OoC: My bad. It looks like a cloak on his battle sprite.
Tirion sheathed Harflgar and scratched his bearded chin while placing his purse back in it's resting place. He considered the young man's proposition. Hefting, Aez back into a proper position, he responded.
"Well, if yer curious, I sympathize with yer plight, whatever it may be. Back in me home city, tha war has driven many people ta either join tha militia or steal fer a livin'. As fer that favor..." Tirion looked the young man up and down. He seemed like he could be capable, but he wasn't sure as to how capable he really was. Or how loyal he would be, given the fact that he did just try to take Tirion's money. However, he wasn't in a situation to refuse willing soldiers, "Well I could use yer help with a little dilemma o' mine. Though I must warn ye. T'ain't no mission fer tha faint o' heart. We may not make it back."

Tim raised an eyebrow as a man wearing a red scarf walked straight into Tirion. That was rude, just staggereing into someone so directly, perhaps he was a drunken lout. At least he'd have half a decent excuse for acting so inconsiderately.
Tim was further puzzled when Tirion opened his mouth to say something, but stopped and fized his gaze fixed on the rude man. Tim almost stumbled back as Tirion drew his blade with a single hand. Impressive, managing the weight of his heavy father and that of a blade, a custom one it seemed. Wait, no it wasn't impressive, it was madness. Sextimus was about to speak up when Tirion pulled a purse of money from his tunic. Now why would he take out his wallet.....? O, Tim had a dumb look on his face as realized what was going on. The man was attempting to rob the savage. Clearly a poor move.
He continued to watch the exchange, not offering his input, but nonetheless confused by Tirion's generosity. The man had tried to rob him and now Tirion was willing to toss him a few coins. Were Tim in such a position... well he probably would have been robbed and not even realized it. But if he had caught the thief, he'd at least slap him around a bit. Guess Tirion admired courage. It was probably one of his reasons for allowing a random passerby like himself to join his dangerous quest.
For some time Tim stayed silent, assuming Tirion had the situation well under control, but when he offered to allow the thief to join them, Tim began to doubt. "Tirion, are you sure this is a wise decision?" He asked, making his way to the drunken Aez. He once upon tried to support the large man's wait. "Perhaps I do not understand just how heavy the gravity of our situation is, but is it truly wise to allow such an untrustworthy character to join your force?" He asked with an inch of conviction in his voice. As much as Sextimus wanted to be able to trust the people he would be working with, he didn't really have a right to question Tirion's right to hire the man. Tim had his own major failing after all, he'd never taken a life.
"On second thought, Nevermind." Tim stated with a quiver in his voice. Tim allowed an uneasy, almost shameful look to manifest on his face. He felt quite unjust for criticizing his very generous employer's actions.

((I am going to assume that after the support Elias is feeling much better for being a little girl and talking feelings with Garnet. Garnet probably said something really supportive too.))
Now that Elias was starting to feel better, closer to his usual self, he slid out of the inn. He had things he needed to do before they left if they wanted a good chance. Everyone in this group was so physically oriented, no mages whatsoever. Madness one may say, that one being Elias so he will say it. "Madness!" Well unless they decided to hire some other random schmuck who just so happened shared the ability to manipulate reality and burn all in a glorious hellfire that Elias had.
Then again, if they didn't that just made Elias MORE important! That's nice. "Hrm... " He muttered, looking around. For a sacaen place, this was very lively and vibrant. It was called Bull something or another, poor bull having body parts stolen from it, this place was a menace of the highest quality. It was probably responsible for all the crime and chaos and corruption in the entire Elibe. All of it. City of heroes? More like CITY OF VILLAINS! Seriously, he should tell Big Red to watch his purse later, someone's gonna try to steal it. Probably someone dumb, since only a stupid idiot goes to crime and only a stupider idioter person tries to steal from someone who's neck is THAT THICK.
Oh yeah, stuff to do that's right. Hrm... where oh where could it be... Ahah! The land of learning has finally been spotted! "Hiding from me? You fiend." He announced aloud, a few people gave him suspect looks, but for the most part everyone ignored him. Typical. He'd make them notice him one day, count on it. To the bookstore aw-

