"..You make it seem as if I won't ever be back."
Was that merely reassurance? Was it a promise? Was it a mutual undercurrent they felt, or was the assassin merely doing what he did best with females - screwing up?
"I.. mean really. We jumped from jail break to travelers to kidnapper hunters and to.. well I guess now lovers? Or perhaps.. a 'companion with benefits'. Actually I like that term a bit better.. makes it sound a bit more.. respectable. No offense."
Hah! Ryu's face slowly creased into a smile, his eyes still betraying the typhoon of conflicting emotions whirling within. There was no guarantee. There was nothing that could really give him peace of mind... Their lines of work were both on the... more daring side. Monster hunting? Assassinating? Not as much job security and certainly not as high of a life expectancy as compared to, say, a baker.
But anyway, Mila was continuing...
"All.. of that.. has to be driven by something. Although I.. do not know if I know what that something is yet."
That feeling did exist in both of them. It was more like a bubble under the surface. The faintest scent of someone who sets your heart aflutter. It was powerful, inexplicable, and, to the best of the assassin's knowledge and the utmost extent of his good-natured frustration, uncontrollable.
It was, however, frustrating that he could not be there to protect her. Although he appreciated his new title as a 'good distraction,' he knew that, no matter how much he tried to avoid it... the future was here. This had been one night, and the rest of their lives stretched on, two roads that crossed and now diverged and almost instantaneously disappeared into the mist of uncertainty.
The final kiss was short, sweet (pun intended), and burning. It imprinted itself like a brand on the assassin's lips. Ryu was, for all intents and purposes, well and truly wrapped and tied around the beautiful mage's finger.
"Right. So now... Now we head forward. Our roads crossed here and now, one intersection in space and time... And I pray, by whatever gods there may be... That there will be another intersection.
Right, Mila. Until then - for I refuse to believe that this is the last we'll see each other - stay safe, stay strong, and... Carry a little of me with you."
Smiling wryly, the bittersweet tang coming through in full force, the assassin moved to his weapons cupboard, withdrew an orately carved dagger and its leather sheath, and presented it to Mila, bowing and extending it.
"This was a gift from my mother - when she lay dying, she gave me this dagger. She said that I should return it only when we meet again - and so I give this to you. Hopefully it will be of use - and I know I will fulfill my promise to my mother, for I will see you again.
Until then... Goodbye, Mila, dearest. Let's go bump off a hired thug.
