"Rebellion?"
Being from Bern he had heard of it before. His parents made sure to keep out of things like that though, but he knew that the Wyverns that were sold in the Jaywood ranch often went to the government to fight the rebellion. Not that Grimm really cared, he adopted his parents values in trying to stay out of it. It didn't pose a huge impact in his very small home, and it didn't come his way once. There was no point getting involved and joining a war at that point. It wasn't to say Grimm couldn't get convinced one way or the other. He just didn't have an opinion right now. He supposed it must have been a bit more serious then he originally thought though, if it was the cause of what happened here.
"I'm with Vergil on this one. It's better to get the experience of doing it for us right now. I'm happy to help."
Grimm smiled, leaning back a bit more in the chair while raising his arms behind his head to relax. It felt good to be off his feet for now, but he was already getting excited about doing a mission. He figured maybe later this guy could tell him more about the rebellion. He had to be careful though, he knew already it was maybe going to be a bit bias. Still, it was nice to hear both sides if he could.

"Maybe it's for the best that you don't know about the Rebellion," he admitted as the barkeeper emerged from the backroom, two plates stacked high with food. "It's quite a mouthful of a story. But since you're sure about the job, we can set out for my house after you guys finish up dinner. We can talk about it more there if you're willing to listen for hours." he had certainly learned his lesson after that fight with Elesia on his side. Funny how she just seemed to keep popping up in his thoughts; would she ever truly leave him alone?
"Enjoy," the woman cracked a smile before she shuffled back behind the bar. She had even given them drinks, that was pretty thoughtful of her. But the murky brown liquid was indistinguishable from any other alcohol in the similarly-colored mugs. Was that beer? Cordial? Ale? It occurred to him that this was the first day he had ever come in here in his life, despite living two blocks away. Whatever it was, he had a sneaking suspicion it was all they were gonna get for free. Aw man, his stomach was having second thoughts about giving those eggs to Grimm. That stuff smelled so good hot. "Oh, that reminds me!" he put the gold back in his bag and brought out in its place a small black book. "If you were wondering if I had any weapons, I have this to protect me. N-not like, book-fu or anything. I'm a mage." He followed that up with a tiny explosion of fireworks that spelled out 'Z-A-C-H' from his fingertips. "Heh-heh, you wouldn't believe how long it took me to figure that out. I think the real trick is keeping the magic from going everywhere."

Huhhhh.
So the eggs and goat thing had been... literal.
Vergil eyed what he suspected was not actually food with a suspicious eye, poking it with his newly-provided fork - was that thing sanitized? - before experimentally stabbing the eggs with it and ripping the jiggling gold from its kin like so much flesh. ...What the HELL was wrong with him. AhHEM. Conversation! "Couldn't... hurt to learn, I guess," he allowed in a fairly non-committal matter. It wasn't that he was against the Rebellion or anything, from what little he knew on the subject it sounded like the rebels had a point, but Vergil just couldn't see himself fighting and dying over who got to be king.
But apparently some people did, and they were willing to do whatever it took, even ripping their own country apart in civil war. Vergil wasn't even going to pretend to understand it, so he couldn't judge them for it, it just all sounded like a huge deal over something that wouldn't affect most people on any appreciable level. But then, what did he know? He had never had to live in that kind of world. Maybe it was worse than he thought.
Zach's little trick with magic certainly got Vergil's attention, he leaned forwards a little eye in obviously-impressed, open-eyed interest. No subtlety or restraint there, at least not until he sat back up after the show and tried to act like he hadn't just done that, but Zach would have to be literally blind deaf and dumb to not notice, AND looking away at the time for that matter. "Huh... that's pretty cool." Yeah, play it cool, there was NO WAY that Zach would EVER have noticed his immediate reaction. "I, uh, I don't know anything about magic, I'm just a guy with a sword. But it looks cool. And if I can ever get a magic weapon, I will. Do you know anything about those?"

