He was far taller than she remembered, leaner too, that was for sure. Most of all he was far stupider, the sniveling little squirt that clung to her ankles at least had some semblance of common sense. He didn't attempt to kill himself by diving into a hoard of bandits, no matter how useless said bandits had proven themselves to be for that matter. He would have turned tail and fled, screaming on the top of his lungs while he dove beneath his mother's skirts for protection.
Mel, inwardly fuming gave a sharp tug to the tip of Shugo's ears and silenced protests with a firm scowl, practiced fingers cleaning a repulsive little slice on his arm in preparation for a bandage. There had not been a word spoken by the lass following the little skirmish, only harsh glares, grunts, and a nail digging grip on Shugo's upper arm being used as any sort of communication as for what she wanted. Oh she was irritated, enraged, confused as to why he was towing an overgrown salamander about, and oddly enough silent as she continued to clean and dress the wounds his stupidity had earned him.

"Ouch that stings", spoke Shugo as Mel treated his wounds. The young rider was, well thrown into a loop. For a long time he considered himself alone. His parents were killed before his eyes and his big sister disappeared to god knows where? He had not heard from her in so long he figured she was dead or just never coming back. Here and now they were reunited, but the situation was acquired. He could tell she was angry, though he truly had no idea why. Shugo was doing good things and for good people. However it seemed that she was upset about him fighting, or maybe it was because he got injured. There was also the possibility that she might be upset with him about not writing her after all these years or telling her about the death of there parents. So many possibilities.
"Are you mad at me because I did not write", asked Shugo? "Because you are making this far more painful than required." He figured that was the best one to ask. The other two were touchy subjects and at the moment Shugo did not want to go into them. Plus Shugo already knew what she was going to say about him fighting. She was going to say the same thing everyone else said. He was too young or he was too weak. Shugo was neither of the two. He had saved more people than he could count and fought up with both monsters and men alike. Shugo was a Knight and he was not going to let anyone else tell him otherwise. Besides he had made himself a promise. He was going to make sure that no other kid would suffer what he suffered. If he had the power and his spear he was going to uproot evil and spread justice. Just like Mr. Valin taught him.

"Am I angry because you didn't write."
A thin brow rose in bemusement as he started at him, taking the moment to gauge just how serious he was with the unremarkably asinine statement. Blues narrowed she took another firm tug at his ear, twisting about in her squat to remove another roll of bandages out of her pack. Gripping his arm she began to wrap the open wounds, rolling the bulb of it between her fingers to pass it with between each rotation and finally letting out a drawn out sigh.
"No. There was no one nor nowhere for you to write to." Mel didn't need to add on that it was because she hardly cared, both for the fact that it was unsaid by her expression and that the words itself were a lie. She was confused, and the careful silence that she had held over his head was so she could realign her priorities and how to respond. The usual masks she picked up from books didn't seem to fit, and as herself it was far too tense to answer without thought to be sure that she was not allowing anything to slip from her focus or her lips.
"Explain."
The words slipped from her in a monotone, drawing back now that Shugo was sufficiently patched up and drawing out her water skin to take a short drink. Yet, her knuckles whitened as she gripped the cork, falling still while she observed him, scrutinizing every little twitch in his facial muscles. They were different from the ones that she had once been used to, harsher, the frown lines on his brow prominent compared to only being slight while he pouted for a sweet. Most of all his face was worn, tired, and she wanted to know just why he was off playing solider rather than sweating his balls off in the forge like he was supposed to at this age. What was he now...twelve? Twenty? She had hardly an idea.

