The trip to Caelin was surprisingly long. The guild had a request to help deal with some banditry in the region and what better foe to whet a newbie's blade against than a bandit? After the siege of the City of Heroes reports of banditry had disappeared virtually overnight so the fact that Caelin was now so overran by them was more than a little disturbing. Zane assumed the citizens themselves became desperate creating a new wave of banditry but who could really say? Maybe it was just more of Elibe's oldest pest re-surging like a nest of rats.
Zane was assigned to Melissa's team, but it would be more accurate to say she was assigned to his. Zane was put in charge of his small group with Melissa there to oversee. If things progressed smoothly she and the others would follow his orders until victory was theirs but she was free to ignore or outright refuse his orders if she saw a better way. This was a learning experience but it was no war game after all.
The larger party had split off already and so Zane, Melissa, Robert, and Gloria were all together on a green hilltop concealed by trees. From their position they could overlook the small 'village' below. The place was ransacked and the villagers were long gone. Most of the buildings were dilapidated or collapsed entirely. Zane swore below his breath at the sight of it.
"Keep a cool head, boy. We're only entering the village to flank the enemy once the commander has drawn them all out to him. So don't go getting eager to rush in there and muck things up." Robert meant well and his advice was sound but ultimately irrelevant. Zane had no intentions to do such a thing, he wasn't a hothead and it wasn't as though the village had citizens to dash in and save either. This was a simple extermination, or routing mission, yeah that sounded less murderous.

Since Zane’s acceptance into the guild, life had changed in the worse kind of way for Trenton. His mother ensured that he was constantly busy, and he had never found the time to talk to Zane. From early morning to late at night, he was cooking, sewing, cleaning, or running errands. Only after all his chores were complete and everyone was asleep did he find the time to practice magic.
He was getting better at it and had realized his exhaustion limit. He could easily reproduce a stream of light four times. If he pushed it to a fifth, he usually found himself waking up on the ground, but he was sure that with enough practice, he would improve.
The day that it was announced that Zane would go on his first mission, Trenton couldn’t help but feel excited for his buddy. This was a momentous occasion, and it would make him officially one of the guild through more than ceremony. Although, he also couldn’t help but feel that after this event, the difference in his and Zane’s lives would increase. At this rate, he would be returning to his alone time, just as the days before Zane’s arrival. He knew he had to prove himself soon or risk losing all friendship with Zane. He needed to be a member of the guild. Trenton wasn’t sure what madness overcame him, but as the party of mercenaries left, he had secretly followed. He wanted to trail them on the mission and jump in if needed like a valiant hero. If he did that, surely, they’d see his worth. So far, he had been extremely lucky and no one was aware that he was watching them. His mother, Zane, and the rest of their group were gathered in the tree line, staring at something below. Trenton wondered what they saw, but he would have to wait until they moved out to see for himself. There was no way he was going to risk getting caught now, not after he came this far. So, he remained flat on his belly and hidden in the underbrush of the woods, waiting and watching.

The hardest part of the entire mission for Zane was the waiting. "Are missions always like this?" Zane was sitting high in a tree kicking his legs lazily. "I'm glad I'm here but there's a lot less action than I had imagined there to be."
"Our job isn't just about fighting and killing people you know," Gloria chided Zane from the ground. "Most of the time our work has us as little more than bodyguards. If anything this job is actually the exception, so don't get too used to it."
"Combat is the exception?" Zane covered his eyes to better peer into the distance without the hindrance of the sun. "If you say so, but tell that to the monster hunters. This country is nothing but a war zone with people scraping by to try and deny it with a false sense of stability."
"I didn't realize you were such a pessimist." Robert Was sitting and leaning on the tree Zane was sitting in. He had a habit of meditating and he had just come out of it in time to hear him.
"Nah. I'm an optimist. But I've also seen my fair share of things going on that even I can admit its a mess. So, I'd say I'm at least a realist, but I still have faith that these monsters can be dealt with in time. See the difference?"
"Eh, sure?" Robert just scratched at his head.
"Look alive," Gloria's voice was hushed but sharp. "The commander is moving." In the distance a small explosion destroyed one of the town's decrepit but still standing gates. From there the mercenaries moved in.
"Woah!" Zane looked in Awe at the sight. "Guess we should move then!" Zane hopped down from his perch and held his scabbard at the ready. Breaking the seal on his blade he began to move down the hillside. He was quick but quiet as he did so.