Grimm didn't have the problem Vergil had about the food. It was there, it smelled good, and the farm boy in him would have been let down if he didn't start tearing into his meal like it was a thanksgiving dinner. He didn't much care that all the meal consisted off was eggs and goat. The drink was great too, and at the speed he drank it down it might as well have just been brown water. Even if it was, it was pretty likely Grimm would have been drinking it just the same. Sitting next to the two more civilized people, Grimm definitely stood out here.
He was so enthralled in his food that he actually had zoned out a little during the slight back and forth between Zach and Vergil. Well, he was until Zach had done his slight bit of magic. Grimm had never seen magic before, not like that at least. No one back home knew any magic, and when he heard stories it was always things like fireballs and lightning bolts. He didn't even know you could do small things like that, and it was pretty cool to boot. In fact, it had been enough to stop Grimm from throwing meats into his harvester maw. Something that might have seemed impossible a second ago.
"Wow! You gotta teach me to do that!"

Vergil seemed just a little bit hesitant to try Bernese cuisine. Zach would've raised an eyebrow at that if he wasn't still feeling so proud of himself for impressing his new partners. As of late, casting without reading from his book hadn't been so hard for him to handle. He had the spells memorized down pat, after all. It helped that he took care of it religiously. When he came down from the high, Vergil seemed to be looking at him expectantly. Grimm was still shoveling food into his mouth, as he did. He figured it would be best to wait for the young man to finish eating before he got around to his comment. "Magic weapons? I uh, yeah, I know aaaall about them," he proudly stated. "Basically, you take a little bit of nature and you bind it to a weapon. That is, like a nature spirit. I think you can bind dark magic weapons too, but you use the Nether's essence instead of Nature's and that's super hard to do. Well, enchanting in general is tough to do." he hadn't even touched the subject of enchanting in his studies. Scrying was more his speed, even if he could hardly cast a picture of the back of his head into a teacup.
"But it's worth it I'm gonna guess. They say you can even enchant bows to fire like, lasers made of fire or arrows that explode into walls of ice! Err, whoever "they" are. I read about it in books. It's really cool stuff. Maybe it's like a substitute for people who do physical stuff to cast magic. It's super rare to be able to say, swing a spear in one hand and cast a ball of fire in the other. You gotta concentrate to cast magic, and concentrate to swing a sword. I think it's two different types of concentration...and there's no way I'd give up magic for weapons after I've seen the stuff it can do..oh, whoops. I guess I went off on a tangent there, hehe. I'm sorry." He mused at the thought of a burly guy like Cyril swinging axes and calling down lightning simultaneously. Actually, that was kind of fitting for his...bombastic personality. What if he did both and got an axe that fired lightning? That would be totally awesome. "Are you both looking for magic weapons?" He didn't know what kind of weapon Grimm used but from the way he responded earlier to taking the job, he seemed to own at least one. His armor gave off the impression of a knight or a footsoldier, as countrymen tended to be. He certainly had the build for carrying that stuff.

He felt... kinda bad now. He hadn't... exactly... lied to Zach but... okay, yeah, he had. Lying by omission. He wasn't really looking for a magic weapon at all. Not a very good liar, Vergil's discomfort showed on his face a little as he patted the hilt of his new sword under the table; while the actual action wasn't visible, the motion likely was. The truth was that he already had one, he just didn't know how to turn it on, and he was too ashamed to admit it - and also not sure how much of a secret it was supposed to be.
While the Vergil of even six months ago wouldn't have given it a thought, after what he had seen in the last few weeks, Vergil was starting to awaken to the fact that there were some flat out terrible people in the world, people that would take anything they wanted from you, from your belongings to your body to your life. Now that he actually had something that was supposedly so valuable... ugh. He was probably just overthinking this. Zach didn't seem like a bad person and Grimm wouldn't do anything like that. But he was trying to be careful.
The talk of spirits went completely over his head, the novice completely clueless on the affairs of magic, but he got the gist of the general idea if nothing else. "So... spirits, huh? Can you talk to them? You personally or generally speaking, either or. Are they like... people, or alien minds, or what?" He was definitely interested, which was sort of surprising given how little of a god damn Vergil gave about magic theory in general, but now that it was actually relevant to him, he was starting to reassess that viewpoint - and he had ALWAYS loved to learn. If anything, it was more that the floodgates of curiosity had finally been opened, more than that he was actually changing anything about himself.
"And how does it compare to... normal magic," he hesitated on the word 'normal,' honestly uncertain what sort of comparison that was and if there would be any value to it. "Like could you master one to be on par with an actual magic user with it?" He leaned forwards a bit, food forgotten for the time being as he looked at Zach as though he were Magic Jesus.

