I don't think Rath knows Smaug's weakness. And how can a bird help? It can't talk so it can't learn Smaug's weakness and tell Rath.

In the Hobbit there werw birds that could talk but doubt Rath would understand it. He's toast.

Even then, Rath would have to be lucky enough for either him or the bird to notice Smaug's weakness, and make use of it, before being roasted.

And the bird would still have to be subjecteive to him. Birds don't serve just anyone.
