Shugo looked around for a moment and noticed that another man had joined up with them. He was a fight which now made things a bit confusing, but he stood out enough amongst the others to not get stabbed.
Shugo heard Luna growl. The sound snapped him back to reality as he noticed a brigand coming up from his side. "What in the world is a runt like you doing here", spoke a voice from behind Shugo. The young rider turned to see a brigand towering over him with an axe in hand. It was unwise for Shugo to let his mind wonder in battle. He guessed the man was more weary of the White wyvern standing next to the boy.
Shugo did not say a word. Instead he simply lowered his visor and took a deep breath. The Wyvern rider charged forward with his lance held out in front of him just like he uses too when he was a knight. The bandit however was far more experience fighting against lances than Shugo was against axes. He hooked the lance and redirected Shugo charge toward the ground.
"Crap", spoke Shugo as his lance tip dug its way into the earth. Valin had warned him about attacking that way before, but for some reason it did not come to Shugo mind. He was now open for an attack, but Luna his loyal wyvern rushed in with fangs and claws at the ready. The brigand was forced to abandon his counter attack and defend himself from the wyvern. He took a swing at the beast causing it to jump backwars. The axe slid off the scales, but not before leaving a slash across Luna's face.
"Luna", shouted Shugo as he pulled his Dragon Lance out the dirt and move to attack the brigand again. He missed his shield he use to have back when he was a knight. It would have proved useful in this situation, but there was no time too think on what ifs and could of been. Shugo needed to focus on the now.

"Gwahaha!" Eren yelled, drawing his axe. However, Mika turned AWAY from the group, dropping like a stone and forcing Eren to hold on tightly. Suddenly, Eren saw that another bandit had attacked Luna; Mika dove and slammed her tail into the brigand, and, after knocking him down, grabbed him in her fangs and viciously crunched down, crushing and mangling the body beyond repair, shaking her head and throwing bits of bandit radially outward.
Eren leapt off Mika, looking around and noting with great relief that no more bandits were left in sight. The waning moon left grim, black shadows over the stained snow, and illuminating the now-motionless wagon with their plunder in a sharp, cold light.
"Well, that was fun. Everyone okay?" Eren asked, checking Mika and then striding over to the fighter.
"You're from Bern, huh. That's a military grade axe, my good man. Where'd you get it? And how?"
Eren held his axe low, indicating his wish for peace, but subtly demanding answers.

Shugo watched as Eren's mount tore the bandit asunder. He revled in the man's demised, but hated that he was not the one too do it. Shugo reached into his pocket and pulled out some medicine and applied it too Luna's wound. After finishing his task he walked over to Eren. "Thank you for the aid", spoke Shugo to Eren's mount. "I feared that Luna might have taken a more serious injury if it was not for your help." After speaking to the wyvern he walked over to Eren. Eren seemed to be having a conversation with the fighter so Shugo waited before he spoke. He did not want to interrupt anything.

I'm from Ilia, actually. But i lived in Bern for awhile. He sat back lazily, resting his axe on his knee, the blade in the snowy ground of Ilia.
My mother was a FalcoKnight here, sent me off to find work when i was old enough. Thats about when i went to Bern, met my father. He'd explain as the group stood around him, he'd look at the two children with an approving gaze.
He was a Wyvern Knight in service to Bern before the rebellion started. After the crown was overthrown he and his fellow soldiers roamed as mercenaries. I found 'em, joined 'em, nearly died along with 'em... He'd shake his head, obviously the memory wasn't pleasant, but he was surprisingly open about everything.
My late father gave me this axe. So, my answers good enough for you? Eren knew Marric's father, he'd no doubt see the family connection, as Marric greatly resembled his father, possibly one of his old comrades, but he no doubt had met Oeniye at the very least.

