It had been a day or two since they had began marching from the fort. Valorian found he was able to keep up with the marching quite well, maybe he was in better shape then he imagined. As they marched through the endless fields of green he looked around, curious as to where his companion vanished to.
A green cloak in a green field was the perfect disguise.
"Jya? Are you around here?" He asked aloud, wondering if she could hear it. As he looked for her his thoughts began to wonder...this girl, she reminded him of someone...
But the past wasn't something he liked to dwell on.

When Jya heard Valorian's call, she popped up her head from under the veil of the green grass. It was disappointing, but she only managed to catch a few bugs. Stuffing one into her mouth, she bit down on the crunchy exterior, exposing the slimy guts. They actually packed quite a bit of protein and could keep her going for days if needed.
"Hey, over here!" she yelped, before rushing towards the priest. Her footsteps were as light as ever, seeing as she had to keep quiet with sneaking around. Strangely over the five years, the necessary skills needed for a thief became a habit and part of life.

Valorian smiled and walked to her, not noticing what she had been doing, but maybe that was for the best.
"Ah, there you are. I knew you had to be around here somewhere. So, how have you been holding up?"
He was referring, of course, to her sickness. He wasn't sure how polite it was to bring it up, but he couldn't seem to put it from his mind. An unknown illness...was there anything he could do for it?

"Oh, perfectly fine!" Jya replied, putting her bugs in a pouch on the side.
"I feel bad for the soldiers, their food is sorta bland," Jya continued, looking around the place with little ease of mind. Marching wasn't exactly her thing, she preferred to roam around on her own. This whole army thing was extremely confusing. Her main problem was her own lack of knowledge, she never bothered to chat with people, except when necessary.
"Hey Valorian, what exactly is going on, with this prophet thing?"

Valorian watched her with a smile, such energy. How could such a sickly girl be so happy and energetic all the time? The answer was beyond him. And though he should have expected it, her question caught him off guard...
"That's...a tough question to answer...I guess the real question is do you really want to know the answer to that?"
He stopped and looked at her seriously. "I've trusted you with a lot, so if you really want to know, I will tell you...but I cannot promise that what you will hear will be pleasant, or even believable."
He paused for a moment, looking over her. Was it really wise to share such secrets with her? Well...maybe.

"Believable? Well its hard to not believe crazy things when one moment a city was safe and sound, than blew up in flames," Jya responded, trying her best to sound upbeat as before. She sat down on the grass, her legs crisscrossed, waiting for an answer.
"Even if I hear something I don't like, it won't change a thing with the current situation," she continued looking her friend straight in the eye.
"Besides, this is coming from a girl who grew like over a foot in five years."

He cracked a smile at her height remark, and had to agree that some odd things were happening. Maybe the impossible wasn't so anymore.
"Well, it started a long time ago...very near to where we are in fact. The castle town of Ostia was attacked by the Bern army. Of course, as history states, the Bern army was pushed back when their commander was defeated in a one on one duel. However, Ostia was later destroyed by a single man, or rather I should say a single ghost."
He paused, and then continued. "If you are familiar with legends, the name might ring a bell to you. His name was Roland, The Little Warrior."
He looked over Jya, his eyes focused. "The others of the seven returned as well, each to their own homes. Of course most people didn't believe it, they simply could not imagine that the dead had returned to life to attack their own nations. But there was one nation spared the assault of their legend. The Holy Nation of Erturia. When St. Elimine rose again, she snared control from the devout populace, and...killed all in her way..."
After that bit he grew silent for a moment. There was clearly more to the story, but he had fallen into silence.

"You know Valorian, I...really have no idea what you just said, but thats because I was never taught anything where I was raised," Jya responded, patting her knees.
"But I think ignorance had been a bliss," she continued, Now moving a bit closer to the boy.
"Though I never had a proper education in anything thievery, I was taught one other thing by my parents," she continued, and before long, giving Val a hug.
"I'll stick with you, till this whole thing blows over, just don't let that sadness hold you down!"
"There is more important things to do, anyways."

Of all the things Val was expecting...shock, anger, confusion, anything like that, the embrace from the young woman was not on that list. As she drew closer his breath caught it his throat, until she made contact.
He remained almost motionless, his brain trying to form the reaction to this level of human contact, something he was very much not used to. It broke after a moment, and he sat there stunned, his brain going over the words she had spoken while he was out to lunch.
She would stay with him, until the end. That was good right? Or was it...there might be a time when...If things continued as they had been...
"U-uh...yeah. There are of course more important things to do...I just...wanted to have a peaceful life. Settle down in some village somewhere, maybe take on a pupil or two if nothing else, and help people get by their lives. But the world just won't let me rest...one crisis to another..."
He hadn't even considered it until now. "I think...I'm just tired...but there is still so much work to be done...still though..."
He looked to her with a genuine smile. "It's not so bad, I could be alone."

When Valorian began his own speech, she somewhat tuned out at the slight of rustle close-by. It was the rat she was hunting! Getting down, she made her way and finally caught the piece of meat, before quickly sliding her blade through the neck.
"Hey Valorian, look I caught a rat! Its meet is rough, but better than some bugs in the plain!" she sounded awfully cheerful about the whole thing.

Valorian looked curiously at the girl as she bound away to chase a rat...what on earth? He could understand eating that in necessity, but making that the first choice?
"Uh Jya?" He said confused. "You know...those probably aren't the best things for you...I mean...rats carry all kind of diseases. It's probably not too good for you. If you don't like the soldiers food, maybe I can cook something for you. I mean, I've gotten pretty good at some simple meals."
He looked at her with a curious grin. "It has to be healthier then eating rats and bugs, which certainly isn't helping you any." This girl really did learn how to fend for herself, it was almost like taking care of a child.

"Ahh, but rats haven't killed me yet, but I heard some bugs were better in protein than regular meat! Want to try a grasshopper?" Jya asked, storing the rat in the pouch area that had salt in it. She was going to store it for awhile, just in case.
"But you know, I wonder, this Etruria, I think that was where I was born...I can't even remember my parent's face..." she remarked, trying to see an image of those that had taken care of her for thirteen years. They loved her, she did too, but they were so...plain...

Valorian would have gone into a discussion of her malnourishment, but her new topic of conversation was more interesting.
"You think you were from Erturia? What do you remember about it, life with your parents I mean. If you don't mind me asking, that is."
He was very interested in what talking might reveal. She had been a very quiet girl when it came to her past, but now she might open up?

"Bits and pieces, bits and pieces, thats the best way to describe it... As I recall, we had a priest and my parents would literally drag me sometimes to church," she paused, not wanting to get any farther into her life.
"You know, I think the reason I know how to do what I do was thanks to a traveler. Oh, he was real nice, showing me his shiny key things, telling me about the world and its treasures," Jya paused for a minute, recalling perhaps the man's name...
"His name was...it was...Raille, umm last name...was ugh, it was, I can't remember. Anyways, yeah, okay, were cool," she said, lightly tapping Valorian's arm with a fist.

"A religious girl....I see..." But what bothered him was the bits and pieces part. What could have happened to her that she didn't remember her own childhood? It's not like it was that long ago. Still the idea of Jya being dragged, kicking and screaming into a church, made his lip curve in a grin. And she talked about her mentor, a man who taught her the secrets of the world. Everybody had someone like that.
"Yes, I had a mentor like that as well...he taught me the basics of magic. I'm the only one in my family that had any aptitude with it. But that seems like forever ago." He closed his eyes and remembered his family. "Somehow, I think my teacher was more a parent to me then my parents were. It's just that connection, but I think you know what I mean."
