The large man looked over to his axe, a few feet away: too far for him to reach. He looked back up to the figure in front of him, bathed in the darkness. Her blue eyes glowed faintly in the night, and then, he knew, continuing to stare down at him unseeing, as she worked her horrid magic; it spun around her hands, darker than any moonless night. The same magic which had killed five of his... Well, what had they been? In hindsight, they had been his friends, or the closest things he had ever actually had to friends... "Would you really kill a---" the bandit began, attempting to lift himself up, but then the dark magic entered his body, and he screamed as it killed him painstakingly slowly.
"The answer to that question is a resounding yes. Shocking, isn't it?" the shaman whispered, and then stopped the magic. She looked at her gloved hands for a moment, and then shrugged, allowing the shrug to take her into a slumped position for a moment. And then the pair of green eyes illuminated the night, and she stood straight once again. "Good to see you took care of yourself, Solly. Is Calvin around here? Or did he get unlucky for once and get his organs ripped out while my back was turned?" she said softly to the feline, who just padded off. Isabel allowed her gaze to follow the cat's path, and then she raised her voice. "Come on out, Calvin! They aren't trying to decapitate us any more!"

It was late. The darkness abyss that is night enshrouded the roads. The moon shone, illuminating the starless sky, the only source of light on this eerie night. So much had happened since Valorian and Jya left them. Even thinking about it brought tears to Calvin’s eyes. Why did their friends leave, all of them gone! They just upped and left and now, well now it was just he and Isabel. Just like old times, but not at all… things were different now. Isabel was different. She and Calvin had gotten involved with bandits recently and they’ve really been fighting for a while now, just travelling and fighting, doing their best to protect themselves, and anyone else who needed it. Although Isabel was the one who did all the fighting… she had grown stronger with her dark magic, it was somewhat unsettling. She seemed to have a somewhat different attitude aswell. Calvin sat perched on the tree branch, hidden within the leaves and the night. He let his legs hang off the edge as he thought about Isabel. He stared down at the fight with a frown on his face as he watched the dark magic consume the bandit. Isabel was different but, she was Calvin’s best and only friend. No matter what the situation was, no matter whatever the hell it was Calvin would always stick with Isabel. She’d always protect him. They were best friends. Once again a childish smile spread across Calvin’s lips as he leaped down from the treetop.
“Hurray! You did again Izzy! You really are a prodigy, you’ve gotten so strong!”
He nodded politely at her and grinned, spinning around on the spot as he pulled out the whistle and played a peppy second long tune.
“I searched the area! There are no sight of bandits coming any time soon, let’s take a break and travel more tomorrow!”

"Perhaps you are up for a short rest, but I'm beat. I'm thinking at least eight hours of sleep tonight... You're free to stay up with Solomon, of course." Isabel said, sighing as she removed her gloves, revealing her white skin underneath. She rubbed her hands together, wishing for a brief moment that she had instead been like her brother and developed a knack for anima magic; she could have lit a fire so easily. But she hadn't, and that was just all right... But she really was cold. Not just on the outside; her chill went to the core. She wouldn't complain though. She hadn't yet, and the shaman had been feeling this way for, oh... A while now. Isabel had lost count of the days, the weeks... It couldn't have been months though, could it? She supposed it could have been. She wasn't keeping track any more.
"Calvin, you know what. I take that back. I'm suddenly not sleepy any more." the sapphire-haired girl said softly. This wasn't really shocking though; she had been operating on a few hours rest for the past... Timeframe... "Maybe I'll go to bed soon. Maybe." She sighed, and then put her dark blue gloves back on, sitting down against the tree and tugging her legs in tight to her body. She felt Solomon pad himself over, and then curl up at her side. The shaman sighed, and allowed herself to pat his head a few times before retracting her hand back to it's spot holding her legs.
"So, Calvin, do you still have any energy left in you? No offense to Solly, but I'm going to get bored really quickly."

