If you're forced to be on a ship with a menagerie of different people, each interesting in their own ways, it is a good idea to get to know them. Preferably with their permission, that's how Roland saw it. Amongst this interesting collection of different interests and folk was a certain man that Roland already knew to a small extent. They've traveled together before, and even drank together... he wasn't very good at holding his drink, mind you and started chopping up boxes and flooding the deck with fruit... but still it was a unique experience at the least. The ship ride was long, and more then a little boring, Gwen was laid up almost the entire time with stomach pains and vomit. Poor thing, it's likely she'll either get her sea legs on the next trip or remain one of those permanent seasick types.
It was late in the afternoon, the sky darkened except for the light of lanterns and stars, the deck awash with the cooling dark blue that covered the only world he knew. He wasn't alone here, mind you, but that was the point. He found him on deck, for some reason he didn't know, and approached casually with a soft grin. "Hey Sabin, I've been looking for you. I got some whiskey, one of the merchants on board gave it to me after I did him a favor." He held up a bottle in his left hand, he also had wine, but he had a feeling that Sabin preferred the firey taste of whiskeys to the subtle sweetness of wine. That was his choice, and his right. "I'm afraid everyone else is either too young or liable to paint me with their insides if I went to them, care for a drink?"

Sabin, standing on the deck, looking at the deep blue sea. He had been doing this for the past few days on ship, but he still felt refreshed everytime he was here. This was where he belonged- at sea. He knew he wouldn't be travelling much by ship, and while he was here, it was best to enjoy the life of a sailor- except he wasn't one currently. Just a stupid traveller, lost in direction. A life without directionw as depressing to most, and it certainly had negative effects on Sabin, but he liked to be an optimist and think that something random and exciting was in store for him.
So as he was just recalling the days of his pirate, smiling as he found it to be very comforting, he was approached by a certain someone who he knew pretty well... or not. However they were acquaintances, and had a round of drinks in the past. Now was probably the time they should form a bond of friendship. Who else but Roland Hawkthorne?
" You wan' eround o' drinks, hm? Ah, sure. I don't mind at all. I was pretty bored anyway."Sabin replied. Chatting would be better, he thought. Some good way to pass the time.
"So, Roland, we've met before but haven't really known a lot about each other. What kind of proffession are you into?" Sabin asked casually. Now he knew some people did not like to talk a lot about themselves, but he assumed Roland was alright with such talk. If he wasn't... well, Sabin probably had no idea how else he'd carry on the conversation.

"I'd love a drink personally, and the best way to drink is with others. Drinking alone is just a sign of being depressingly lonely." He cracked a grin, and conjured up a glass as if by magic. Setting it upon a stack of crates nondescriptvely sitting there for no real reason, probably full of unimportant items like shoestrings or napkins. Made for a good table at the least. "Elmine knows I'd love a drink with the way this trip is going." He added with a small laugh.
As he poured the dark liquids into the mug, he looked over at Sabin, a brow raised questioningly. "Hrm? I thought I've said before, I'm a mercenary." No shame in it, he eagerly shared this information. "I do things for people for money, I've dabbled in being a soldier though, no fun. I'm not a big fan of the combat side of things." The glass was full, and he sat the bottle of whiskey on the crate next to the mug that almost bubbled with the potent alcohol within. "You see, that's the thing about mercenaries that people don't seem to understand. There's more to missions then just hitting things with a big piece of metal until they stopped twitching. That's not the only kind of thing people want done, there's also errands people are too lazy to do themselves. Being a courier, talking to people for others, intimidating so there isn't a need for a fight in the first place, finding lost things, charming people to do things they wouldn't normally, doing tedious paperwork, losing tedious paperwork." He gestured with his hand as he rambled on, turning his hand in a circle as he leaned on another set of crates. What he was describing probably sounded incredibly boring, that's because it was. Being a mercenary was incredibly boring at times.
"There's more to it then being a sword for hire, though some people do take exclusively combat contracts. Those people being the ones who get into the business without realizing there's atleast twenty menial errands for every interesting proposal." Could Roland fight? Of course, but that didn't change the fact that most of his merc work was passive.
"Me, personally, I specialized in scouting and intelligence gathering. I find things out about people that people want to know, kind of like I buy and sell information if you want to call it that. What about you? What do you do?"

"Haha, so true. Drinking with others is certainly a fun experience, and much better than drinking alone." Sabin replied, taking a swig himself.
"That's quite interesting. Gathering information, delivering couriers, losing paperwork? Sounds like you've got lots of stuff to do as a mercenary. Heh, seems you've got all the adventuring you can do without fighting. Respectable." Sabin acknowledged, now taking another swig. It tasted quite sweet, yes wine was something Sabin liked a lot. Of course whiskeys had their own 'thing' but Sabin decided to drink some wine for a change. Boy was it good.
"Me? I'm just a wandering mercenary... or so I'd like ter think 'bout myself. But I don't like fighting exactly. I just prefer... exploring. I used to be a pir 'ate but quit that 'coz it was too much trouble. I prefer trying out the culture in different countries." Sabin said, closing his eyes and he yawned.
"I recently was hired into fighting in an arena in Bern. The price was a nice red gem. Well, pretty risky, that was, but I somehow ploughed through that mess." he said, taking out the red gem from his pocket and showing it to Roland, then putting it back in his pocket.
" I bet you have more dun with your work. You don't even need ter fight." he added.
