the neck just looks short to me, and the edge of his left (stage left) cheek is off.

Yeah, I caught the cheek problem.
However, It's hard for me to see any problem with the neck, though it is what everyone who is critiquing it says is the problem. I actually made the neck a bit longer compared to the original picture of Echnida.