Calvin looked at Isabel. She was right, she needed a real night’s sleep, a proper rest. She had rarely slept since they left and she’d always had to fight for Calvin. Surely they were safe enough to take a day’s break or so. He nodded and bent down gently stroking the head of Solomon. Being here with Isabel was fun but… his home. How long had he left?! He almost had enough money to save the farm but, how would he send it home? It was too dangerous with all these bandits, he’d have to do it personally but… Did he have the time to earn the remaining money AND make it home? He worried not. He opened the flap of his bag and peered inside. This red gem, it was rare, surely it would sell for a lot. He had it for a while, but was he really going to have to get rid of it? Maybe… Then his eyes fixed onto something else. His sketch book! How long has it been since he took out that old thing… weeks? He smiled sweetly, he didn’t have the heart to look at it right now. It was full of pictures of his own friends, the ones that left. He quickly closed the bag and turned back to his friend Isabel. She wasn’t sleepy? She should really take a break but, alright, Calvin was in a friendly mood. He smiled and nodded. He made his way over and sat down in front of Isabel
“Are you kidding, you’ve been doing all the fighting! I try to help but it’s you who does all the really hard work!”
Calvin had plenty of energy in him as always. Even when travelling with Isabel he found that he actually had no free time.

Isabel shrugged, neither agreeing or denying what he said. "So, Calvin... Lovely evening, isn't it? Loving the lack of warmth and moths." The shaman smiled, and then looked over at Calvin. "You don't happen to have a lantern and a match or something, do you? I don't really like moths, but light and warmth of any kind would be nice." She sat there for a moment, tapping her knees, thinking of anything to say. She usually just sat by herself in the evenings... Unless you counted Solomon. She did, sometimes. This whole twilight discussion was something she was not used to.
"... So, Calvin. I vaguely recall you saying something to the effect of working on a special little song, just for me? How is that coming? Alternatively, how do you think Jya and Valorian and Valcrist and Tara and even Rayl are doing?" Okay, so maybe she wasn't too bad at shooting the breeze while being exhausted.

“…It’s nice…”
Calvin spoke with little enthusiasm. Nights like this were peaceful, they reminded him of home. This adventure was… a whole new experience. At first it was just a fun sightseeing experience but now, it’s more than that. He had important friends! He reached into his bag and pulled out a lantern placing it on the ground between them and turning it on.
Thanks Tara…
It was Tara who taught Calvin how to prepare for long journeys. It is true that ever since it was just him and Isabel he had learned a few things about adventuring. However he still owed a thank you to Tara. A smile perked back on the youths lips.
“Whaaat! How did you know it was a song, I thought I was keeping that secret quite well!”
He pouted. He wanted to surprise Isabel, music had made everything better, it always helped him relax. Somehow he felt that if he played this song… things would be like they used to be! Calvin frowned.
“….I miss our friends… I MISS THEM SO MUCH ISABEL! I hope their ok and I hope, no I KNOW someday we’ll see them again!”
His eyes began to tear up a little but not too much. He pulled out his flute and gently he began to play a soft tune. It was deep, and it sounded hollow. It was clearly a low, sad song. It wasn’t the song he had been working on rather, one to express his mood. After playing he put away the whistle.
“That’s not your song by the way!”
Calvin buried his head in his knees. What was he doing! He was just being silly, Isabel was strong, he should be strong too! He still had friends; they just were apart for the first time. He had Isabel! Maybe it was better than he realized, he got to travel and grow stronger with Isabel.
“Hehe, I can’t wait till we get travelling again tomorrow! Those bandits don’t stand a chance against us!”
He anxiously leaped off the floor and pulled his bag up off the ground. He pulled out his sketch pad without thinking. Today was a new adventure for the two of them, it had to be noted!
“Remember when we first met with Tirion! When we were supposed to help save that town or something but then we got separated! I wonder how they’re doing right about now! THEN we travelled and we got in that fight OH AND WE MET TARA AND JYA! Then we met Val and Rayl and we got caught up in another adventure, and we found that fire emblem thingy in that castle! Then we got separated again and… well here we are.”
As Calvin spoke he flipped through the pages of the sketch book, showing them to Isabel as if telling a story.
“We’ve been on lots of adventures and many different things have happened! No matter what happens, or where our roads lead we always end up together! That’s why you’re my best friend, and that’s why I love travelling with you! Tonight is an important night. You’ve gotten stronger and, well we’ve fought a lot of bad guys! I think that this is the start of our next adventure! THERE FORE! IT MUST BE MARKED!”
He fell back to the floor and anxiously began scribbling away.

