Clair turned her head at the sound of grasses brushing together. Aerious was walking towards the camp, Salvation Point billowing smoke behind him. It was quite the sight, and a bit of a relief. Hopefully, anything left there would be nothing but cinders and ash now. Hopefully, nothing horrific could come from that.
She pushed herself up from her seated position, leaning back against her tack, and straightened her clothing and hair as needed. She'd been up since the day had started to paint its colors across the skies canvas, but hadn't bothered actually starting her day. For now, she simply wanted to calmly watch as time progressed, something she rarely managed to do when traveling in the army.
"Good morning Aerious." It was all she really had to say to him. She'd spoken very little to the brown haired man since they'd joined company, and though she wished to know more about the hidden dragon, there was no real bridge to cross with. She was curious about the threesome's plans though.

Aerious acknowledged Clair as she greeted him. [red]"A good morning to you as well Clair. I trust you are recovered from yesterday?"[/red] He didn't mean her specifically, but he knew that the lot of them were run pretty ragged yesterday. He seemed pleasant to Clair, and in truth he had no grudge against her. The females seemed much easier to get along with. Less posturing and arrogance, more goal based.
[red]"So, forgive me for prying, but where are you and Richter headed? It is quite rare to see two of Ilia's finest out on their own."[/red] He wasn't certain Richter was Ilian, but Clair seemed to regard him as a companion, and she certainly was from Ilia. It seemed a logical assumption that they were from the same mercenary group. Though their talent was well above what a standard mercenary would have access to.

"Recovered enough." She flexed her right hand lightly, feeling the burns at the tips of her fingers. They still hurt, and would probably be sensitive for a few days. Maybe even a couple of weeks. That lance was both a blessing and a danger. She was glad to have found it, but also feared its powers appropriately. Yesterday had been the perfect object lesson about it.
"Eastward, to Bulgar, and then Bern." Clair wondered how much Richter had told the brown haired man about them. That they were Ilian wasn't hard to guess, but what other information was afloat? Nayru had seemed not to recognize their names, but then, what reason would dragons have to truly pay attention to the specifics of the goings on of the human race. Regardless, telling him they were traveling to Bern was nothing special. Many people these days were making similar journeys.
"And what about the three of you? Where do the winds of these times steer you? Or do you even keep a destination in mind?" She just had a feeling that Aerious was the type to wander. Part observations of how he was equipped, part intuition, but she doubted that Aerious settled down for long these days.

Richter walked up to his two conversing companions, and while one fit the bill of "companion" far more than the other, the dragon had earned at least a passing address as such at this point. Despite his underlying dislike of the ancient being's snide remarks and heavy handed aloofness, Richter really couldn't give Aerious too much flack. The man had exorcised a demon out of him last night, after all, and the pink haired Ilian couldn't help but be thankful for that.
"Ilia's finest?" interjected Richter at Aerious's address after Clair had finished speaking. "I guess I'll have to take that as a compliment." The rebel warrior figured the dragon had in no way intended him to hear the phrase, but he figured he take what graciousness he could, even if it was obviously directed more towards Clair than it was him. "But yes, that's a good question," he continued, echoing his partner's inquisition. "I can't really imagine what plans a young pegasus rider and her two dragon companions could have ahead of them. Plan on wiping out any more Etrurian forts? I'm sure I could point you towards a few."

