All this room and nowhere to go. Both these feet and no motivation to go. Ulai ripped the page out of his small journal. That was just god awful. No way to start a book, he must have writers block today. So the young man stood, and walked toward the door to the tavern. He was in some small town in the territory of Araphen. Luckily like most towns all around this great land of saints, there were taverns aplenty. Not that Ulai was on to judge, but these 'humble folk of the land' partook in the same debauchery as those in any cities. They just kept it a little quieter here. Ulai walked down a narrow alley. He was intensely immensely bored, and needed something to change that. HE walked through the narrow passage into a somewhat busy street, and saw several young men who looked like they were looking for entertainment themselves, be it drink, a companion, or a test of ability. Ulai had been drinking, but he could probably take a country mouse or two.
As one of them drew close to him, Ulai tensed his body, ready to receive a blow, but the other man just walked past him. Shrugging, then making a bemused expression that he was relaying a sense of, 'I don't know why I did that either' to himself, he brought a hand to his mouth and yawned. A few older citizens shot him looks as he passed them, no doubt suspicious of the sword at his hip. So for their benefit, Ulai began to pretend to be eyeing strangers up along the street, bringing his right hand to lightly hold the hilt of his sword. It wasn't long til the crowd was behind him and he came to his little tent outside of town. He lowered himself next to it, and taking his supplies began to make a fire.

Ulai lay flat on his back next to the fire. He stared up at the stars, trying to pick out constellations. He'd never been good at seeing shapes in the stars. To him they looked random, he never saw a hunter, or a woman sitting in a chair. Ulai had his saber across his chest, and he fingered the hilt lightly. The fire was far away from where the young man slept, but he liked that, it kept him from getting too hot. Being used to the heat of Nabata, most people assumed he preferred to be hot, but he loved the cold, it was completely new to him. Nabata and southern Etruria had been the same almost every day, making any day with a change a wonder to the swordsman.
Ulai placed his right hand behind his head. He should probably sleep inside his tent, but this spot felt so nice. If he didn't get too lost in his mind, he could probably drift right to...

Ulai woke the next morning before the sun. The fire had long since gone out, and the young swordsman shoved a stick through its coals to spread them apart. He stretched his arms high above his head, his hands balled into fists. A smile crept over his face as he heard the first of the birds chirping off in the trees of the nearby forest. It had been a good nights rest after a good week of walking. He was entirely unsure on how he'd be spending his time in town, or how long he'd be staying, but he surely didn't expect to stay long. The young swordsman began the long process of rolling up his tent and carefully sorting and storing all of the various supplies he used in his travels. It was very dull, but the Nabatan hummed a soft happy tune as he worked. It was one his mother'd sung to him in the crib, one about a group of people fleeing an villain, while being led by a wise old man with a cane. He could never remember the words to sing with the notes he had burned into his skull.
As he finished placing his cup on the top of the items in his pack, Ulai heard it. A piercing, blood curdling scream. Ulai sprinted toward the source of the noise, which sounded like it came from a house on the edge of town. Ulai pumped his legs against the cobblestone, his saber firmly held in his left hand, swinging with his arms as he headed towards the noise at top speed. By the time he reached the house he saw a crowd gathered around an open door. "What's the matter?" Ulai asked. He was answered by a woman, who spoke in a hushed whisper, "A monster broke into Ingrid's house." Ulai eyed her suspiciously. "Uh-huh." Ulai slowly made his way toward the front of the crowd, then began to head into the house. He was grabbed by a man a little larger than him, firmly on the arm.
"You can't go in there!" The man barked at Ulai. Ulai blankly looked back at the man. "I think you'll find I'm quite capable, and have clearance to go through an open door." The man now eyed Ulai suspiciously. "On what authority." Ulai took a moment to scan the crowd as they looked back at him. What could get these people on his side? "I'm a monster hunter."

"A monster hunter?" The man's face brightened with a flicker of hope. Dear god, he though Ulai was being serious, the swordsman really needed to work on the voice shift of his sarcasm. More people turned to look at Ulai now. He puffed his chest up a bit. "Yes, I am a monster hunter sir. This looks like the work of a Doomhound, or maybe a Blackwraith. They used to run amok in Nabata, shame to see they could be creeping in up here. If you don't mind sir, I have a job to do." He turned and walked toward the house. Good, they took his sarcasm seriously, and now he had to follow through. People had always said it would be his mouth that killed him.
The swordsman glided cautiously through the open door. There was no noise coming through the small house, it was eerie. Ulai slowly unsheathed his sword. He held it with both hands as he turned around a corner in the hallway, but then heard a creak from the back of the house. He quickly darted back around the corner and ran to the source of the sound. He flung a door open and found himself in the house's kitchen. He saw the tail of a fox as it crawled through a small hole near a corner on the floor. Ulai kicked a fallen pot over the hole. Then he felt something wet through his boot. He looked down and saw a small pool of blood, and a young man breathing slowly. Ingrid's husband presumably. Foxes didn't attack people, this was an odd situation. Ulai cut a piece of cloth off the man's short, and applied it to the man's arm, where the blood still seemed to pump from at a slow rate. He lifted the man, still holding the cloth on his arm, and carried him outside of the house.
A woman came running up to him. "Hilton! Oh Elimine is he alright?" "He's fine, the monster only wounded him." He passed Hilton off to two large men, and turned to the woman he assumed to be Ingrid. He had no clue as to why she'd have been out of the house, but he said, "He'll be alright if you take him to someone who can stop the bleeding." Then without another word he ran off in the direction of the fox.
