Night blinked. "Grand? Well, uhh...That's the first time I've heard someone say it that way. Interesting? Yeah. Exciting? Sure. Grand? Ehh...Not so much. Still, it's decent work. Good pay." The mercenary looked around the church, not really sure what to do next. "So...how will we know when these bandits show up?"

“Certainly, I do not really get out much, but I do read. The stories of the eight heroes, I know Saint Elimine’s the best obviously, but can you imagine setting out to save the world! It would be wonderful. Battling evil, good triumphing over all and you get to live it.” Alice smiled, obviously a little bit in her own world, and then Night’s words interrupted her thoughts.
“Oh, well usually the raid before night fall, come in while there is still light then head into the woods so we cannot follow them back to camp. A few of the men tried, but they ended up in the chapel for their efforts.” Alice answered honestly, the bandits shockingly were not morons as the tales in her books led her to believe.
“Typically when they start the attack someone bursts in here that way we can toll the tower bell. Well it isn’t really a tower bell, more like a loft bell.” Alice waved towards the ceiling where there was indeed a very scary looking set of ladders and platforms leading upwards to a small wooden door in the ceiling. “Ring the bell and everyone runs inside or outside and well chaos.” Alice shrugged and looked towards the door to the basement. “Father Reeves normally stands outside the church and I put the log across to barricade the door from the inside, simple really except for the death and violence.”

"So someone runs in and starts ringing the bell around dusk..." Just then, a man burst through the door. "They're here!" he screamed, running towards the stairs leading towards the bellfries. "...So...Like that."
Beat.
"I gotta go!" Night ran towards the door, shoving it open and almost tumbling into the street. He saw Balbos making his way towards him. "Chief!"
"I know!" Balbos shouted back, his axe already in hand. "Come on! We've got to get back to the others! The Father will get everyone inside!" Nodding, Night followed after him towards the gate.

Alice tried not to shake. They were here. It was usually later in the day when they came. What was different this time? She moved quickly closing large wooden shutters in front of stained glass windows jamming them shut from the inside. She kept an eye on the man climbing the belfry, but did not envy him.
As the people of the town came flooding in, Alice kept working. The panic seemed to be somewhere else every time this happen like it was somewhere on the horizon waiting to strike. Father Reeves came hustling in through the main doors. “Alice!” The old man called, and Alice dropped what she was doing pushing through the waves of people to get to him.
“What do you need me to do father?” Alice asked taking the old man’s hand within her own.
“Eric, finish closing up those windows. Vivian get those kids seated. Everyone get into the pews and keep low.” Father Reeves called out and the villagers snapped to it. Father Reeves removed his hand from hers and cupped her face. “Oh my dear, could you get me my book? Also once everyone is seated count them for me I thought I was the last in, but…”
“I understand father, I will go get your tome and take a tally of the refugees.” Alice bowed dislodging the hand from her face. “Once I am done, I will begin leading everyone in prayer. I think it will be best to ask for Saint Elimine’s help for the young men fighting outside.”
“Which young men?” Father Reeves prompted when Alice stood back up.
“All of them.”

"Hyyyaaaa!" Night roared, bringing his blade down on another bandit. "Damn it! There's just no end to these guys!" he cursed, deflected an axe blow from another one. "Get back!" he shouted, swinging his blade. The bandit jumped back, and before Night could advance on him, he felt something tear into his side. With a cry, he collapsed at the feet of the axe wielding bandit who had snuck up behind him.
"Night!" Leeroy shouted, looking at his companion in shock. Lurching forward, he planted his axe in the assailants skull. "Balbos! Night's hurt!" he shouted.
It only took a matter of moments for Balbos to appear at his side. "Damn it...And we're out of vulneraries!" The older mercenary grimaced. "Leeroy, get him to the Father!"
"No!" Leeroy replied. "You go!" Before Balbos could reprimand him, he continued. "Night's too heavy for me to carry! He'd be dead by the time I got him to the church doors! Arumen can't get to us, so it has to be you!" Looking up, Balbos knew it was true. There was no way the Sacaen horseman could reach them, and Leeroy simply wasn't strong enough. Night didn't have that sort of time. "I'll cover you!" Leeroy assured him. Nodding, Balbos scooped Night up, and ran through the gates, straight towards the church. Leeroy stood infront of the gate, axe held hey. "Allright, chums! Lets do this!" he shouted.
"Who the hell are you supposed to be?" One of the bandits jeered.
Leeroy smirked. "Glad you asked. Just remember my name when I send you to hell! Leeroy Jenkins! You got that!?" Leeroy charged the bandit horde. "LEEEEROOOOOOY JEEEEEENKIIIIIIIINS!" He swung, striking one bandit in the head. He backstepped another, kicked his knee in, and did him likewise. Just before he could take a third down, though, an arrow struck his chest. Leeroy gasped and staggered, but moved forward to strike down another bandit. Another arrow struck him. It brought him down to a knee. Still, he swung at the bandits within reach. Then an axe found it's way to the side of his head. Arumen had fought his way to Leeroy, but it was too late. Leeroy Jenkins breathed no more.
-----
"Allright, chums! Lets do this!" .... "LEEEROOOOOOY JEEEENKIIIIIIINS!"
Night could barely pick out the beginning and end of Leeroys last words, nothing else. Pain shot through him like liquid fire, and Night screamed.
"Hang on, kid, we're almost there!" Balbos urged.
"Please! Please, have some mercy and kill me! Put me out of this!" he begged.
"Shut up, kid! Don't talk like that! What about your memory!? You'll never find it if your dead!" Balbos scolded. Reaching the churck, he kicked at the door. "Reeves! Reeves, open the door now! Night's hurt! He's dying! Open the damned door, Reeves!"

