Selibas hit the ground hard. So this was going to be an endurance battle. Selibas got up slow. He raised his sword in a defensive stance.
He tried a quick move to the shoulder but then changed direction and slshed down. He missed by a long shot. Selibas tried to get in close to shove the man but he lost his balance and retreated a few steps.

Sabin saw the boy get up. Boy,that kid sure had determination. For a ovice like him to get up,that was something.
The boy tried to slash at sabin, but he was just too quick, and moved backwards from the slash, and wasting no time, axe and sword clashed together. Both were trying to overpower each other, and then Sabin just sidestepped. Due to tremendous pressure on his sword, the boy lunged forward and needed much time to recover. This was Sabin's chance. With all his might,he hit the boy's stomach with force with the blunt side and the boy,now suffering from severe pain, dropped his sword. It looked like Sabin had won this little spar.
Helping the boy up,sabin started massaging his stomach till the pain reduced a little. He said," Boy,you sure have lots of talent. I see great potential in you. For a novice like you to havegotten up from a blow to your kneethat sure is a sight to see. You have my compliments."

Reylan had watched the duel with great intent. Although Selibas had struggled, he wasn't too bad for a beginner. Reylan then acknowledged Sabin's victory. "That was good. You both are quite capable."
Reylan then turned his attention to Cebrail. "I'll be right back."
The young knight scurried over to his own tent and retrieved his slim lance. The bronze point was already dulling around its edges, and the shaft was starting to decay. Disgusted, he walked briskly over to a rounder tent, which housed the supplies guru.
"Ah, Reylan. Need anything?"
The guru's rough voice startled the young knight as he parted the cloth flaps of the tent. "Actually, yes. Do you have any spare lances I could use? This one isn't in very good shape."
The guru nodded. "I do have a few extra lances left. Wait one moment, I need to find them."
----
After a few minutes passed, the guru returned, carrying a handful of spare lances, most of them bronze or slim.
"This is what I could find. Are you interested in any of them?"
Reylan eyed each of them for a few moments, examining their shafts and tips in particular. However, none of them seemed to tickle his fancy.
"Sorry. These might not work for me. Do you have anything else?"
A strangled sigh escaped from the guru's lips.
"Well... there is one left. However, this one you'll have to pay for. It might suit your fighting style, though."
Reylan nodded. "I'd like to see it."
The guru reached under the main supply table, pulling out a long sheath.
"This one's made of iron. Excellent quality, too. I don't think it's even been touched. I'll give it to you for 300 gold. Custom price, just for you."
Reylan dug into his pockets and counted out exactly 300 gold pieces with his change. Although it was all the money he had at the moment, he didn't mind spending it so quickly.
The guru immediately handed over the sheathed lance. "Thank you kindly. If you want, I'll set aside your old lance."
As he turned to part the cloth flaps once more, Reylan nodded. "That's fine. Do what you want with it. I have no use for it anymore."
----
Upon bustling out into the afternoon sunshine once more, Reylan unsheathed his new lance. Just as the guru described it, the spear was of magnificent quality, with a sharp iron tip. Smiling at the craftsmanship, Reylan headed back towards the center of the camp, where Cebrail and the others were.

The green haired man complimented both of them. Sabin didnt really expect much from this, although the boy was an extraordinary novice, he was still just a novice. He wasnt a great match for sabin, and if this was how they would be doing trials with him, then things would seem much more boring.
Sabin wanted a real sparring partner. Not just a novice who'd swing his sword, but someone with skil. He enjoyed fighting, and all the more for a noble cause. Sabin was just itching for a spar with the green haired knight, but he said nothing. This was after all,not his army, but theirs. They would do the ordering and matching. not him.
Ater the green haired knight went away for a while,he turned to the other soldier, cebrail." So do I need to go through more trials?" Sabin was enthusiastic about a couple of more spars.

Reylan sighed heavily, sheathing his new lance. He didn't think that the fighter would need to prove himself anymore. Personally, the green-haired knight thought that he would be a great addition to the group.
Peering up at the sky, he noticed stormclouds rolling in from the north. At this rate, he guessed that Balthier's scouting team was already halfway to the Etrurian border. They were likely going to be hindered, but hopefully not so much that they're reduced to crawling the rest of the way.
Just as Reylan opened his mouth to speak to the fighter, a brilliant flash interrupted him, followed by a loud rumble. As the first drops of rain began to fall from the ominous sky, the young knight gave his unofficial orders.
"Everyone! Retreat to your tents! I'm quite confident that we're in for a thunderstorm."
Reylan turned towards his own tent, the quantity of the rainfall increasing steadily.