"Ouch", spoke Shugo as Mel twisted his ear. Why was his ears so long and pointy anyway. Everyone else were round. Still Shugo was happy to have her around. It was strange to have family once again. Thought that feeling soon left as the pain from his ears returned. As the young boy whined the Wyvern rose from its resting place. Luna was always defensive of Shugo and the young rider was sure she probably would do something. "No Luna I am fine", he spoke looking over at the large beast. Luna stared on for a moment and then laid back down. However she did not remove her eye off the two of them.
Mel finished her bandages and then asked Shugo a big question. "Why", she asked. It had no context or content to back it up. The words relied on non verbal communication for Shugo to understand what she wanted. It was not a question Shugo could dodge. The boy wonder had to give a answer.
"Mom and Dad", spoke Shugo as a sad expression crossed his face. The young rider felt tears starting to form in his eyes, but he fought it and began to speak again. "They both died, in a bandit attack. It was my fault. I wanted to protect someone, a friend, a older brother. I attacked them first, killed one and then they tried to kill me. Our parents protected me, but... well they are dead. The village was half burned and life got cruel. My friend, the one I wanted to protect. He took me in and showed me how to fight. I swore that I would protect others. Do what I could to prevent what happen in our village from happening again." Shugo stopped for a moment to sniff the snot back up his nose. The young rider kept his face turned down to the dirt. He did not want Mel to see him as he was. He wanted nobody to see him as he was. Shugo was a soldier, not a boy. He lost that title a long time ago.
"It has been two years", spoke Shugo as he whipped his face with his sleeve and looked up into the sky. "Two years since I started fighting as a defender. I have seen bandits burn villages, thieves murdering old women, and children, some even younger than I am, loss there homes to greed and violence. I do what I can to try and stop it, but. Well there is always more", spoke Shugo as he turned his gaze back to his sister. The young boy began to think back on the deeds he done. He remembered the killing, the slaughter, and malicious. In shame Shugo pulled up his crimson helmet and placed it on his head and pulled down the visor. "I am a Wyvern Knight of Bern", he spoke. The words were half to his sister and half to himself. "I am suppose to fight so that others don't have too."

Mel's eyes narrowed into slits as she listened to him recount the tale that led him to grow into what sat before her, feeling no need to interrupt him as he spoke. Instead she examined his face, using his expressions to guide her through the words. There was no pain for her as he spoke, no remorse, it was information, and she processed it as she did any other, filling it away in various little compartments of her mind for when she needed to call upon it. It was an observation, a mental block to keep her from comprehending exactly what his words meant.
It wasn't until he started to weep that it finally sank in, just what weight his words held and just how heavy they had become for him. Actually caring about someone, it was odd to feel after a long period of thick indifference towards all that she had encountered. It was something she would refuse to mention, a slight chip in the defenses she so carefully drew up around herself over the past few years. The breath she took was sharp and brief, stomach dropping slightly as she reached out and carefully held his face in her hands. Gently she at his tears with her thumbs, the only comfort she could offer whilst he wept without breaking her own empty serenity.
"Your height hasn't caught up to your thoughts. All grown up then it seems." Mel wouldn't address him as a child, while he still was one it wasn't her business when, where, and with whom he chose to be one. She didn't know anything except the bare bones of it all, and he had made his own decisions and chosen his own path. There was no part she had to play, and no reason to interfere in something she had no right nor interest in.

Human touch, it was something Shugo missed. Sure he had Luna, but Luna was not the same as a person. No one really touched Shugo at least not in a none life threatening way. The warmth melted away the young riders barriers and resolve. The little kid began to bleed through. Even thought Shugo was fighting like a man he was still only twelve. Only two years ago he was just another boy, spoiled, and living a life of ease and luxury. His parents had not even started him fully on developing his trade. Now he was a brutal warrior fighting and killing. Each death both his allies and his enemies weighed heavy on his heart. Each action he took scared him, wounded his heart. However Shugo had to be strong. He had to hold it in. He needed to live up to Valin's expectations or show his strength to those around him. Shugo had to be stone, and on the outside he was. However the young boy was mush on the inside.
As Mel rubbed his face a flood of emotions rushed to Shugo's head. All the pain, scars, and trauma rushed forward. Shugo could not help but outstretch his arms and grab onto his sister. The young boy barried his head into her chest and began to cry. He wailed like a newborn as he let everything out. He was sure to mess up her shirt with the tears and snot, but at the moment shugo did not care. He was just letting it all out. Two years of hardship, two years of pain. It took a while, but Shugo finally gained control over himself. The young boy's face lit up with embarrassment and by habit he attempted to return to his helmet for shelter. Almost like a turtle and its shell Shugo placed the metal bucket back over his head and lowered the visor.
"I am sorry", spoke Shugo. "A rider is suppose to have more control than that. It won't happen again", spoke Shugo holding tight to his helm. The young boy was quick to try and change the subject. He did not want it to be about him anymore. He was vulnerable long enough. "So what have you been up to sis", spoke Shugo trying to keep a bit of distance.

