Name: Evelyn Bradford
Class: Shaman -> Seer
Age: 19
Born in: Delfia, Etruria
Appearance:
Evelyn has long, strawberry blonde hair that she wears in many different styles. Sometimes a loose ponytail, sometimes a well kept one, sometimes she leaves it straight. She often has her bangs on either side of her faced styles as ringlets when she's really trying to impress. Her eyes are hazel and she can often be seen smiling politely...or smirking rudely.
Physically Evelyn is quite womanly, a fact she uses to her advantage when the situation calls for it. She's not necessarily strong in terms of upper body strength though her legs have some strength to them thanks to her riding lessons. When it comes to combat she, of course, prefers magic which requires the mind more than the body. She stands at an average 5'6, though her heeled boots give her an extra inch or two in height.
She wears a variety of outfits depending on the situation. Her favourite one, which she only wears in cities, is a blue long-sleeved affair with a dress to match, white gloves and boots to go with it. However she also as a love for the colours purple and red, and will wear similar elegant clothing of these colours as well. If she's traveling far on foot she'll dress down, wearing a red coat over a white shirt, with a black knee-length skirt, black leggings, and brown leather boots and gloves.
Personality: As long as things are going according to plan, Evelyn's attitude is always graceful, never blaspheming and displaying a beauty similar to that of a swan. She can weave her way through conversations with practiced elegance and displays a higher level of education when she speaks. Evelyn prefers that most people see this side of her, as she was raised to behave as such in nearly any situation.
Of course, when with someone she's close with, alone, or if she's angered, this side of her personality cracks. Beneath that facade Evelyn's voice raises to loud volumes, her graceful expressions turn to less-than graceful frowns, and her shrewd, arrogant, bossy, perfectionistic tendencies can come to light. Even then both of these sides of her personality make up the entirety of the young noble, along with many other traits, but this particular rift in her personality is caused by the stress of her balancing her personal pleasures, her emotions, and her duties as a noble for the entirety of her life.
Evelyn is cunning and clever, able to survive and thrive in the political intrigue that surrounds Etruria. She will say that she follows the religion of her country, but only knows enough to pass off as an Eliminean. Evelyn prefers facts, science, and logic over faith anyday of the week. She can come off as haughty and cold, when she's not incensed, but despite it all she does mean well for anyone she cares about. It should be noted that Evelyn enjoys teasing others, playing with their emotions in a harmless manner, but she tends to take opponents more seriously. She especially enjoys teasing serious people and boys that she's come to crush on, as a distant method of flirting.
Evelyn greatly desires to bring the Bradford name into higher ranks among the Etrurian nobility, but also has many misgivings with the direction the country is taking. As the Bradford family is only up and coming, Evelyn does not tolerate excessive spending. However, she knows that such spending of money in meaningful ways is hugely beneficial. One subject Evelyn avoids discussing is the high possibility of a political marriage to raise her family's status. She has a high elitism attitude as a noble and has always seen others from above, but does try not to look down too hard on commoners.
Story: Born to a very minor noble house in Delfia, Evelyn was born just before the Bernese Civil War in 1276. She was the third child to her parents, Oswald and Amelia Bradford, and the younger sister to Malcolm Bradford, the eldest, and Francis Bradford, the second. As she was born in 1275 she doesn't much, if anything, about that particular incident in the history of her country's rival. She does, remember, her parents' joy when Kraft came to power
By the time Hargus' war had ended the Bradford was doing all they could to support Kraft. Oswald Bradford saw it as a way to raise the status of the family to higher nobility, a clever strategy from a shrewd man. Evelyn can remember the paranoia and fear of her fellow and rival noble houses as members of the nobility were killed one by one. Though she did not understand it at the time it became apparent to her later on that this fear came from the belief, perhpas even the fact, that Kraft was responsible for these deaths.
Evelyn was raised with the best tutors the Bradford family could afford. While Malcolm was sent to the church to become an acolyte and Francis groomed for both marriage and the military, both ways of appealing to the religious Kraft, Evelyn was to become a clever woman of nobility. Though honored and honestly happy that she was able to receive this higher education Evelyn soon learned that it was only so that she'd be clever enough to weave her way through the intrigue and politics of Etruria, and bring the Bradford family to higher status using similar sly tactics as her father.
