She had to resist the urge to laugh aloud. Hiding in plain sight, indeed! Nayru was intimately familiar with that adage. Most manaketes were. Refuge in audacity might almost be more accurate for her, but either worked. Something about his conclusion bothered her though; not that it was inaccurate, but that there was more to it. "The wings, though - as I've been given to understand, most humans do not commonly wear wings as natural accoutrements." It was an attempt at humor, anyways. "Does this possession naturally tend to end up with them, or were they simply a mutation specifically for this group, or a certain subset of infectected humanoids? Are there other mutations to find, I wonder? Strength fit to overwhelm our own, speed greater than the greatest swordmaster, magic to shame the greatest sage?"
It - bothered her somewhat that the gargoyles could be winged humanoids. It almost felt too much like manaketes in general for her. "And was it mere coincidence that these infected humans ended up winged humanoids with superhuman characteristics, or a design? The parallels between those creatures and manaketes may be entirely in my own mind, but I do not much like to consider the alternative - perhaps we might end up fighting twisted, unnatural brethren in our humanoid shape... or worse."
The idea of pseudodragons was worse, though she didn't see how it was possible. That didn't make it any more pleasant a possibility to consider. Perhaps, if there was an individual at the head of these creatures or even a gestalt entity, they were seeking a new path, one that would let them stand up to and destroy the dragons themselves. "Then again, if they possessed every human alive... that would be enough of an army to do the trick as well." The air was solemn, both of them trying to reason through the mysteries of the situation, neither of them knowing anywhere close to enough to actually come to a final solution.
And then another thought occurred to her. "What if - the Scouring took much from dragons, from the world, did it not? Crippled magic, crippled us. All of that power had to go somewhere. Perhaps these 'dark souls' did not so much escape that effect as they were strengthened by it."
Oh, yes, that was just a gloriously reassuring thought. Nayru didn't like being wrong, but at that point she would be happy to be conclusively proven wrong. As fitting as the admittedly-vindictive thought of humanity consumed by its own sins was, it seemed a little too far-fetched for even her. Aerious was right, though. Regardless of what these things were or how they existed, regardless of which or even if any of their theories were correct, the fact remained that they could not allow this incipient cataclysm to come to pass.