He had never thought of what type of weapon he would have. It wasn't until Zach asked that he really gave it any thought. He certainly thought it would be cool to have something like that, but to be honest the entire idea of magic was starting to make his head hurt. He didn't really grasp many of the concepts Zach talked about when he was speaking about magic. Besides that, it just didn't feel right for him. Time would tell though, maybe he would find something that really spoke to him before then.
"I don't know what I want yet... Whatever it is, I want to be able to just swing my lance and send everyone flying away haha!"
Grimm might have been a bit over ambitious. No one could really do anything like that. Right? Either way, he wanted to get a little more food in his gut before they left. Besides, it looked like Vergil wanted to ask a few more questions about magic stuff. He didn't mind waiting, and after having nearly starved to death he wanted to make sure he got as much in his stomach as could fit. He was pretty sure he wasn't going to have to worry about that again, but it was hard to say.

Okay, so, definitely knight and swordy guy. If Grimm had a mount it certainly hadn't come crashing in like a bull in a china parlor...yet. Worked for free, young as he was too. He wasn't sure, but he might have just made two new friends at that table. It was like Gaea had heard his prayers! Zacharia's face broke into a grin that just couldn't go back down, even when he continued on his ravings about magic. Good thing neither of them hadn't asked him to show more of his magic tricks that he had up his sleeve. He had dozens at this point, but most spells ended in an explosion and a bucket of vomit. He still had yet to work out that kink in his powers.
"I never spoke to one too personally, but I know someone named Kel--...tic... who's g-got a magic spear. The spirit in his acts like it's hot stuff and kinda pushed me away when I tried talking to it. So who knows how strong or weak they can be, or even what they can't be? You can, though, surpass mages as a master of your weapon. It just depends on how in-sync you are with the spirit inside." He had read texts of dragon spirits being sealed away in magic weapon, and some accounts of the Scouring saying the Divine Generals had spirits like that in their own weapons. Personally, he didn't believe them since they were old and like the only two that said that stuff. Super old books were weird and they made him sneeze.
"So, magic aside," which pained him to say cause he was feeling like Magic Jesus, "when you guys finish your food we can head off to my house. Um, if you want to, that is! I'm not trying to be rude or anything." It sure beat paying for lodging, since he had the distinct feeling Miss Bartender wouldn't let them get off easy with that. "Three big old wool covered beds, Bernese style. No bedbugs, as far as I know." The other two beds he hadn't exactly been itching to sleep in - hehe, itching. They were his mother's and father's after all; they looked just as neat as when he made them when he left. There was one thing that was out of place when he had got there, but it was currently eluding his thoughts.

"Spirits..."
Vergil looked upwards thoughtfully, struggling to actually make sense of Zach's words. "So the weapon is... alive," he murmured to himself. It was maybe not the most flawlessly accurate rendition of Zach's explanation, but that was about the best way Vergil could phrase it to understand it himself. It wasn't just a hunk of metal, or something that you beat into shape - a magic weapon was something that you had to actually get to know, to synchronize your will with, and THEN you could actually use its power.
It certainly wasn't just as simple as willing it to work, though. He'd tried that more than enough times to rule THAT possibility out. There had to be something more to it. Like... the sword itself had to want to be awake. Was that what had happened when he unsheathed the sword for the first time? Was it... testing him, and then found him wanting?
It was kinda funny, Vergil realized. Since he'd gotten the sword, he hadn't really thought about getting any more. In theory it sounded cool and all, he just hadn't felt that urge anymore. He wondered if maybe he hadn't wanted a magic weapon so much as he had needed that weapon, felt its call from far away... nah, that was just the hopeless romantic idiot inside him trying to make something of nothing. But it did sound kinda nice.
Somewhere along the way he had actually done a reasonably decent job of eating most of his food, the novice realized a little late. He didn't actually remember doing that, but sometimes when he started thinking he kinda forgot to think about everything else. It wasn't exactly a clean plate, but he wasn't that hungry anymore, so probably good enough. He just looked back at Zach and smiled. "Sure. It makes sense to be well rested before an undertaking like that."

