Saru had finished up his warm-ups, and, seeing as Matis hadn't shown up yet, walked back to find out what the hold up was. When he entered the church, he noticed Alexia and Katara up and talking to Matis. Deciding that he'd let them talk for a bit, he casually leaned against the wall by the door and listened in. 'Hmm, actually...while trainin' with Matis will help me improve my sword skills, if Alexia were ta join, I could get some more variety and be better prepared,' he thought.

Matis noticed Saru waiting by the door of the church and hastily made his way towards the mercenary. "Sorry for the wait. Let's get going" he said, leaving the building and waiting for Saru to lead the way to the place he had chosen.
OoC: Let's just assume the ship docks this very day and get on with it. Katara will be dragged along until she's back.

OoC: That's fine with me.
BiC: Seeing Matis make his way over, Saru began leading him to the spot he had picked out for training. Once there, he turned and asked, "So, is there anythin' specific you want me to work on, or do we just get ta fight?" The mercenary hoped that Matis had planned out a routine for them, because he had forgotten about that. Besides, he had never been good with overly complicated things.

"Hmm...not really" Matis said, taking a few steps towards the cliff. "However..." he said, turning around and spinning one of his lances while dropping the other nearby, "Your performance during this spar will give me a rough idea on what you should improve" he added, smirking.
"Remember that you are fighting against an opponent with several advantages on you. Think carefully on how you'd take me on" he said, as he started moving in circles around Saru.
Matis was using a lance, which meant he would get more opportunities to land a hit against Saru. He was also faster and more skilled than the mercenary. Let's see how this turns out.

"Well, I guess that's why they say be careful what you wish for," Saru grumbled as he unsheathed his sword. Since Matis was using a lance, he now had an advantage in reach as well. 'What to do, what to do...' the mercenary thought as he eyed his opponent warily. 'Even though that lance increases his reach, if I can get inside his range and close to him, I should be okay.'
With a course of action decided, Saru needed to test how fast Matis was with his lance. He advanced warily before breaking to the left, trying to get around to his opponent's flank while slightly closing in, entering the lance's range, watching for Matis' response.

Matis waited eagerly for Saru's first strike. An attack from the right. "That's not going to work!" he said, as he stopped Saru's blade with the lower end of the lance. He then pushed against the mercenary, throwing him backwards and off balance.
Matis had to be careful. Neither of the two had to fall down the cliffs. It would mean certain death for either of them. "Don't be scared, I won't strike back. Just be careful, because even if I don't, your enemies will".
Not a bad start

"Well, that's reassuring," Saru answered. 'But that won't help me much regardless,' he thought. 'He's still much faster than me even with the lance. I've got to catch him off guard somehow. Hmm...maybe that'll work.'
The mercenary charged in once again, performing the same attack, this time to the right. Knowing Matis should block it easily, he waited for the right moment...There! As the lance parried his attack, Saru's right hand left the hilt of the sword and grabbed the lance shaft, holding it in place, while his left directed his sword in sweep toward Matis' hands, trying to get him to release his weapon.

That's it!
Matis released the grip on the lance and jumped backwards dodging the attack, getting his second lance once he landed.
"Good job! That's how you have to think in battle" he said. "Now, time to defend. See if you can block my attacks". Matis wasn't planning on attacking Saru with tip of the lance, just with the shaft. However, the point was not damaging the other.
He rushed forward and did a series of strikes, one after the other, testing Saru's reflexes.

Saru started off blocking the lance strikes, but seeing as how Matis began to speed up and put more force in his attacks, the mercenary began dodging. Unfortunately, his inexperience at fighting a lance wielder shone through, as several of Matis' attacks connected. Ducking under a strike aimed for his head, Saru backpedaled, saying, "Geez, take my head off my shoulders why don't ya? I understand this is to test me but do ya wanna kill and/or maim me?" With a fake look of indignation he said, "You wound me sir!" as he grasped his heart before breaking out in a large grin.

Matis chuckled. "Come on, I'm not even trying!"
"Pirates were easy to deal with, but most if not all of them are slower than you and carry axes to boot. What would you do if you were fighting a knight or general?" he said, spinning his lance yet again, this time lodging it into the ground.
"Take a short break. Overworking never gives any benefits"

"Right, right," he said, waving off Matis' comment. He walked over to where he had tossed his pack and grabbed a canteen, taking a couple swallows of water. While taking his short break, he contemplated on how to get around the problems posed by a lance user. 'Getting inside their ideal range seems to work,' he thought. 'Also, since they have a longer weapon, it should take them longer to recover from a mistake. If I can block the attack, I can possibly restrict their movement by grabbing the lance. ...Ugh, enough thinking about it.'
Standing up and stretching lightly, he walked back over to Matis. "Well, let's get back to you beating me around then. Maybe I can get lucky this time."

OoC: Gah, you moved! I hadn't been paying enough attention...
Alexia watched the two Saceans practice, leaning on her lance. For now, she opted against putting on the armor. Ever since her promotion, the gear had gotten heavy and unwieldy. Certainly not the sort of thing she wanted to be wearing everywhere.
Saru wasn't that bad, particularly seeing as Matis definitely had experience on him. At least the mercenary seemed to learn quick enough, which was important in a fighter.
"Maybe I should toss my axe at you some time, see how you handle that," she called, a teasing smile on her face. The idea amused her.

"Crazy woman. Wanting ta toss axes at me while I dodge his attacks. You people wanna kill me?" Saru asked. "Fine then. Bring it on! I'll take ya both!" Immediately after his outburst, Saru thought, 'Damn it! Why can't I just keep my big yap shut? They're crazy enough to do it too. Too late for regrets now!'

"You seriously wouldn't want that" Matis said calmly. "But, if you insist..."
"Alexia?" he asked, turning towards the paladin. "Mind to join?" he asked, not sure which of the two possible answers was best. Two against one would surely make Saru concentrate and try harder. But, at the same time, Matis didn't want to stress him out.

Catching wind of a heated battle Raen decided he would have a closer view of this one, it definately promised to be good.
Raen tossed his pack on a bush near the church wall. Then, walking towards the edge of the roof he leaped off. Landing on his legs he carried the momentem into a roll, putting his right arm over his head and effecting a lopsided spin that protected his back.
Raen looked over at Saru and called out: "You'd better hope I'm the slow one out of us if you want to give them a decent fight, Saru" he grinned wickedly.
Raen nodded at Dirk as he played the flute and selected a nearby tree.