"Young man, you in the red. Over here." Well, it can wait for a moment while Elias talked to this nice man over here. He was standing at a stall, wooden with a collection of random wares assorted around. He his self was a perfectly trustworthy looking man with long greasy black hair falling down in snakes and an ominous shadow covering the majority of his body. A long hooked nose that you'd think you'd only see in fairy tails and had no place in reality, but of course there it was.
"What is it citizen?" Elias said aloud, his voice full of pomp and vigor.

((Technically it is, but I was too lazy to make it look like a scarf when I made it.))
Zeran listened to Tirion's explaination, feeling much more at ease with the blade put away, and cocked his head to one side with the raising of an eyebrow. A plight, eh... Zeran hadn't really been thrown into theiving for something as simple and rational as that. He was more of a kleptomaniac than anything else, and it just turned out to be handy when he ran low on coin or needed a way to help the people out or to get revenge for himself. His head straightening and his gaze returning to normal, Zeran continued to listen, the 'dilemma' not scaring him much. He had survived everything thrown at him thus far, so the prospect didn't really scare him. Plus, such an adventure was bound to be better than just travelling who-knows-where for simple tasks. Openning his mouth to speak, Zeran began with a "Sounds like a pl-", only to be interrupted by the man 'Sextimus'. I still think that's a weird name.
Now looking towards the gray-haired man, though not looking that old, he listened to his brief explaination on thoughts of Zeran joining on this little adventure, especially the part about calling him 'untrustworthy.' Frowning at this, Zeran wondered what he could do to resolve this. His hand rose to his chin, Zeran's eyes closing as he pondered this, not even paying heed to Sextimus disregarding his original remarks. Openning one eye, he then looked up at Tirion, thinking of something. "You probebly have other men with you for this journey too, right? If so, its probebly for the best that we come up with some way to convince both them and anyone I will work with in this alliance that I am trustworthy." Closing the eye again, Zeran started to pace, unsure of how to approach this dilemma. How would he convince others that he was trustworthy, particularly since everyone would know that he was a thief, a scoundrel, a cheat... Okay, the second two not so much, but thieves are often portrayed as such.

