The new battle system will take a bit to get used to but it's fun.

Since this is the topic on the Tales series (I guess?) I felt a need to post this here. Today I sgtopped by my local Gamestop and saw something while I was browsing the PSP section. A Tales game! Well, I've only ever heard good things about the series, and I have meant to play some of them, so I grab it. The game in question is 'Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology.'
Barely an hour into the game I have turned it off and I am going to return it tomorrow. Why? Let's review the first hour of the game as I saw it.
1: No explanation. Now, I understand that is part of the game, and being thrown into battle first thing with no instruction isn't foreign to me. But I was kind of hoping a Tales game would have more to a combat style then 'Move forward, move back, attack, Guard.' Even ToP at least had jumping and flanking enemies. A disgrace on what the game is actually capable of.
2: One at a time job quest. Ok seriously. Take this job to get me a potatoe from this one dungeon. Instead of being able to grab 3 or so quests at once, you may have to return to the same spot ten or more times just to complete all the quests. When they all boil down to pointless fetch quests or 'Kill x enemies' and there is no excuse for that. Adding five times the backtracking and calling it 'Hours of quests' is not what you are supposed to shoot for here.
Music is bland and puts me to sleep, control scheme is terrible, and I found myself wondering when I would get back to town so I could save and quit. Any game that within the first hour makes me not want to play it on sheer boredom screwed up somewhere down the line.
So, recommend me a good Tales game. PS2 or PSP. Sadly, I do not have any next gen systems.

There's that and the rare as hell Tales of Eternia for the psp. Then for the ps2 there's Abyss and Legendia. When it comes to Tales of and the US we get shafted hard. I personally loved Radiant Mythology, which I think targets fans of the series more than anything. If you're willing to find a used gamecube and buy it I suggest Tales of Symphonia(which is a prequel of ToP that takes place hundreds of years before)

Abyss is probably your best bet, followed by Eternia and Legendia in that order.
Hal's right, though, Radiant Mythology is essentially a fanservice game, so unless you've played enough to recognize a large majority of the characters and enjoy their interactions, it essentially boils down to a boring battle system, nonsensical plot, and absolutely abhorrent quest system.
Hell, I've played almost every tales game and I couldn't play it for more than an hour or two, so I feel your pain.

Have they released Eternia in the US other than the psp? I see it going for atleast $50+ used online normally.

Fairly certain Tales of Symphonia was released on the PS 2 actually. Got some extra monsters in it too. That's the one I'd recommend. Then again, I've not played many Tales games.

They released Eternia in the US on the PS1 under the name Tales of Destiny II, because American PS1 owners were apparently too stupid to understand that a game with the same "Tales of" moniker and the same art style was the unrelated sequel.

that's what I was thinking but wasn't sure which tales game was dubbed ToD2 in the US.
Also I don't like the fact there isn't a penitly for back attacks in graces f. Let them ambush me and make me regret for not keeping up on everybody's gear.

I like the GC controller dramatically better than PS2's anyways, just wish that I could have gotten that stuff on GC version.
Too bad that all happened before DLC was errywhere... and the GC was never exactly good at internauting in general. Wasn't PSO Ep. I & II the ONLY GC game that actually worked online?