"No. No, no way. You're..."
Shaking his head in disbelief, Eren almost dropped his axe. Walking up, he examined the man closely. Trying not to think about what it meant if Oeniye wasn't here. Trying... and failing.
"You're Oeniye's son.
But... Where is he. Where? You can't mean that. Oeniye was one of my greatest soldiers... We... No, no. You've got to be lying. This is Oeniye's sense of humor. I recognize it. Where is he, lad? He can't be gone.
Oeniye! Come on out! I'm a bit sad you didn't join us for the battle, comrade... But nice play, sending your son. Mark, was it? No, sounds wrong. Huh. Where is he, lad? It's been years since I've seen my old friend. C'mon, the game has run its course. You got me. I'll admit it. Now where is he? Where's Oeniye?"

Marric shook his head at the man. Opening his mouth to tell the man what happened, he'd find he couldn't. After a few moments of trying to think of the right words, he'd quietly utter one word. Mages.
And would say no more on the subject.
He'd stay silent for a long time, hoping the man would understand the message and would push the subject no further. He watched his father turn to ash under a barrage of thunder and fire magic. He didn't want to re-instill it into his thoughts. However, he was still interested in his father's exploits, and past. Oeniye never spoke of any of his past battles, but some of his men told the most outlandish of stories about his peerless skill with the lance, and how that he and his Wyvern were the fastest in bern, or anywhere for that matter. There was one story in particular he supposedly kept an entire platoon of Ilian Pegasus Knights at bay with a spear and some cunning maneuvers. But marric cared little for the truth or myth of those tales, he wanted to hear about what kind of man his father was when he was younger.
You knew my father, what was he like when he was younger?... Did he ever speak of my mother?

"Dammit. Not him too..."
Eren angrily sheathed his axe, grabbed his lance, and ran away toward Mika. Leaping on her back the two shot into the sky, spinning and flying, Eren sitting stone-still with his lance, not moving. Although none of the others could see, tears streamed down his face, and he shuddered and tried to pull himself together. After a few minutes, Mika gave one sorrowful cry, and the two returned to the earth. Eren dismounted and walked back over to the fighter, sheathing his weapons.
"Your father was a damned fine soldier. Look, kid, I don't even know where to begin. But I'm cold, and we need to finish business up. Let's take care of this lot, and get the wagon to town. Then, over some hot drinks, I'll tell you all you want to know about Oeniye. How about it? I'm Eren, Brigadier General Eren Barrata. And you?"

It seemed the two's conversation had come to an end. "Umm, Sir Eren", spoke Shugo as he walked up to the man. The young boy raised his hand out to shake his hand. "It was a pleasure to see you fight", spoke Shugo. From the glances he caught he picked up a few moves from the Dragon Knight.
Shugo then turned toward Marric. It is nice to meet you as well, but I don't really have your name", spoke Shugo.

My name's Marric, I'll take care of the wagon. I'll meet the three of you in town. He'd get up and jog over the hill toward the halted wagon, and took the reigns. He'd take it down the hill slowly, the snow making it dangerous to go too fast. However, he wished to hurry and meet them in the next town over. Forget his payment in the one he had came from, he just met a man that knew his father... fairly well it seemed, and he wished to know every detail.
An hour or so later, Marric rode into town in the wagon, freezing cold, and a bit sore. He'd see a wyvern's tail sticking out from a stable near a tavern, and knew that was the place to head to. He tied the reigns of the horse(s) to a post outside of the place and entered the tavern. He wouldn't bother checking to make sure the goods in the wagon were safe, in Ilia thieves were uncommon in towns as everyone knew not to take another man's things, especially if that man was a bit covered in blood and toted around a menacing axe.
He'd enter the tavern quietly, relative to the noise inside. Men and women of alll ages sat around conversing and drinking happily. Marric looked for the tell-tale sign of Eren and the two young boys through the crowds before finding them sharing a few glasses of a steaming beverage.
Sir Eren, the wagon's tied out front. Now, about what you said when we parted ways...