The food was gone about the same time the conversation ended, or at least Grimm's was. He ate fast normally, let alone when he was as hungry as he was. He leaned back in his chair, placing his hands on his stomach as he let out a deep sigh of relief. His mind was moving to the idea of sleeping on a bed now. The idea sounded better to him then he would have expected it to, most likely because it had been a while since he had slept on a bed. With his stomach full, he was also starting to realize how much he could have used a nap. With all of the talk about undead things and magic, he figured being fully rested and energized would be a good thing.
"Sounds good to me too! I need to get something before we go though."
He sat back up in his chair, moving over to the counter to talk to the lady that had just got them food. He pulled some money out of his pocket to get some more lamb for Abroth. He didn't need it cooked, Abroth would be fine with raw meat. He also figured she didn't need a lot, as she had already impatiently ate some questionable apples. It was important to make sure she was just as well rested and fed as he was though. If they were going to do this then Grimm knew Abroth was going to be an important part. He came back to the table a few seconds later with his raw meat for Abroth.
"Ok, I'm ready to go."

Okay, so that was that. Grimm and Vergil were coming with Zach on the wild ride that would likely never end. Wyverns were commonplace enough nowadays that he didn't need a change of pants upon exiting and immediately seeing one stretched out on the pavement. Where did a farm boy like Grimm get a -- dumb question. They said their goodbyes to the innkeep who was a little distressed to see her tenants go. With a sigh, she took their wooden dishes to the wash basin. She wasn't looking to re-marry anytime in the future but the one with the black hair was kind of cute. What did he say his name was; Grimm? It sounded fitting.
The hours flew by as they walked home and rested up. He wasn't sure he could remember quite exactly what they had been talking about for so long, but whatever the case the sun hung lower and lower with each passing glance at the window pane. Soon enough it was so low he could hardly see it. On the brighter side of things, the sunset looked amazing. It seemed to set a joyful fire to the dreary looking ghost town, throwing colors into every nook and cranny it could fill. Or a firey fire, it was hard to tell after a while of staring. Ominous. Wait a minute, wasn't there something he needed to be doing right now? the bedsheets were just so comfortable, surely he could rest a little while longer.... No! No no no, stop right there. It was school time. The time for school, that was what time it was. With a shout he not-literally exploded from bed and on to the floor. His suspicions were confirmed true; the sunset was long gone and nothing but the moon in the sky remained. It was only then as he put his shoes on that he remembered he had guests with him. It was for the best to not mention that was how he got up most mornings before the Rebellion.
"Listen, I'll be on the front porch waiting for you guys, Vergil and...Grum," he huffed as he hopped around one one leg, trying to cram the other into his boot. "I'm all ready to go right now so come out when all your stuff is packed. You never know what may happen so it's for the best that you take everything with you. Wyvern included. Not like um, into the school since it probably can't fit, but - you know what I mean." His pack was a lot lighter than it was when he first set off for home. Thank goodness, otherwise he'd be a sitting duck with that extra weight on his back. One boot on, then another, and then his belt and he was all good to go. In a flash he was out the door and an audible thump rang throughout the block when he flopped down on the front entrance.

