He may be a good writer, but I doubt he'd sell any books like that. Nobody could really realate to a guy like that. *shrugs*

my main character spent the entirety of his first fight screaming and cowering...
you would too if a demon charged into your kitchen and started trying to eat you.

I know. But that doesn't mean he sucks as a writer. That just means he sucks at character design which can make the story bad. Also broken is a term used in games/card games where something is really good. Like in the naruto ccg, the 3rd hokoga can pretty much win the game for you by himself. There fore he is broken, too good.

I believe broken started being used in games with the appearance of Mewtwo in Pokemon Red/Blue. He was simply so powerful, that even full level 100 teams were unable to take him down.
Anyway...yes, it DOES lead to a bad overall story, but it's his writing skills which I am talking about. If he would only think of different things, then, he could write some amazing books.

I think the term "broken" was in use before Mewtwo, but that is a very good example; and probably how it really took off.
and a main character that can't be sympathized with will blow up an entire story. That was one of my editor's major complaints when I submitted my novel. It took a lot of changing. it's important.

Once again, I have to say, that I'm not referring to the STORY development part, but how he describes things happening, how he makes you FEEL that it IS happening. Something like that is what Tolkien can do(rather, DID), and, to an extent, what Rowling can do.
It's the way he tells things, not WHAT he tells. Of course, he should get whacked in the head ten times over before actually writing a story, but he does have the skills to write.

Tolkien had a lot of broken characters. Aragorn could apparantly not be touched for instance. Just because Matt was stronger then you guys doesn't mean Justin is bad at character design. You yourself said that Matt was the funnniest character to support with, Kenshin.

Ok, Matt could be hurt. This character I'm talking bout has one weakness, it's to stab him in the heart. He has like 5 souls in him at once so it's near imposible to get close enough to him without him knowing. He feels no pain, he doesn't feel anything. IIRC he's blind too so a blind man going on a crazy bloody rampage and can't be killed.

Tolkien had a lot of broken characters? Like Gandalf, who dies? Or Saruman, who ends up a broken shell? Maybe you meant the Witch King... no, he gets killed by a woman. Or any other Nazgul, wait, there's a giant wave of water. Boromir... no.... he dies too...
Also, we're talking about Main characters. Frodo was a far cry from being broken. And Aragorn got wounded several times. True, he was a mighty warrior, but he was wounded. And he had to deal with Sauron, and loads of female admirers.

XD
Simply couldn't resist but laugh at that last sentence("loads of female admirers"). And yes, Syrus(our friend's creation) is TOO broken. Kenshin pointed it out just right.
Think Superman, unable to fly, but with less of a weakness(the guy has "teh senses", and nothing can get close to him without him noticing, so a stab to the heart is pretty much impossible).

For all we know Syrus can fly, Justin might of not said it yet...

No he didn't. he stayed on his feet against the five of Nazgul, he was unscathed in Moria, he didn't even get to fight on Emyn Muil (entirely his own fault), I haven't read him being hurt in Helm's Deep or against the gigantic Dead Host. it was spefically stated that he wasn't hurt at the battle for Minas Tirith. And after that he stayed up half the night tending to the wounded since no one else could. Broken? I think so. And the tons of female admirers only added to this.
