Name: Hadrian
Class: Bishop
Age: 31
Born in: Delfia
Appearance: If one ran into Hadrian in the street (unlikely that would happen, but this is a hypothetical argument), one would first notice how pale he is. His skin is almost silvery, it's that pale. He is also very thin, and has fragile, almost elfin features. His limbs and extremities (fingers and toes) are long and slender, and look like they might snap in a strong wind. This appearance makes him look younger than his 31 years. He looks like someone who was bedridden for most of their life, and that's because he was.
As a result of this, his hair has grown beyond what would normally be expected from members of the Church (not that that matters anymore, but I'll get to that later). His brown hair has grown thick and unruly, covering his ears, and reaching down to the nape of his neck, not the orderly haircut one would expect. Almost hidden beneath this messy fringe is a pair of slender eyes, blue in colour. They hold an intensity which is at odds with the rest of his body, providing windows into the determined soul of a Light magic user. These are topped by thin eyebrows, permanently drawn into together, making him appear as if he's constantly in pain (which he almost always is). His thin mouth is often kept pursed, as if he's trying to hold back screams of pain. He has a strange, breathless way of speaking which nay be difficult to hear in loud situations. He is incapable of raising his voice.
He wears the white robes from the Church (similar to those of Artur from Sacred Stones) however he now covers them with a thick black cape when travelling, to avoid detection. His thick black boots and leather winter gloves betray his original standing as a nobleman, however. He never wanted for gold, or attention, before deserting the Church. Now it's the opposite, he constantly worries about gold and preserving his secrecy. Perhaps this is the reason his condition is worsening.
Story: Hadrian was born into one of the lesser noble families in Delfia, and a life of riches and political power was ahead of him. His parents were not kind, and fell victim to so many of the 'noble' stereotypes. Lavish parties for lords and ladies across the land were held in their manor house, and they were obsessed with fame and reputation. So when fate intervened and insured their boy would not be the strong hero they wanted him to be, they were slightly crestfallen. Hadrian was born with an illness that made him frail and weak.
Physical exertion tired him faster than any other children his age. His body only seemed to get taller, it never filled out like a healthy child. However, his parents were undeterred. At the time, common belief was that those who were physically weak often possessed immense magical power. Fortunately, they were right. Suddenly, Hadrian's parents had a renewed interest in their son, and began to consider a career in the Church.
Hadrian didn't have much say in the matter. He began his tutelage in the Church, and began to use Light magic. The frustration he felt held back his progress, however. He had yet to find a cause to devote himself to, which is the true essence of Light Magic. So, one day, he and his tutor went through the streets of Delfia, Hadrian's first true trip beyond the confines of the Church and his noble home. On the streets they passed many nobles, many of whom Hadrian recognised. Many of them had expressed their pity to his parents over his condition, and offered their sympathies and condolences.
However, at the side of the street there was a woman begging. As the noble passed her, she reached out her small tin cup, asking for a small sum, pittance in the eyes of that particular noble lord. However, with a swift motion, the noble kicked the cup from her hand, scattering the meagre change she had collected. At once, Hadrian and his tutor rushed over to help the woman gather the coins. Hadrian then noticed that her condition was worse than his own, yet the noble had not afforded her any of the pity he had shown Hadrian over the years. At once, Hadrian felt an unfamiliar anger rising in his stomach.
He had found his purpose, Hadrian was determined to offer those who lacked noble blood what he had been offered as a noble: protection. For years this was his driving force, and as a result his abilities increased exponentially. He began to rise up the ranks of the Church, ascending first to the rank of Priest, focusing on his healing abilities. His parents, who wanted him to become a mighty hero, were disappointed, but Hadrian didn't care. He had found a purpose worth serving. As a Priest, Hadrian travelled across the land, using his stave to protect people, and serving as an emissary to all the lands. He spread the message of Saint Elimine through his actions, praying and healing the poor. He was often roped into mercenary troops as a healer, providing valuable support when routing bandits from areas. His fair and just viewpoint, along with his frail health, made him somewhat endearing to the communities he helped, and soon word reached the Church back in Delfia. The Bishops decided he was a good example to the people, and decided to indict him as one of their own.
He was a bishop of the Church, however, when Kraft rose to power. Disillusioned with his methods of using the Church as a method of political gain, Hadrian slowly began to lose touch with his light power. Finally deciding enough was enough, Hadrian defected from the Church, deciding to spread his power by himself instead of alongside the now corrupted Church of Saint Elimine. He decided to travel to Laus, where his skill as Bishop would be best put to use slaying the dark hordes and protecting the common people. Moving from village to village, and staying nowhere too long, he has become somewhat of a legend among the poor and the sick. He is still in Laus now, dealing with the aftermath of the dark incursion.
Personality: Hadrian likes to view himself as the champion of the common man. For a long time he felt as though he had no purpose, no goal to devote himself to in life. His parents decided everything for him, as they felt he was unfit due to his illness. It is difficult to tell whether his determination to protect the masses is a truly noble goal, or simply self-manufactured out if spite in order to defy the parents who once controlled his life.
As a result of his 'controlled' upbringing, Hadrian has an innate dislike of authority. He does respect those who he views as just and fair, but he has little time for corrupt and unfair systems. This was his main reason for leaving the Church when Kraft took over, he felt the objectives of the Church had changed too much and he no longer felt part of it. He will support the people in revolutions, and expressed support for the initial uprising in Bern, however he is less certain about the current one.
Sadly, his body has a habit of holding back his willpower. While Hadrian has enough willpower to move a mountain if he wanted to, his frail disposition means that he is ill suited to combat. This creates a certain amount of frustration in his character, but changes the way he fights quite a bit. He will often either try finish fights quickly or avoid them completely. He does prefer to focus on his healing, but his offensive Light magic is nothing to be sniffed at either. His devotion to his cause allows him to truly be in tune with his magic, making him a formidable Bishop.
Having led a sheltered life prior to breaking away from the Church, Hadrian lacks many interpersonal skills. He is kind at heart, but sometimes comes across as flippant or uncaring. He has a tendency to get ahead of himself, especially in battle situations, and puts himself and his comrades at risk (not intentionally) due to his frailty. He is not particularly intelligent, but is capable of putting the odd strategy together in battle.