...It was like Jaden trying to deal with the new day.
Vergil held back a knowing smile as he followed Zach out the door, carrying exactly what he had brought with him - himself, his sword, and hopefully his wits because if they were supposed to be fighting the living dead, he didn't want to get ate, and not being stupid would aid immensely in that. It was probably for the best Jaden wasn't here, honestly, though the novice did sorta miss his bro already - J would probably have gone off half-cocked like the lunatic he sometimes was, and either taken on the entire school's population on his own - in which case Vergil wouldn't get any training done - or died horribly in the process of trying, in which case Vergil would be very lonely.
Not really optimal results in either scenario. He didn't KNOW that he could trust Grimm and Zach to watch his back, for all he knew they'd break and run at the first sign of trouble, but he had to trust that they wouldn't. It was trust that had gotten them through the hellscape of Oeschgen, and hopefully it would do the trick here as well.
He emerged out onto the front porch with a breath of the brisk night air. He didn't care much one way or another about the moon, but it was a good temperature for training. Not so cold as to sap the life from his bones, but cool enough to stave off sweat and help keep him active... so long as he made a point of staying active. If he didn't keep moving, the chill would set in sooner or later. Hopefully they wouldn't have to spend all night fighting... or actually how much was LEFT of the night? Preoccupied by his thoughts and focusing on Zach and the hopefully-following Grimm, he didn't even think to check the moon and see roughly what time it was.
"Ready when you are," he stated with businesslike calmness while cricking his head one way and the other, then moving on to stretching a bit to work out the kinks from sitting around for so long. Maybe it was just their discussion so far, but for some reason Vergil felt like things were gonna go well. Or maybe it was just that he didn't see any way this could go worse than Oeschgen; he didn't have a lot of experience fighting the undead, but those he had met so far were pretty slow-moving and dumb, and compared to the skilled fighters he had come up against in the battle for the village... eh. Best not to get overconfident. Maybe there would be something unexpected there.

Shaking off a yawn, the seer looked back up at the moon - now slightly blurred by a cloud. His moon-tracking skills weren't the best but they should have enough time to get in, get out, and get out with what they needed. He just had the funniest of feelings three boys and a wyvern on the outside couldn't take on that many undead at one time. You can't help everyone after all. And the sooner he got back to the Rebellion the better. It was times like this when another powerful, firey distraction would help immensely. He trusted the two about as well as any other rookies: they would slip up like he will. How big that slip would be worried him the most.
The stars were enough light to make your way through the streets, thankfully. And even if they weren't he could boost his confidence a bit with a palmful of magic. Heck, why not do that anyway, he reasoned. At his command as most of the time, blue lights flickered into life across his hand. Elesia had taught him that trick in the brief time they had spent together actually. The alley painted itself a nice shade of blue with the magic tendrils throwing shadows everywhere; if he weren't in a hurry he would stop and look at just how beautiful the street looked with that color. Green, though excellent and superior to red in every way, just couldn't compete with how deep and pretty blue made things that weren't itself look. "I, we should take the long way there." he admitted. It would take a little bit to gather his thoughts, in any other case with twenty countrymen he would be completely fine.
"Grimm must still be sleeping o-or something like that. That's probably why he's not out here yet. I'm sure he could find where we went if he looked, the school is pretty much the biggest building in the town." And with a beast like his wyvern they could find Vergil and Zach in the blink of an eye. "And I'm just not ready yet either. I still need a minute or two-" a self-explanatory neck crack finished his sentence for him. "Something like that. I guess we should get going before we end up standing here till dawn sitting on our thumbs though. I think I've still got the key in my pockets." Silly that there would be a functioning key to a boarded-up door, or that some tavern lady would have copies of the - oh. On closer inspection it was the most generic key he had ever seemed. The old hag must've gotten a kick out of giving them that. He highly doubted it would fit in any lock, much less a school's back door. They would just have to pry it open themselves. He tossed it half-heartedly at the wall of his house; he wouldn't be needing that anymore. "Let's just go, maybe you can tell me a little more about this Aria person you knew." It occurred to him that Vergil's long spiel might have caused him to fall asleep. He hoped that all Vergil had mentioned was what he had learned before he started to doze.