Garnet hadn't really wandered very far from the inn. He'd just felt like stretching his legs a bit, and perhaps window shopping at one of the local armor stalls. He'd made sure he had enough stores of dried foods and biscuits, and other travel rations to last for a time, but he probably wouldn't be affording anything else for a while. Not if he wanted to keep a bit of gold to fall back on in times of trouble....
Wait a minute. I've got a job coming up.... I should get myself over to the armory and get better equipped.
Besides, if he didn't get himself better protected, he wasn't likely to make it through the mission. With this in mind, the decision between saving money, and spending it became far easier, and he headed down the road to one of the local armories....
Things were not going to be as easy as it had originally seemed, Garnet realized, as he stepped out of the third shop. He just couldn't seem to find any proper armor here in Sacae! What's with all the leather shirts and jerkins!? That wouldn't be nearly stiff enough.
He was almost ready to give up when he saw someplace more promising. It could be just another wild goose chase, but no!- There was a glint of colored steel on the stall outside the shop. He strode over, and raised his hand to stroke his beard as he inspected the armor pieces. They weren't of the same design as his Etrurian armor had been, but they were similar. A breastplate, which would cover the chest, while leaving the waist open, able to move. To someone who relied directly on their armor, that was a fatal weakness, but to the guardsman turned merc, it allowed him to stay mobile enough to move much faster than a heavy plated fighter. As fast as the crooks he'd had to run down, or that was the idea. Next to the chest pieces, on the work bench, was a single steel pauldron. Its design was minimalist, covering only the shoulder, but it looked sturdy enough to deflect just about any sword blow, presuming the red headed swordsman was doing his job to stay out of the way of repeated attacks.
"Admiring my work, Swordsman?" The voice came from an older man standing at the entrance. He had well muscled arms, a heavy beard, and wings of grey in his hair. It wasn't hard to imagine him at the forge which he apparently owned.
"Yes Sir...." Garnet drawled. "It's the only armor I've seen today that I'm even interested in. All the others had too much leather, and not enough steel for my taste."
"Nah.... They don't make proper armor out on the plains. Too much cloth. Too flimsy." The smith turned a critical eye on his mercenary customer, before turning to enter his shop, and waving Garnet inside with him.
"You're here to buy, right? Let's get you fitted out."
Garnet wasn't really sure he had the money for everything the armor smith would try to sell him, but that would be the smith's problem. Not his. Stepping inside, the merc caught glances of various gauntlets, chest pieces, and even a square shield which was quite eye catching to the swordsman. There wasn't a great deal of merchandise around though.
Garnet turned back to the smith just in time to catch one of the chest pieces, as it was tossed to him. He didn't even fumble with it... well... maybe just a little. Who was this old man to be throwing armor at him though.
"I thought that one would go with that red head of yours. Strap it on, Son, and I'll dig some other bits out."
Garnet gave the man an irked stare, more for having armor chucked at him than anything else before looking down at what he held in his hands. He rotated the breastplate to be better visible in the darkness of the shop, and began to make out golden trim across the front of a deep red paint job.
Red.... Why am I not surprised..... Garnet didn't mind. In fact, he approved. He'd always worn red armor, even back in his guard days. Now, though he wasn't a guard anymore, he wanted to feel like he was carrying on the tradition.... He wasn't a guard anymore. He was going to be a hero.
By the time he got the plate buckled on, the older man had dug out an almost-matching pauldron from the hidden recesses of a cabinet, and dragged out a heavy duster jacket from somewhere else.
"The coat will have to do. I don't have the rest of the set of the armor you're buying, and I won't make any more. This old dog is heading home. Once I sell enough of my wares, I'll pack up and leave with the rest""
The mercenary listened to the old man's story, vaguely intrigued that he was moving out, but more interested in the gear which the smith had pulled out.
"This coat.... Won't it be useless against sharpened blades? even get in the way?"
"Aye, it may get in the way, but it's cut from a sturdy leather. It should prevent most cuts from getting through. You'll have to decide whether you like it for yourself, but I'd suggest using it, unless you have some other armor pieces which I haven't provided."
"...No." The red-headed swordsman had been getting by without any kind of protection for a bit, but he thought he'd had enough of that for quite a while.
Satisfied with the armor pieces and leather duster, Garnet had set to haggling, and soon found that he, in fact, did not possess the coin to purchase the items. Undaunted with the lesser amount he would be getting the smith said he'd take what the mercenary could spare, and call it even.
"Really, I just want to get out of Sacae,... so while I'm in such a giving mood, is there anything else you'd be interesting in taking off my hands? Preferably something large, and hard to store...."
This really was a lucky break. Finding a smith so desperate to leave that he was practically giving his things away.... It made the mercenary feel a bit guilty, but he was ready to make use of the situation.
"Well Sir Smith.... That shield on the wall." It was a good sized square shield, large enough to hide most of his torso behind. It was colored a deep red with a black circle centered in the square. He couldn't help but laugh and be relieved that it wasn't painted like a target.
"Take it. Few enough people here buy those sorts of shields anyway."
When Garnet left the shop to head back to the inn for the evening, was laden with far more gear than before, and a far lighter money purse. Such was the nature of his profession. Still, the extra weight felt just right on him. It reminded him of his old job, and the fulfillment he'd gotten working at that. Perhaps he'd feel something similar to that again.

