Some of Gaius' more notable features would be his hair and his eyes. The man has his mother's eyes which are crimson in color and are said that they do a great job of showing his emotions whenever he gets riled up. His hair is a blue color which he often keeps in a pony tail with some bangs coming down on his face. Other than that the man lets his hair do whatever it pleases, often resulting in crazy bed hair which never bothers the man. He's not one that cares much for his own physical appearance so it's only a miracle that he doesn't end up looking like a horrible mess.
These are the traits that are most recognizable and it's because of this that Gaius is often noticed even when he doesn't wish to be. The man stands at an exact 6' and weighs about 200lbs. He has a muscular and well defined build to him from years of training and military service. Luckily the man suffers from no scars or anything else on his skin. Though despite being much to his annoyance he's often said to be a spitting image of his father by those who knew Gaius and his father.
When it comes to clothing Gaius isn't particularly a picky fellow though there is something that he wears quite often outside his normal attire. A necklace which has the emblem of his family is normally worn around the blue haired male's neck. The emblem of the Balmung family is a wolf holding a crescent moon in its teeth. If one were to know Gaius they would probably find it a bit strange that the man wears such a thing around his neck and even Gaius isn't exactly sure as to why he wears it but he does.
Well there is a reason but not one that Gaius is really willing to share. The only thing that Gaius wyvern sports is a brown saddle and harness which is worn whenever the two go on missions or flying. There are sometimes that Phantom wears no saddle when Gaius and the wyvern takes flight. That only happens when either they're in a rush or Gaius is feeling particularly lazy. Sometimes both happens and that's when you know the day is going to be quite special. Phantom does however have a scar over his right eye which he got when he was young and is a bit larger than most wyvern and sports black scales. Other than that neither of the two really care for appearance all that much.
Personality:
Having gone through a lot during his life Gaius has been through many different phases of his life. There was a time that the man was an arrogant, angry, rebellious child who wanted nothing more than to prove that he was better than everyone else. There was also the time that he was a proud and driven soldier who fought for the man next to him and followed orders, no matter what they might have been. In time those phases of Gaius had died and a new man now roams about Elibe.
Gaius could be easily described as being quite laid-back. The man doesn't get worked up over things easily and much rather go with the flow than be all up tight all the time. To most people's surprise underneath that laid-back exterior is a man that's quite vigilant. Not much get past Gaius and he has a tendency to pick up on the smallest details. One has to keep their eye open when flying at the speeds that he does.
He's quite surprisingly an honorable person, much preferring to keep his word and see things through once he starts them rather than not. Gaius seemingly still caries a warrior's code and detest people with no sense of honor or sportsmanship. He understands that at times he'll have to get his hands dirty and doesn't have issue doing so but he'd rather do things differently. Make no mistake however, Gaius is not some dashing knight. No in fact he dislike the idealistic noble knight in shinning armor types. He finds thrill in fighting and taking down strong prey at their best, that is all. It is no wonder that he's also straightforward, rather speak his mind and be honest. This can also be a double edge sword as he can be headstrong and willful, having a sort of devil-may-care attitude that makes it hard to reason with him when he makes up his mind or decides to do something.
As such it makes it hard to follow the man as he is quite unpredictable when it comes to where he's allegiance lies and what his plans are. Being a man that takes on any job it is not surprising to see him fighting for one side and then the next if the pay is right. Of course there might be moments of his own morality get in the way of things but it is hard to read just what's going on in his head.
Gaius prefers to work alone and looks after himself and his wyvern, rarely going out of his way to ask for help. He does this out of fear of losing more people, especially if he's put in charge of a situation. As such it's hard to get close to Gaius on an emotional level. It isn't so much so on a physical level and it does not help that the man is a bit of a flirt as well. Ah yes, he'd rather look at a pretty face than work which puts him in scenarios that bring him more trouble than they're worth.
When it comes to stuff that's important to him he's fiercely protective of it, example being Phantom. The wyvern is basically the other half of Gaius and the man wouldn't know what to do with himself without the wyvern. Because of this Gaius would go to hell and back for the wyvern and vice versa. Though he often argues and has playful banter with the creature he loves that damn thing. Gaius does have a habit of making witty remarks and sarcastic comments which often gets him in trouble.