Aerious looked up as Richter joined them. He didn't feel in the mood for an argument now, so he decided he'd rather be cordial instead of pushing his buttons.
[red]"Well, I have no desire to get involved in your petty wars. What I seek is something more...lasting then a nation."[/red] He answered cryptically, looking over the pair. [red]"Humans are, for the most part, creatures driven by greed, fear and pride. However, among these thousands of dregs, there exist a few that have the potential to transcend that. Be they good or evil does not matter, such are abstract concepts applied after the fact. Many of the humans who have this 'spark' of potential, die well before they can truly let it flourish. Ambush and murder, betrayal and torment. Some..."[/red] He let his hand sweep forward at the pair of them. [red]"Endure this gauntlet and through a combination of events experienced, people met, and sheer luck, come out of it as something greater then their peers. Others fail and die, and still others lose their potential along the path, slinking into the darkness of daily survival. Never reaching for something greater then themselves, something that is beyond this world."[/red]
He paused for a moment, pondering what he'd said so far. A rather heavy discussion. [red]"This is your world, not mine, as loathe as I am to admit it. We cannot save you, you must save yourselves. However, it is the duty of the older and more experienced to pass it to their juniors. Myself and Nayru have decided to seek out those with this spark of potential, and to guide them to their destiny. Elly has the smallest spark, we've all seen it in her. But before she realizes her true worth, she will need to fail. She will need to feel pain, loss, hatred, the desire for revenge. All of these traps of the world that seek to pull the drive from them. Our job is not to carry her through it, but to ensure she survives it. She will walk her path, we merely ensure that she lives through it and keeps her eyes on it. I don't suppose I have to tell either of you that the path forward sometimes is not as clear as we would like it to be."[/red]
He looked over the camp, to ensure that Elly had not joined them. When he was satisfied they were still alone, he finished. [red]"We will not help her. For if she knew she was not in any danger, she would not grow. But we will guide her, and others like her, to make humanity into something that is actually worthy of ruling this world."[/red]
He finished his rather lengthy explanation and looked over the pair of them. He was rather curious to see how they would respond.

Clair felt a smile tugging at her lips as she heard Richter's voice, and relented to it, if only a little. It was replaced a moment later by shushing when Richter used the term "dragon" out loud. She didn't have much in the way of feelings towards Aerious, but she knew Nayru didn't want to spoil her friendship with Elly. It was a sad thing to be helping someone conceal their identity simply to protect their friendships.
Her attention stayed on Aerious all this while as he spoke. He had a strong belief in something, but she hadn't gotten to the core of him yet. He was being relatively open though, which surprised her. She simply didn't agree with everything he said.
"In layman's terms, it sounds as though you're talking about people with the will and ability to change the world around them. If this is the case, are you so certain that your path is the only one to reach this point? Are you so certain that you would inflict it on a young girl?"
The falcoknight's voice carried a measure of conviction with it. The truth was, that Clair aimed to be one of the people shaping the world around her. Part of what he said struck that nerve in her. She was determined to insure Ilia's survival as she had grown up in it, and if possible, to strengthen it. That was her path. It was a big goal to aim for, but acting as though she could achieve it had led to brief moments where she could actually make a difference. His ideas about good and evil being mere nothings bothered her though. Opposing forces and interests were a simple matter for the falcoknight to understand, but accepting evil would someday turn to destruction.
"Aerious, don't give up on us. There's more to the average man than fear and greed." Clair sidled up to Richter and rested an arm around his back, feeling herself fitting into place next to him. "It doesn't take suffering and pain to ignite purpose in a people. It takes belief."

Aerious let Clair speak and shook his head with a half smile. [red]"And were your life nothing but happiness and peaceful days, neither of you would be here now, in a position to change the world around you. When confronted by pain, there are two things any sentient being can do. They can retreat from it, hide away, fear it. Or they can stand against it, push past it, and overcome what was once a weakness. Tell me that who you are right not was not a path filled with pain, battle and loss?"[/red] He questioned her.
[red]"And you misunderstand my intentions. I push nobody down the path I have made. It is their path to walk, we are just observers and guides. If they wish to stop walking it, that is their choice. But it was her choice to set out on this little adventure, and she will decide where we go from here."[/red]
At her comment on purpose, he chuckled. [red]"Belief in what? Belief in others can be dangerous. Isn't that what the Etrurian's are doing right now? Blind belief in something...anything? When people are afraid they cling to something to believe in. Something that will protect them, or that they think will protect them. I have seen many generations of humans, endless lifetimes born and gone in a mere half a century, but fear prevails. Fear of the unknown, fear of loss, fear of death. It paralyzes people, and only a rare few have exhibited the strength to go out and face it. Those...those are the ones who have the potential to change on a grand scale. All I ensure is that they will get that chance."[/red]