Alice handed Father Reeves his light tome and the old man placed his hand on the cover and took a deep breath. Eric pulled up a stool and Father Reeves sat down in front of the door, one of the last lines of defense for the people.
Alice moved back towards the front of the church and picked up one of the holy books. She opened it to a random page saw the beginning of a story and took a deep breath.
“Brothers and Sisters let us pray…” Alice held onto the book and bowed her head in reverence speaking softly hoping to reach out to Saint Elimine in heaven and get her to grant aid to the young men. As Alice spoke she felt the tension in the room and she hated it. She ignored it though and kept speaking. The sounds of battle raged outside the cries of dying men, their last words, their lasts breaths all happening outside those doors.
“Reeves! Reeves!”
Alice looked up towards the doors, she dropped the book. Eric beat her to the door first and lifted the bar. Alice moved past him pulling the door open enough to let them inside. Once they were in, Alice pushed the door closed and Eric dropped the log down. Father Reeves breathed a sigh of relief.
“Father!” Alice called out rushing to his side taking the Light Tome from him.
“Thank you Alice, quit standing there stupid set the boy down!” Father Reeves tapped his staff against the ground and Alice stared as it glowed blue.

Balbos set Night down and stepped back. The young mercenary groaned and wailed as blood wetted the floor around him. As the blue light washed over him, however, the wailing began to cease. Hewn flesh sewed itself together, not even leaving a scar. That was not the whole cause of Night's sudden silence, however. The young man had passed out a few seconds before Reeve's magic took hold.

After the young mercenary Night fainted, Balbos slammed back outside. Father Reeves trailed right out behind him grabbing the tome from Alice’s hands. The sounds of chaos were cut off by Eric slamming the door shut.
“Help me move him to a pew.” Alice spoke softly and hands reached out to help her. “Grab the bowl of water from the altar and try to find any strips we can use as bandages.” It was directed to the room and she was a little shocked to find her orders obeyed. “Saint Elimine help us.” Alice muttered under her breath.
She tried to keep everyone busy or moving that way they wouldn’t worry. When night finally fell and the cries of men died down Father Reeves and Balbos reentered the church with the remaining mercenaries. Alice and the villagers helped move the injured men so they could lie down. Alice tried not to look, but she could not resist.
“Father?” Alice asked walking over to the aging man in the corner.
“Oh Alice my dear, dear Alice.” Father Reeves began reaching out to her and Alice could not stop herself from freezing in fright. Father Reeves sighed and pulled his hand away. He shifted in his seat before he spoke next. “Take my heal staff you know how to use it. I am too tired to heal them. Remember…”
“Those who are in the most need first father I know.” Alice tried to smile as he passed her the staff and she would deny later how she fled from his side.

"Nnn...." Night groaned, stirring from his pain-induced sleep. At first, he didn't even realise he was awake. Finally, he managed to open his eyes, only to see darkness. He blinked, slowly whiping the darkness away, and then there was blurry vision. As that began to clear, he saw a woman with purple hair in a white robe tending to someone next to him. Of course, that last part didn't register to the just-recently capacitated mercenary. "An angel..." he murmured, or at least he thought, his control over his vocals not yet completely back. It was quiet, but loud enough to be heard. "Am I...Am I in heaven?"

The blue light faded from the heal staff as the mercenary Night began making noise. Alice turned letting the spell go. She pushed her hair behind her ear. Her eyes quickly scanned the church before stepping towards Night.
“Night, are you alright?” Alice asked looking at the Mercenary. The town people had cleared out going outside to clear out the dead and straighten out what was left of the village. “Night, this isn’t heaven. You’re here in the church, you helped save the village. You were hurt. Father Reeves healed you. Night?”

"Nnnn...Church...Saved the village..."
"Allright, chums! Lets do this! ....LEEEROOOOOOY JEEEENKIIIIIIINS!"
"Leeroy!" Night gasped, flying into a sitting position. The world spinned around him, and he collapsed back down.
"Calm down, kid, before you go and bust your head open!" Balbos scolded. The old man was sporting an arm wound, and while waiting for his turn had opted to bandage it and preserve blood.
"Oh, Chief..." Night glanced around, and caught a glimpse of a Sacaen. "Arumen..." Right next to him were the archer brothers. But someone was missing still. "Leeroy. Where's Leeroy?" he asked, looking back to Balbos. The older mercenary cleared his throat, and averted his gaze. Night knew exactly what that meant. "....Leeroy...." Night clenched his eyes shut, and let out a barely controlled breath.

Alice tried to look away. Another human being was hurting and she could not help him. There was no way to bring his friend back.
“I’m so sorry.” Alice spoke with actual sympathy. She dropped her shoulders and hugged the mercenary. (Miraculously not hitting the pew with her staff) “He was your friend. There is no reason for his death, but his bravery saved many lives. Each and every one of you did not have to come here and help us, but you did. Thank you.”