The green haired knight ordered everyone to go back to their tents. It started drizzling. Unfortunately Sabin had no tent to go to. It looked like he'd either have to stay in the rain,or follow him to his tent. The rain didnt really bother sabin,he was a pirate after all.
But he deicded to ask the man whether he was hired or not. He did want some money from this bargain. He could ask for probably a small amount of gold or something. He did need some money,he couldnt let his services come for free.
He said to the green knight- :" I'll follow you, young knight. Is it ok if we discuss my services in your tent?" This was rather a direct, but an effiient way,Sabin thought,t handle such things.

Reylan turned and noticed the fighter behind him. "That's fine. You may discuss your services with me. I'd like to hear what you have to offer. However, I'm afraid you can't sleep in this tent. I'm sharing it with somebody else. We do have a spare one."
Nodding, he beckoned the fighter into his tent.

Sabin followed him inside the tent. He started" Ok,before you get to know my offer I'd like to tell you a little about myself. My name is Sabin, pleased to make you acquaintance." Sabin smiled,in a sinister manner.
" Now I,was a pirate, until two years ago,and now I'm just leader of a group of sailors/mercenaries who just want to explore the world." Sabin paused. He needed to get to the point now.
" So I was in Badon for the past week or so,and then the bartender told me about you guys. I figured my past combat skills may prove worthy in your struggle and I could earn some money. I specialize in terrain combat, especially coastal/marine combat. The seas have toughened my body over the years. I also have m crew members who are skilled with axes, and some are skilled with the sword as well. We also own a ship and our crew is called 'The Emerald." I've got some lads in Badon who'll take care of the ship,so if you need an escape transport,my ship's there. I'm also very familiar with the Western Isles,my homeland,so if you need advice in future I can lend you a hand."
Sabin took a more interrogative tone now," Now you might ask,why do I wish to join you?Especially if I am an ex-pirate. Now as I've already said, I want to have a more adventerous and yet good life. I want to see the wole world. Ships can only take you far enough, but sometimes you need to go into big cities and see things. I want to leave back my corrupt old life and start a new one. "
" So how much are you willing to pay? I require a reasonable amount, not too high, nor too less. I need money to feed my men,and maintain my ship. Is 500 gold ok with you? Or maybe we can reduce it to 300? I dont know. Just that the more you pay,the longer I'll stay. Or we could do it mission by mission, this is your call though. You are,I guess, the leader of this army?"

Reylan listened intently to the ex-pirate's speech. As he finished, Reylan interjected.
"Hm... very interesting. It seems like you lead quite a busy life. You and me are alike in a lot of ways. We both want to see the world, as well as fight for what we believe in. Before we go over your payment options, I think it'd only be fair to explain my background."
The pirate apparently nodded, cueing the young knight to continue.
Reylan inhaled deeply, then spoke once again. "My name is Reylan, and I'm a cavalier from Ostia. I'm currently managing this small brigade, although I'm not an official commander. We were once managed by a captain, but he ended up betraying us. All of the soldiers here, excluding a couple, are Ostians. We fight for the same ethics. Anyway, our background is quite complicated, to say the least."
Reylan swallowed, then proceeded. "Tell me, have you ever heard of an organization called the Night Crawlers? According to a few civilians I spoke to a few weeks ago, they're a mercenary group. I suppose 'brigands' would be more appropriate. However, they wield swords."
As Sabin continued to listen to Reylan, the green-haired knight spoke once more. "We want nothing to do with those filthy sellswords. Instead, we're focusing on a different matter. We all want to fight Etruria and put an end to this war. Yesterday, I sent a few companions out to scout the Etrurian border, one of them a clever tactician and the others acquaintances of mine. They are due to return in a couple days to report their findings, but we haven't recieved any word of them. As for your payment, I'm afraid we don't have much to offer right now. However, we might be able to get more funds later on."
Reylan paused, waiting for the pirate to answer.

"I see. Well I think I'll take my payment once you get your funds. Until then,I'll be staying with your group. We look for more adventure than payment,I just need enough money to keep us all fed, that's all." Sabin winked. Reylan seemed to be an honest, good man.
" Tell me more about your misssion. What exactly did etruria do?What do people say about a certain 'prophet'? Also why are all of you away from Ostia? What has happened there?" Sabin had too many questions and they needed answers. He was new to all these things, since he used to be restricted to the wetern isles.