Trenton’s heart beat wildly in his chest as he watched the mercenaries leave the tree line. This was his moment. His time of sneaking behind them and waiting in the underbrush was over. Abandoning the caution he had taken earlier, he sprung out of his covering and rushed forward clumsily and stopped at the tree line. He clung onto a tree branch as he watched the mercenaries sprinting down the hill toward the village.
He watched as they clashed weapons with the enemy, and his palms began to sweat as he anticipated joining them. Each of the seasoned warriors knew exactly what they were doing. Not a moments hesitation could be seen among them, but they weren’t who Trenton was primarily concerned with. His green eyes shifted to Zane. He wanted to be sure that Zane didn’t come to any harm, so once he saw one of the raiders rushing his friend from behind, he knew he had to act. No one was going to surprise his friend on his watch.
He half-ran half-slid down the muddy hill before sprinting behind the enemy with a loud cry. The enemy stopped short of Zane and turned around. Trenton clutched his satchel tightly, which held his tome, and shouted the spell he had perfected. A string of light shout from his hand and whipped the raider in the middle of the forehead, knocking him over. The man fell into the mud at Zane’s heels unconscious. “Got ‘em!” Trenton smiled at his victory. He hadn’t even had to break a sweat. “You alright, Zane?” he asked brightly as the battle raged on around them.

As the small group hurried down the hillside the sounds of combat grew louder and louder. Zane's heart began to beat faster as a mixture of excitement, adrenaline, and fear consumed him. He trained for too long for this and now it was finally time to have his go at a real job. The rear gate was all but abandoned in light of the assault and Zane took the lead to charge in and target the one guard it had left. The bandit and he locked eyes, ready to do battle when Gloria pulled ahead of him with her incredible speed and cut the man down as easily as she would have a flower stem.
Zane was taken back by the amount of blood that came pouring from the bandit's wound. It pooled beneath the body and Zane found himself in a trance-like state until Robert clasped his shoulder jolting him out of his daze. He jumped. "Snap out of it kid. We need to keep moving."
"Right. Sorry." Zane forced himself to move past the gate and the body. A small trio of bandits barred the path and charged the mercenaries back. This time Zane properly steeled himself and took the first swing. The bandit was not nearly as trained as Zane but he was no pushover either. The bandit stepped back causing his sword to swing wide. Zane appeared to have been left wide open and the enemy struck down only to be surprised by a full dancelike spin that knocked the enemy's axe-head aside.
Zane followed through his attack but found himself hesitating. If he struck this man, enemy or not, he would bleed and likely very well die. His hesitation slowed his strike and the bandit managed to avoid the brunt of the blow suffering only a minor wound to his right side. "You're gonna regret that!" The bandit lashed out and charged before a spearhead skewered through the side of the bandit's head. Zane could see the spearhead through the bandit's gaping mouth and the red that splattered as it was wretched out.
Zane began to hesitate again; these deaths were completely thoughtless and grim. "Kid, pay attention!" Zane turned to see a man closing in on him, murder in his eyes. He had little time to defend himself but there would be no need. There was a loud crack as a small wisp of light passed Zane's head, nearly hitting the wrong target and knocked the attacker out cold. "You alright, Zane?"
Zane looked to see his savior was Trenton and his eyes went wide. He wanted to be grateful but that thought was overtaken by the very fact he was here to begin with. "Trenon?" Zane exclaimed catching the attention and Ire of the others. Their immediate area was cleared as the more experienced mercenaries did their work. Robert stomped on the knocked out Bandit's head killing him beneath his heavy armored grieves. "Why are you here?"
Robert interrupted, "It doesn't matter now. We need to rendezvous with the commander. Stay behind me kid. I'll be your shield!" Robert planned to protect Trenton. It wasn't a bad formation either, Robert could handle the men that got close and Trenton could pick them off from a distance to ensure it did not happen. The only problem was no one had faith in Trenton's capabilities and saw it as forcing Robert from the battle.
Zane clutched his blade tighter. "We are almost to the thick of combat. Keep Trenton safe and the rest of us will take point. Its too dangerous to let him run back out alone now." Zane gave Trenton a concerned look as if to ask why he did this and if he knew how it would hurt him later.

