"Hmm," was about the most eloquent response Nayru could come up with in short order to Taiel's revelation. She had never actually seen the gate herself, granted, but she'd always thought it was... guarded or something. That's what people did when you had a door to the depths of hell or dragonland or whatever, right? And she had always figured that the dragons who'd gone through Dragon's Gate would have closed the door behind them anyways. It wasn't that she didn't believe Taiel so much as that his words did not line up with her understanding of the situation, leaving her politely wary of where exaactly the truth lay. Perhaps it was somewhere between the two, or perhaps it was exactly like he said, but while she gained little by challenging him, neither was she obligated to take his words at face value. It was always possible he was just a normal ice dragon driven slightly mad by loneliness who had come up with his own version of the Gate's tales, after all.
"Ice dragons in Ilia. How fitting." She smiled, slightly amused but not mocking. This was Arcadia all over again, hoping she didn't forget what little etiquette she had ever cared enough to learn. "Which makes a storm dragon a bit of an outlier, but I am ever the itinerant traveler." Lynessa's words caught her by surprise; to be absolutely honest, Nayru had never really thought about it that much, she'd just heard them a long time ago and liked how it sounded. Which seemed like a pretty crappy excuse, but then at least she wasn't alone in that - she had met a number of humans who did the same. "Not religious, as such. I simply like the idea of everyone seeing the same sky, the same earth. A reminder that despite our differences, we are all travelers in the same world. Certainly better than fighting over whose gods are more real." Like Etrurians was left implied but unsaid, Nayru's ongoing dislike of the theocracy underlying her neutral tone. She had never met the Prophet, but Etruria's actions spoke far louder than their honeyed words.
The subject of Arcadia was less simple. It was the refuge of dragonkind in Elibe, that much was a given - but it was specifically the refuge of Dragons who chose to live in peace with humans, rather than simply survivors of the Scouring, and she didn't particularly knoow where either of these two's loyalties lay. Granted, neither of them seemed like frothing lunatics, but one never knew. She shrugged mentally, deciding the whole thing was beyond her pay grade. "And I'm Nabatan, not Sacaen. From... Arcadia." Which was not technically true, sort of, but it sort of was, and that was where Erim had taken her to gain some measure of sanity. So it was true enough to be a white lie at worst.

Taiel listened to the two females before huffing to himself and stretching. This would end up making the probably unpleasant sound of several cracks as his back popped before he resumed his somewhat lazy position once more. "I would not blame you if you two don't believe me. It is possible that they only meant humans can't pass through the Gate. Perhaps us dragons would be welcomed to walk through it's doors. I know not. However, I chose to remain here, to study the world of our forefathers and what they left behind." The man walked over to what seemed to be just a plain wall before hooking his fingers into it and shoving the wall aside, leaving a portal deep into the mountain beyond. "You didn't honestly think I'd choose to make my home out in the middle of nowhere for no reason did you?" He then closed the wall again before coming back over to get himself some soup.

"No offense was meant." Trying to talk to other dragons was like threading a needle, except the needle was made out of scorpions and the thread was actually a giant spider that was eating your hand, and everything was on fire. She had learned the hard way that while Arcadia's dragons were (apparently) a nicer bunch than dragonkind as a whole before the scouring, old scars still ran deep and titanic egos were easily ruffled; there was much etiquette she had never found interesting enough to learn. Now that it might actually be useful, she was regretting that decision.
Taiel's secret door was interesting enough to put that line of thought to pause, not least because she was suddenly reminded of a mad scientist-hermit of some sort with a torture-murder dungeon. She hadn't even tasted the sedatives in the food! The silly thought drew a small smile to her face, though for entirely different reasons than her following words suggested. "Secrets wrapped in riddles cloaked in an enigma." She was definitely curious what all might be down there when attached to his casual mention of what might have been left behind - ancient draconic ruins? Apocalyptic war dragons? The recipe for human stew? It was odd that he chose to live out here unless there was something truly fascinating. "It must be intriguing indeed. I thought Elibe's remaining dragons lived in Arcadia when not wandering the continent."