Mel blinked in surprise as Shugo latched on to her without warning, the boy's face bashing into her chest and his voice cracked and he let out a piercing wail. Her heart jumped in her chest, arms raising up above her head in shock whilst he let his little heart out into her jerkin. So he still wants to be a child with me is it. There was sympathy in the cocktail of emotions she was being hit with, she was quite sure of it. Honestly Mel was being bombarded with so many that she hadn't experienced in what felt like decades there was really no way to describe just how she was feeling. The tide had taken her without a struggle, tugging her farther and farther away from the land where she was able to stay strong on her own two feet. Shugo, the whelp was getting to her more than she liked.
However, it was hardly as if anyone would be there to observe their interaction, no one other than Shugo himself who she doubted would speak of it to anyone of importance, if he even spoke of it. Slowly she wrapped her arms around him, awkwardly holding him as he cried out all of the tears he had built up. Her fingers splayed whilst she gently rubbed his back, slowly dropping out of her awkward crouch to a seat with him awkwardly piled into her lap.
And then as if had never occurred the child meekly slipped away out of her lap and back to his feet, irritating bucket back over his head to hide behind. It was certainly an amusing sight, the way the helmet enveloped his head and seemed to dwarf the rest of him. He looked like a boy donning his father's armor for a game, not the unwavering force of a knight he seemed to be enamored with appearing as. Mel not appearing as herself was one matter, she wasn't herself, she was no one and everyone she was supposed to be all at once. Shugo though, he didn't need to be anything other than a child, yet had seemingly chose otherwise. It was odd, and she doubted that she would ever be able to understand.
"..."
Mel propped her elbows on her knees and her chin resting on her fists, peering up at Shugo blankly whilst she thought through how she wanted to answer his question. It would be incorrect to say she wasn't expecting it, yet far less than she had been expecting a question like 'Why did you disappear' or 'Why did you leave me'. Although, she was hardly clear on how she wanted to respond to it, on one hand Shugo could think she was lying if she told the truth. And he could just as well believe she was telling the truth when it was an utter lie.
"Mmm..." She reached out, gripping the helmet between her palms and lifting it up off his head, resting it in her lap and strumming against it with her fingertips while she found a place to begin the tale, truth or lie. "For a while I was off working under a young Lord in Bern, then the very plains we sit here." Mel sucked in, trying to form a good enough tale for the moment. "Then a ship, off in the high seas to the Western Isles, there were pirates you know. The large kind, and dim witted. I hit one in the face with an apple and he toppled back overboard." She threw her arms up, lips twisting into a grin as she seemed to recount a thrilling memory. "At the docks I fell overboard and was fished out of the waters and locked in a dungeon, from there I escaped, returned to Bern for a while and under the service of that very same Lord. This was the last time I did any sort of job for him, we broke ties, and I spent some time in the house of a god, until it burned under Elimine's gaze. And then I wandered the plains, had a thrilling romance, and find myself here." It was hardly her best story, but who could tell the fact from fiction?

Shugo stared at Mel for a moment as she removed his helmet again. The boy once again felt defenseless. However he made no effort to take the metal structure back. At this point he was sure she would toss it, if he reached for it once again. Instead he began to focus on Mel's story. It was vague, but then again Shugo's story was not that detailed either. Both of them had things they wanted to hide and had things they would rather not talk about. Mel however seemed more together than Shugo was, but then again she was the big sister. She was always smarter than he was, stronger, and seemed to always have things together.
"How did you get locked into a dungeon", asked Shugo as Mel finished. Of all the things she spoke of that one stood out the most. Dungeons are usually places for criminals and people who truly did not deserve to live. To be locked up in one of them meant one of two things. Mel was a dirty bandit who all deserved to die horribly. Though Shugo would never be the one to do the killing. As much as he talked big Shugo could never hurt anyone he knew. Bandits were just bandits. In Shugo's mind they were the same person. He did not think of them as people or other individuals. That is why the moment when somebody he knew becomes a bandit things got confusing and jumbled. So immediately Shugo threw that possibility out of his mind. That meant that Mel was capture for wrong reasons. Maybe she too was captured by slavers or even thrown into prison for something she did not do.
"Did you get captured by slavers too", asked Shugo as he stared at his big sis. His eyes searched her face for a answer, but he was neither skilled nor knowledgeable about her to detect such things.

