Alt of Wyatt. Character total is 3 (Wyatt, Selena, Aerious) since Valorian has maybe two posts until he is retired.
Name: Selena Aegis
Class: Mercenary
Hair Color: Green
Eye Color: Green
Age: 20
Appearance: Relatively tall for a woman, she cuts a fairly built figure at 5' 10" with more muscles then one would expect from the daughter of a cobbler. She wears a dark blue set of armor, simple but effective in design. The majority of her protection comes from leather under armor, but the big pieces are solid Lycian Steel, the usual set for a low ranking member of the military. The set is made up of two arm guards, a set of greaves, and a simple breastplate with the waist armor. She has dark green hair that runs to just below her shoulders, but is usually kept neatly restrained to keep it from being a hazard in combat.
Born in: Laus, Lycia.
Story:
Selena was born in the capital of Laus, living in plain view of the castle every waking day or her life. But she was not nobility, she was not a soldier, she was not even a wealthy merchant. Her family, her father specifically, were cobblers by trade. An unglamorous profession, but it needed to be done. Selena never knew her mother, because she had died during childbirth. Her father, being the fine man he was, worked to support his only child, and for the most part, her life was happy.
Even as a child, Selena was wise beyond her years. She saw her father setting up an unofficial arranged marriage, at least what peasants could manage. The job of a cobbler was a man's job, and he had no son, similarly, the seamstress of the area had no daughter, and so the children learned the trade of their neighbors family. That son, named Julian, he was not a bad man. Kind, considerate, fairly intelligent, but the idea of living her entire life simply working did not sit well with the young girl.
When she was sixteen, approaching the age where marriage would be considered, she made her announcement to her father. That she was going to enlist in the Laus army. She had prepared a great speech, many reasons why she was going to do it, fully expecting him to reject the idea as too dangerous and foolish for his only daughter. It was too her great surprise when he nodded in agreement after her declaration, and retrieved something from a locked chest of her mother's old gear. A small buckler, with a single blade tucked into it's arm strap.
Her father explained to her then and there, that her mother was not a common peasant like he was. She had fought in many battles in the past as an Ilian mercenary. One day, this journey led her to a small village in the south, where brigands had invaded. Normally she could have defeated them easily, but with the townspeople as hostages, she was forced to surrender. He recalled how the men had beat her. With clubs, or rocks, or their fists if they could find nothing else. Before they could kill her, or worse, the Royal Knights arrived, and routed the bandits to a man.
Humiliated and broken, she was relocated with the villagers to the capital, since their town was destroyed. Lacking a healer for the long trip was uncomfortable for most, but she would find it life changing. By the time they had reached a healer in Laus, the damage had been done. Her arm had healed poorly, she could never use her left hand for combat again. A swordsman without her shield, she knew that her days of fighting were over.
For a time, she lost herself in despair, when one of the men she'd saved, a lowly cobbler, came to visit her. He'd heard her story, and thanked her for giving up her own life to save their meager lives. Hearing the man say this simple line, reminded her of the simple truth of it all. Her life as a warrior was done, but her life still continued. For a time, she trained Laus warriors in sword play. She stayed in the capital, not letting her new disability dissuade her any longer.
Her father said the story could continue much longer, but the important parts were already said. Selena was the daughter of a great warrior, and so it was in her blood to want to continue it, even having never known her mother.
She enlisted as a squire at the age of sixteen, and spent two long years in training. Being belittled, looked down upon, physically tormented, and many other things one would expect a woman in the military to experience. Her instructors seemed to hold her to higher expectations, perhaps some of them knew who she was, perhaps they were just trying to make her quit. Never the less, she was the first of her group to be knighted, her own weapon drill impressing the Marquis to such an extent that he stood to comment on it personally. As is a Lycian custom for peasant soldiers, she was given a surname upon being knighted. She chose the name Aegis, as a mark of the steel defense she had become famous in the barracks for.
From there, she went off almost instantly to be part of the scouting force investigating the fall of Ostia. They were expecting Etruian resistance, or perhaps an ambush. What they were not expecting were the monstrosities they found. Ravenous and diseased dogs, walking corpses, things of nightmares made real. The fight began in chaos, with the abominations pouring out of every corner and shadow. In her panicked state, she tripped on a tree root in the forest, and cracked her head on the trunk of the mighty giant. When she awoke, all was quiet. Monster and human corpses littered the forest, and she would not deny relinquishing all food she had consumed for the last day at the sight of it. She found no living soul as she made the long return trip to the capital. Trudging along like a walking corpse herself, she could only remind herself of her failure. She'd wanted to be the shield, the protector, like the name that had been given her. Instead she had failed, and everyone else had died for it.
When she returned to Laus finally, she was shocked with what she found. They were sealing off the castle, keeping the troops all inside the capital area. The rest of the land was being left to rot, or worse. Wasn't the Marquis supposed to protect those people in times of trouble? Was that not the unspoken agreement between nobility and peasantry?
Disgusted with the outcome, Selena deserted the Laus army and never looked back. She has joined up with a group of mercenaries taking on jobs to try and clean up the Lycian areas, since the Marquis of most nations were all too content to hide in their castles.
It is two years later at present. Selena still looks for some way to make a bigger impact on this land then simply cleaning up messes, and is concerned that she will never find a better purpose for herself in this ruined hell.