Lynessa pondered Nayru words, hoping the desert princess wasn't offended by her remark. Maybe she shouldn't say that. One thing she had learned when living with humans was that talking about subject like religion sometimes wouldn't be pleasant. Some fanatics, like what Etruria and her prophet had done in the last few years, might begin propagandizing theirs while ridiculing others. Thankfully, Nayru seemed to be more open-minded than those individuals. The answer she presented was smart and satisfying while keeping the positive atmosphere in their conversation.
"Ah, I see...You make a good point. I apologize if my question is out of place and sully the mood. Walk in the same sky and earth, huh? How nice if everyone could think like that, too." Serving herself a glass of water, Lynessa shifted her attention toward the fellow female dragon. This woman surely had a lot of experience and knowledge about this world, which were reflected in her words and demeanor. Compared to Lyn, Nayru seemed to be able to express herself freely and accepted new things without much difficulty. "I would like to learn about that concept someday... from you, if you don't mind. Of course, assuming you are willing to share. I found it quite interesting to be honest. This is something to ponder, really," she said as the ice dragon came with a request. She always liked to learn new things, especially if they were useful or interesting.
"This Arcadia....I've never heard of it. I know about Nabata, though. I guess I will not survive the desert if I go there, by the way. That place doesn't have enough snow," Lynessa remaked. If only she knew more about Arcadia, if only she knew it was a name of a city where dragons and humans living together, she would have more than that plain reaction. Of course there was some rumors or informations about Arcadia circulating around to some extent but unfortunately Lynessa had heard none. What she would give to visit the city even if just once....

"N-no need to apologize." Nayru raised her hands hesitantly, a little awkward but not as much as she regretted making Lynessa feel as though she had to apologize. It was REALLY weird to have literally any other dragon on the planet asking HER for help understanding anything, given her laundry list of issues, and even stranger that she didn't think the ice dragon was being sarcastic. Or maybe the joke was obvious to everyone but her. She wasn't even sure exactly what Lynessa wanted - people living under the same sky SOUNDED good and all, and she tried to live like that, but the hell if she had any idea how to convince humanity as a whole to do it.
"I am unsure of how much aid I can be to you, but i-if there is anything I can help with?" Good lord, this was Arcadia all over again, her being a gobsmacked little monster and not knowing how to react to anything. Of course then she made up for the awkwardness by being a horrible little devil and starting trouble to sate her curiosity, where now she was merely a broken woman. What an improvement! Truly a gleaming step upwards into the heavens. At least the self-flagellation thing never changed. She almost smiled at the irony. But seriously, stuttering? That was low even for her.
Haha. She wasn't really sure what to say about Arcadia... yes she knew that she wasn't supposed to spread rumors about it, yes she knew that she wasn't supposed to talk about it with mortals, but as far as the cooped-up old stodges in Arcadia knew there were literally no other dragons alive in Elibe, so there wasn't really a whole load of precedent about discussing it with other dragons. Maybe it would be okay? "Arcadia is where - some of the survivors of the Scouring went. A bubble world that ignores the state and fate alike of Elibe."
...Well that came out a little harsher than she had expected.

Lynessa stared at Nayru as she noticed that the other dragon was stuttering. Did she make her feel uneasy? It seemed something she said had come out wrong, or maybe she just read too much? Hmm...Anyway, it would be great if Nayru wanted to tell her more. "Sure. I am expecting to learn something from our discussion. After all, I have been thinking the same thing for some while, although I never really pondered it too deep."
While her kin had suffered defeat and humiliation from the Seven Heroes in the great war, Lynessa never thought Elimine's teaching was bad. Maybe she wouldn't like her as a person but her teaching was for the good of people. It was the believers, the fanatics spurred by Kraft's extreme teaching, that she disliked. As a dragon she didn't follow any religion created by humans but she knew them and learnt them to some extent, although it was only to satisfy her curiosity.
The ice dragon choked when she heard about Arcadia. The cup she was holding slipped from her finger and fell to the table. Now, now...Nayru wouldn't joke about this one, right? While it was pretty difficult to believe such safe haven for the dragons exist, the fact that Nayru was in front of her was a solid proof that there was a place for her kin somewhere. "There are such a place in Nabata? So the dragons that survived the annihilation at Scouring are there? Do you really mean that?" Her calm expression changed to one with delight and surprise mixed into one, showing how the news brought great joy for her. "If so...is it possible that my families are still alive there?"

