Name: Samael
Class: Mercenary
Dragon Element:
Age: 23
Born in: Cornwell, Lycia
Appearance: Samael is a tall, sinewy man of 6'2". He has medium-length black hair that reaches just past the upturned collar of his tunic, piercing green eyes, and pale skin.
He typically wears a black tunic with crimson trim, dark grey pants, a white-and-crimson-dyed leather spaulder kept on his left shoulder by a strap going around his torso, and black leather boots.
Personality: The way Samael acts is very different from the way he feels. He comes across as cold, arrogant, and crass. However, this mostly an act he puts on to protect himself and he cares way more than he initially lets on. Deep down he is still mostly the street rat with a heart of gold he was growing up.
All of this isn't to say Samael is a nice guy through-and-through. Far from it. He doesn't deal well with people he considers to be beneath him, he's rather impatient, and he takes a worrying amount of joy in hurting and killing those he doesn't doesn't like.
Samael also has an independent streak a mile long and twice as deep. He doesn't like being told what to do and has a strong distrust of authority.
History: Samael doesn't remember his parents too well. The memories of them he does have are foggy and incomplete. He remembers his mother had dimples and his father had a baby face. He remembers that his mother was kind and that his was father serious. These and a few other scattered memories of his parents seem to all be from before he was 5. He doesn't know what happened to his parents after this and he doesn't particularly care at this point, it's in the distant past now.
Samael's first vivid memory is of the aftermath of stealing a loaf of bread from a baker. He had just gotten away and was beginning to tear into the bread when he was approached by the baker, an elderly man with a crooked nose and what appeared to be a permanent scowl on his face. The other street kids called him "Old Broken Snout" and were terrified of him. As soon as the old man got close Samael got up to run but the old man grabbed his wrist and stopped him with a quickness that an elderly man shouldn't have. The old man explained he didn't really care that Samael stole the loaf of bread as long as he promised he would share it and anything else he stole from the bakery with the other street rats. Samael promised and the old man let him go.
As Samael reached early adolescence, he started to take younger street kids under his wing and teaching them to take care of themselves and of each other. He wanted to give them something he never had, a family.
When Samael was about 14, he had a silent kid of about 5 join his little family. The other kids started calling the seemingly mute child Bear because of the stuffed bear he carried with him everywhere. On Bear's first heist with the group, in which they were stealing food from a mercenary company Bear got separated from everyone else and Samael went back for him. However, Bear had been captured by the mercenaries and was being held deep within the camp.
Samael knew he couldn't leave Bear to suffer for something the boy didn't really understand. So he marched into the camp and demanded to see the captain of the mercenary company. He explained what had happened to the captain and implored him to let Bear go and to punish the mastermind instead. The captain, named Basil, agreed on far less stringent term than Samael was expecting. Basil simply asked that Samael perform manual labor in the camp until he would have made the equivalent of what he had stolen.
Samael spent the next 10 days laboring for 18 hours a day, never once complaining about his circumstances and simply doing what was asked of him. This impressed Basil so much that he offered him a job as a mercenary, assuming he willing to put the work in to training.
Samael accepted and asked if he could go tell the kids he had taken under his wing. However, it was not to be as the company had just been hired and were leaving Cornwell that evening. So, Samael packed up his few belongings and left with the mercenary crew leaving the kids to fend for themselves.
After four years of brutal training, Samael was made a full member of Basil's company on what he had always celebrated as his birthday.
Samael served alongside Basil and his men for four more years before deciding to strike out on his own. Since then he has been wandering the land taking up odd jobs with the goal of finding one that will take him back to Cornwell, where he can be reunited with his family.
NPC fight: Samael rolled out of the way as the axe slammed into the ground where he had been only a second before. His opponent's massive arm muscles straightened for a moment before bending again as the brute pulled his axe out of the ground. Samael went in for a killing blow with his sword but misjudged the speed at which his opponent would turn and instead of slashing the brute's throat he sliced empty air. The thug brought his axe in an inward slash thinking he could catch Samael's back.
However, Samael was expecting something like this and spun to the side but he wasn't fast enough as the axe grazed his side. He hissed in pain and again went for his opponents exposed neck, this time striking true lopping the brute's head off.
PC fight: Samael drew his sword and held it steady ready to close the distance to his opponent and strike at any moment. After waiting a few moments, it became clear to Samael clear his opponent wouldn't make the first move. Closing the distance between the two of them Samael went with a few feints to test his opponent's reflexes before launching into a full-on offensive. He would take this other swordsman down whether they liked it or not.