The dusky gleam of the moon bathed their surroundings in a curious conglomeration of light wreathed in shadow, darkness and light locked in an eternal conflict. Eternal until the sun came up, anyways. Vergil cracked a wry smile at the strange direction his thoughts had taken, not sure if he was going insane or... well, no, he just had a tendency to think about things in weird ways sometimes. There was so much natural beauty, a world of wonders, of phenomena that Elibean science could not explain, that it wasn't hard to be swept away a little sometimes.
Or maybe he was just a wuss who should have been an ~artist~ instead of a warrior. Or he just needed a slap upside the head and to focus on the job at hand. EVen if he wasn't being paid to be all mercenary-ish, he should still try to act like one.
Zach's little display with the magic was pretty cool, Vergil was privately forced to admit to himself, though he was a bit too self-conscious to admit it out loud and accept that he couldn't do anything like that. It did look a little familiar, though... the strange magic of his sword had felt something like that. Not quite the same. A bit... warmer, maybe. Brighter. He wondered if it would be the same if he ever figured out how to actually turn it on.
But that wasn't really Zach's problem. He should focus. The mage mentioned their missing companion, and Vergil was left with the unenviable task of trying to explain the behavior of someone he'd met for the first time ever just a few hours ago. Grimm had been so eager, too... Well, he had nearly killed himself walking, so maybe the wyvern rider had just needed to take five. "Well... Grimm knows where we're going. He was in kinda bad shape when I found him, maybe he needs the rest."
He hoped so, anyways. If Grimm had cut and run, that wouldn't be very good for business. Or them ever meeting again, for that matter, and he'd liked the Bernese kid. "Yeah, let's get going. Sooner we get started the faster we can finish. It sounds like there are too many of the... former students for us to exterminate them all, at least for now, so we shouldn't waste any time once we get there."
But they weren't there yet. Had he mentioned Aria? Maybe he had. Vergil couldn't actually remember. He had said something about her to Grimm... probably... and maybe at some point while talking with Zach too. He apparently needed to stop blurting out her name at every opportunity. Not that he was ashamed of her. But if he was supposed to not be obsessed with her... eh whatever. Vergil gave up on thinking entirely and just focused on responding. "Um, what about her?"

"O-oh." He might've touched nerve right there. Whoops, that was a bad idea. ABORT ABORT
"Actually, n-nevermind about that. Sorry I asked." He panicked. He was curious what Vergil thought of his mentor suddenly being gone. On the trip into town Zach had stopped feeling like such a student, personally. It was frightening being out on your own after several years of learning under a person with wisdom a fortnight ahead of yours and strength leagues ahead. Almost like being out on a tightrope opening night when all your life you practiced with a safety net. Heck, that seemed the perfect metaphor to describe how he was feeling. The Rebels had been there for him day one, and NOTHING says comfort and care like a legion of big sweaty men ready to die for you.
The journey here was the only time he had started to feel out of his depth. He still felt that now, but Zacharia was certain he was more prepared for this than he had been when he left Boryn's room. There wasn't as much to fear when you were fighting a bunch of half-decomposed nerds. Sure the magisplosion in the building sustained their being, but he had to wonder just how long a monster like that could last in temperate conditions. Without the bodily functions necessary they would likely bloat up and explode as improperly preserved corpses often did. Gross.
His skin started feeling clammy and gross as well. This was usual for when he knew monsters were roaming nearby. Boryn's ring pulsed softly as it had been his entire trip. It was cathartic, the way it softly beat to the rhythm of the old man's heart. He wondered if Boryn could feel his heart start to race as well. Maybe. If the rings were enchanted by a master like him Zach wouldn't be surprised at all if they shot lasers or granted flight or something.
They rounded the corner alley and the school seemed to pop out from nowhere. It was a modest place during day hours, but it sure looked imposing and unnatural the way the moon's light painted it. Or maybe it was all in his head. It could've been both. Whatever the case, it didn't look as decrepit as he expected. Besides the barricaded windows and walls, it was about the same as when he last left. He could certainly smell the taint of magical warfare in the air. Did the magic regime get tougher after he left? Or were the teachers just really bad at keeping the peace? "I'm really counting on you, Vergil. Let's get in and get out quickly. There's no need to fight if we don't have to." Grimm was off doing his own thing so he really couldn't count on that guy - maybe he was napping, maybe he ran like a scrub. Grimm seemed pretty tired when they got home, he couldn't blame the poor guy for falling right back to sleep. Especially after a heavy meal like that.