"It is... ironically perhaps easier for our kind to consider the possibility, given what happened to dragons in the Scouring." Nayru smiled mirthlessly, almost sadly. "Among humans, dragons and their ilk are but genocidal monsters, utterly annihilated by the heroes of the Scouring in a defensive action to save humanity. What need would their kind have for compromise, for acceptance, against a race that they have viewed as a mere memory of a threat for a millenium? Should dragons return, would they not merely assume the threat was indeed real? Perhaps it is but the place of the vanquished and forgotten to dream of 'compromises' that allow them to re-enter the world once more."
It was even more depressing to actually say it than to simply think it... but it was the truth, even if not one she or any other dragon would ever want to admit. And what did that make of her dreams, the dragon wondered. Were her goals mere weakness, an attempt to negotiate a place for herself and others in a world that did not need them? Did she have the courage - the determination - to forge a path to equality, rather than acceptance? "...It raises the question of what is more important; equality, or acceptance? How far will the remnants of dragonkind go for equality, if their spirit has not already been utterly crushed? Will it take another great war - one that ends in mercy rather than genocide?" She shook her head. It was... strange to actually be able to voice this stuff. Aerious had been bitter to the core, and while he had tried to give her hopes an honest chance, they had not seen eye to eye in the end.
Perhaps it had been the weakness of her convictions that had caused that, she wondered, not his own failure to see them, that had caused the divide? Perhaps centuries later she was still naught but a naive fool who dreamed of an easy path to acceptance, a world that she could never in her wildest dreams hope to deserve to live in.
Maybe that was part of why she had left Arcadia in the first place? Nayru wasn't really sure, and she didn't care to think too deeply about it. She knew full well how broken of an individual she was, but Lynessa didn't need to know it as well. "A... small settlement of dragons and humans living in peace, yes. Those who have given up on reunification entirely, living their lives in a peace inured from the outside world... for the time being." Was that harsh, or simply true? She wasn't quite sure. "I know nothing of your family. I left Arcadia... many years ago, fool of a child that I was, and have not seen it in centuries."

Lynessa shared Nayru's sad smile as the other dragon spoke. They, the dragons, had difficult position in the world. The history had portrayed them as monsters, enemies that would bring harm to humanity. Of course as the winning side of the war the human historians had published heroic tales that didn't favor the dragons. Mostly they were the bad guys who would be defeated and slayed in the ending. "I... could understand that, more or less..." This conversation brought back the memories about when she had been rejected and feared by the villagers. Not that she could blame them though. Lynessa knew that if she were a human, she would have done the same when an ancient fearsome character from the legend appeared in front of her. This wasn't sympathy for Nayru's words but more like understanding from a fellow injured party. "Our position would have been reversed if we had won the Scouring but I guess that was a past that we had to let go....What I am trying to say is another conflict or war might not be unnecessary for us to get our place in this world." The ice dragon conveyed her believe in peaceful ways although she actually couldn't be completely sure herself.
"I think it's not impossible for us to live with human again. I am the living proof. Years ago, I met a human man who helped me in my gravest moments. I then lived with him and eventually married him. Of course I never published my existence to the world in fear it might bring unwanted attention, you know. I only told the villagers because I felt I shouldn't hide the truth, at least not from them," she said, looking up while reminiscing the past. Her lips curled into a happy smile, hinting that she had had good times. "It wasn't easy convincing them but gradually they began to accept me and see me as a family. There was some problem too after that but everything somehow worked out in the end."
"So be a little optimistic, Nayru. There are humans who could accept us, dragons...need some difficult persuasion, though," she said as she encouraged the desert princess, chuckling at the end. "I believe equality isn't impossible. I must say I don't want to be simply "tolerated" by humans. But we don't need another war. There is no easy way for this matter but we can always hope for a solution, preferably a peaceful one."
Lynessa looked a little disappointed when Nayru said she didn't know about the ice dragon's family but then she smiled and said, "I see. Well, that sounds like a nice place. And it's possible my people are among the dragons that live there." Tears of happiness gathering on her eyes as she spoke. "And Nayru, you have seen it yourself, haven't you? Humans and dragons living together...even only in a small hidden settlement. Maybe it's not impossible to create another Arcadia, don't you agree?"