Mel rolled the helmet off her lap and shrugged her shoulders to answer his question, reaching out to tug Shugo down to sit next to her firmly. She knew better than to answer the question, Shugo was still a child who saw the world divided in simple black and white, and wouldn't understand any of the intricacies of her affairs. More so that he would find her blatant disregard for other people troubling, while to her it was simply a reality. Profit off of other people's misfortunes was certainly something he would make a fuss about. It was set, what Shugo didn't know certainly wouldn't harm him.
She didn't remember why she had been in the dungeon in the first place, something to do with punching someone? Knocking someone overboard?
The 'too' however concerned her slightly, the odd protective seed that had gone long unsown suddenly starting to sprout. Her fingers reached out, ruffling his hair gently as she pulled his head to rest against her shoulder. She was slowly being filled with the warmth of storge, and had no idea how to express it or if she even could. Shugo was just....a pain. A giant thorn in her side that she didn't want to care about as much as she did. It was easy to pretend to be an enigma, no ties to anything nor anyone to potentially be wrestled into a corner if she ever gained enemies of such a caliber. She hated him, feared him, and loved him all the same in a whirlwind of frustration.
"Don't jump into battle headfirst again if you want to keep your head firmly attached to your neck."

Mel avoided the question, Shugo noticed. The dead silence was a give away. Normally Shugo would automatically assume the worst and act accordingly. However this time it was his sister. The rules changed in his head. Instead of chalking it up to guilt Shugo instead linked it to pain. The way Mel acted afterward seemed to agree with his assumption. Shugo remembered when he was captured by the slavers. They put him through so much pain, both physically and emotionally. If she had experienced anything like that then he would understand why she would not want to think about it or even talk about it. Life was harsh, Shugo leaned that the hard way. Everything he cared for vanished and his world was shattered by the death of his parents. For a while he only had luna and now he had his Sister again. Though her words were opposite of everything he was ever taught.
"If I don't go into battle people will die", spoke Shugo in simple terms. The young rider knew that lives hung in the balance. He may be small and unimportant, but he was a good soldier. Shugo's spear had saved the lives of many men and women. He knew who he was and what he had to do. Mel was worried for him. He understood. Battle was not something one simply strolled through and had tea in the afternoon. Battle was the real deal. People die and once that happened it was all over.
"I understand that you are concern for me Sis, but If I don't fight other people will die. There will be another family killed off by bandits and another boy forced to grow up alone. I promised myself when I first took up the spear that I would do everything in my power to prevent that from happening.
The young Shugo began to by his time. He wanted to get a hold of his helm, but Mel had it firmly in her control. Even after she rolled it off her her arms were still close to it. For now the turtle was going to have to go without its shell.

"If you rush in face first you die, and that defeats the purpose if you want to fight for someone while missing a head." She scoffed, rubbing the surface of the helmet with her palm whilst she cast disapproving glances at Shugo. He was short, small, same as her as hard as it was to admit, same as their mother, and utterly nothing like the large man that was their father. Although, she had been a good deal smaller the last time that she had seen him, and it was hard to tell just how large he was now that he was permanently asleep in the ground. Was he?
"So when they died..." she murmured, broaching the topic that had suddenly grown heavy in her mind with a gentle touch as to not work him up in to a fit of tears once again. "Were they buried?" Mel's fingers ran through his hair, comforting him as she brought up vivid memories she assumed he wasn't interested in reliving. She tried to think up a story, one of the many that she had read over the years that he would not have heard in years. Heroic tales were the ones that she recalled he enjoyed the most, hanging in on the edge of his seat whilst she read them aloud.
"And sometimes it's better to take a step back instead of charging in headfirst, survey the situation, think, and stay a step ahead of your opponent. It's not a matter of staying out of fights, it's a matter of winning them." She paused, trying to put her point into a form that would be better understood by him. "Stories are not written about those who die first. They're written about the clever ones, the victors, the ones who thrive long enough to make their name known. Only then do people give half a crap about their death and start talking about them."

"But", spoke Shugo, but he stopped. Mel was right. He was getting a bit too bullheaded of late. He has suffered more injuries in the last month than he did a year ago when he first became a Wyvern Rider. In the beginning he let Luna do most of the heavy lifting. However of late Shugo has been pushing himself to try and take down enemies. As a result he has been scared and bruised all over. Shugo was no use to anybody if he was visiting the hospital all the time Still Shugo could not just leave the fight. He needed to fight. He had to fight. It was his only way for atoning for his parent's death and the death of the other villagers. If only he, no there was no point in thinking on the past. .
As Mel began to ask questions about there parents Shugo's heart began to sink. He wanted to avoid the topic, but he knew it had to come up in the conversation. Mel deserved to know. She needed to know. Shugo looked down at the dirt and watched as ants carried away pieces of a nearby bug. It was dead and the ants were picking away at its corpse.
"They died a year ago", spoke the boy as he relived the horrific day. "Both mom and dad were buried just outside of town. I made there headstone myself." Shugo's eyes were fixed on the dirt as Mel began to mess with his hair. The young rider ignored mel for a moment and lived in his memories from that day.
"I understand sister I wont get my head chopped off", spoke Shugo. "However I was never really taught how to access people. Most of the time my targets look like specks from up there in the sky. I never get a really good look on them. Most of the time we only look for axes and bows. Those are the two dangers of flrying.
It was then that Shugo gained a bright idea. "Hold on a second Mel could you teach me. Could you teach me to be tactical. "

