Name: Abelard the Mighty Abelard the Just Abelard the Brave Abelard
Class: Cavalier
Age: 23
Born in: Araphen
Appearance: A courageous man with a strong build and tall figure, he stands at around 6'2" and is quite sturdy due to training almost constantly on his horse. His strong build means that he constantly rushes into fights, striving to be victorious and claim glory, and also win the day for all of the good in the world. Abelard has thick brown eyebrows and wavy dark brown hair that is slicked backwards, alongside gaudy yellow armour that is reminiscent of something a royal knight would wear in some old fairy tale. The cavalier is strictly dedicated to maintaining his appearance, constantly polishing his armour and brushing his hair to fit the general depiction of a "Prince Charming" kind of knight, although whether his looks are actually "charming" is very dubious, to say the least. He nearly constantly has a smug smile of determination on his face, which makes him appear highly overconfident, but dedicated to serving a cause nonetheless. Miraculously, despite his reckless temperament and desire to get into the thick of battle, the man lacks any scars or serious wounds and somehow gets out of most conflicts unscathed, even if he is brutally defeated. Unfortunately, this only serves to stoke his delusions of being a virtuous knight of legend.
Personality: To say that he was headstrong and overconfident would be a severe understatement. With a constant booming - almost shouting - heroic voice, Abelard has delusions of grandeur to an extreme, believing himself to be a powerful knight of legend that will cleanse the world of darkness, and ensure that no man or woman shall ever suffer under the persecution of evil. Having obsessed over tales of old heroes as a child due to his determination to be a strong Araphenian cavalier, he believes that the role he must play in life is to be that of a valiant warrior, saving women from the clutches of evil madmen and liberating villages and cities from the clutches of corruption. Unfortunately, due to his strong sense of duty to fill this role, it often spells danger and breeds huge misunderstandings, as it causes him to seek out and fight evil that more than likely isn't even there, just so that he can once again "save the day" or "protect a fair maiden". However, he is not overly brutal in his methods of crushing evil, and is actually quite merciful, being willing to spare his enemies as long as they pledge to protecting all that is good in the world. Furthermore, he is always eager to test his mettle and will regularly challenge men he sees as strong or powerful, so that he can prove himself to be a talented warrior... but in reality, this rarely happens, as his reckless nature often means that duels end in losses for him, as he is far too eager to be victorious and lacks much strategy or planning during combat, instead following the tried and true Araphenian method of overwhelming the enemy through sheer numbers and brute force.
Due to all of this, Abelard is often a danger to himself and his surroundings, but to call him "evil" or "stupid" would be a dreadful distortion of his character. Underneath his overconfidence and desire to be a legendary hero, the man has a heart of gold and is always willing to help those in need, no matter the danger to himself. His characterisation of himself as a fantastical hero is in no way purely ostentatious, as he is always ready to back up his claim by assisting others under any conditions, even if he has no other reason to. He may be misguided in his approach to being a cavalier, but he truly has the heart full of justice that many seem to lack in current times, and is ready to provide relief to his surroundings through any task; no matter how big or too small, no matter how perilous or how unrewarding.
History: Abelard's origins are surprisingly uninteresting when compared to his overbearing character, as he was born to an Araphenian merchant and his wife, and not some powerful general of his country. Ever since he was a boy, the golden cavalier had had a fascination with the depiction of cavaliers as harbingers of justice, and the notion of such a thing was further fuelled by his surroundings; coming from a country known for its powerful cavalry units formed vast patriotic pride in the young boy. His father had planned for the boy to take over his business as a merchant, but Abelard had a vastly different future in mind - he would be the greatest cavalier that Elibe had ever seen! None would suffer as long as he offered his protection, as he was the embodiment of justice and heroism! ...His father had no interest in these grand dreams, and trained the young Abelard under his craft despite his protests.
By the age of ten, it became clear to his father that Abelard could never cope as a merchant due to his energy and dreams of fighting evil, so he relented on forcing the boy into his craft and instead focused on training Abelard's younger sister in his place. Being quite wealthy, Abelard's father found himself being constantly pestered by his son into getting him riding lessons so that he could pursue his dream of knighthood, and eventually gave in, just to get some time away from the constant energy that the boy seemed to exert upon others. By the time of Hargus's invasion and the Bernese War of Aggression, Abelard had become quite an adapt rider, alongside his first horse that he named "Marvel". Seeing his country and Elibe in a state of peril from the attacks of Bern and bandits, Abelard beseeched his father to allow him to go out and fight alongside his fellow countrymen, however his parents knew the peril that the would be faced with and forbade him from doing any such thing.
Angered by his parent's refusal to allow him to serve his country, Abelard had initially planned to flee his home and enlist, but these plans were eventually disregarded due to the words of his younger sister. His sister told him that being a virtuous knight meant that Abelard would have to protect his family and especially her, which made complete sense in his mind, and successfully convinced him into staying alongside his family until tensions cooled. After all, what kind of knight would he be if he refused to protect a defenseless maiden such as his very own sister?
Araphen took a considerable amount of damage during the wars, and his failure to serve his country still stung Abelard, despite the fact that he failed to do so because he was honour bound to protect his family. After the defeat of Bern, Abelard finally saw his opportunity to go out and purge the world of darkness, and save numerous fair maidens along the way; he finally saw his destiny laid out in front of him, and gripping the reigns of his second steed, "Valant", he charged boldly into the future that awaited him.
