The Man from Nabata [ Sabin/Joel]

[Sabin]

OOC: Takes place in the ten day gap happening in 'Modes of Transportation.'

Sabin's time at the ship seemed to be pretty boring, actually almost eventless. He was happy with the food and all, being happy to once again taste the meat he loved. But there was less conversation on the ship, basically most of the people just liked whispering among themselves. Where was all the chatter? Sabin was never used to such a quite life, and being in a silent presence was a little unnerving for him.

Luckily he found Joel today. Joel was as usual, clutching the railing as always, looking at the deep blue sea. Sabin just didn't understand this guy. It was like, four days and Joel was STILL standing at the same spot, looking at the vastness of the sea. Getting excited was one thing, but this was overdoing it.

Sabin stared at the man's face- his skin was real tanned and he was huge, that wasn't really a big deal. But he noticed some sort of strange emotion in those eyes too. Sabin wondered if this man was used to drinking, he'd probably offer him a drink. Sabin was a teeny bit creeped out by Joel sometimes, the man didn't talk much. Perhaps someone needed to start a conversation with him. Sabin decided he'd offer him some rootbeer anyways.

"Hey Joel, I see you're back here again! How has the journey been? Its been pretty uneventful here, at least I feel so." Sabin said, hoping the man would say something.

"So, how's Nabata exactly? What's it like? I've always wondered how you landlubbers end'n up livn' in the desert, its pretty hot down there." Sabin said, resisting the urge to offer Joel rootbeer.

[Joel]

Joel watched as the water once again took on it's usual properties as Sabin's voice drew him out of his thinking. "Ah, you get used to it." Joel rumbled, not looking over at Sabin as he spoke. "The desert and the ocean are quite similar, if you think about it. Not a drop to drink for miles, and it can be either blisteringly hot or freezing cold." The large man sighed, and turned around. "I haven't been there in years... I miss that place." Joel shook his head suddenly, and then turned to face Sabin. "I'm sorry, I've... Just..." He sighed, and then rolled his shoulders. 

"So how about you? I've been all over and I can't really seem to peg you." Joel asked. He actually was curious, and what he said was true. He could typically at least guess where someone was from, but Sabin looked like he could be from Etruria, maybe southern Ilia. Bern, possibly. 

[Sabin]

"Me? I'm from the Western Isles. I used to be a pirate who went after treasure... then I learnt to men' my ways and decided ter become an explorer. I guess you could say that's how I end'd up in Bern." Sabin said, chuckling to himself.

"Those were the fun days. Drinkin' to glory, singing pire'et songs. 'YO HO HO n' a BOTTLE OF RUM' was the classic tune. I met a munk in one of my travels, n' decided ter quit my ol' life n' start a new 'un." Sabin said

"Speaking of which, you should probably try some rootbeer.Want some?" Sabin asked, offering his bottle of rootbeer. He couldn't esist any longer.

[Joel]

Joel chuckled, shaking his head. "I think I'll have to pass." he said, smiling. "I had something to drink just a little bit ago. And I do know the importance of staying hydrated out here." The Nabataean turned to stare at Sabin, looking long and hard at the ex-pirate. "Now, did you need something, or did you just want to offer me some rootbeer?"

"Well I did come here to offer you some rootbeer. And there's not much to do here other than chi-chat, I'd rather strike a conversation with you." Sabin said, smiling.

"Are you travelling only recently? Do you have some goals you want to acheive? Its pretty fun to do so, actually, you get lots of thrill along the way." he said.

[Joel]

Joel chuckled at Sabin's question, remembering the days leading up to the present. Days of traveling, prayer, and hard work. "If only that were the case, Sabin, if only. No, I've been traveling the land a good few years now... But I must say, I haven't really done it with a group too often before. In fact, the last time I traveled with a group anywhere near this size was..." The giant of a man stopped suddenly, thinking about his forced bandit days. He had to admit, despite everything bad about bandits, the commonplace misery and misfortune brought them together in a certain brotherhood. It might not have been as nice as what the group he was currently with maybe had, but it was better than most people realized. Fireside songs, homecooked meals by a surprisingly decent chef... Joel just wished that the bad hadn't outweighed the good so much. They had killed the only relative he ever knew, raped woman, killed children, razed towns... Still, some of them had been decent people.

"And you, Sabin? How long have you been out and about wandering the world?"