"No?"
Mel looked at him oddly, a brow crooked while she chewed away on the inside of her cheek. Was he stupid? Then again he was still a child, not matter how much he might deny it if confronted with the horrible truth. "I won't teach you to be tactical because it's an utter waste of my time. You'll either ignore it entirely or focus on what I say so much you'll forget everything occurring around you." She let out a low grumble, reaching out to pull her pack closer to where they were seated so that she could paw through it. "It's nothing complex. You just have to think a little before you act. That's all I want you to do, just take a moment to breathe and look."
Mel paused for a moment, eyes flickering over to her pack as she withdrew a small bundle wrapped in a waxed cloth and tied with string. "You do understand that if you die before I do that I'll have to drag you back here just so I can pummel you good and proper for a lesson. And if you die stupidly I'll beat you even worse." She unwrapped the bundle while she spoke, revealing a rather fetching hunk of apple cake that wasn't too hard just yet.
"Now..."
She didn't want to share it, but she had a feeling the midget problem child had not many sweets as of late. There was little else for her to do but to break off a chunk and offer it to him, as painful as it was to do. There was always another unsuspecting cake for her to snatch off a windowsill, and Mel comforted herself with that thought.

The word no hit shugo like a dagger being plunged into his heart. You can see the tears and sadness piling up in his face as he attempted to understand Mel's answer. Lucky for her and Shugo's remaining reputation, Mel spoke afterward with a logical answer. If not Shugo probably had been really hurt by that one. "So watch instead of leaping", spoke Shugo as he took the information in. Someone had told him that before in the past, but... well he is Shugo. He pretty much threw it away into the things people say list. If somebody was going to die Shugo wanted to rescue them as soon as possible, but now. Well now he needed to think about his own life. It would do them, nor him any good if he ended up dead.
Suddenly Mel changed the conversation and brought out something Shugo had not seen in a long time, cake. The boy wonder had been eating mainly meat most of his trip. From time to time he would get some vegetables and bread, but never sweets. Cake and sweets cost extra at taverns and Shugo needed all the coin he had. The young rider had become quite frugle with his coins a trait that most youngsters his age did not have. Still he was happy to have something that did not taste like fire or dirt. Shugo reached his hand out and took the piece. The young boy gobbled it up in a single bite and simply let it sit in his mouth and enjoy the flavor, though it was a bit hard. For a moment Shugo sat there till he remembered he had something himself.
"Hold on a second", he spoke as he went into his bag and pulled out some strips of dried meat. "It is bear jerky", spoke Shugo as he offered Mel some. Shugo loved the taste of Bear, and so did luna. She did do most of the work after all. However Bear jerky would taste differently depending on the season your hunted them. This was the spring season and as a result the meat of the bears would be sweet from the berries.

"Mmm..." she shook her head at the offer of jerky, not wanting to take any of his supplies. It was more of a matter of pride on her part, she didn't need her younger brother's offerings. Like a parent turning down a taste of a child's candy, the child would enjoy it more after all. Mel had to be on the move soon enough and making a comfy little camp in Sacae with Shugo was not something she needed at the moment. Something was slowly rising up in the back of her mind and she wanted comforting solitude to combat it further.
However, she felt she had a slight duty to fulfill to her parents that forced her to stay in her brother's presence for a good while longer. "Where are you going from here?" she asked, once again turning over the helmet in her hands idly while she hid her expression. "Do you have the necessary provisions and navigation?" She bent forward and pressed her forehead to her knees, exhaling raggedly as she once again shoved down the thoughts that had risen. Not now. Not in front of him.
"I'll need to be on my way soon you understand, so if there's anything you need speak up now and I can take care of it." Monetarily of course, the only thing that she could do other than escort him personally to the nearest city. The latter was certainly not something that she could manage without a few hours to herself to reorganize her priorities. "So speak up."