Phantom is a bit of a different story. While the wyvern is quite laid-back much like his rider unlike his rider the wyvern is much more involved with people normally. He's more curious about new things and people he meets, often getting a good look or sniff of the person. Out of the two Phantom is more caring, though this probably is more of Phantom trying to keep Gaius from becoming a complete sociopath. Phantom is usually the mature one between them often getting Gaius off his lazy butt or forcing the guy to help someone when Gaius gets distracted by a pretty face. The two do get along swimmingly and Phantom is quite protective of Gaius.
Story:
Gaius Balmung was a mistake. He was the result of someone who should have known better, someone who knew the consequences of their actions but went on impulse instead. Someone who to this day wished that she did things differently so that when and if Gaius was born it would have been done in a situation that would be better for the child. She didn't want this, not at all. Gaius' birth was something that wasn't supposed to happen nor was it expected by neither his mother or father. Quite honestly it was a surprise to a lot of people.
Gaius was born to Athena Balmung, a respected and powerful general of the Bern military and a man that even to this day has a thick shroud of shadow around him. Athena was well known for her skill and veracity on the battlefield often terrifying her foes as they saw the shadow of her wyvern fly overhead. She became so famous amongst Bern's military and infamous to her enemies for her strength and utter destruction of her enemies she was eventually given the title of 'The Devil of Bern'. She worked hard and tirelessly to get where she was and having a child was the last thing on her to do list.
Due to the surprise of having a newborn son, Athena had to think of something to do with him. She didn't want to leave the military and take care of the child as that would be throwing all her years of work away but with the father nowhere to be found she had to do something. Athena was the last of the Balmung family so she had no one really to turn to instead of an older fellow who taught her how to ride a wyvern. He also happened to be the man in charge of taking care many of Bern's military wyverns and breaking them in.
The man reluctantly took in Gaius and promised he'd raise the child as his own while Athena was away. This man was quite tough on Gaius as he felt a bit of anger towards the child seeing how much grief he caused for his favorite student. It didn't help that the older man was also raised with mostly tough love. Growing up Gaius didn't have many friends and most made fun of him for the fact that he didn't have friends or a dad.
Those were just the kids, the adults didn't really speak to Gaius much and most kept their distance due to fear of Athena and what she might do to them if they said anything wrong. As a result of this Gaius spent much time at home which meant much of his time was spent helping the old man. Gaius was put to work helping out with the old man, cleaning and feeding the wyverns. Every now and then they would get a visit from Athena, which was a happy event for Gaius or so he thought it would be. Despite loving her child Athena couldn't help but be a bit distant from him which Gaius picked up on.
All of this lead to Gaius having quite the troubling childhood. He often got into fights with other children and would ignore the old man. The boy was letting out all of this pent up anger in the worst possible ways. It wasn't until one specific day that Gaius began to change a bit. The old man was trying to break in two young male wyverns who were both apparently the offspring of Athena's own wyvern. The one causing the most racket was the larger of the two and was not going to give in at all.
The smaller one was more relaxed but refused to let anyone get close to it, often moving away or snapping at anyone that got close. The only person able to get close to this one was Gaius but the wyvern still didn't trust anyone else enough to let them get close. It was on a day that the old man got tired of the larger one's attitude and decided that then was the day that he broke it. Gaius was called to assist the old and that was when things got crazy. The wyvern began to thrash about and almost hit Gaius if it wasn't for the other wyvern stepping in.
The two wrestled for a bit before the old man, and some more assistants, got in to finally break the two up. One wyvern wasn't as lucky as the other when it came to marks as it gained a scar that day, on that would stick with it for the rest of its life. It was this act of kindness that Gaius came to the conclusion that he wanted to join the Bern military and become a rider much like his mother. He wasn't going to do this because he wanted to carry on a family name or anything he just wanted respect.
No longer would people look down on him or make fun of him. They wouldn't compare him to his mother but like him for who he was. Gaius wasn't of age at the time so the old man wouldn't let him go and when Athena heard of this she was even more against it. Despite being shot down Gaius didn't want to give up. He eventually earned the trust of the scarred wyvern and the two began to care for each other.
Now Gaius never flew with the wyvern he just often let it out of its pen and let it run around for a while. The old man took notice of this and felt a bit sorry for the kid and decided he would teach him how to ride. When Gaius came of age he enlisted into the Bern military and quickly earned his place. During his training he pushed himself to the limits to prove that he was more than what people said he was. Even other recruits teased him and made fun of him for the same stuff Gaius had been hearing as a young child.