Tirion placed a hand on Seximus' shoulder to reassure him of his thought process. His past experience with thieves had been varied, but he had never met one who was truly inhuman. In fact, his best friend, in their first meeting, attempted to take Tirion's militia-issued sword from him and sell it. Not Harflgar. That blade was actually made by the very man who, decades ago, stole his weapon from him. Tirion chuckled a bit. He thought about how odd it is that you can be chasing down a boy trying to get your brand new sword back on the day you joined the armed forces and then a few years later be fighting back to back with the very same person as comrades and friends.
"Don't worry, Sextimus. I know what I'm doin'. As for ye..." Tirion looked at the thief, scratching his beard in contemplation, "I don't know if'n there is anythin' ta convince. See, I don't trust ye any more than I can throw ye. Which I wager would be quite far. I suppose that wasn't a good phrase ta use. Anyway, ye could slit me throat in camp tonight and make off with me things. Anyone I recruit today could. I take it upon meself, however, ta be responsible for what may happen." the swordsman grasped his father once again and turned towards the register.
"Besides! Where's tha fun in playin' it safe?" Tirion let out a loud bought of hearty laughter as he approached the counter.

Tim shot a bewildered look at the thief. He hadn't expected him to jump on the opportunity to prove his loyalty, especially after Tim had retracted his statement. Still, his reply sounded as if he had almost anticipated Tim's reaction. No, that was silly, Tim was overthinking it.
Tim's thoughts fell apart when he felt the heavy hand of Tirion fall upon his back. He met Tirion's gaze and gave him a thankful smile. Yes, Tim had fine reason to mistrust the thief, he was being cautious. No need to second guess himself.
A light chuckle escaped his mouth when Tirion pointed out the lack of fun in "playing it safe." The man was truly insane. He hired a group of strangers in hopes of reclaiming his home, and yet he had no concern that one of them could, at any moment, stick something sharp in his back and then proceed to rob his corpse of his former possessions. It was mad, it was foolish. And yet, Tim took a liking to it. Perhaps it was what he was looking for, the power to live life fearlessly and without regret. An appealing dream, but Tim had a long, long way to go before he ever reached such a goal.
After Tirion's laughter died down, Tim turned his vision to the pickpocket. "Well, it looks like you're on board." He held out an open hand, expecting the thief to shake. "Name's Sextimus, try to keep any weapons you might have away from my kidneys." He said, in an attempt to make a joke. He did it fairly poorly though, as there was a notable grimace on his face and he spoke with a very dry voice.

OOC: First and foremost, I'll have to thank Tirion for inviting me to "join" this thread, so to speak. Also, this post takes place about a week after Reylan first crossed the border into Sacae.
IC:
A week had passed since Reylan first entered Sacae. To his surprise, it wasn't much different from Lycia, yet the descriptions of the area portrayed in the storied his father told seemed to be true. Reylan had found only a few modest villages during his eastward trek, only visiting them to retrieve food and water.
His journey, at present time, had now led him to a bustling town, presumably near the center of Sacae, as estimated by Reylan. His miniscule amount of provisions were dwindling now, and it was evident that he needed to restock.
Reylan was now currently trotting quietly on a semi-crowded street, his weary eyes attempting to scout out a potential resting spot. After a few moments of searching, he managed to locate a tavern to his right. Halting his horse, Reylan dismounted, then briefly searched his pocket for change. He counted 190 gold coins, which was enough to buy him a meal, at least for now.
As the young cavalier entered the tavern, he noticed that it was rather lively, with many groups of people congregating. Reylan immediately took the nearest seat he could find, gasping slightly. Seated nearby was an odd-looking group of people, evidently not civilians, as indicated by their audible conversation regarding weapons. One of the occupants of the nearby table had pale gray hair, with a callous yet somewhat witty expression eteched upon his face. Another man seated at the table had just stood up, and was currently approaching the counter. From what Reylan's eyes could process, he had long, braided ginger hair and matching facial hair. Finally, the table's last occupant was rather young, sporting jet black hair and outlandish clothing.
Reylan sighed deeply, occasionally observing their actions. He sank backward into his seat, his mind now juggling two fronts. He was doing quite a decent job at maintaining a low profile, but he was sure to be approached sooner or later. After all, he had neglected to remove his armor, which was now melded against his tunic in a powerful bond of sweat.