Trenton looked up at Robert with a frown. “I don’t need protecting; I am here to help.” He then added with a profound smile, “I already saved Zane.” He then punched the air enthusiastically before adding proudly, “Come on! I’ve got three more good hits in me.”
“Trenton!” a roaring voice boomed. Trenton jumped and turned to see his mother barreling toward him. “Are you out of your damn mind!”
“M-Mom?” he stuttered as he stepped back.
“What are you doing here?” Her eyes held a mixture of fear and fury. Trenton feebly lifted the tome in his hands. There conversation was cut short as a new wave of enemies came their way. “Stay behind Robert!” she barked as she dived back into the fray.
Trenton did as he was told and faced his back to Robert’s. “I’ve got your back,” he said reassuringly, but Robert only replied with a grunt.
The enemy closed in around them. The mercenaries fought one off the enemies with ease, and Trenton waited for his opportunity to strike. Every time an enemy got close enough for Trenton’s magic to reach, they were struck down by another mercenary. Finally, Trenton’s time came. Just as he had practiced, he recited his spell and a stream of light struck the enemy on the head. He fell to the ground unconscious with a loud thud. He struck another, and knew he was at his limit.
He had one more strike in him, but he ran the risk of passing out. The fourth strike usually emptied him of his energy and passing out here was the last place to be out. Sweat was beading on his forehead, and his legs were feeling shaky.

Trenton was a good shot against the bandits that didn't know he was there but the more shots he took the less useful he would be when the tough got going. Even worse was the fact he completely lacked the power behind his attacks needed to kill. Sure, hitting his opponent in the head had knocked them cold but they were still going to rise later, and what if he hit an arm? A bruise and tickle wasn't enough. Zane hated getting angry with Trenton, he understood full well why he did what he did, but his recklessness could cost them.
The group proceeded forward once the bandits' ambush had failed so miserably. They were closing in on the bulk of the bandits and that meant their flanking maneuver was a success. Suddenly Zane halted his approach to the surprise of the others. "I hate to do this, but I'm turning command of this side of the mission back over to you Melissa. I won't risk sending Trenton into the thick of it and I am the weakest fighter out of us here." He sparred a glance for Trenton in order to make sure he wouldn't try to argue. He knew Trenton well enough that he gave him a stern look of disappointment. If Trenton was still as much of a people pleaser as Zane thought he was his look should be enough to reign him in.
"That is probably for the best," Gloria agreed. Robert merely grunted again. Zane moved to join Trenton's side. "We'll go back the way we came, it should be clear of enemies." And it was, except for one. Trenton had knocked a bandit out cold but he was rousing from his uneasy slumber as they spoke.

Trenton wanted to protest, but he knew his time here was done. He only hoped his usefulness left a better impression on the others than his unauthorized attendance of the mission.
He clutched his spell book tightly as he nodded at Zane, indicating that he would go along without argument. His only regret was that Zane was stepping down from the first mission he was supposed to lead. “You two get going,” Melissa said with a piercing glare at her son before she and the others moved on to follow the action.
Trenton looked to Zane with a feeble smile. “Well, I guess it’s just you and me.” Zane appeared as if he would speak, but if that was the case, Trenton would never know for someone seized his ankle and yanked him to the ground.
His chin smacked roughly against the ground, making him bite his lip and splotching his vision with stars. As he was dragged backwards, he turned himself over in time to see the bandit stabbing down at him with a dagger. The dagger barely missed and instead struck the soft earth.
Trenton was now underneath the crazed man as he struck down at him again. The blade cut against the soft flesh of his cheek before stabbing back into the dirt. Trenton fought to throw the man off him, but he was far larger and heavier, and he relentlessly attacked with his dagger.
Trenton’s surge of adrenaline kept him from feeling the sting of the dagger cutting up his arms as he scraped and clawed at the man, and he repeatedly yelled the only spell he knew, but it was useless. He felt as if he had been pinned for several minutes, but only a few seconds had transpired since he hit the ground.

Zane's grip tightened around the hilt of his blade as Melissa told them to get going. He wanted to stay, he wanted to fight, but here he was fleeing the battlefield in order to look after Trenton. He tried to tell himself that being a leader is not all about fighting in battles but... today it was supposed to be.
"Well, I guess it's just you and me." Zane's throat tightened at Trenton's words. He could tell Trenton knew he messed things up, but he didn't think Trenton felt any real remorse for it. He looked at Trenton with a sense of exhaustion. What could he even say to Trenton at this point? What more could he say that had not been said to him before? Should he even bother to scold him? He didn't have time to decide on anything before Trenton hit the ground hard.
They had missed one of the bandits and allowed him a chance to crawl up to them. The bandit tried to strike at Trenton viciously. "Get off of him!" Zane couldn't swing his blade and risk hitting Trenton but he could kick the bandit off of him. A solid boot to the head and the bandit rolled. Zane followed this up charging the bandit in hopes of ending it but the man caught Zane with his feet and rolling back he tossed the myrmidon.
Zane hit the ground hard and felt the air leave him as he tried to get back to his feet. The world spun for a moment and when everything aligned an axe was coming down for him. He barely managed to defend himself but the strike was jarring and he staggered back.
"You brats are going to regret coming here!" The bandit spat and grinned wickedly. Giving his axe a twirl he glanced at Trenton to make sure he wasn't going to try anything.

