in Lycia. Another memory of the forest that was filled with the living dead and the den of the damned. She shook her head again. Do not dwell upon those memories Mila.
She sighed softly and returned to her work. She needed to do her job. Other wise these Doogs would ravage innocent people. She decided that now would be the best time to try and camouflage herself. She cracked her knuckles and got to work. She took off her cloak and threw it into the mud. She made sure the outside part was covered in the stuff. Then put the cloak back on. Then she made herself small. She bent down onto the ground and started to recite the flora spell. She put her hand on the ground and focused. The moss and low plants started to crawl up onto the muddy patches of her cloak and prosper. Once she was done she got up off the floor and tried to adjust. The new layer of mud and moss was heavy. She could still move around ok. But it was very uncomfortable. She pulled the hood back up over her and tied it down as best she could. So that the hood wouldn't go flying about in the wind and reveal her green hair.
She took a few more paces forward and continued to follow the trail of the mauthe doogs. Hmm.. I think.. there's a farm nearby. She found evidence of other grazing animals. Horse prints. Sheep. She stopped a bit when she found the body of a dead ewe. Partially buried. A cache. Active decay present. Maybe a few hours. The tracks of the Mauthe Doogs continued on wards. And way off in the distance she could see movement. Something.. ran across the field. Quickly. She wasn't sure if it was a rabbit. A squirrel. Or a doog. But what ever it was.. was still pretty far away. And then the sounds of a person completely stopped her in her tracks. This fool greeted her nicely and all. But, now was not the time!
"SHH" She mouthed. And motioned her finger over her mouth. And then she realized who she was shushing. Of course. A veteran knight. The lad actually did his job and brought back someone competent. Well. I'm screwed. She back tracked away from the mound of dirt and flesh slowly.
"No, I'm trying to kill the doogs." She whispered.
"Low voices and keep your horse quiet." She stepped away. Then crouched down again. This time she pulled out a spy glass and tried to look out into the spot where she saw that fast movement.
