He is jovial at heart, inheritating the traits of his mother and father, but still feeling a resentment towards the ignorance associated with those who could use Elder Magic. His recent dedication to practicing Elder Magic has drawn upon this cold outer perspective, drawing out his more bitter temperament.
Story:Story: Most of Elibe finds the practice of Elder Magic, or Dark magic undesirable. More finding simply terrifying or apauling. Magical academies in Etruria are oft opposed to the practice of the dark arts, being the home of the Elimine faith. Lycia having suffered the dark devastations recently causes people to feel a provoked fear out of such displays. Ever since the acts of Hargus upon which he brought back the eldest of heroes, the champions of the scouring, people have held the dark arts to great disdain by assuming necromancy only possible though elder magics.
Story of his Parents and Carnivals Beginning
A pair of shamans, turned aside by communities in Araphen and Santaruz respectively met upon the road. From the robes and tomes they carried the two recognized one another as Kindred spirits. Zezo Randus, a male practioner of the dark arts who had a soft spot for bringing mirth to others and Niu Tao; a female shaman that had grown in an orphanage and only recently learned of her aptitude for controling elder magic. The two became traveling companions. Zezo often making the difficult times easier by entertaining Niu with his ability to manipulate dark tendrils into dancing shadows. Creating visually deceptive shows with the help of a solid backdrop and candles he could make spectactular shows. The male had a powerful proficiany and affinity with the Ruin tome he carried at his side; knowing masterfully how to make tens of tendrils dance with but the guiding motions of his hand and will.
It was on the road that they acknowledged their appreciation and attatchment to one another. For in the cold dark times Elibe suffered, having a companion at one's side under a time where both would be cast aside by the majority of the people came to make things a joy once again. Zezo then revealed to Niu, after the two had pledged their love his intentions. He wished to create a traveling band of performers. A circus of sorts. In such a setting, he could show others that dark magic was not always a thing of evil. It would also be a place that those with no home may just find it.
The traveling Eclipse Carnival started up soon after. Initially it was a singular performance. A show that began as just Zezo and Niu working as his assistant. He earned coin slowly at first. They were careful to practice their arts for amusment in smaller towns. Further from the larger cities as to prevent widespear bias and fear from bringing them to harm. It was slow, but it was honest work bringing small joys and senses of wonder to children as they saw the dancing shadows. Manipulating the shadows of the candle he coudl cast plus that of his own he made with the Elder Magic Zezo managed to usually captivate his audiences. Soon, he began to develop a small group of those who would join their lifestyle. People who felt their lives were heading in the wrong direction; those that had no where to go, sometimes picking up others on the road. A two man act started to slowly develp a life of it's own.
While on the road, Zezo learned Niu was with child. Instead of traveling further, they established a location a small distance past the Sacaen border near it's crossing with Etruria. The city of Taras practically in the horrizon from them to the west. Tents were set up and they created a standing location. When their son ,Drei, was born they decided to try the larger theme of a traveling circus. Bringing a larger scale show now to others. Three Dancers, and two other practicioners of elder magic they had met upon the road were taken with them. Those who did not find themselves of Talent but had wanted to come were provided shelter in the tents and in exchange for work setting up and managing the shows were given fair wage.
Drei's Upbringing
Drei had grown up in his father's shadow, literally. As the boy developed he revealed a talent (To his parent's joy) in the dark arts just as they had. No amount of words could describe the joy he felt when learning how to conjure elder magic as his father had; having grown up to the magnificent shadow puppet shows his father had performed. Though for larger performances they were more theatrical, almost like plays the boy had always yearned to do such acts one day. Drei was able to see many of the countries. The green plains of Sacae, that he personally knew as home having spent the first years of his life there and always seeming to return. The cold frozen lands of Ilia. A grim beauty about it. A single journey into western Bern, in his father's efforts to lighten the mood of the wartorn nation. A poor choice that had caused them to flee. The diverse populus of Lycia.
Here Drei had recieved his first real taste of public bias. While some enjoyed their shows, he could see others gaze at him with disgust or terror at the black tome in his hands when he entered towns to buy goods or merely visit. Often his outlandish clothes, the black and gold robes with the gloves that covered his palm and knuckles but only extended over the thumb and middle finger slightly through ring like twists while leaving the others bare. He had even once gotten to see Khan Yunis, the largest city of the Nabata desert. He was not fond of the heat, but found the sand's texture an interesting and welcome sensation when he first encountered it. Over the years as his talents developed further he realized he wanted to contribute in greater ways to the performances that had started to draw a larger following.
Though he could not perform to his father's mastery, he practiced rigerously so that he would one day be able to mimic Zezo's shows. With this goal openly spoken to his parents, his father decided to allow his son to take the mantle of his assistant. While his father started to refine his training, he emphasized the rules of a performing shaman within their circus.