As soon as Zane kicked the man off Trenton, he scrambled out of the way, slipping on the mud and his own blood. He made it to his feet and faced the man in time to see him twirl an axe with a malicious smirk. Various shades of panic fought to take priority in Trenton’s mind. The deep slashes on his arms demanded his attention, and the tome lying on the ground a way off cried for him, but the man with the giant axe facing his only friend won his attention.
His vision tunneled in on Zane and the bandit, and the only sound he could hear was his own heart pounding in his head. He was far out of his league. “What was I thinking?” he thought desperately. If Zane got hurt, it would be his fault.
The axe man twitched a muscle to move, and Trenton’s own muscles reacted in kind. He rushed forward with a mad man’s battle cry and body slammed the bandit. His skinny and short frame collided with solid muscle. On a normal occasion, he would have done more damage to himself than the bandit, but in this instant, he took the man off guard, causing him to turn slightly from Zane and loosen his grip.
Trenton didn’t stop after crashing into the man. He instead kicked and clawed at the man, looking like a child playfighting with an adult. In an instant, a fist collided with his head and he slammed into the ground, which he was becoming well acquainted with.

As the bandit slammed Trenton into the ground he let out a primal roar to help psych himself up. It wasn't everyday he got to let out his aggression on weak opponents and this boy was as dumb and easy to beat as they came. He realized he was actually enjoying himself each time he beat down Trenton. The swordsman might be more of an issue but as soon as he was dead he could have more fun. "Ptoo!" The bandit spat on Trenton before stomping on his torso and grinding his heel. "You're a little s*** ain't ya?" The bandit laughed wickedly.
"Leave him alone!" Zane shouted and took a combative stance. He leaned forward so he could be ready to strike if the bandit decided to go for the killing blow on Trenton. Zane's hands trembled and the blade visibly shook and rattled.
"Or what? Ye gonna piss yerself? Yer too scared to kill me BOY!" The bandit removed his foot from Trenton and kicked him aside. He didn't expect the pupil to get up anytime soon. "A swordsman who won't give it his all, and a mage who doesn't even cast spells! Can there be a sadder duo? Eheheheheh!"
"Just you and your right hand," Zane quipped. The bandit seemed to try and puzzle out his words a moment but Zane used that as his moment to rush. "Don't look down on us!" An overhead strike from Zane was easily blocked as the bandit tried to hook his blade and pull it to the side. Zane spun on his back leg and put distance between them again. "Trenton! I need you to get up!"
The bandit wasn't about to let Zane fall back unchallenged and pursued. The bandit's strikes were fierce and full of power. Zane thought he should wear himself out quickly but he showed no signs of slowing. "Stand still and let. me. hit. YOU!" Suddenly Zane's evasive maneuvers betrayed him. His heel hit a rock throwing him off balance. As Zane stumbled the bandit came baring his axe down.
Zane's eyes widened in fear. How could he dodge him now? He couldn't. In an attempt to avoid a lethal strike Zane kicked the ground desperate to dodge the bandit, but he failed to evade him. The axe caught the myrmidon in his right shoulder, skimming him but managing to take a chunk of flesh with it. "Gaaaaahhh!" It hurt and Zane fell to the ground grabbing at his profusely bleeding shoulder. He wanted to run, but if he did he would be abandoning Trenton!

The world was losing focus as Trenton seemed to sink deeper into the mud. He has reached is limit, and an ache in his ribs turned into a bite with every inhale. He wondered in passing if they were bruised or cracked.
He watched helplessly as the towering bandit who now faced off with Zane, and he knew he had made a mistake. As desperately as he wanted to be one of the mercenaries, this world wasn’t for him. He would never be strong enough, skilled enough, or smart enough to belong.
Trenton had resigned himself to remaining on the ground; Zane could handle himself, but once the bandit drew blood, a bolt of anger shot through Trenton’s chest. He fought to move his sluggish limbs but barely manage to prop himself up. He was too beaten down to fight, and he only had one shot of magic left in him. That is when he was struck with inspiration.
The ground wasn’t good for much in a fight, but it did offer a unique perspective. Now that the bandit had his back to Trenton, having written him off as a player in this fight, a surprise attack was his only opportunity, and he had to make it count.
Trenton quickly scanned bandit, looking for any vulnerability. He didn’t have time to think because the bandit moved in a way that appeared to be another strike. Mustering what was left of his energy, Trenton shouted his spell.
He watched as the stream of light shot toward its target, the bandit’s crotch, taking his energy and consciousness with it. He didn’t see if his attack worked before his blacked out in the mud.

