"Higher! Raise it higher!"
Aegis had called out loudly across the city wall. He had assembled a team of builders after finding his own way to the city, setting into the work of fortifying it. By no means was it ready of a justified siege, but he'd see it prepared in good time. His education was excellent, many rules of combat based around sieges being one of them. Already, some escape tunnels and grates were being placed in the streets and fortified, crews working to dig a path quickly. Most of his team, in fact, was tending to the essential escape routes while a smaller portion helped him raise a standard palisade. They'd be able to build around it with the arrival of more crews, but for now the best Aegis could do was use the imported and still-incoming supplies he had arranged for.
Though he was no excellent, legendary warrior, Aegis had traveled and fought for enough people that making commitments to appear later was all it took to get traders bringing supplies.
"That's it! Push the layer down!"
The crew all nodded, slowly lowering the Palisade spikes into place, two or three men moving along it as they began putting large stones along the inside to give it more structural support along with the holes dug for them. Wooden gates were being hastily, yet cautiously, carved and built nearby, the intent obviously to make a more fortified entrance with the new walls.
"With luck, more people will arrive with siege defensive gear...we need some standard pit-falls, ballista, and with luck a stone reinforcement of this wall..."
Stone was going to be the tougher resource, due to Sacea's position, but the sea and land routes would hopefully prove fruitful for bringing in the more rare supplies. For now, he had to worry about the palisade and grate-defenses to ensure the city at least held and had more than one way out should the walls fall...

A young lad pushed his horse on, his hair tied tight behind him, seeming much shorter than it actually was. He had caught word of an attack on the city of heroes, and while he had never been there himself, the person inside him had been there, and thought it worth protecting. Burgid had hastily composed the lad on her way back, it was very possible that bounty hunters could be there.
Looking around he saw a group that appeared to be working on the wall. He pulled up to them and dismounted. His voice rang out. "Aye, i am here to help with the fortifications. Who is in charge?"

Heh, he was finally here, the City of Heroes. It looked like things were going along quite well. But he needed to find a way to start helping with things around. Bandits can't simply just win can they?
Upon entering the city, Edrick noticed the lack of people checking on travelers. That might lead to a problem. Seeing one specific man that seemed to be yelling out orders, Edrick walked up and began to converse with him. "Excuse me. Do you need any more help? And if so where? I can probably do most things you need. Hopefully he would assign him somewhere.

A man in red robes was leaning on the city wall, shaking.
-smoke and fire and screams and phantoms, phantoms everywhere as the shadow of the great blackness covered the entire day sky and the old crystal spires shattered and decayed and crumbled and gave way to barren wasteland-
Alizarin closed his eyes and sighted. The visions, the hallucinations and the voices were getting worse by the day and the last city gave him no clues, not a clue at all and and and -
red white black bandits heroes dead dead dead
He ran a shaky hand through his hair. Calm down. Calm down. Calm down. Arrive. Get supplies. Leave. That was the plan, right? All he needed was to find someone in charge to let him in.

The wandering stranger seeking an entrance didn't have to try hard. Much of the palisade was still having holes dug to support their structure. However, the voice of of a nearby stranger drew his attention. Both to the man closest and the strangely feminine man asking who was in charge. He turned to face both, but spoke up first to the one furthest away.
"I'm in-charge of the construction and fortification. Aegis Hawk, at your service."
He looked to the man who had approached him, raising a brow briefly at his willingness to help. Sure, Aegis had chosen to help out of his own personal belief that no city should fall, but he hadn't expected many to be well-versed in the craft of siege-preparation and land fortification.
"I could use help, indeed. These palisades need to encircle the town's borders, but I'm only one man." Turning, he gestured at the spikes, easily as tall as ten feet. "They need to be roughly ten to twelve feet high, to prevent anyone from leaping them without falling short and landing on the spikes. Only once these are installed and properly rooted with some stone supports can we think about adding raised walkways and a gatehouse-proper. These wooden gates will be strong, but we need to get the walls reinforced to match their durability...which means we need a good base to start construction from."
Turning, he sighed as he looked once more to the construction, well aware of one horrible truth. They needed more workers and people to secure the sites around the town's edges that their supplies were coming from, or they'd not be remotely ready for any siege.