The first rule: Never lose control
A shaman's link to the nether required more concentration when learning and the audience could be distracting. He had to learn to quiet them out. While it was a but of a buzzkill; to know he couldn't enjoy applause of his own act while he performed it he could accept this.
The second rule: To entertain, never to maim.
While Zezo knew, as Drei did growing up having still seen the scrutany some showed his parents; many assocaited the Elder Magics with only death and despair or horror. The entire dream of the circus had been to use it to bring amusement, comfort or reprieve from dailey worries to others with it. This could not be done if acts of violence were commited by one of their own.
The third rule: Defense of a life ignores rule two.
Though he was loath to teach him how to harm others, Zezo told his son with as best an explanation he could that the world as a whole may simply never accept those of elder magic. Just as some people feared those who practiced Arcana, or magic as a whole there would be people that despised the dark magics. At times, they would even try to harm him. A cold reality but a real one. His fondest memories were of his first attempt at a show. His mother and father watched on as their son attempted to conjure shadows before the dancing candles similarly to his father. While he could not generate tendrils, posessing not his father's skill with the such practices he could create condensed spiralling masses. His ability to use it to manipulate in bursts the shadows of the light created less of a theatrical show and more of a visual specticle. None the less they applauded, and tried to encourage him to develop his own way.
When he turned sixteen he had stepped out of the side ring. His father told Drei he would no logner be his assistant; that his mother would return to that and Drei would now perform as an opening act. His brief visual specticals were ered on the side of entrancing or mesmerizing to view when performed to a larger back drop with greater sources of life. The boy was thrilled, and despite the nervous pit in his stomach soon became a meorable part of his father's overall performances. Years of practice from a young age finally paying off.
After one return stay in Sacae, some patrons from Taras had suggested they try their trade in Etruria. The carnival was torn upon this offer. Zezo longed to bring a laxened sense of perspective to the holy nation towards Elder Magic; yet he knew with their current state of affairs it was a dangerous endeavor. He spoke to the entire band of perofrmers, and seperately again indivudally with his wife and son. If they were all in agreement they would depart for the borders between Etruria and Lycia to avoid truobles with the guard by entering into the more open part of the territory. The vote was unamious. They would attempt to bring the thrills and joy of the dark arts and performances to Etruria.
A notion doomed from the start. In a nation of religious, zealous ideals the people did not take nearly as well to their performances closer into Etruria. Unlike with Taras, where only those of interest who had heard of it due to it's base location being closer and having pitched up many times the people deeper into Etruria knew not what to expect of their shows. The Gypsy like band of performers were treated far worse by their patrons here. Something they had never delt with in mass. Upon the eve during their second week of shows, one of the other shamans that performed; a heavier man named Durzen was actually harassed by one of his audiance. A man who threw a rock at him as he began to conjure up dark essences to manipulate for their entertainment. Enraged by the blow to the side of his head Durzen attacked him, wounding and eventually killing the man. The panic in the audeince as they fled was quickly noticed by near by guards. Having already taken discomfort to a circus of such people close to their major towns the Etruria guards quickly set upon the circus.
Upon attempting to arrest Durzen, he resisted. The guards quickly took his acts of violence with dark magic as a justification to attempt to execute the entirety of the circus performers. However the other Shamans joined Druzen in attempting to fight them off as the guards now moved to kill instead of simply arrest. The horror of their situation dawning on Zezo, he took to tending his first priority. His family. Gathering up what he could for their finest horse, an Etrurian Ferrari named Solstice he had purchased once from Taras three years prior. Insisting his wife and son flee, he was met with the frustration of both refusing. Time however was not their ally as he could hear the sounds of the shamans fighting falling and the shouting guards. Niu insisted she stay by his side, even as Drei had. While both refused Drei's offer to help Niu pointed to her husband that the guards would overwhelm him if he was on his own. They would see their son fleeing and hound him.
Upset by this, the boy was forced to accept that he would flee. His parents would stay. As he moved to flee his father slide a tome into his saddle backs. His first Ruin Tome. Though Drei would not notice it until he had fled Etruria. Saying farewells to his parents swiftly, the boy was forced to leave as his parents turned to wait. Drei did not learn what happened until a few days later.
It wasn't until he had entered Lycia again and taken residence with what coin he had left in an Inn that the rumors eventually reached his ears. A traveling carnival of "necromancers" in Etruria had attempted to kill the audience for a ritual. They were slain at the cost of a large number of guardsmen's lives to bring down. Apparently the heard "necromancer" had been slain and his body was displayed as a warning to those who would attempt to harm Etruria's citizens; that even the dark magics of the world could not stop Elimine's blessed children.
He took the reality for what it was. A dull ache inside became supressed as he would hole up in his room within the inn. For a week and a half he stayed, locked within practicing his Elder Magic. It made him feel closer to his parents, and helped to ease the ache. As coin ran low however he made for Sacae. It had been like a home to him, perhaps there he could find a start...
