That was his que. Vincent leaped to his feet sword drawn and ready to go. The men were better armed but no matter, skill is what would carry the day. Hopefully he had plenty of it. Vincent looked as the gate slammed shut and the other two soldiers came running to their aid. "Best to let them handle the majority of the force. "Neil catch one by the legs and hold him down. Beating him will be simple if he can't move." It was a sound plan but how would it work practically?

"I can't hold the spell up that long, it takes too much energy! I... Here, go now!"
The pupil slammed both of his hands into the ground, sending a surge of dark energy into the cobblestones, before collapsing onto his knees, breathing heavily. That took effort.
A few meters away, though, the effects of his exertion were clear. One swordsman was writhing on the ground as a veritable horde of tendrils emerged all around him, smacking the fellow and wrapping around him in a frenzy of activity.
"Disable... him... take... weapon..."
A little ways away, the egghead was dueling the man with the lancereaver, and his friend the axeman was struggling against the other swordsman. Could they do anything more inane? Sonneillon shook his head, straining to catch his breath. And the baldie was worrying about them being incapable and useless...

Vincent took advantage of this chance. He quickly kicked the steel sword away from the man and with a powerful drop of his heel he he knocked the wind out of the man leaving him to writhe in pain. "You two switch opponents!" Vincent ran up behind the second man with a steel sword and placed his blade into his back. "Don't move." This should allow the other two soldiers time to deal with the third enemy but was Neil okay? Vincent looked over worriedly.
This was a bad move on Vincent's part however as the criminal quickly spun around knocking Vincent's sword away.
"Almost had me there," he teased before unleashing a flurry of attacks. Vincent jumped back dodging each blow until his foot landed on, of all things, the steel sword. His leg slipped and he fell to the ground. "Gotcha now," mocked the crook raising his blade and striking down on Vincent. Vincent blocked the attack with considerable effort, but taking a trick from Baako he kicked the man in the shin before he quickly rolled away and to his feet.
"You little!"

One target disarmed.
"Axeman! Go make sure that criminal doesn't get any funny ideas!"
As the burly crimefighter moved over, keeping his axe ready, Sonneillon changed strategies on a whim, seeing that the soldier was still dancing with the lancereaver man. Running over, the shaman grabbed Vincent's sword, which had come clattering toward him, and slid it back towards his friend. Then, mustering his courage, he ran up to the man, who was still focused on Vincent, and slammed both of his hands into the large lawbreaker's back, loosing a blast of Flux directly into him. The effect was astonishing.
The man's back arched as if he had been stabbed, and he crumpled to the ground, his eyes crunched shut and his body jerking as he wailed in pain. For his part, Neil had been thrown backwards as if hit by a runaway wagon, and the pupil lay facedown on the cobblestones, his body in a heap as he began his unconscious babbling again.

"Neil!!!" Vincent cried. He helped him out of a tough spot but he sent himself into shock in the process. Vincent was about to check on Neil when the man with the lancereaver struck a blow to the soldier.
"Dang it!!!" Vincent charged the criminal swinging wildly. Had he been fighting someone with proper training he would have been dead. Thankfully, this was no such opponent. The man retreated on the ropes. Raising his blade to block Vincent struck against the arm in a splay of blood. Disarmed the man began to scream in pain. The axe wielder came to his friends side and Vincent gave them the rest of his bandage wrap saving some for the one handed criminal.
"Hey Neil, you okay?" Vincent made his way to his friend's side. "You really saved me back there. "

"..."
There was no response for a while from the pupil, save some incoherent words that sounded like they were in a completely foreign language. After a good five minutes, Neil slowly came to, his first thought being self-deprecation and disappointment.
"Damn, my first... job... and I can't even cast without... collapsing. What a... joke I am."
The pupil pushed himself to his feet and promptly fell over again as the world spun and lights flashed in front of his eyes.
"I need... A minute... How's the... Situation?"

"Thanks to you it went off without a hitch. Well a crook lost his hand but, to most that's an acceptable loss." Vincent wrapped an arm around Neil's back and supported his shaky legs. "We have each one tied up in a wagon. First job and it went well."
Vincent grinned at Neil. "But I think we ought to have another training session. You did a number on the guy. Thanks again for saving my hide."

