"No, it's alright. Most people don't think of how the world works to a blind man." Ralph replaced the blindfold gingerly. "Do you not recall, Sir Rayl? That day at the bakery, brigands came in. We fought them together. I can fight just as well as when I could see. Footsteps, breath, heartbeat, these all are telltale signs of my opponents. Smells too: sweat, iron, blood, it's all in how you perceive your enemy. Humans are blessed with five senses. Lose one and yet we still live on."

A smile on his face as the paladin shook his head," Again you must pardon my memory: I've slain far too many bandits, brigands, pirates, and other such villians to accurately recall every single incident...though I am not about to deny your skills, but still...I pray you will stay the night here in safety, if at least just to put a worried man's fears to rest before he heads off on another mission." he put a hand to his side, before frowning: for a man who switched his guard duty with someone else, he wasn't actually carrying any of his weapons, they were all up in...
...the captain's quarters...maybe if he was quiet enough he could sneak in, get his stuff, and get out without awakening Karina...of course he was no expert infiltrator...oh well, it could wait: he may as well get some equipment for the trip from the Quartermaster: he was due for some diversity in his weaponry.
Wait a minute- "If we really did fight at each other's sides, tell me: how is a baker like yourself so adept at combat?" this was kind of ironic, considering his baking roots before joining the cavalier training camp, but that thought faded rather quickly.

"Yes, I will stay here if you wish me too so badly. Bill isn't one to worry when I'm gone for awhile." Ralph thought about his answer to Rayl's question for a minute, "Yes, well, in my youth I was a pickpocket. Also, there was a man I met who I looked up to a lot, I even said to myself, 'I want to be just like him.' You know, every child has a dream. Mine was to be just like this man, a warrior. So I train everyday, even when I had gone blind. Thinking, maybe I could meet him again someday, and thank him for giving my life a purpose. Yes, his name was Matis, I believe."
Ralph noticed that he had gone a bit off topic, "Ah, sorry about that. Anyways, I was a fighter long before I was a baker, but now fighting seems to be something I just happen to do in my free time. What I wouldn't give to relive those days of adventuring, definitely the highlight of my life."

"No no, that's quite alright: I find myself drifting from the conversation as well. We have quite a bit in common Ralph, only in a reverse: I was a baker long before I was a fighter and Matis-" there was a name had had not heard in a long time," Wait, you speak of Sir Matis of Sacae, yes? I had the pleasure of fighting at his side five years prior during the Bandit War. Afterwards I helped him and his friend rebuilt some town deep into the plains...he's a good man, we'll have to visit him one day..."
a thought came to him, one he half expected for some reason," Well Ralph, I'll make you a deal: if I send a soldier to accompany you back to your village in haste in this night, you tell your friend Bill that Sir Rayl needs your help in a mission. It will be potentially dangerous as we head into the heart of Bern...I'm sure you know of the Chaos within the former nation, yes?"

"Ah, you know Matis as well? My time in the Bandit War was limited, I was just a young boy, you see. Perhaps we could visit him."
Then Rayl told him something unexpected, a mission into Bern. "My homeland... I've only heard what the gossip brings to our bakery. Of course I'll help, my country is in need. Don't worry about the escort, I'll send a message to Bill when it's light. I did mention Caecus, didn't I? He's an eagle, and my eyes. I'll just send him out tomorrow."
For once, Ralph was glad that he had never stopped his training, as he had thought about often. A chance to relive his life's dream that he thought had vanished along with his sight. He was already as eager as he had been as a boy.

Rayl smiled and gave Ralph a pat on the shoulder," As was I, at least mentally, but we've grown quite a ways since then. You should get some rest my good man, we will be leaving soon after first light to get as much distance through the mountains as we possibly can. If you will excuse me, I have to fetch my equipment." with this, he made his way past Ralph and the soldiers who were still crowded nearby, as the paladin told one of the soldiers to lead the blind swordsman to a room, as he made his way up the first flight of stairs, pausing at the doorway: he was going to have to be absolutely silent for this.
Pressing lightly on the door, with it giving the slightest creak as it swung open at the speed of turtle in running syrup, as he crept through the room, pausing briefly to look to the sleeping maiden, smiling lightly as he stepped forwar- and tripped on the rug and tumbled into his armor which was piled in the corner. Stealth wasn't his forte.Rolling over in his heap of metal to look up the frame of Karina, only praying she wouldn't wake u- oh who was he kidding.

Karina awoke to a sudden din. grabbing a dagger she had placed on her bedside table, she yelled to the night, "who goes there? Please note that I'm armed!" She fumbled with a candle, but got it to light after a few seconds, filling the room with dim light. "Sir Rayl? Is that you?" she asked the heap of man on the floor.