"I wonder." Nayru didn't respond with more to Lynessa's initial comment, verging on argumentative but not quite coming out and saying it. They could never truly know, of course, her least of all, but she felt as though dragons might have been more merciful... even slavery was better than the genocide of an entire species. Dragons did have their... issues with pride, though. So maybe she was being too optimistic? Nayru wasn't really sure, so she held her tongue rather than argue with the older manakete. No one liked looking like an idiot.
Lynessa was a good speaker, Nayru decided as she listened to her counterpart's sermon. She spoke from the heart, her tone always appropriate for her words, regularly switching the style of her prose so as to... captivate her listeners? Convey her meaning? The younger dragon wasn't really sure, but it was interesting to listen to. She almost focused more on Lynessa's measured cadences than her words, but the subject jerked her out of her reverie in short order. Marrying? A human? Nayru could honestly say she'd never seriously considered it, certainly she had always hoped to be a part of a family to some degree, but she was far from mature enough to even consider motherhood. Her past relationships, even among the families she had grown close to, were always as more of a friend or older sister to the children, not... wife. And they'd all been married couples anyways. Besides, who would she marry even if she were to want to?
Veigue's face flashed into memory for a second and Nayru's composure instantly decomposed, her cheeks tinged crimson for an instant as she swore silently at the stupid flight of fancy that had even brought the subject to mind. BAD BRAIN. Their relationship wasn't anything like that, and he didn't think of her like that anyways. Even if she wanted it, which she didn't as Nayru reminded herself, she was enough of a wreck that she wouldn't wish herself on her worst enemy. ...Which, oddly enough, she didn't have that many of.
That... kinda seemed wrong for some reason. Oh well. Back in control, Nayru smiled politely at Lynessa, not really trusting herself to evince much more emotion, and certainly not capable of empathizing with Lynessa's desperate hope for her parents' well-being. She had nothing but Erim, and now not even her. "I hope you are right. I think Elibe has experienced more than its fair share of wars."

It seemed Nayru couldn't completely agree with Lynessa, she seemed to ponder about the topic, though. Maybe it was the difference in their experiences. Nayru probably had seen most of the world in her long journey and memorized every events and knowledges that she had obtained along the way. Compared to the desert princess, the other dragon had narrower experience about the world. Lynessa wasn't sure if she had to say more, she wanted to encourage her fellow dragon but maybe it wasn't the right time nor the right place. She looked rather disappointed but kept smiling as she spoke. "Well, lets just say I don't want to experience another Scouring..." she whispered. A wide smile hid the sadness behind her words.
Lynessa didn't miss the reddening cheek of Nayru. But she couldn't understand the reason at first. However, Nayru's blushing face was much cuter than her sorrowful expression. Say...maybe it would be a nice time to change of conversation. The topic about dragon-human relation surely was...a little unpleasant. She had to admit that. The ice dragon narrowed her eyes as she stared, leaning closer to the blushing dragon. She rubbed her lips with her finger as she thought, trying to analyze what reason had brought red into those soft white skin. "Hmm...I am sure she started blushing after I mentioned...my marriage? Strange...Why?" she thought. Lynesaa wondered if she should tell the desert princess how cute she looked when she blushed. But maybe there was something more interesting than that.
Lynessa grinned when she finally came into conclusion. It was just a wild guess, actually. People usually only blushed in certain occassions because of certain reasons. Maybe Nayru had thought about someone special, and the ice dragon's story was the trigger? "Hey...you aren't thinking about your lover now, are you?" she asked innocently.