Tirion carefully removed his father from Sextimus' shoulders and made his way to the counter. He needed to get to shopping as soon as possible. It was possible that he would find more candidates for his band of bravos out in the market. The swordsman smirked as he heard the bad joke come from Sextimus. He had only known the man for a few moments, but he could tell that he wasn't necessarily the most confident man. It was good to hear him attempt a joke like that. Of course, he could have been a completely different person from what he was displaying at the time. Tirion really tried to not make assumptions about people before trying to get to know them, but it was difficult at times. Namely with people like Sextimus.
Tirion finally got around to paying for the meals and went to let Sextimus and Zeran know that he and Aez were leaving when he picked up the stench of congealed sweat on top of the sound of plates of armor shifting around. He knew the sound and the smell well. It reminded him of his years in the war. Sensory clues that pointed to a nearby warrior, they were. He looked in the direction they were coming from and saw a man about his age sitting at a table. He was a bit curious as to how he didn't notice such a man beforehand. Nevertheless, he stepped over to greet the soldierly looking person.
"Ae, there! Ye look like a right soldierly man. I hope I ain't intrudin', but I'm lookin' fer able men ta help me with somethin'." Tiroon adjusted the now completely knocked out Aez so he was better situated on his shoulders.

Reylan was suddenly stirred out of his half-comatose state by a rather gruff voice. The speaker was the braided man he had been observing a few moments prior. He had another man slumped over his back, unconsciously resting on his shoulders. The braided man spoke with a slight accent, one Reylan was unfamiliar with. Nevertheless, he was able to comprehend what the man was saying.
Slightly puzzled, Reylan adjusted his posture, his joints still sore from his trek, particularly the ones in his arms. He responded in a casual, yet slightly noble voice. "Yes, I'm a soldier, if that's what you're inquiring about. Cavalier, actually."
Reylan paused for a brief moment, then continued his response, dropping the volume of his voice slightly. "I don't know how I can be of any assistance to you, but I'm sure I could contribute some form of support. What seems to be your problem?"

Tirion's spirits lifted even higher than before. It was rare that a man would be willing to hear out a request from a random stranger. Especially in Bulgar of all places since the city was well known for housing con artists looking to relieve travelers of their belongings. Be the trade capital of Sacae, it attracted all kinds of unsavory tricksters. Thankfully, this man was among the more trusting sort.
"Well, this is difficult ta say. I'm lookin' fer men ta help me take back a city. Me an me da's -" Tirion craned his neck to motion at the man slung over his shoulder, "- home city o' Mullingard." Tirion sighed. He knew he would have to explain this story often, but he still disliked repeating himself so often in so little a span of time.
"Basically, a very bad man is had hsi eye on takin' control o' Mullingard fer a long time. Me an me da here were among the only ones ta keep him from doin' it. Now he's gotten rid of us both and I can be certain he's made his move by now." Tirion paused to think over his proposal. It really did seem like a tale you read in storybooks. But, as farfetched as it sounded, the whole thing was true.
"I've gathered a small force here in Bulgar already, but tha more the merrier. We could use a mounted knight like yerself. In fact, ye may be useful outside tha city fer the siege I have planned..." Tirion pondered how he could use a cavalier like this man. A horseman wouldn't be very useful in the narrow streets of Mullingard, but he would easily out-maneuver the soldiers outside the walls, even match the mounted units that Halford was bound to have. He could maybe even lead a group of the nomad horsemen they were to send to the walls.
"I'll tell ye more about me strategy later if ye want ta join us. I can pay ye, too, if we succeed. If we don't then we're dead, anyway. Me name is Tirion, by tha way."

