(OoC: This topic takes place at a different time than Laid to Rest, although they are in the same place. I plan on keeping this solo so that this doesn't cause confusion, but anyone can join by PMing me first.)
Ralph had been walking straight since he left the burning village behind. Caecus had no troubles remembering the way to this place, the City of Heroes. Ralph had trouble smelling anything beyond the ash that still clung to his clothing. He'd need a new change of clothes soon, or at least a quick bath.
Ralph walked around aimlessly, since Caecus was waiting outside the City as he often did. Although the man with the long name had called him here, he had no directions beyond Caecus getting there. "Ah, Ralph, there you are."
It was one of the Kara brothers, Ralph was finally able to recognize his voice, even though it was deep in his past. [red]"Mr. Dirk, it's been a while hasn't it?"[/red]
"Indeed." he said in his gruff, monotonous voice. The Stone-faced Sacean himself. Although Ralph couldn't really see Dirk's stone-face, he assumed it was the same as when they met many years ago. "Dave is in his quarters, he's the one who sent you the letter." Ralph was kinda amazed by how Dirk's voice never stuttered or changed pitch, as if the man himself had no emotion.
The nomad led Ralph through a beaded door into a small room. The shuffling of many pieces of paper could be heard as Ralph walked forward. "Ralph is here, brother. I will wait outside."
"Ah, Ralph come in, come in. Ignore the papers scattered across the floor." came the voice from within. As Ralph stepped closer, he found what Dave was talking about. His boots crunched on the ground as he stepped on the paper strewn across the floor that he was unable to see.
In voice, Dave sounded much more light-hearted than his brother. As if he was constantly smiling almost. "I see that your falcon was able to find you easily. I had feared that he might have been away from you for too long, but you're alright. Would you like some tea?" Dave spoke quickly, changing topics on a dime.
[red]"Um, alright..."[/red] replied Ralph, who then had a cup of tea thrust into his hand. "Nothing like tea to help a grown man after a long journey if you ask me. Did you enjoy the trek across the plains? I didn't think you would want to go through Bern."
[red]"Yeah."[/red] Ralph was barely able to get a word in between Dave's questions. "The plains are great, aren't they? A much more peaceful journey after that trouble you had in Ostia. Tell me, did you fight any demons there?"
[red]"How did you know about that?"[/red] Ralph had gone to Ostia almost on a whim and barely escaped with his life. As far as he knew, only three people knew he had been in Ostia.
"Oh, I've got sources. I didn't know that you were in Ostia, but you would have had to go through it to get around the mountains north of Lycia. What kind of demons were they?" The shuffling of paper continued, almost as if Dave was reading the papers littering his tent while asking these questions.
[red]"I'm not exactly sure. I was too busy fighting to think about what they sounded like. Sure smelled foul though."[/red]
"Ah yes, you're blind. I almost forgot. You're probably wondering about all these papers." he said, still shuffling them. "I'm a collector of information. I receive letters from people all over Elibe about all kinds of subjects. For the right price, I could tell one anything from a fantastic recipe for Shepard's Pie to say... cures for blindness."
Ralph burst out immediately, [red]"You know how I can regain my sight?! I'll do anything, please!"[/red] his hands slammed down on Dave's desk, knocking some papers over.
"Exciteable young man, aren't you?" Ralph could tell that he was still grinning, just from his voice. "Any price you say? Then I want you to go into Bern. Steal the Fire Emblem, it's the symbol of the country." he said, still in the same sing-song voice. "Also the most highly-guarded and priceless relic in all of Elibe. That seems an appropriate price for this information. It was extremely hard to get."
Ralph was completely stunned. Of course he knew of the Fire Emblem, no man or woman from Bern worth his/her salt didn't know about it. But was it worth the risk just to regain his own sight? Not to mention the nightmares that came to him whenever he approached Bern. [red]"I... I need to think about it..."[/red]