Isabel didn't turn her head to face her enthusiastic traveling partner, but, rather, just glanced over at his vague features lit by the lantern. "Calvin, would you mind... You know... Keeping your voice down? If there are any other bandits nearby... Or even within a mile of us, they'd hear you." she said quietly, emphasizing her point to stay quiet. The shaman sighed, and leaned back against the tree once again. "Now then... How did I know it was a song? Well, let's be honest Calvin. You are no weapon smith, no scribe of tomes of magic. You draw and play music. And let's face it, if it was a drawing, you'd probably be done already." The blue-haired girl motioned loosely towards his drawing with her left hand, and then the hand dropped down to Solomon's head.
"Calvin... People die. If we are lucky, our friends will be smart enough to hang onto life long enough for us to see them long enough, but who knows? Death and life are fickle things... And we seem to walk the line between them constantly these days, don't we?" Isabel shrugged, and then fell silent for a few minutes, listening as Calvin's tools worked their own magic. She thought about the situation, and just how strange it was. Here she was, eighteen years old and capable of calling upon magic capable of ending lives. Her travelling partner... Oh, screw that. He was her best friend. Anywho, her best friend was a little younger than that, even if he didn't act his age pretty much ever, and he made stuff. She destroyed, he created. A funny little balance...
"Hey, Calvin... What would you do if I di---" she stopped herself from finishing that, biting her tongue for a moment. "If I was seriously injured? Beyond your ability to help me? Would you look after Solomon? Would you seek out Jya, or Rayl, or... Valcrist?" She might not be honest with anyone else on the matter, but she did find that Nabataean boy a little on the, well... She... Yeah. "I won't always be around to protect you, after all. And it is good to have plans for such unfavorable possibilities."

Calvin sketched away enthusiastically. His only form of light was the dim flicker from the lantern. He didn’t worry about being too loud, he had searched the areas, and the bandits were gone for now. Although that doesn’t mean they’re not in danger. There could be wild animals or maybe a bandit he missed in the darkness of the night. Either way he lowered his voice a little bit. He didn’t want to get in any more trouble and have Isabel fight again. Calvin half listened to Isabel explain as he sketched away. She had a point; all he did was play and draw, and that made the options a little thin. He perked his head a little as the topic changed to something somewhat more serious.
People die… It was true, Calvin had experienced quite a lot of this since the start of his journey. It still brought sorrow to his feeble heart as he thought about killing others. Still, he had less pity on bandits, especially when they were chasing them! Calvin didn’t speak, rather offering Isabel a humble nod of agreement. Silence returned once again and Calvin continued sketching away. Sometimes silence was nice, just to be in the presence of a friend was good even if they were silent.
After hearing his name again his head lifted curiously once more. What if Isabel was injured? No that wouldn’t happen, Isabel was strong, she’d always protect him. What IF Isabel got injured? Oh my god What if Isabel died! Noooo! That won’t happen that can’t ever happen! Calvin would never let that happen to Isabel… Otherwise… what would happen?
“Of course, I’d look after Solomon! But, you won’t get injured, because that can’t happen! I’ll just improve my abilities so I can ALWAYS help! If it was all up to me… I don’t know what I’d do. I… I’ll always do whatever I can to save you! I’d get help by whatever means necessary! I’d look for Val and I’d look for Jya and Reylan and Tirion and Kelvin and Chelsea and Valcrist and Tara! I’d look for anyone who can help!”

"Calvin, I know you have full faith in my abilities, but listen to reason, not just your ideas about how the world works. I can and will die eventually, as will you, and Jya, and Valorian, and probably even Solomon." As she said that last one, she glanced down at the cat, who was quietly sleeping the dim light of the lantern. Cats were sort of unnatural, though... Maybe they never really died? It wouldn't surprise her; weirder things had happened. "If you were hurt, Calvin, I swear I would do whatever is in my power to either, a, help you, or, if that is no longer an option, get revenge. Because... You are my best friend, you know..." A soft hiss was heard from Solomon, and the shaman just smiled weakly as she patted him. "Oh, come off that Solly. You're my bud too."
Another minute of no talk, only Calvin's scrawling, was had, broken only by Isabel yawning for a second. "I wish we could have followed Valcrist." she said, really just to herself, before realizing it was out loud. Blast, she really wasn't used to Calvin staying up with her. "Or Valorian, or Tara, or Chelsea, either, I mean. I really do wonder how Chelsea and Kelvin are getting along... Heck, I wonder when their wedding is. I wonder if Valorian has talked to Jya about his... You know... Feelings for her... I wonder if Valcrist is freezing like a little popsicle... Has Rayl ridden off into the sunset? Has Tara found new people to protect her from those bounty hunter guys? I guess what I'm saying is... I regret leaving them behind, Calvin."