"Well then. I must've been out of it for a while, then..."
Standing up, supported by his friend, Neil managed a weak smile.
"I guess the good thing is that we got the job done. Now we just have to find egghead and get our pay, before he skips town. Whew."
Hearing his friend's thanks and request, Neil smiled more broadly, clapping him on the back.
"We're a team, Vincent. Friends look out for each other. You saved my back too, so don't mention it. Glad I could help you out!"
Finally able to stand on his own, Neil moved over to the balding soldier.
"So the job's done. How about our earnings, sir?"
The man looked over, grinned, and tossed a bag to Vincent, handing Neil a letter instead.
"Both of youse pay is in de bag. Thanks a bunch, guys. You were grand. That there letter's a recommendation from the city police cheef. That'd be me. It'll vouch for ye in any town in Ilia, it will. Take care now, lads. Ye're fine folk."

Vincent tried his hardest to keep his face straight and stern but he failed to contain it. "WOOHOO!!!" He let it out, feeling immediately self conscious afterwords. "Sorry."
Vincent was interested in the letter just as much as the pay but Neil had it. Opening the bag he took a look inside. It was a small job and yet the amount of gold was more than the average man sees in a month. Sure they had to split it but, wow.
"You and I, there is nothing we can't handle. Except maybe women. How are you in the love department?" Vincent didn't really know what he was saying. He was just talking at this point. He was motivated and ready to make a name. "Ready to head back to the tavern? It is lunch hour after all and I think... I think we should drink our fill to celebrate!"

"Hahaha!"
Neil couldn't contain himself either; the great feeling of gold in hand and a job under his belt made him as elated as his partner. This was awesome. They'd really done it! Their first job. Success!
"Heh, I'm not too sure about that. I've never had to deal with love much, really. I mean, we're still pretty young, and it's not like I had the disposable income for escorts or anything like that. But hey, Vincent, I think you've hit the nail right on the head. Let's celebrate! The whole world's open to us now. With a showing like that, I doubt we'll be anything less than heroes! Heck, we'll be up there with Barrigan himself!"
Success has a way of making young men say ridiculous things.

"Who is Barrigan!?" Vincent excitedly asked. To many it would be a stupid question but to him, he was not well versed in the happenings of the world. "But that can wait. Have you ever been drunk before? I haven't, but tonight, is the night that marks the future!"
The soldier with the lance found the two boys' antics enjoyable but he felt the need to impart his words of wisdom and caution. "You two did a good job today, and it's fine to celebrate but don' let it git to ya heads now. Pride cometh before the fall."
Vincent listened respectfully but as a whole he ignored the man's cautioning. "Thanks."

"He's that Ilian hero from the legends with the super-spear, man. He's supposedly the guy who made Ilia. But yeah, whatever. Let's go! It's a party tonight!"
The two friends made their way back into the tavern, where Neil ordered a pitcher of ale. This was their first real success, and they needed to celebrate accordingly. The corner table, a brimming pitcher, a nice midday meal... What more could they need? This was the life indeed. Making coin, helping people... An honest living.
"Cheers, Vincent! To friendship, teamwork, and success!"

"Here here!!!" With a toast and a clank of mugs Vincent began to heartily chug his drink. "Blech! Th-this is some strong stuff." It took him by surprise. Unknown to Vincent was that he was a lightweight and the ale was strong. It didn't take long before he began to slur his speech. "They ssssay alcohol is the nectar of the godssssss. I ssssayyyy bah!" He couldn't have had more than half a glass but he was slipping fast.

"Mmm."
Neil was used to strong beverages; as an urchin, he'd had to participate in his share of drunken revelry celebrating some theft or prank. He'd been like Vincent when he first started, so he was well able to empathize.
"Take it easy," he advised while steadily draining his own glass. "Too much too fast and it'll make you woozy. Worse, you'll lose your lunch altogether, or pass out. Wouldn't want to have to drag you to the room, now, would I?"
Chuckling, Neil relaxed as the familiar warmth of alcohol slid back through him. He remembered drinking straight from the bottle back with Leroy and the Laus Louts... Those were some interesting days. He wasn't sure if he'd ever want to go back there.

"Don't worry about me. I'm fiiiiine." Vincent noticed a young bar maid passing by. "So fiiiiiine. So, anyway, do we have our next job picked out or did you want to hold off on all of that for the moment?" Vincent leaned back and closed his eyes. He wasn't sleeping but rather reflecting. "You're a good friend Neil. But if you throw yourself at people to save me I'll punch you afterwards." This was at least the third time this had occurred. Vincent would get in over his head but it was the others that suffered for it. Some more than others. He thought of Burt and Liror. "I don't want anyone to die for me, and I can't ask you to stay out of the thick of it. The only thing I can ask from you is to come back alive."