Alizarin heard the man talk about the fortifications, and gave the walls a discerning look. It may take a while before this city would be properly secured. While he had no plans on staying for so long, he needed a job. He took a deep breath, steadied his nerves, and approached Aegis.
"Could I help?" Alizarin asked. "I may not be much of a worker, but I may be able to contribute somehow. Granted that I get paid." There was no way he was volunteering. "I happen to be good with numbers and I had experience managing supplies."

The City of Heroes. When a person heard that, they'd expect something out of stories. A city of alabaster, with statues to adorn the walkways, each telling a grand tale of heroism and valor. Something where each and every person residing there would have something to tell their children, and something to aspire to.
At least, that was the image that Lily had in her mind. She had never been here before, and likely wouldn't have come, if she hadn't heard the news across Elibe that something dark was looming on Sacae's horizon. Other pegasus knights may have been tied with the war in Bern, but she was a free agent, as a knight in training. She could go where she pleased. And her convictions told her that here was where she was needed. After all, if the rumors were true... Something bad was going to happen.
And it was her duty to stop anything of the sort happening anywhere, right?
Her hair danced wildly in the wind as she soared on her pegasus, lowering in altitude. Her eyes fixed on the sight of buildings being erected. Fortifications, it looked like? She wasn't too familiar with defensive structures, or able to guess how things were being planned.
She tried heralding her approach on the way down, to make sure they knew she was friendly.
"Hey! Heeyyyyyy!" she shouted, waving an arm right up until she and Serenity landed on the ground, circling to face the nearest group of people, "I heard you could use some help! Where do you need me?"
She asked this in an energetic, assertive tone. It was true she didn't know much about building, but she did excel at being helpful wherever she was needed.
And right now, there looked to be a lot of need.

The death of her brother Christophe had felt like it had happened only a couple of weeks ago, even though it's been almost a year. She adapted his motto as her way of life, it's her moral obligation to help those in need, so when she had heard about the recent events in Sacae there was nothing that would stop the young woman from traveling to the City of the Heroes.
Claire was awe stuck in how much was going on to fortify this Sacaen city, in truth this is the only city she had seen in the plains but the architect style was pretty. Nobody should feel the need to destroy this beautiful work of art by preparing it for war, she had hoped after the battle was over they could rebuild it to look like it did before all of this construction began. She looked around, everybody was just so busy and she didn't know where to start or what to do to help out. She heard one voice above the sounds of work, he seemed as if he was in charge so that would be the best spot to start. She rode Ciel towards the man. "I'm here to help, but I don't know what to do. Is there anything you'd like me to do?"