Reylan listened intently to the man's story, his fatigued mind unnecessarily dwelling on his plight. When he finished, he introduced himself as Tirion. Reylan exhaled sharply, his eyes resting solemnly on Tirion. The older man slumped across his shoulders was apparently his father, as indicated during his statement. How he ended up like that was another mystery.
Reylan cleared his throat in preparation for his response. "Mullingard? I've never heard of such a place."
He intentionally left his response open-ended, reminiscing for a few moments about his daring rescue in Santaruz. During the ordeal, he was forced to stab his way through a few waves of inexperienced insurgents, albeit clumsily, as Reylan was new to warfare back then. That was nearly half a year ago, however.
Reylan was skeptical of believing Tirion's story, but a small figment of his imagination managed to compel him to think otherwise. He had no reason to aid this man, but it was not in Reylan's nature to deny such a request.
With a small grin, Reylan continued. "But that isn't important. I'd be glad to lend you my services, and don't worry about paying me. I have no need for gold."
It was true, in a sense. Reylan hadn't come to Sacae empty-handed. He wrapped up his response with a hint of determination in his speech. "You'll need to inform me about this strategy of yours. I too know a few things about warfare. I'm from Lycia, and back when I served in their army, I met a mage who was perhaps one of the best thinkers I've ever met. You could possibly say I learned a few things from him."
After uttering this statement, Reylan immediately thought of Balthier. He never returned from Etruria, unless I left before he...
Reylan sighed, almost chuckling to himself. He had explained a fragment of his past to Tirion, without even giving him his own name. "Oh, forgive me. I got so engaged in this conversation, I forgot to give you my name. How foolish of me. I'm Reylan, from Ostia."
It was odd, accepting a foreigner's help. Still, Reylan was somewhat eager to put his newfound battling skills to the test. He was much more composed on the battlefield, and his overall technique had improved by quite a lot.

"Ostia. I don't believe I've heard o' that place. O' course, I don't know much o' anythin' outside o' tha plains." Tirion thought for a second. There weren't a whole lot of places he really knew of. In fact, most of the Norric and even the Gaul really only knew their own cities and the outlying areas used for farming and the then postponed war, "Come ta think of it, I don't know much o' tha plains, either. Me da's tha one who knows his way 'round here. Anyway..."
Tirion shifted Aez once again. He stuck his arm out hoping to interlock with Reylan's arm in a shake.
"Welcome aboard um... whatever this group be called. I suppose I should give our band a name seein' as we have so many people now." Tirion said as he turned his head to the side thoughtfully.

Reylan shifted uncomfortably as Tirion spoke, then accepted the armshake loyally.
"It's just west of here," he responded. "But it doesn't mean much to me anymore."
He had uttered those words aloud without thinking, but it wasn't far from the truth. With no one left to depend on in Lycia, Reylan found himself more disillusioned than ever. He would have to accept Tirion's invitation for the time being.
Reylan stood up slowly, locking eyes with Tirion. With a much more dutiful tone in his voice, he spoke, his gaze following Tirion's.
"Thank you kindly. I should probably introduce myself to the other members of this band before we set off. I don't think they'd appreciate a stranger."
Reylan had said that last bit with a small chuckle, attempting to quell the raging storm of emotions inside his imagination.

Tirion was busy thinking up names for their group when Reylan suddenly stood to meet his gaze. It was unfortunate for the knight that Tirion was staring past him at a nearby wall, lost in thought. However, the swordsman was snapped from his thoughts when Reylan spoke with a soldierly tone. One the former soldier had not heard in years.
"Well, then! Y'ain't gonna make no good impressions smellin' like that, I tell ye now. Follow me ta the inn we're stayin' at. I gotta take this drunk ta our room and ye can use the bath there."
Tirion turned to Sextimus and Zeran.
"Are ye two comin' as well? If not, just remember we're ta meet back here by sundown."
