A day and a half later
The base of the mountains on the Ilian side weren’t much different from the Sacae/Etrurian side, save for it somehow feeling even colder. A frown had been frozen on Charlotte’s face for some time now. She could barely move her stiffened right hand, and her cheeks were wind-burned from their trip down. Seeing the small tavern just ahead was a huge relief to the blonde; she was ready to dry her boots by a fire and take some time to rest before making the next leg of her journey to Arphen. It would thankfully be shorter than the last, no more than a day and a half’s travel by foot from where they were now.
Charlotte stayed quiet as she followed her guide, until they reached the tavern door. After slipping past the group of travellers near the peak of the mountain, they had largely kept quiet and to themselves, not wanting to alert any other travellers to their presence. Synkkis was sharp guide and kept them on the right paths, which Charlotte knew she wouldn’t have been able to do on her own.
Still, as knowledgeable as the mage was, there was something… off about him. Charlotte had no real reason to believe that was so, but just had a feeling every-time they spoke, that he was holding something back form her. She didn’t pry because, frankly, it wasn’t her business to ask, even if whatever he was hiding interested her.
In front of the worn and weathered door, Charlotte turned to face the tall, white-haired man. For the first time in hours she offered a smile. “I appreciate you getting us this far, Synkkis. I’d have to say, you’re the best guide I’ve had in some time - and I travel a lot.”
Touching her left hand to the door, the blonde looked away from the man for a moment, fumbling in her cloak before producing a leather sack, handing it to Synkkis. “Here, for your trouble. I’ll be able to make it to Arphen on my own after I rest, but if you’re still in the area when I’m done…” Charlotte winked, her smile twisting to a smirk, “wouldn’t mind having the best guide in all of Ilia help me through the pass again.” Pushing open the door, Charlotte gave Synkkis a nod before ducking into the tavern.
[Exit Charlotte]