"Who I am now, and what led me here had plenty of pain to do with it.... Battle is a way of life for me. However, the road I look back on feels less of pain and loss than it does of conviction and belief. It's not the pain and loss that got me to where I am. It only shaped how I arrived."
"I don't misunderstand your intentions, Aerious. I just don't think you believe there is an alternative." She hadn't really expected to change his mind. A dragon would be too set in their ways. She had hoped to at least see a bit of thoughtfulness cross his mind though. A willingness to consider other beliefs and outlooks. He wasn't going to oblige though. Nayru hadn't either. That was the problem with dragons, Clair decided. They had experienced so much that they never stopped to consider whether they were right or not.
"Belief that we don't need to repeat the mistakes of our forbears to learn what they knew. Belief that the world is not irredeemable. Belief that we can continue learning and growing...."
Clair paused, looking at the man standingn before her. He was only a bit taller, and yet carried hundreds of years of knowledge and experience in him. It really was a marvel of sorts.
"I don't think I'm going to change your position. Just be careful." To him, Elly was a goal, a resource, a product to be refined. She was still a young girl though. Ordinarily, Clair would be resistant to leaving Elly with someone like Aerious. She knew that Nayru was looking out for the pink haired girl though.
"I know you mean well." The falcoknight let the comment end abrubtly. Aerious' and Nayru's goal was worth pursuing. Even if she didn't have sterling confidence in the situation.

Yup, another great night roughing it. Sometimes, an immature rebellious little bit of her couldn't help but think, it would be nice to actually be a princess. Nayru knew damn well that the life wasn't nearly as tranquil and easy as popular culture tended to portray it as, but dammit if it wouldn't be nice to be guaranteed a place to live, people who liked you, and a soft bed. She didn't care to think which she would rank first, afraid of the truth - that right now she would have picked the bed over either of the other two. Her reinforcement was in working condition once more, so she could move with close to her normal poise, but her body was still seriously damaged, and that would take time to heal. The irony of yet another facet of herself having a strong facade while being broken within was not lost on her.
Aaaaaand Aerious was arguing with Clair. "Debating." Nayru suspected that it was too much to hope that they had been having a pleasant conversation about the weather, but at least they weren't at each others' throats. ...Yet. He must be on his best behavior. Maybe he and Richter had bonded over their egos? The younger dragon couldn't help but smile at her own joking observation, as much in poor taste as both the act and the joke had been in. Both men scared her a little, and knowing what Aerious was capable of worried her yet more, but they both seemed dependable, and what she had learned of Aerious was that there was much more to him beneath the facade of arrogance and aloofness he wore.
The thought that Richter, too, might be more than what he seemed - it occurred to her, but that was a thought for a different day. She held nothing against him, but so far he had done little to endear himself to her personally nor seemed interested in being best friends. Tacit acceptance of her continued existence was about as good as it was going to get, she figured, and that was good enough for her. It seemed as though she had arrived at a good time; the discussion seemed to be winding down, leaving her a passable opportunity to interject herself. Clair's last comment struck her, though a reminder of just how many tyrants had been born with those thoughts. Chuckling quietly to herself, she mumbled something under her breath, a saying that had always amused her. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
Ostensibly-meaningful quotation for the day muttered, Nayru continued on, striding to Aerious's side with a light smile. There was nowhere else she would have preferred to stand. Her next words came out louder than the former, in a conversational tone that they could all hear - it only occurred to her now that Aerious would have certainly heard her previous utterance, and the humans might have as well had they sharp enough hearing. She continued anyways. "Good day to you all." At least they were still alive. Elly, for her part, was - still alive, but off doing her thing. Feeding the nargles, she had said?