"W-w-wh-"
Nayru's head dropped like a rock, the cooling stew before her rocking precipitously as her hands and her gaze like moved to her legs, the barest hint of strained muscle in her bare arms revealing how hard she was grasping her legs as if they were her only hope. Where she had begun stammering, the dragon lapsed into silence, alabaster skin drowned in brilliant crimson, what had initially been a transient blush consuming her face as the embarrassment erupted within her. "No, I-I didn't- I don't-"
Sputtering dropped to hesitant silence once more as she took a moment to be very acutely aware of just how much of an idiot she was acting like, but Nayru had never been good with other dragons at the best of times, and this was all reminding her too much of Erim messing with her again - the combination of emotions was completely overloading her ability to react at all. She felt as though she was a child all over again... which didn't exactly go with her look, but it was a heartwrenching reminder of how inappropriate for her this form actually was.
"I-" Nayru swallowed, trying to control her voice. She was vaguely aware that she was overreacting, but emotional control had never been her strong suit, and she had had the least idea of how to change that. "It is not something I have thought of before." A half truth, the subject had come up, but she'd never seriously considered it. She had never seen a mixed couple like that before, not even in Arcadia. She still couldn't meet Lynessa's eyes, so the white-haired dragon's gaze wandered around from her still-lowered head, unable to focus on anything and even less able to focus on the wily manakete.

The ice dragon was surprised at first but she then started chuckling. Nayru's reaction was so cute that Lynessa had to hold her desire to hug the other dragon. "Oh is that so? It's a crime, really. A beauty like you must have captured a lot of men, but it seems none has done the same to your hearts," she continued with her embarrassing remark, chuckling as she watched the blushing dragon. Lynessa wasn't trying to embarrass or bully Nayru, though. Those comments truly came from her heart. "Ah, I apologize if I said something that made you uncomfortable," she added after she realized that the desert princess might not like being praised too much.
Lynessa used her handkerchief to wipe the spills from the stew. It was quite amusing to see someone literally headbutt the table, causing some rocking and spilled stew. Her eyes sometimes looked up at Nayru as she wondered if their conversation made her angry or something. "Well, I guess you don't need to think about it too much. You probably still have thousand years, that's a lot of time to choose a mate. It's not something you should decide easily, after all." The ice dragon crossed both arms on the table and lean his head on them. From this height she could meet Nayru's eyes directly.
"Hey...If you are free we can go to my place. I would like to introduce you two to my family," she said. This would be the first time she invited another dragon to her house. Lynessa smiled as she imagined how fun it would be. "Who knows...." she spoke again. "....maybe one of my boys would be a good match for you," she teased., staring at Nayru.

She was red enough that she could probably pass for a fire dragon at this point, the small part of Nayru's brain that was casually competent helpfully suggested as the rest of it underwent spontaneous implosion. "Awuh," she eloquently mouthed, seriously considering banging her head into the table until it broke. The table, or her head, she would be fine with either. She didn't know how Lynessa knew exactly how to pry her way under the facade of stability and torture her mercilessly, or maybe it was more of a teasing thing, she was having trouble thinking straight. She- she hadn't really thought about that stuff much before, or, well, that wasn't true, she just pushed the thoughts down whenever they came up, oh god this was not a good time for introspection bad brain no think.
The minor hope that Lynessa's 'apology' gave her was dashed when she started talking about how much time Nayru still had to choose a mate and how she should go about picking one. This time she actually did headbutt the table, if only to hide her face. Taiel probably wouldn't be happy about that if he ever came back. The ice dragon's little side track about her family seemed like a perfect distraction, pulling Nayru's eyes up to Lynessa in the desperate hope of continuing an actual conversation... a hope that was then summarily executed when she brought up her boys. "Hawawawawawa." Another headbutt. Face-down on the table, with her hair strewn around her and hanging off the edge of the table, Nayru managed to resignedly murmur something coherent after a few moments "...You're doing this on purpose, aren't you?"

