A breeze of wind rustles the leaves as a faint animal cry can be heard in the distance. It has been two days since passing the last village and my food supplies are running low. Simple jobs like cleaning and healing small wounds only offers so much financial stability. Lately I have been having blackouts resulting in me being lost in the forest. It feels as if part of me doesn’t want me to settle in a town, I am driven to travel and I’m not certain as to why. My surroundings are unfamiliar which makes finding a place problematic. Something this thick woodland lacks are trails to civilization. The warm and humid environment doesn’t exactly help relieve the hunger. Having grown up among hunters I am able to pick out berries that are edible but there aren’t many sources to get them from. The small amount of berries I got access to didn’t offer much sustenance. I need to either find a village or hunt for food, but I’m not sure how to do either.
It is safer to hunt but I have never done that myself before. I was taught how to make traps and the basics of hunting but at the end of the day others did it for me. Whenever I was put to the task I felt empathy for the animal and was unable to end its precious life. The question now is whether my survival is more important; given endogenous mechanisms, it is. I was shown how to make a plethora of traps but forgot the details of most.
After thinking for a while I remember a trap which was rather effective in catching rodents and small birds. As I grab a flat limestone and a few leftover berries out of my pouch, I start working towards the last element.