Richter remained silent as Nayru approached, giving the white haired woman a simple nod of his head as he turned his attention back to Aerious. The pink haired Ilian had remained decidedly silent during the short philosophical discussion, having already, in his opinion, sufficiently gauged Aerious's disposition the night before, and if anything, Richter felt only vindicated in this decision as the dragon spoke his piece to Clair.
The warrior shook his head, turning his gaze down to the ground in contemplation. Aerious's words did hold some truth, however, in that humanity is imperfect and flawed. Richter knew that very, very well. He had seen innocent people oppressed and killed over little more than greed, and had watched an entire city be razed to the ground on the order of one man. He'd seen men commit horrible atrocities in the name of a "greater good" and had even bought into the concept for awhile. But because of his self-importance, Aerious failed to see the entirety of it. Yes, humanity was flawed, but so was the world, as was every being in it, be they human or dragon. What really mattered was how people dealt with their flawed nature. The true worth of a man was not measured by his ability to make himself seem flawless, but by his ability to get up and press on even after falling on his face. No, Richter held nothing but contempt for the former.
Admittedly, it wasn't hard to imagine how 1000 years of life could inflate a being's head so large, but what angered Richter was how he viewed humanity as little more than trash, within which lay the occasional tool. He denounced the evils of humanity so harshly, and yet acted as if dragons were without imperfection. In that regard, he struck Richter as no worse than the Prophet. Aerious placed himself on a pedestal, and spent his time looking down upon others, deciding who was worthy and who was not.
But it was not his decision. It was up to every man to decide his own value, to decide whether to use his talents for good or for ill, concepts that Aerious mistakenly dismissed as arbitrary. It may have pained Richter to admit it to himself, but even the Prophet could have been great man, a leader that moved humanity forward. But he had failed to realize that the role of the strong was to protect the weak, not to destroy them. He abused the talents whatever maker there was had given him. That was why Richter opposed him. Like Clair had said, he still had hope for a better future.
"In one breath you dismiss good and evil," said Richter, speaking up, "and in the next you throw around concepts like worth and value." The Ilian raised his gaze to match Aerious's. "You might not see it, but while you stand there, pissing on our beliefs, you hold one yourself. You believe that these people have the ability to bring about a change that suits your arbitrary ideals, and yet you fail to recognize that those same kinds of people you speak of, those capable of change, have proven they are just as willing to lead the world into ruin as they are to lead it into greatness." He shook his head in disappointment, thrusting a finger at the dragon. How could someone so old be so unwise? "The real heroes of the world are the ones that manage to survive and persist, holding onto the last shreds of happiness still left amidst all of the violence and chaos that their betters create. You shouldn't be scorning the weak. You should be protecting them. They're the ones that have true strength. They're the only real chance this world has for peace."
Richter stood there, fuming for a moment, before realizing his failure to keep his composure. Taking a deep breath, he gently pushed Clair's arm aside, before quietly dismissing himself from the other three, walking off to collect himself. He'd rather not see Aerious again.

Clair pursed her lips and watched Richter move away from the cluster. A cloud of displeasure seemed to hover about him, almost as strongly as as the fog that shrouded Aerious in his own zealous confidence. Nayru seemed to be the only one capable of having a discussion without turning it into an argument....
She didn't apologize as Richter moved away, but turned her attention back to the others. Nayru had joined them just in time for that wonderful send off. What a nice thing to wake up to. It wouldn't have been so bad if Aerious or Richter spoke in less ascerbic tones, but something seemed to be setting Richter off, and Aerious was always like this, as near as she could tell.
"Good morning, Nayru. I hope your feeling better today... By the wind, I hope something good happens soon." The last bit was muttered, but still loud enough to be heard. Clair stretched her arms over her head for a moment before planting her hands on her hips and looking around. Her pegasus was outside of camp a short ways, lazily grazing and occasionally glancing over towards her rider. Clair shook her head at the beast. She was getting spoiled on the Sacaen grasses. Too much more of this and she'd need regular exercising.