"No, I am not," Lynessa replied calmly, feeling a little amused by Nayru's reaction. "My bad...I guess you don't like this kind of talk, after all. I wanted to stop but you know...." She did feel a little guilty. The ice dragon laughed as she rubbed the back of her head. Okay, maybe she had teased her, but most of those words were serious, even the talk about her boys. There no way she could tell Nayru though. Taiel might have to buy a new table if she continued headbutting the table, it might have gotten few cracks from those bumps, after all.
Lynessa leaned a bit and touched Nayru's shoulder. "I won't say anything about....that things about looking for lover again," she said. It would be fun to continue with that conversation but the desert princess was in the verge of losing her mind. Maybe Taiel, who had been silent, felt somewhat amused watching them. "But my offer still stand. I would like to have you visit my place someday. Just look for Whitecliff village, a bit south from Arphen. It's just a small village but I am sure you will feel welcome there," Lynessa said, smiling. "Ice Queen Inn. Remember that name."
Now that they were clear and Lynessa could finally stop torturing Nayru (for now at least), the ice dragon then pulled something out her collar. It was her dragonstone, a beautiful green crystal attached to silver chains that went around her thin neck. Thanks to a certain smith who designed and made the necklace, she could always wear it safely hidden under he cloth like a normal accessory. "By the way...What's the color of your stone? Mine turned out to be green when I created it. I actually wanted blue but it seemed we can't change the color at him."

She murmured something incoherent in response, but wasn't really focusing on what to say. The rush of unnatural emotion was receding, letting Nayru think clearly again, and she was starting to realize just how strange that had been. Even by her standards. Whether or not there was anything to that effect beneath the surface, she knew it was not nearly that intense, and the massive, overwhelming tide of emotion was an exceedingly bad sign on its own - regardless of what had spawned it, she NEVER reacted with such overblown dramatics to much of anything.
The problem had been cropping up more and more lately, though, and it was a pattern she knew all too well. Too long spent keeping her emotions entirely in check, and eventually they... boiled over completely, and not in a cute, headbanging the table kind of way. The last time that had happened was... sixty, seventy years ago, at the Ilian farm she had visited with Veigue.
It was a somber reminder that, no matter how long she might live, anything good she could ever hope for came with a countdown to disaster. At least... Elly would never have to know. Small blessings, eh? She would stave it off as long as she could, but time waited for no one, and if she hadn't figured out a way to control herself in the last few hundred years, she certainly wasn't likely to do it in the next few months. That was, most likely, the maximum timeframe she had left with Veigue and Hayle.
Might as well try to make the most of it.
"...My apologies." Funny how a little impending doom helped to focus the mind. "The Ice Queen Inn. I will remember the name." She wanted to promise to come, but... Nayru did not like to make promises she did not know she could keep. It was entirely possible this would be her last few months, but at least she would not plague Lynessa's home with tragedy.
A dragonstone, eh? While every dragon's looked different, they were so often held with love and care, and often displayed, that it was rarely difficult to notice them from a dragon's perspective. At least that was how it had worked in Arcadia. She hadn't really met enough dragons outside to say much as to their tendencies. "Amethyst." With a wry smile, Nayru lifted her left hand to her left ear, from which the seemingly carefully-cut violet stone hung within a loop of solid gold. Given that it was the only earring she wore, in retrospect it might seem obvious. "You'd be surprised by how few people notice it. Sometimes the best place to hide things is in plain sight."
The moment was done for now, though. Her earlier thoughts were coming back to haunt her, and no amount of casual conversation would solve that. She needed a bit of alone time. "...I should go. There is much to consider. It was a pleasure, Lynessa."
