Merric had heard news of the battle before it ever came to pass but he stayed away out of fear. He heard how Illian mercenaries and those with no ties to the land came to save a city with no meaning to them and yet he cowered and made excuses. He heard of the costly victory and how the heroes triumphed over the villainous Hargus and only then did he decide to go. Despite how much pride he felt in being a Sacaean he coward when the lands needed him most.
Now here he stood before the wrecked northern walls upon the blackened earth. The ground no longer swayed with green grass, nor did it hold the beauty befitting a wild land. It was ruined. He walked through the wall’s hole and looked around the city. It was in the state of repair but there was something about it that told him the city would never be whole again. Politicians had a field day with the idea of Sacae becoming a super power but… he sighed.
He did not deserve to stand upon these grounds, he did not deserve to stand where so many died and he ran away from. He hung his head shamefully and walked deeper into the city. He saw a small vendor selling goods, or giving them away to those that could not afford them. The small man looked at Merric with kind eyes and held out a loaf of bread to usher him over. He obliged but refused the bread. “Have you come to help rebuild the city?” The man asked.
“I don’t know.” Merric replied. “I just had to see the city for myself.”
“Eh, well you look too scrawny to carry your own weight anyway.”
Merric did not combat the offense. He was right, he was a very thin and lanky man. He hated exercise too. He simply nodded at the man and began to look for a tavern, maybe he could find a job or SOMETHING to help make up for his absence.