Reylan crept slightly closer to Sabin, indicating that the information he was about to share was somewhat confidential.
"Etruria and Lycia have been at war for quite some time now. I don't know how the conflict started, however. We're away from Ostia because we really have no use for that place right now. The city is rebuilding from the recent bandit attacks. I would help, but I think Etruria is a bigger threat to us. And this 'prophet'... I don't know very much about him. I'm even unsure of his name."
Reylan paused, then continued. "I'm truly grateful for your services. We'll need to look for more reinforcements later on, but for now, I think we can defend ourselves quite nicely."

Selibas led his horse to a hitch. He hitched on so he wouldn't wander. He remembered the man he bought it from saying it was a male horse just over a year old. He had also said the horse would be smaller than other horses. Selibas didn't want to bring another life into battle but he liked the little guy. He decided to keep him.
He walked through the supply tent and took an apple. Surely no one would mind. He got back to see the horse watching the lightning calmly. "Your going to need a name." Selibas said.
The horse looked up at him a few seconds before another bolt shone through the sky. Selibas smiled at his horse. His horse. "Come on Lightning lets see if we can't get a drink at he river." Getting a drink during a rainstorm slightly redundant Selibas thought.

" I see." Sabin said. Sabin and Reylan continued chatting for a while.

TIMESKIP!
After about half an hour, it stopped aining. Sabin decided to go back to Badon and get some of his men. He'd have to explain his new motives to them. Not all of them could come. This was going to be highly dangerous.
But he first had to inform Reylan. " I think I'm heading back to Badon to inform my crewmates about our mission. I'm not bringing all of them though, some of them must be there to look after the ship. If you need anything to be done at Badon, you can tell what to do. I'll see if I can help you."

Reylan nodded. "Very well. Bring your strongest, and need I say smartest, crew members. Be careful, though. I don't think this storm will be letting up anytime soon."
As Sabin left the encampment, the storm was still raging. Torrents of rain still soaked the ground, creating grimy puddles on the soft grass. Taking a seat on his makeshift bed, he began to think once again. This time, he contemplated the outcome of the brigade's strategy, and whether or not it would work.
Hopefully, Balthier's scouting mission would be successful.

As sabin started to walk away from the encampment, the storm resumed. Tough luck for Sabin, he would have to make his way back to Badon through this storm. But still, this wasnt as fierce as the storms of his younger days. And yet, he still was young, only twenty-three! It always amazed him how he became a pirate at the age of 23.
It took sabin about a couple of hours to make it,and finally, the skies were clearing. Hopefully this would be permanent.
Sabin made his way to the inn,and gathered all his mates at his room. He then said, quietly," My irreplacable crew mates. I think the time has finally come to split up. This may or may not be temporary, depending on whether I will make it back home safely, or not. "
Each one of them started getting the worried look on their faces. What was going to happen?
" I have been hired by a small Ostian Army to fight against Etruria. The pay may be big, and there's lot's of adventure in it. But, I cannot take all of you with me. Battling the Etrurians is no game. We need only the strongest and smartest of you coming in, for we cannot risk any of you dying. The next couple of minutes, I'm going to pick who's coming with me to fight. The rest must stay behind and look after Badon and our beautiful ship. You must promise me this."
Everyone nodded, the worried look still remaining on their faces.
" Edmund. Come 'ere. You have showed great progress and have saved me from danger many times. I want you to come with me.
Stanley, come with me, you have been clever in seeing traps on many occasions when we were searching for booty.
Germaine, you can come as well. You have been at my father's side, and you have helped me lead this crew extremely well. I am sure you will continue to do so, so I am requesting you to come and bttle. Your experience will be invaluable on the battlefield.
Mitch,Gloria,Dorothy and James, your skills have improved vastly over the years, and I see more potential in you. I would like you to come with me.
Sebastian and Mark, you know more about terrain combat, and you taught me the basics. Using terrain to your advantage is always a plus. Come along."
Sabin looked at the rest of them. About twenty of them were not just good enough to go on this mission. They would have to go on their own from here.
" Others... I am sorry for not picking you. You do know that this i for your own safety right? It would be nice if you could take care of the ship while we are away....... and find some small jobs in Badon,if you want more money. Wait till I come back. I cant promise if I'll come back aalive, but I will try my best to do so. For you guys."
The room was full of a gloomy emotion for sometime. Everyone were sad. It felt like they were saying their last goodbye. Like they'd never meet again.
But they had to do it. For the good of their crew..... and probably for Ostia.....
--------------------
TIMESKIP
Next day........
Sabin and his ten members came back to the encampment. Probably some sparring would be nice. He reported to Reylan," Why, Sir Reylan, I've brought my finest crewmates here. They will prove to be useful in future battles."