The truth was that Evelyn didn't really mind. For better or worse she loved her family, though as her studies went on she became more and more disinterested with Eliminean, and she wanted to gain a better standing for her house. Being of only minor nobility, Evelyn was taught by her parents that it was only a fine line that separated them from the commonfolk.
By 1291, when Kraft had officially taken hold of most of Etruria, the ever support Bradford had managed to raise their status. Their wealth and influence increased, but only slightly. The sooner Malcolm could become an offical priest the sooner Francis could gain higher status in the military better, and those ambitions were the only thing that delayed Evelyn from being married off. Evelyn knew by this point that her parents did intend to find the best possible status marriage for her, and though she didn't like it, she knew the odds were she'd be forced to accept it as a reality. All for the family, right?
It was around this time that Evelyn started finding ways of being a little rebellious. She had to find some things to do that were hers and hers alone. She loved the Bradford family, but she wasn't just a Bradford: she was EVELYN.
One day, when she was 15 or so, she was taking a walk through Delfia and saw some of the locals practically hissing at an old lady who was passing through. Evelyn watched as they called the elderly woman a “witch” and a “hag”. She'd never seen the commonfolk so riled up, not since the beginning of Kraft's move for power at least. Curiosity fueled her to follow the old woman until they came to a rather desolate spot in the city.
Evelyn thought she was being quite stealthy and ambiguous when it came to following the woman, so she was stunned when the old lady stopped and called out her name. How the lady knew her name was beyond her, but Evelyn figured it wasn't so strange. The Bradford name was only growing, after all. If their name wasn't known to their own city then they were clearly failing in their efforts.
The old woman turned and gestured for Evelyn to come near, and once the younger girl did she asked why the commonfolk had called her a “witch”. The old lady pulled a book, a black, tattered old thing, and displayed to Evelyn just a small bit of dark magic. Evelyn, having never actually seen dark magic before, was stunned and intrigued by what she had witnessed.
Though she was further intrigued when the old lady told Evelyn that she had the gift for it as well.
Evelyn had to think rather swiftly what to make of that statement. If she did have a gift for dark magic then, to Evelyn, it would be a shame to waste a potential talent. However nearly all magic was frowned upon in Etruria, but none so much as “elder magic”. The zealots of the church would have Evelyn labelled a witch as well, and that would cause immeasurable problems for the Bradford.
“...Well you know what? For once, just once, screw the Bradford family name,” Evelyn thought. She practically demanded that the old witch help hone this apparent gift for elder magic. Amused more than anything else, the witch agreed. They would meet in different, abandonded areas a few times a week and Evelyn would study what she could on her own time. Though the tutelage added to her work load it actually relieved a lot of her stress, and she was quite proud of finding something she was this good at on her own.
This mentorship under the old witch lasted until Evelyn was about 18 years of age. When she went to meet her mentor one day she found no trace of her. A bit concerned she waited around their designated meeting area but to no avail. The next day she scoped out Delfia, hoping for a sign of her. There was none...it seemed the old witch had moved on, or passed on. Evelyn was saddened, to say the least, but was no less discouraged to continue her studies of elder magic.
In fact she felt she more driven than ever before. Evelyn was aware of the rumors that dark creatures had surfaced in Lycia, and she was also aware of the tensions all of Elibe faced now. Her father spoke of potential war with Ilia, who was struggling to contain the evergrowing Bernese Rebellion. Lycia was, again, beset by monsters, plagues, and bandits...
Evelyn offered her father a proposition. Since her education had finished and it would still be some time before the Bradfords found a husband for her, she offered to help increase the Bradford name outside of Delfia. She would travel throughout Etruria, throughout Elibe, and use what she had learned to gain the trust and thanks of nobility everywhere. All in the name of Elimine and Kraft, of course.
Oswald was reluctant. The proposition was a bit odd and he felt it was more than a little unnecessary, but his daughter was indeed of his seed, her careful and graceful words eventually winning him over. He gave her funds for travel and her own horse, though he insisted that she be careful.
The reality was Evelyn wanted to further practice her magic, and in order to do so she needed to get as far away from the eyes of Elimine as possible. She'd always be a Bradford, so before she was forced to a lifetime of politics and probable marriage, she wanted to live a little. Evelyn wanted to learn of this war ridden continent she was a part of, and make her mark on her own, separate from the ambitions of her family.