The strange one for before had come up offering his services as another potential assistant. The two women had arrived, one with a pegasus and the other with what was clearly a war steed. Aegis knew immediately what had to be done, looking first to the man.
"See to it that the tunnels are dug swiftly! I need my crew to be productive and fast. The supplies could arrive at any moment to finish the palisade and then progress to a more fortified wall."
Turning his gaze first to the more enthusiastic woman, he motioned over toward the distance, a dirt road tracked with wagon trails and a wagon bringing more logs.
"See to the roads, miss. Fly above and if you find any who need aid to fix their wagon, report back here to get supplies moving to them. If we can't keep getting the feed of wood and stone, we'll never have a defensible location."
When he turned his gaze to the last woman, however, Aegis changed his expression from a commanding, bossy one to one of pure confidence.
"As for you, I need an even bigger favor. The higher, hillier sections of the city's surroundings will be prime positions for enemy equipment and archers...do you think you could ride and see that spots are marked? With hope, I'll be given more workers from the city to help me fix the area with pitfalls. Our enemy losing any of their equipment or ranged fighters would cripple their efforts greatly for a siege upon the city."
Looking back, he frowned at the Palisade as the workers continued raising new logs. They had hit a groove, fixing more and more into position, but he knew one thing only. The palisades wouldn't be enough alone. It was an obvious thing any strategist could know and why he planned more traps. But the sheer resources going into fortifying the palisade itself...
"Get the palisade's first layer done and change our goal to reinforcing it with a walkway!"
One of the workers looked to him, but Aegis furrowed his brow and yelled even louder.
"We can reinforce it once the stone gets here! Two of you see to the city and get barrels of water! If we take this path, we risk a flame hazard during battle, but we'll see ample stores of water are prepared for the walls themselves!"
None of them parted for the task, Aegis cursing under his breath as he moved over and, pointing to two of his workers, yelled them off toward the village. "Get moving! I'll work on the wall!" The yell was enough, thankfully, both men leaving as Aegis grabbed his armor and began to remove it. He took off the breastplate, shoulder guards, and knee guards and piled them up before moving to one of the nearby logs, cursing as he lifted, with a great deal of his own strength, the log up and carefully pushed it forward, standing it up once it fell into the hole, one of the workers nearby in awe before he ran over and began securing it in position. Aegis looked at the wall, making note of the small variations of height, but the now-working organizer had been hit too hard with the realization that it was moving too slow to make a nice, reinforced wall. He just didn't have the workforce.

It took him a few seconds to process the man's words. Hired already? That was faster than expected. Alizarin blinked at the suddenness.
"I... understand." To be honest, he expected to be rejected or at least looked at with skepticism, as was normal for him.
"Call me Alizarin. Or Ali, if you prefer." He said, though he was frowning at his nickname, then moved away and walked towards the workers as Aegis began ordering the other newcomers. Suddenly, he paused mid-step, turned around and repeatedly snapped his fingers. "Ah! Almost forgot. May I see the plans for the tunnels?"

Lily was used to following orders. It was what she was trained to do. So when Aegis gave the command, she just nodded with a determined look on her face.
"On it!" she said enthusiastically, taking immediately to the skies with a powerful burst from Serenity's wings. The winds were favorable today, and the skies had a pleasant lack of clouds. Once she reached a stable altitude, she'd be able to keep an eye on just about everything.
Plus, it was such a nice day. She was glad to be in the air. She started circling the region around the city with a smile, keeping her eyes on the roads and everything else around. Nothing seemed broken or otherwise in trouble yet, but if and when she saw something of the sort, she'd be sure to report back instantly.
She was just glad to be of use.

"Got it." Edrick said as the man named Aegis started giving out orders to people that also came up looking to help the city. It was good to see others with kind harts still in this world. Except for the man that wanted payment, but everyone had to make a living somehow. As Edrick was taking of his cloak, as black in't the best thing to be wearing under the radiating sun of the plains, people started running off to the errands that they were given. When Edrick finished folding his cloak and set it next to his pack, he slipped on some gloves and walked over to where the logs were, and, flaring his muscles, he picked up the end of the log and drug it over to the end of the wall where Aegis just propped his log up against the others into a hole. Edrick then slowly began to work the log upright, careful not to let it fall to either side, until it fell into the a predug hole. Turning to Aegis with a sigh, he said, "Sheesh, how can you do this so easily? And I can look at the numbers and stuff later if you would like too, I like to think I am well versed in them, but right now I figure this might be more important."

Burt had finally arrived at his destination. The city of Heroes. In truth Burt was a bit dissatisfied. He expected the walls to be a lot bigger and to be made of stone. However reality was always less as grand as the stories, but in this case not as grand as the rumors. As Burt walked up he pulled out a piece of paper. The fighter scratched off the mark on his first objective. He had made it too the wall, and now he only needed to interview fifty more people, make a drawing of the fortifications, scout the bandit movements, and sketch anything they had that look note worth. It was a standard day for Burt.
"Excuse me", spoke Burt as he walked up to one of the workers. "Who is in charge of the fortification. I would like to have a word with him on the design and on the movements of the enemy force. If you could point me in that direction then I would appreciate it."