The bandit knew he needed to kill the two children off and help the rest of his group but he really was enjoying this rare opportunity to relish in the pain of others. With a twirl of his axe he moved again ready this time to decisively kill Zane when suddenly a crackle rippled in the air. The other one wasn't down?! The bandit turned too late and only made Trenton's attack more effective.
It was as though the world stood entirely still. The bandit dropped his axe and went deathly still as a cry of pain escaped his lips, only no sound came from him. Zane pitied the man and thanked whatever gods there were that he was not the one on the receiving end. Zane realized his opening could not go ignored and rushed the still screaming bandit and wracked his blade across the man's face. The bandit fell, far too weak to fight them but still alive in a piteous state.
The blood pouring down Zane's arm made his grip sickeningly slick over his blade. Standing over Trenton Zane groaned as the adrenaline began to fade and the real pain set in. "You owe me Trenton! And this is the least you can do!" Zane cut one of Trenton's sleeves off of his shirt and used it to hastily bandage himself. Now it was time for the fun part. Pulling Trenton out of the mud Zane was glad he was light.
Over his shoulders Zane carried Trenton. With every step the boy's frame bore into his shoulder painfully but the myrmidon gritted his teeth and hissed the pain away. Thankfully their escape had no further excitement and Zane was free to carry Trenton to the rendezvous and properly tend to his shoulder.

Trenton was immersed into a giant pot doing his best to scrub the burned food off the bottom. His head was pounding, and if he moved wrong, he’d get a stabbing pain in his ribs, but those were fortunately his only souvenirs from the mission he infiltrated.
He had woken up in his bed, the successful mission long over, and his mother had immediately put him to work with as few words as possible. He was sure his punishment was building interest as the day passed. He sat back and inspected the pot. Its cleanliness met his standards, so he rolled it right side up and plopped onto the ground for a breather.
He had asked about Zane, but his mother didn’t answer him before shoving him out the door. He supposed as soon as he was done with his chores, he would hunt his friend down and ensure that he was okay. His mind drifted to his tome as he wondered if he could learn healing spells.
“Trenton.” His mother’s voice had him on his feet in an instant.
“Yes, ma’am?” he asked as he spun to face her.
“I’ve had a word with Eric about your little…stunt you pulled by joining the mission,” she said coldly. Trenton could feel his heart drop to his toes. Here it was. It was time for his punishment.
“You will be given extra duties, and you will be flogged for endangering the mission as well as our men,” before Trenton could fall to despair, Melissa continued, “However, because you proved yourself not entirely useless, I will not burn your book into tonight’s fire, and you are permitted to train with Zane if he finds the time to do so.”
A wide smiled crossed Trenton’s face. “Thank-“ but before he could continue, Melissa cut him off harshly. “If you EVER pull such a stunt again, I will hang you myself. Understood?”
Trenton gulped as he nodded. He didn’t dare question the authenticity of her words.
Melissa looked at the recently clean dishes before her and waved a hand. “You are dismissed until dinner. You can find Zane at the training grounds.”
Trenton nodded excitedly and sprinted off before his mother could change her mind.

Zane was taking a break from his isolated training. With the chunk that was taken out of his shoulder bandaged he was ordered to keep it in a sling too to help him avoid moving it too much and risk bleeding. Training with his left hand was difficult and awkward but he didn't want to let the others know he was having difficulty adapting, so he trained alone.
He was sitting on a moss covered rock taking a drink when he noticed the excited Trenton rushing toward him. Quickly putting his drink down he held out a hand to tell him to stop and stay silent. "First thing's first. Back at the village you took out three bandits and helped to save my life. Second, the ONLY reason you are here right now is because of that story, so you better start fooling yourself into believing you did just that or its coming back down on me too. Third, because of this story my dad has decided you are qualified enough to join us on more missions going forward, and last but certainly most important of all. You and I are going to train until you cry and beg me to end your life mercifully until you can live up to the new expectations that are going to be placed on you."
He then inhaled after saying everything at a quick pace and in a single breath. "So... yeah, that's it. I don't know much about magic but I'd assume if your body was stronger you wouldn't be so prone to fainting again." He then looked at his missing sleeve. "And you should get a new shirt." He grinned.