”Well, you made it! Come, come! Sit down, have a drink, my good sir.” Eren encouraged jovially. ”In fact, Marric, I was just about to toast. To success, and damn good fighting! Here’s to Shugo, Marric, Eren, and Starks!” Draining his cup, Eren swiveled to face the gaunt fighter. ”What part about your father do you want to know first, Marric? He was a fine soldier, that’s for sure. And although I was a finer soldier… He was by far the better man. I was lucky to have known him and fought alongside him. Although he did get a little bit overly romantic at times. He could have at least let me know when he was going to have that pegasus knight over… Although she was cute, I’ll give her that much. Mika and her mount never got along well. Heh, they used to fight tooth and nail if we let them get too close.” Eren leaned back wistfully, taking another draught out of his now-refilled cup. ”What a man he was.”

Ah... I see... I heard many a tale about his skill in the air, surely you've heard them as well... Are any true? He'd fidget at the man mentioning his mother as cute. What the man said brought a bit of warmth to his heart, even he seemed to think of his father in high regard, and this man was a general. He took the drink the tavern wench brought to him with thanks, and leaned it to hear more.

Shugo did not like the idea of leaving Marric by himself. As Marric drove the cart Luna and Shugo circled in the air above. By the time Marric arrived at the city Luna was hungry. Shugo landed his Wyvern and took a visit to the nearby market. He bought some meat for his Wyvern and let Luna eat it raw. She seemed to prefered raw meat over cooked, but Shugo could not stand to watch her eat it. The Wyvenr Knight walked into the tavern and found the too men talking.
"Hello Marric and Eren", spoke Shugo interjecting himself into the conversation. He did not know what it was about, but he wanted to join in. With him separated from Valin for a while he did not really have anyone else to talk too.

"Well... A lot were our boasts we used to make. Although we did enjoy a good race, and an ale. Ah, those were good days.
Oh, Shugo! Good to see you, sir! Nice fight. You and Luna were dynamic. You'd make great soldiers, you two. Marric and I were just discussing wyverns... There was this one time, see, where Oeniye and I were scouting out a target... A squadron of shamans, you see, led by the fabled Seraph Jiine... They surprised us. We were completely surrounded... Their magic blocked out the sun with dark, cold, menacing blackness."
Eren shuddered, and seemed to fade into the memory as he recanted the story.
"Oeniye and I were vastly outnumbered. There were over ten of the shamans, plus Jiine. We stood no chance... But together... We vowed to go down fighting. But... Then... Your mother. She appeared... And Oeniye, something inside him exploded. He had such a bond with her, he didn't want to see any harm come to her. And so we fought. Blood covered the field. The sky looked like there was a tornado surrounding us... The land was slick, a river of blood, and a mass of corpses. The shamans kept coming. We were growing weary... But Oeniye... He charged Jiine. Your mother and I flanked her, and Oeniye was closing when she threw a javelin... It impaled your mother in the leg, pinning her to her pegasus... And Oeniye leapt off his wyvern. He landed on Jiine's pegasus... he knocked her off, and the two plummeted. Her pegasus dove and they landed on the ground... But Jiine stood no chance, not against Oeniye's righteous fury. She... She begged, and the air echoed with her screams. Oeniye's wyvern completely destroyed her pegasus... And Jiine, she ended up in about five pieces.
We all were fine afterward... But the heroism and love your father showed... I'll never forget it. He was the best man I knew."

You were close then... He never spoke of you while i knew him. Marric stated bluntly. He wasn't the best at putting things in a lighter fashion. The story did chill him, however, it explained why his mother always walked with a faint limp, and why his father had leaped from his wyvern during the ambush... He had done it before, he wasn't trying to get himself killed... But how was he defeated? Marric reasoned that everyone's luck ran out at some point, but there? It made little sense to him.

"Hah," Eren barked. It was a short laugh, filled with sadness and what-ifs. "Why would he? He never was one for Ilia. I stayed in the military. He left. He tried to get me to come, but I was too set on continuing to serve... Damn, if only I'd left. No matter. Your mother was insistent that I leave, but my will is steel... Ah, if only."
Taking a long draught, Eren shook his head and took out his headband, shaking his hair and wiping his brow before replacing the headband and signaling for another drink.
"And... that was the last time I ever saw him."