"Is it just me or did seven people just come out of nowhere?" Valcrist said with a smug grin after coming out of nowhere. He wasn't wearing his usual gettup, but rather a smithing apron and a long sleeved red undershirt covered in soot and grease. Wearing thick leather gloves with a smithing hammer in his left hand, and sweat beading his brow it was clear he just came from the forge. He's been working with other smiths in getting fortifications ready. There was a lot of ironwork required for a project such as this, Valcrist wasn't particularly well versed in such things but he spent the better part of the day making all kinds of things that he wasn't exactly used to making. His skill in working with Iron transferred handily however, as he was quick to catch on and worked with gusto. He looked at all the people scurrying around, working and whatnot and took in a deep easy breath.
"Aegis, right?" He looked at the overwrought man with orange hair, he seemed to be dealing with a lot of things at once. Here to one more, right? He hadn't met the man before, as Valcrist wasn't usually the smith sent to talk with the people in charge, but that guy was busy with something so they sent the Nabatan instead. It was a confusing mess really, but Valcrist didn't want to comment. After all he didn't even know entirely what was going on. He's only been here a while, after he arrive with one of the wagons bringing supplies. Him, in all of his overwhelming good Samaritan values realized he could probably help and stuck around, it's be a while since he's had good honest work. Or rather it hasn't been that long really, still he wasn't really the type to turn down people who need help. It was one of his worst qualities really. This town also held some memories of his, so he wasn't eager to let the whole thing go down in flames. Or something. You know it still wasn't really clear what was happening, something about bandits or something. He never really got a straight answer.
"I'm with the blacksmiths, and we're running low on iron. We've still got enough to work with for now, but do you know when the shipments supposed to arrive?" Valcrist said with a shrug, they've been run ragged. Making things for fortifications, making weapons for the militia, not to mention things like horseshoes for the steeds and all around they were running low on steel and iron. "Also with limited resources, we need to know what we should be focusing on until they arrive. If we try to shoot for everything we run the risk of not finishing anything."

Aegis was glad to see one of the new arrivals come to his aid, even if it was only partially. He shot the man a smirk though, his voice loud enough for any near to hear.
"You learn hard work living with adoptive parents, and you train for it when you have a goal to return to the Nabata later in life."
It wasn't exactly accurate, as Aegis hadn't been told of his origin, but it was what his adoptive parents had planned so long ago. However, at the voice of one of his workers chatting to a new stranger and the arrival of a new smith aide, he looked toward both before his smirk turned to just a simple look of questioning as he roughly pulled free his copy of the tunnel plans for the other fellow.
"We've got a Pegasus Knight watching the roads, but the next shipment should be a fresh set of iron and steel, friend. I'd tend to the fortification's iron bindings and gates if we he have to make a choice, though. Anyone who comes to help worth their steel will have a weapon, so we should worry about back-ups lastly. Once we finish the four sets of gates, we can start throwing our iron into arrows, if anything. Perhaps a simple iron guard with arrow slits on them as well. We can't reinforce the the city, but we can make life easier for archers along the walls for when this battle starts."
As he finished, he looked to Ali, making certain he was paying attention before tossing the rolled up plans, the weighted seal allowing the task to easily occur without fear of it falling into the dirt. The man would hopefully speed up construction there so he could get more of his men back, but until then, he looked to the man who had been asking for him, his voice calling over to him.
"I'm in charge, friend. The design is already set, but if you wish to share some news of the enemy, go right ahead!"
Aegis carefully moved to a new log, looking as the other workers resumed their own pressing work. The Palisade would come along quicker now, with all luck, as the more recent arrivals seemed to have boosted the handful he had up here working into a new speed. Grabbing the log, he did the same as before, the only difference being that when he let the palisade fall into position, he turned his gaze back to the smith.
"I figure there are some men and women in the city who won't be working, but rather waiting. If you see a few, why not send them out here to aid? The physical labor is something we need to handle if we want this place to be ready."