This lead to some fights of course but it wasn't like Gaius cared much. He and Phantom prove themselves during their training but that still wouldn't be enough for fate it seemed. Much to Gaius' misfortune his mother had been declared MIA after a battle during the Bandit War. This struck Gaius hard, even though he was never particularly all that close to his mother. It was then that Gaius felt that he was now doing all of this for her instead of himself. It didn't help that now people began to act weird around him even more so than before.
Gaius dealt with it though, hoping that one day to make his mom proud of him and to make Bern a nation to be feared more than it already was. It was during his first real battle that Gaius learned the horrors of war and what he was getting himself into. He was assigned to a squad of riders under the command of someone who once worked with Gaius mother. They were on patrol when they came across a large group of heavily armed bandits. The squad did their best but the command officer was taken down and control of the group needed to be seized.
It was Gaius, who at the time was probably the least likely to do this if you asked anyone else, that took control and won the day for his squad and Bern. After this even Gaius was promoted for his service and put in charge of the squad, which happened much faster than Gaius had expected. This was probably mostly due to his name which most of his commanding officers and fellow soldiers knew and either feared or respected. Being in charge of his own squad so early was definitely a rush for Gaius but he brought the man down to earth.
No longer was he in a rush to prove himself, no long was he filled with pride and ego. All he cared about was his squad and his wyvern. They went on many missions together and escaped many tight situations. Gaius Balmung's name had eventually become famous in the military for their quick victories and amazing comebacks. Among his enemies he became infamous, especially among Pegasus Knights. While the rivalry between the two winged mounts was well known Gaius never really cared about it. His men on the other hand were a bit too into it.
Often they found themselves up against Pegasus Knights and a lot of them wanted Gaius' head. He really hopes nowadays they've let it go and he doesn't have to worry about every Pegasus Knight trying to kill him. Eventually Gaius earned the name 'The Black Rider of Bern' due to of course the color of his wyvern Phantom. Things looked as if they were going up for Gaius and the man found himself belonging for once, which was something he never thought would happen for him. His men and Phantom were the only things he needed.
It was during the war five years ago that would change everything for him. It was toward the end of the war, it was clear that Bern had lost and higher ups were becoming desperate. In turn Gaius and his men were sent on a mission that seemed like nothing more than a typical patrol. Now Gaius never really cared all that much about patriotism, well not anymore anyway. He was in it for his men at this point, if it wasn't for them he wouldn't have gotten promoted to the rank he was and he wouldn't be a respected member of the army.
So for Gaius it was a terrible sight to see that they sent them on a suicide mission. Gaius wasn't sure what the hell the higher ups were thinking sending them out here. This was no mistake, there was no way anyone could miss a force this big. Gaius and his men were slaughtered, even though they put up the best fight they could. One by one Gaius watched friends being killed before his eyes. He would have joined them if it wasn't for the sacrifice for two of his men and them begging that Gaius be the one to live this. With much reluctance, the man left and race back toward Bern.
Enraged, Gaius marched himself to his higher ups besides the obvious need for him to seek medical attention. When he confronted them he was accused of disobeying direct orders and engaging the enemy. Gaius couldn't believe it, he fought for this country! His brothers and sisters shed tears, sweat and blood for this damned country that had been doing shady business for years now and that's how they were going to treat him?! Due to Gaius' honorable service and his mother's reputation they decided to do nothing more than to strip him of his title and discharge him of duty. Though it wasn't like it matter much seeing how Bern lost the war anyway and new management took over.
After this Gaius wasn't sure what to do with himself, everything he knew was gone. The man wandered aimlessly through the world for a long time, throwing everything tied to Bern away. It didn't hurt that for some odd reason people hide Gaius' existence anyway, probably to discourage the man from saying anything about what happened. It didn't happen immediately but eventually people stopped caring about what Gaius had to say or what he had done. It was at this point that Gaius really turned his back on Bern.
The man became a wanderer, taking odd jobs here and there. He did whatever came to him. Deliveries, transportation, protection, you name it and Gaius will do it for the right price. It was during his travels outside of Bern that the man began to question what he fought for, how many people died for stupid reasons. This wasn't just only on Bern's side but also on the side of everyone else. They tried to make things so black and white when there was so much grey and it was normally filled with someone else's blood. Gaius was so tired of it, so tired of it all. Now the man just travels from place to place getting whatever odd job he can.
