Her face darkened to a scarlet at Syana's laughter at her, but she wasn't hurt by it.... The lighthearted island girl was possessed of a springy character, and got over most harmless things quickly. Especially when it was funny. A free sense of humor let her laugh at her own fright, and Loreley knew from her own experience or the testimony of others how funny it was to her yelp at nothing. Most of the time, she was just a little frustrated by it, but this felt different to her. The dark of the night would hide her reddening cheeks, but she wasn't really the sort to hold anything back when it came to startlement.
Syana's mastery of herself and how to control her movements astounded her. Something very high to aim for, but she didn't think she'd get to that point. She hoped she would, but she had a hard time convincing herself of it being in her. Her face glowed a little more under the praise of the swordswoman, and she found herself tittering lightly as the other woman mentioned street toughs wetting themselves when she disappeared.
"I have so much to learn though." Loreley said as the red head finished up. "I thought I just needed a little bit of experience handling contracts. Knowing the language. I'd figured on staying with a group, and picking up some experience over time, but now...." She paused. She was still caught in the excitement from their little contest and it was wringing loose alot of her raw impressions and emotions. "Well, if I had to go head to head against someone while on payroll, Would I die?" At that question, her face and voice hardened up considerably. Risking her life for money had such a bad feel to it. She didn't want to die for money. And she didn't really want to kill for it either. Her face grew pensive.
But I do want to learn under Syana. Her face hardened up a little at that, and a spark of ambition awoke again in her eyes like a flash of lightning in a summer squall. She wasn't sure what she would do someday with her talents. It was true, but Syana's talents inspired a greedy lust to be able to do the same as the assassin could do.

Syana grinned again when she saw how red her face had gotten. Sure, the darkness hid most of it, but it was hard to miss that Lore's face was currently the same color as her hair. The poor girl. She really had gotten her good. She had always hoped to scare Saturos like that, but the guy was a stone. She'd get him one of these days.
The redhead gave a little shrug at the girl's words. "You do have a lot to learn. That's just a fact. Anyone new to any line of work has a lot of work. But that's why I'm here. I can show you how to handle contract, teach you any language you need to know, tell you watch groups to work with and which to avoid." She looked at the girl's face as she asked if she would die. Syana grimaced. Letting herself down from her branch, she landed lightly next to Loreley and sat next to her.
Putting her arm around the girl's shoulder, Syana looked straight into her eyes. "You may die. I won't sugar coat it for you. That's always a possibility in this line of work. And not just because you're new. Any mercenary at every level of proficiency risks dying every time they take a job. That includes me. I never know whether the next job I take will be my last. But you can't let that scare you. If you get scared, you hesitate, and that can get you killed. You have to go in with confidence that you'll come out over. You can't be overconfident, cause that can get you killed too. Just know your abilities and your limits."
The merc gave the girl a little squeeze. "But don't worry about all that yet. I'm here to teach you, and I aim to keep you alive. Sound good?"

Loreley knew that the mercenary woman was right when she pointed out the little fact about beginners. Beginners always had alot to learn, but she didn't want to be a beginner. She wanted to just think for a little bit, say a prayer to the stars, snap her fingers, and boom. Instant expert bow for hire. Unfortunately, that wasn't how things worked in the world.... And, it sounded particularly whiny to voice that out loud. She'd tried before.
When Syana came over and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, Loreley's initial impulse was to pull away. She stopped herself though, and instead just let herself drop the stress that she hadn't known she was harboring. Her shoulders slumped with a sigh as Syana spoke of the risk of death and defeat that came with the profession. Hearing someone else talking about it and how they handled it helped relax her though. Fear was a funny thing. It could seem like a massive dark stormcloud on the horizon, and yet, put a name to it, and it suddenly seemed manageable. That was what the pair was doing.... Who was this Syana? An amazing acrobat, experienced merc, mistress of the shadows,... and here she was being exactly the sort of comfort that the islander needed to pull through.
"I can do that." The golden eyed traveler knew that she could, but it would take time, and effort to learn. Time that Syana would be working to give her. Wow... The merc woman seemed to have taken quite a shine to her. Lorely smiled and chuckled at that.
"Thanks, Syana. I won't let you... ahhh.... down." Loreley covered her mouth with a loose fist as she spoke, letting a yawn slip out. She felt her face redden a bit more and she shook her head and rolled her eyes in embarrassment. This was turning out to be a fine night for showing her proficiency.... "Oh... I'm sorry. That wasn't at you!" She assured Syana. How long had she been up today? What time was it now, anyway? It had been dark for some time now. She glanced at the sky and raised an eyebrow. Somewhere during the action it had turned from late to extra late at night.

Syana couldn't help but smirk as the girl yawned and apologized. She wasn't surprised Loreley was tired. It was fairly late into the night, plus the red-haired girl had just put her through a test. Shaking her head, she patted the girl on the shoulder. "It's alright, it's late. Why don't we head back into town and sleep for the night. Then, in the morning..." Syana jumped from the branch, did a flip in the air, and landed neatly. She looked back up at Lore. "We start your training for real."
The mercenary grinned up at the girl. She couldn't help but show off from time to time. Saturos had always just rolled his eyes at her. It took a lot to impress Mister Perfect. Less experiences mercs, or in Lore's case mercs only just starting out, were much more easily impressed. And she had to admit, it felt nice to know that there was at least someone who held her in high regard.
It was strange. Syana was no slouch. She was a very good mercenary and assassin with a reputation to back her work. And yet, since she always seemed to work with other mercenaries on her level or better, she never felt like she was particularly good. That's part of the reason why she was so keen to help Loreley. The girl was so inexperienced, it really drove home just how far Syana had come from when she started out. And it showed her that even though Lore was inexperienced, that some day she could become as good as, or even better than, herself.

There was a small gasp and then a happy if conspiratorial smile that followed as Syana pulled a flip right off of the branch. She wanted to be able to do that! The woman made it look easy, but Lore had tried flips before! Sure, flipping into the water was easy, but landing on your feet took some work and some effort, and she'd certainly never looked that graceful when she'd tried such things. She settled for dropping down off the branch and swinging down neatly, before coming to rest in front of Syana. It was better than looking like a salmon flopping on the rocks.
"I want you to show me how to do that...."
The prospect of the "real training" the next day got her excited all over again. She knew that that was a little silly. She just needed to slow down and walk the path at its own pace. She couldn't help all of it though. She'd lucked out and gotten Syana the Swift as her trainer, after all! She gathered up her belongings, and started to join up with the other woman, red and golden hair shining together under the moonlight. As they walked though, she remembered something.... Ugh... how long had they walked to get all the way out here? And now they had to walk back. Well..., she imagined she'd be doing alot of walking from now on. No more taking things easy. She had to be tough. She had to be smart too, as her father had taught her, but not at the expense of toughening up a little. This was going to be a great adventure!
