Name:Hugo
Class:Warrior
Age: 37
Born in: Western Isles
Appearance: Hugo is a large man. He has a height of 6’ 1”. He’s got a muscular physique due to the years of him working and lifting crates. His arms are strong and broad. His legs are well built due to his hunting background. He’s not built to hulky herculean proportions. His build leans more on the side of a luchador. He’s got what is described as a “square head” with salt n pepper hair. He usually sports a short beard on his chin. When it’s shaved he looks like he’s constantly sporting a 5’ O clock shadow. He sports a necklace with some shark teeth around his neck.
Hugo has a thin scar that trails down his right eye. It was given to him long ago by a fox. There are also small various cuts and scars on his arms. His beard is mostly black with some stray hairs of gray intermixed within.
He sports a pair of simple grey pants and a sleeveless black shirt. He has sturdy brown boots that are lined with fur. Simple leather made, finger less gloves on his hands. He’s got a simple dull leather vest, that is lined with shortened chain mail underneath. He sports a large belt around his waist that holds a few knives. During cold weather he usually sports a classic raccoon hat, and a brown cape lined with mixed furs on the inside. His weapon of choice are his arrows but he’s fluent in axes as well.
Personality:At first Hugo appears personable. He’s usually a hit at any town pub usually chatting up the ladies. When he’s working with merchants, customers, sellers, he’s well mannered. However when working with the animals or dealing with something or someone he does not like his polite persona goes out the window. He’s mean, intimidating, and not afraid to show off the full extent of his might. Due to his years as a hunter/trapper, he believes that people are like animals and sometimes need to be treated as such. Sometimes people need to be killed so they do not infect the rest of the world with what he calls “idiocy”. Although the fur trade business is legitimate so to speak Hugo is not above getting his hands dirty on side jobs involving assassinations and property damage.
Story:The Fortenberry family has been known for ages as one of the prime hunters and farmers for fur and skins. They own a large property of land near the mountainous borders of Armagh. It is here on this land that the family makes a living. Breeding animals like foxes, raccoon, mink, rabbits, in order to harvest the fur and meat to sell to the people. The family is large and kept in line by the patriarch Iago (Hugo’s father). The family has adopted a sort of mafia like style when it comes to the business. They make sure the animals are well tended too. They spent a small fortune importing trees, foodstuffs, and digging canals in order to improve the land for their animals. After all if the animals suffer due to negligence then that lowers the cost of their final product. The family uses guards (usually their own family members or other “adopted” members of the family) positioned at various outposts in order to prevent thieves. Those who refuse to work in line with the family business are either trained to do something else or are culled. They have “acquired” this large plot of land through underhanded tactics and sabotage. The animals are divided out on the land in accordance with their species and are kept penned in large fences.
Hugo was the 4th child born to Iago. Illegitimate in the eyes of the law but legitimate to Iago. He took the boy from his young mother and raised him within the family complex. He raised the boy to become a hunter and trapper. Using the family land as his training ground. First teaching the boy how to wield a bow so he could hunt stray animals. Such as owls and other prey animals that would otherwise endanger the business. His father instructed his children to learn the proverbial talents of the animals. (Intelligence from the fox, charm from the minx, adaptability from the raccoon, loyalty from the wolves, aggression from the badgers, and quick like the rabbits..ect.)
As a result Hugo and most of his siblings were cunning, literate, loyal, members of the family. On his 16th birthday he was told to prove his loyalty. His father had ordered the assassination of one of his competitors sons. A boy of about 13 years of age. Hugo put what he learned to the test. First he would stalk the child. Often masking himself as a loner learning on nearby wall. Or sometimes pretending to do some shopping. Learning of the boy’s habits. The child would often go to the market of Armagh with his mother. But on Tuesdays he was usually out on his own doing random errands. They boy would take the same path through the city every day, turning on one alley in particular. The child had on him a small necklace made of shark teeth, a gift from his pirate uncle. Hugo decided to hide away in the alley. When the boy approached on his usual walk, Hugo emerged out from the shadows grabbed the boy and snapped his neck. Killing him instantly. A swift painless, bloodless death. Then stuffed the body in a nearby dumpster. He made sure to run the boy’s pockets and steal the necklace. Making the whole thing look like a mugging rather than murder. He returned to his father showing the necklace as his trophy.
The family was notorious for providing furs for nobility around the world. And often times would get out of troubles and “unexplained” disappearances by bribing or “donating”.
From that day on Hugo was one of the family. He continued to learn of the family trade. He spent half of the week helping the family run the fur business. Lifting crates of food. Roaming the land feeding the animals. Taking his shift as a guard. Chopping wood. Learning leather stuffs. Training hunting dogs. The other half of the week was spent out either in the market selling furs, meat, and skins. He was always people watching.
Every few years or so he would travel aboard his Uncle Jared ship and act as a pirate. Uncle Jared was captain of a group of pirates called the Sea Wolves. They were in charge of keeping the Sea trade oppen for the fur trader family. Often launching some successful raids on opposing merchant ships. Uncle Jared and his crew honed Hugo's skill.
Uncle Jared saw talent in Hugo. Hugo's skill with a bow was useful for picking off other ships watchmen. His axe work wasn't to shabby either. Jared began taking Hugo out to sea for longer intervals. Teaching the young man how to raid towns. Iago did not mind as long as money was still coming to the family.
Hugo second greatest challenge came when he was 26. It was discovered that one of his cousins had been stealing fur shipments and had been selling them on the side. His cousin knew full well he would invoke the wrath of his family and hired out mercenaries to try and defend himself. It took Hugo a week of planning and two days of fighting but he and a group of Jared and Iago's crew managed to take him down. The battle and resulting fires destroyed Both mercenaries and crew men alike. Leaving only Hugo and his cousin to fight it out. Using the cover of darkness and his skill in long range sniping, Hugo fired the shot that felled his cousin. He took the man's ring as his trophy.
Iago saw great promise in his son. When Kraft united Eturia, Iago sent Hugo (And several others of his numerous family) out to aid the new leader. As a sign of good faith. Iago did not want to lose any buyers for his furs as many (though not all) came directly from Eutria. Some of his sons and daughters made a name for themselves in Eturia as part of Kraft's army. Hugo was not interested in pledging any loyalty to Kraft as his loyalty was already tied to his family. Hugo was there at the battle of Ostia as a simple mercenary following the orders of the army. While aiding in the retreat of one of the captains. He watched as the city was destroyed and the living dead emerged from the earth. He liked Kraft's style of thinking. It reminded him of the animals. How they would kill the weak to die in order for the strong to reign. Although, Kraft would not have Hugo's loyalty he did have his respect.
The fall of Ostia hurt the fur buisness financially. Although Hugo's involvment did win favors with Kraft and his supporters, it also cost them a lot of Ostian buyers. As a result Iago started sending more and more of his children to do shadier side jobs to help make ends meet. Hugo was given permission to travel the world doing mercenary work, assassinations, raiding, ect and send back what he earned to the family. For now he has chosen to travel to Etruria and re-enlist in Kraft invasion curious to see what destruction the Prophet had to offer.