Calvin frowned. It might be true that everyone would die but that didn’t mean they had to talk about it. Calvin tucked himself into his knees as Isabel spoke. His frowned perked into a somewhat embarrassed smile.
“Thank you! You’re my best friend too!”
Calvin returned to scribbling away. The picture was coming along nicely but it took a long time to actually finish one of them. His head curiously looked back up again when she spoke about Valcrist and the others. Of course he was too oblivious to take any sort of meaning behind Isabel’s words. He just thought she missed their friends. So did he…. He sure did hope they were safe. Calvin thought to himself, they can’t worry about what happened before, it was distracting. Still they couldn’t just leave the topic on a sad note.
“…I don’t.”
He looked down to the floor for a moment before raising his head once again.
“I miss them, I miss them a lot! But we have each other we shouldn’t regret the choices we’ve made! What would our friends think! Val and Jya, they left us, because that was what they had to do! Chelsea and Kelvin are getting married! Valcrist, he ahs a scarf, he’ll be fine! He’s with that green haired girl he talked about! Tara… Tara is like my big sister, there’s no way she’s in any danger! We all split up for different reasons Izzy, it had to be done! We all have different things to accomplish, as friends we, we have to accept that! We have to hope, or rather believe that we’ll all see each other again one day! That’s why having friends is so great, even when your apart your friends will support you! That’s why, that’s why friendship is so important! Friendship is… magic!”
He smiled childishly and flipped the sketch pad to Isabel. The picture showed the two of them talking by the light of the lantern, with a very slight smile and a happy face.
“The others all have goals! Isabel we have to accomplish ours too! Let’s keep travelling together, and get stronger, and make even more friends!”

Isabel stared at Calvin's drawing for a minute, thinking about what he said. Ah, it would indeed be grand to go through life like he did... And, again with the humor. Here she was, the actual wielded of arcane power and somehow the realist of the pair. Go figure. The shaman couldn't help but wonder how things might have turned out if the group had somehow stayed together... Or, even, if they pair had stayed with Tirion. Perhaps they could have freed that city of his, or maybe it would have ended horribly? Calvin could have died, or perhaps her... Or maybe the two would have been forced to separate from the group before the battle even started, like Valorian had done to them. Isabel had been quite looking forward to how Jya and Valorian's relationship went, but those two were lost to the winds now, and the likelihood of finding them again in the near future was slim-to-none.
Perhaps if they had gone with Valcrist and that girl he had been traveling with... Perhaps she could have gotten that boy some grace, or taught him to be less of a klutz... Or maybe, just maybe, things would have worked out perfectly for once. Or maybe that girl he was travelling with had been more than just a friend?
What if they had gone with Chelsea and Kelvin? They hadn't been close friends; they had just met, after all! But one could wonder... Would Calvin and herself be allowed to attend their wedding? Or would they just get caught up in another fight they were too weak, too young for?
"Calvin. You should go to bed." Isabel said suddenly and sternly, as she stood up. "We've got a big day ahead of us, after all." The shaman rubbed her gloved hands together, and then took a few steps away from the tree before stopping. "Calv... You're an optimist. You always see the world in a brighter light. Anyone else, I'd crush that in... But for you? It's part of who you are. Don't loose that, okay? Promise me that you'll always stay optimistic."

Calvin continued smiling pleasantly at his friend Isabel. During his travels, all his adventures, they all had something in common: Isabel was always with him. Calvin didn’t regret any of the decisions he had made so far and while some of them had sad results, he’d do the same thing all over again. Why? For his friends of course! Calvin was only beginning his adventure, he still had so much more to experience, and so many more friends to make! There were sure to be some hardships along the way but as long as he had his friends, as long as he had Isabel, he’d never look back!
Isabel spoke once again. Bed? Well they could use some rest after all, and she seemed pretty stern on the matter. Calvin just nodded in response. It seemed like they had a lot of big days recently, ever since the bandits. He looked at Isabel a little confused. She had a different tone of voice, somewhat more serious, concerned. What was she talking about, why did she bring that up? Calvin wondered what the point of it was, but he was just and oblivious youth, he had no idea how some people were affected by the world. He just smiled sweetly at what he thought to be compliments.
“I promise!”
He spoke enthusiastically with a large smile on his face. As long as he had his friends he’d always see good in the world. That’s all he cared about. Out of his mindset however, if he were to somehow loose his friends, it would become increasingly difficult to stay so optimistic, even for Calvin. Friends were everything, and losing his friends, meant he’d lose everything. He didn’t think about that when making the promise.
“Good Night Isabel!”