Sticking a hand outside of the pile to give a brief wave, the sight must have been comical to behold as he slowly pulled himself out of the small metallic heap," Ahem: what's left of him, yes. Sorry to interrupt your sleep, I was just...ummm..." he paused, what was he here for? Oh right. turned back to the pile, he was about to grab his armor, but- he paused, this was an odd enough moment as is,"Errr- I think I'll just go..." with this he made for the door, but then tripped on the same corner of the rug, having been pushed up from the first fall.

Karina got out of bed and helped Rayl up. "There no need to rush, my lord. You said you needed something?" she asked. She looked around the room, spotting Rayl's armor. "I hadn't noticed that you had your armor in here before... You could have just knocked. Please, let me help you with it." she offered as she grabbed hold of Rayl's helm. I wonder why he didn't just knock. I mean, its not like I'd bite or anything. Does he think I am mean? I hope not... Karina frowned for a moment, but cleared her head of negative thoughts. "Where do you need to bring these?" she asked.

After being helped up, Rayl smiled faintly in the dark, before taking a step forward, and wincing: all this falling about must have sprained his right leg or something. It stung like an arrow or two, but the extent of the injury was hopefully nothing that would hinder his riding...not that he really needed to control Elibe, it was just the moving over terrain...again with the critical thinking.
Luckily in the dark this wasn't too hard to see, hopefully, as he leaned against the wall," It- it can wait. Just go back to sleep Karina, sorry to just drop in unannounced thoug-" he paused, and in the faint light looked at her sleepware, and a smile crept onto his face at the irony," Don't people usually where less when they sleep?" he shook his head before moving along the wall for the door, then stumbled and fell into the door.
He was terrible at hiding injuries...he was just terrible at hiding anything period.

Karina started to blush at Rayl's comment, but all color drained from her face when he fell. "Sir Rayl! Are you ok? I... I'll send for a healer, they've got to have one in here." she said. She bent down and put his arm over her shoulder. "I'm going to move you over to the bed, try not to struggle too much" Karina said. She slowly dragged Rayl over to the bed. Even though it was close, she had to take her time in order to not upset his leg. "This is bad... Will you be alright while I send for help?"

Feeling his arm being moved, Rayl didn't put any resistance, and let himself be dragged over to the bed, though upon getting close to it, he helped her help him up and onto the bed, but the moment she even mentioned healers and help, his eyes widened in panic: sheer terror even. Jumped up suddenly, ignoring the sharp jolt of pain, he grabbed her hand firmly and spoke frantically," No no no! No healers, No help! I'll be fine- just fine! Just need to rest a bit. Please...Karina..." It must have been odd to see such an expression on such a usually calm man, whose short burst of panic turned into silent pleading.
Never again...healers...even the sight of a healing staff caused him grief...the chance of that healer being Alcibie. No- No chances. He was ready to pin Karina to the floor if necessary. No healers...

Karina's face hardened, and her eyebrows almost formed a V as she said, "what are you talking about, no healers? You might have sprained, maybe even broken, your ankle! I know you think you will still be able to ride and fight, but trying to be all strong and manly all the time, so much that you will ignore a debilitating injury, is just dumb. this could mess up your leg forever if you don't set it right!" As she berated him, she saw something in his eyes, a far off, almost longing remembrance. Maybe he was beaten as a cleric as a child, or something like that... Whatever it is, he seems to have some kind or irrational fear or angst of them Am I being to harsh on him? she thought. She mulled it over for a few moments, and softened her expression.
"Alright... If you really don't want to see a healer, at least let me make a splint for your ankle." she looked around the room, locating a scarf from her bag. "I'll run over to the storeroom and find a board. Just stay here," Karina flashed Rayl a reassuring smile as she headed for the door.

Rayl let out an obviously heard sigh of relief as her sharp tone changed and he let go of her hand before laying down," Alright, but remember: no healers...and that's an order." that last part was said with a forced smile, not like he COULD enforce it without chasing after her, which wasn't really an option. As she made for the door, he looked over to his right to reach down for his own scarf, which he had left lightly on a nearby dresser, and began to tie it around his neck. It was old, tattered, and it was debatable if it was original red...or that shade of red, but nonetheless it was something he wasn't about to let go. Laying his head back against the pillow and looking up at the ceiling, he couldn't help but frown, and only hope they didn't run into any trouble along the way in or out.

Karina was lead to the store room by a very helpful guard with somewhat of a wandering eye. She bowed to him as he told her which door to open, and made sure he had left before going in. No one should know that the great Rayl had tripped over he own armor and hurt himself...
It took a few minutes, but after rooting around false swords and spare armor, Karina found a board that would suffice for the task at hand. She made her way back to the captains quarters, making sure to avoid any guards that might ask questions.
Karina entered the room with a smile and asked Rayl if he felt any better. Then she asked him to take his pants off. "I'm sorry, but I'll need to get this on your bare leg..." she said, blushing. She stood there awkwardly, holding a board in one hand and a scarf in the other, waiting for his reply.