Aerious turned to greet Nayru, but his attention to her was but temporary as Richter began speaking. His words were true enough, but wasn't that what he had just been saying? People are broken, weak, faulted by their fears. But among them are some that can grow to become more then that. Why was this boy getting so upset, they were saying the same things!
It would be a rare day indeed when a pig herder changed the world, but such things were not impossible. As his memory served, one of the greatest warriors of the age used to be a baker. But Richter just seemed to be looking for fault with the dragon, always assuming that his every comment was meant to be some kind of venomous insult. This was why he preferred not dealing with humans, they were just so jumpy.
[red]"History is the retelling of conflicts, from the point of view of the victor..."[/red] Aerious spoke, not to Richter directly, but aloud none the less. [red]"Every man thinks they are doing what is right. Either what they should do, what they want to do, or what they feel they have to do. Abstract concepts like 'good' and 'evil' are mere words to give justification to your actions. I've seen many a ruling body rise and fall in my life time, how would you define 'ruin'? The end of a family? A town? A city? A country? The continent?"[/red] He waved his hand dismissively as he turned away from Clair. [red]"What one sees as good may be evil to another. I can think of eight very specific people to prove that point. Why you humans get so concerned with those words is beyond me. Just admit, you are fighting to press your way of thinking on to someone else. Perhaps your way of thinking is against people being ruled by one man, but you are still pressing your will over his and those that follow his will. Why? Because you think it is 'right', or maybe you have no moral quandary and it's just a numbers game. More people against him then for him, therefore your way must be right."[/red]
[red]"You have a path, then walk it. Don't define it by right and wrong, define it by your vision. If you want the Etrurian army shattered, then march forward and do it."[/red]
Not likely to make himself many friends with this speaking, but quite frankly he'd had more then enough from Richter. Didn't humans grow out of tantrums before their first decade?

For a moment Nayru considered being very angry, but the boiling ball of loathing within her dissipated into the much larger mass a few moments later, leaving behind only a vague sense of pity. What war could do to people was - horrible. Perhaps Richter had once been a good man, even a great man, but now there was so little left that she was not sure there was anything worth saving. Short-sighted, immature; a fool clinging to the horrific world that allowed him to kill and kill and kill again. Merely applying a minor fix to a shattered world would do nothing to address the root of the issues; he would address the symptoms, not the disease that led to them. Even speaking of betters.
All he had uttered were worthless platitudes, the words of a man with no comprehension of ideals, not even the meaning of what he really said. Spurred more by a need to argue with Aerious than any actual interest in a civil debate - who, in fairness, had probably said something incredibly and unnecessarily incendiary, but Nayru knew that both she and Aerious wanted to believe in a world where fewer horrors existed, where humans and dragons alike could be free of the crippling flaws that brought down so many. They could not erase fear and anger or anything so drastic - and even those emotions had their uses for survival - but gradually strengthening and nurturing the more positive aspects of humanity and manaketes alike - there would be no need for a new world order or for blind belief or senseless hatred. A world in which people, regardless of race, would be united in a love of peace and progress.
So when Richter launched his Parthian shot and stormed away in a fit of pique, unable or unwilling to engage in a civil debate, she simply shook watched, holding back the acidic retorts that danced about her mind, letting out a sigh of disappointment. He didn't seem interested in talking anymore, but - perhaps Clair and Aerious would lend her their ears for a moment. If nothing else, it seemed a better way to end the argument than angry words. "If only we could be united in our dreams, rather than torn apart by them. All I wish is to nurture the goodness in - people, regardless of race. Perhaps none of us have the exact same methods, but I believe we all share a common goal, a common dream - a world in which excuses must not be made for its numerous flaws and horrors, but a world in which peace is a fact, rather than the interim between constant senseless wars. A world filled with people... perhaps better than we will ever be, avatars of this broken world that we may be."
She smiled, sadly, reminded of her discussion with Aerious weeks ago. It had all seemed so attainable for a brief moment of idealism, and yet here was a reminder of how far they really were from that goal. Humans and dragons both united in that sad fact. "However our dreams intersect, there is no worth in tearing down those of each other. Do not dreams surpass time, words, and war alike?" Spending time with Elly this morning had put her in such a good mood, too. Now melancholy and frustration were all that remained. It did amuse her that neither she nor Clair seemed to be quite as interested in ripping out each others' throats as Aerious and Richter were, but then Richter seemed to have a singular talent for showing how unbearable of a person he was, for a human or a dragon. "Perhaps we could all learn something from Elly." Nayru's smile grew a little wider, more genuine, as the corners of her lips quirked upwards. "Though... perhaps emulating her manner of speech would be unwise."

