OoC: Some time on the way to Edessa, after Lands of Ice and Snow, in Illia.
Clair kept up with the march. They'd been heading through the snows for quite a while now, but the heat generated by marching was still one of the better ways to avoid freezing. That's what they said anyway. It was still cold like the back of the sun here, but she'd gotten used to it for now.
All that trouble with the newcomers, and then some other things afterwards, like talking to Mavick, had distracted her from what she'd intended to do for quite a while now. This was to talk with Marcus.
The dragon, that's right, dragon had been in an incredible aerial duel with Kraft's High Commander Arriston. He'd probably been flying for decades, if not centuries. Dragons were said to live a very long time. While Clair herself was getting to be quite proficient, in the air, Marcus would probably be able to help her get even better. Then there was the fact that he was a dragon, and spending time around a dragon is something precious few people get to do.
"Marcus? I was wondering if you had a few moments to talk."

Marcus had been quietly walking a ways behind Richter thinking to himself about all that had happened. Perhaps Hassan had been right to lead away from his hut in Laus. Suddenly a voice pulled him out of his thoughts. He turned to find that the voice belonged to Wing Officer Feldsky.
"Sure, I've got a moment. What do you need, ma'am?"

"I saw part of your battle with Arriston. In the sky. The way you were diving and swooping, it made me think..." Clair's eyes trailed down, almost like she was embarrassed before they lifted back up to look the dragon in the face. "I wouldn't have survived up there. I was completely out classed."
While it was true she'd redoubled her flight training since then, she still wasn't sure she would have done well.

Marcus blushed at the compliment. "Well, thank you, Clair. I've had some practice. After all, living in a forest in Laus for five hundred years or so gave me plenty of time for practice, plus there is a major difference between flying cavalry and dragons. You see, while you may share a close bond with your Pegasus, you will never have direct control of it, nor will you ever be physically connected to it. Therefore, you won't be able to perform some of the maneuvers nor use some of the logic that I use. I could try to teach some of them though. Do you think you'd be up for it? It'll be hard and dangerous, but you could have the potential," Marcus concluded with a serious look.

"That would be great, Marcus. We'll just have to make sure to pick a good day for it. I can't put myself at needless risk, but if I could learn some of your maneuvers, then I have the responsibility to try."
As for pegasi, Clair had heard that some of their best knights had practically become one with their mounts, fighting and flying as one unit, with no failure of communication. Only the best had ever been said to reach that level though. Clair didn't really know how to go about reaching that level of communication yet.
What was more interesting at the moment, was the thought that she would likely be the first of the pegasus knights to receive aerial training from a dragon. Would there be secrets unlocked that no other illian knight had discovered before?
"You lived in Laus? Isn't that someplace in Lycia?"

"Ah, yes, I lived in Laus for quite some time it was a quiet area and near a sustainable source of food. You see, the forests of Laus contain a great number of bandit camps and I just find them delectable. You see, you would all that dirt and grime would make them taste awful, but it gives them a nice kick."

Clair didn't bother holding back a disgusted look. "Ehhew... That's horrible." Eating living, breathing, conscious people, even if they were criminals, was just plain wrong. Dragons may be different than humans, but there was no excuse for eating someone that had had dreams and plans, as far as Clair was concerned.
"Erm... How was Arriston?"

Marcus could feel the awkward tension growing between the two of them. In fact, he could almost hear Hassan calling him an idiot. Marcus swallowed and stuttered out, "Er, well he... he kinda tasted... I don't know... like... like... awful and um... putrid, I guess." Eager to change the subject Marcus looked around for a second then said, "So what about you? I mean um.... tell me about yourself."

She smirked a bit at his description of Arriston. Ok, maybe she didn't feel so bad about him eating that scumbag. "Now, I'm not sure if I'm getting the whole truth out of you anymore. Although I suppose Arriston was evil enough to warrant such a taste."
"About me?" Clair was a little surprised that he'd ask. She really adn't done... Ok, well actually, she'd been in some pretty major events over the last year.
"Oh, well, I grew up in Illia, my parents were both a part of the army there. After we finish basic training, pegasus knights go out and look for jobs to hone our skills. That led me to Sacae, where... well, a lot happened. The main thing is that Richter hired me on, and I've followed him ever since." There was a great deal more to her travels than that, but she didn't want to tell on and on about what they'd done if Marcus didn't want an earful. He'd been with them for a while now, so she'd trust him with the past.

"Really?" Marcus asked, "Sacae's where I joined on too. Although it was under radically different circumstances and I was still traveling with... Byron." At the thought of his former traveling companion, his eyes began to water, but he held back the tears and moved on. "And of course, you know the rest..." he said, trailing off.

"I remember. We were on our way back from Ostia." The memories in Ostia were some of the ones which troubled her the most. They'd arrived the day after the city was destroyed, blown from it's foundations. Then they'd come under attack from...No... I don't want to think about that. She pushed those memories away, though they still troubled her occasionally, as they had now. Marcus seemed troubled as well.
"Sometimes it seems like wars bring nothing but pain." It was quiet; a statement made between those who'd seen and experienced what conflict on the large scale brought.

Marcus nodded at Clair's comment. "Indeed. War brings naught but suffering and madness. And believe me, I know plenty of the latter. My life has been filled with it ever since my father..." Marcus began to trail off, now looking down at the ground.

Clair wanted to remind Marcus that not everything that war brought was evil. The war that she and Richter were fighting in was to bring down a tyrant, the Prophet. Marcus would be one of the first to agree that Kraft needed to be eliminated. It was the scum-ridden, puppetmaster of a prophet's troops that had imprisoned the Black Dragon. He had brought up something else though: His father.
"What was your father like?"

A fire almost literally began to burn in Marcus' eyes. "May father was... was... was... AGHHHHH!" Marcus shouted up a the sky. The mere memory of that... beast set his soul ablaze. In fact the hatred was so intense that some of the energy flowed out of him and into his dragon stone. His wings enlarged and burst through the fabric of his robe. His fingernails enlarged into claws. His eyes became entirely red and his muscles enlarged. His skin even turned a light gray. He stood there huffing in anger, until he saw the shocked look on Clair's face. He quickly pulled his anger back inside him and his features returned to normal. "Err, I, um..."he stammered, taking an awkward step back.

Clair was shocked when the transformations began to take place in Marcus. Shocked, and even a little afraid as she watched the dragon. She thought about hitting him over the head with her lance, reasonably sure that even a deranged, partially transformed dragon, as he appeared to look just then would stop if he fell unconscious. She had no need though. Nearly as quickly as it had begun, the changes faded. Marcus becoming just Marcus again.
He looked embarrassed, or disturbed. Only when she took a step back towards him again, a little cautiously, did she realize that she'd moved away at all.
"... It looks like there's more to being a dragon than what is seen at first glance.... Are you alright?"