Clair was done with Aerious word games before he had the chance to finish. Whether he agreed with her estimation of what was right and wrong didn't apply to her purposes. What he said about taking a purpose and walking it, rather than defining it had some merit to it. The Bernese rebels fighting for freedom would hardly consider what she did "good", but she refused to remove right and wrong from the equation. Without a morality compass involved, there would be nothing to stop war crimes. Without right and wrong, the only guideline was victory at any cost. Such a price was too high for the Falcoknight. That was her reasoning, at least.
Nayru had entered the conversation late. A bit sooner and she may have carried a different tone of voice to her words. At least she seemed to genuinely desire peace and respect. Despite his words, Aerious' tone left her with misgivings about the man... dragon. When more dragons like Marcus and Nayru stepped forward, she would be more hopeful for a united future.
"Don't bother trying to establish a peace here, Nayru. These two are too quarrelsome right now." Clair sighed, letting Aerious go. Richter was already gone. It was taking a fair measure of her own control to avoid holding a grudge on Aerious. As such, she couldn't really blame Richter for his reaction. Time to shift onto more pleasant topics.
"How long have you three been traveling together, anyway?" Clair moved over to her tack and supplies as she spoke, but still threw enough attention towards the primary target of the question, Nayru, to avoid seeming as though she wasn't really listening. She checked her bags for the little bit of spare clothing she carried, located her water bottle, and laid out her iron sword, killer lance, and the new treasure. The golden tinted Thunderlance sizzled slightly as her fingers brushed it. It was odd how the lance seemed to react to her, it's glow brightening to something barely visible in the rising sun as she approached. She wondered if it was even enough for anyone else to notice.

It was a little depressing to hear that her earlier suspicion about Aerious' behavior had been accurate, but the idea of him being acerbic was nothing new; even her initial contact with him had involved that, being dragged away from Zelphiam without so much as a how do you do. She had learned to somewhat ignore it, more focused on the worth of his meaning rather than the verbal assault through which he tended to deliver them, but it was - somewhat unsurprising that people less used to it might take offense. Elly, of course, was just oblivious. It did little to excuse Richter's words and actions, but certainly provided an explanation for why neither of them had looked particularly happy.
"Mmmh. Not an entirely unexpected development." Her smile frozen in a vain effort at pleasantry, she glanced at Aerious out of the corner of her eye, silently wishing he was slightly more tactful. Richter had been a lost cause regardless, but perhaps they could have parted on more pleasant terms. At least Clair seemed to have a good head on her shoulders and a talent for being reasonable, both qualities that more people needed to possess. Perhaps - if she was lucky, Aerious would be willing to discuss a more friendly approach in the future. Nayru suspected the plan had about as much likelihood of success as convincing him that the Scouring had been a great idea, but she'd never know if she didn't try!
Clair's attempt to move the conversation in a more neutral direction was intensely appreciated; the younger dragon silently thanked the woman with all her heart, not having had many ideas for steering their discussion in a better direction and thus eager to jump to the new topic. "Elly was a more recent development; she joined a few weeks ago, shortly before we left Bern." Exactly how Aerious would prefer to portray their relationship she would leave to him if he wanted to speak up, but leaving it vague seemed harmless. They had been together longer than Elly had been a part of the trio, technically, if only by an afternoon. Even if she had been with Elly longer than with Aerious. Sort of. Not as actual companions. ...Depending on how you defined the concept.
Nayru decided to stop trying to figure out the issue in short order. "All of us had been traveling for - some time before meeting, though. There are so many interesting things to learn, some lessons more pleasant than others."
