Story:
Jace was born in Lycia, where he raised most of his childhood. But he wasn’t like all the others kids. He was a bit different in the way where, when they played games he would rather watch the older men practice their sword skills. The kids teased him about it, but he didn’t mind. Around the age of seven is when he first tried to pick up a spear and shield.
The men had watched amused, as he continued to try, until his parents came and took him back to the house. He was determined from that day to wield a spear and shield. His dad wanted him to become a sword fighter, but Jace always said he preferred the spear. His dad eventually gave up trying to turn him. So the dad decided that he would encourage it instead. A wanderer walked into the town one day and witnessed Jace playing around with the spears and shields. He watched Jace until his parents came to get him.
The man saw a determination in Jace’s eyes he had not seen in but a few. He pursued them back to his house and later after eating at the local tavern returned to the house. The man asked if he could speak to Jace’s parents. They were not so sure to trust this man until he revealed his purpose of his far travels. He was to recruit new soldiers and knights into the ranks of Ostia. The parents were still not so sure and asked for the man’s name. “The name is Sander.” Jace had heard this as he listened carefully from the other room. His parents agreed to let him go. Sander and Jace left that night. It was very sudden for Jace just to be whisked away like that.
Over the travels, Sander taught Jace many things about fighting and respect for more experienced knights and soldiers. Jace learned that Sander was a dual swords man and was greatly respected as a sword master. Sander taught Jace constantly. Jace loved the experience and treasured as much of it as he could.
Upon reaching Castle Ostia, Jace had learned a lot. However he was still a rookie compared to the knights and soldiers. The nobles of the castle were very concerned for the boy’s safety. Sander showed them otherwise though saying Jace had much potential in him. The older knights found it fun to watch Jace practice against the new recruits. Every so often Jace might win, by chance. He was their “If you can beat him you’re in our ranks guy.” This was a good idea since if they couldn’t beat a kid, then how would they fare in the field? The older more experienced generals and halberdier’s helped Sander teach Jace.
Over the next few years Jace learned from some of the best. Around 16 he could beat one or two of the Ostia knights.
On Jace’s 18 birthdays Sander gave Jace an slim lance and vulenary. “Just in case…” those were his lasts words to Jace. Before they all went to their quarters. When Jace woke and heard the news of Sanders assassination. He was in an outrage asking how could have someone slipped by the renowned Ostia’s defense. No one knew and Jace could only curse under his breath and make a vow to find those who killed his mentor and great friend. He left with his rookie friend Gordon. Who happened to be a knight. Little did Jace know how much of his life he would owe this friend….
Role-play sample? (Just for the heck of it.)
Jace and Gordon walked down a long dirt road. They weren’t very sure where they were going. Jace looked up at the sun and covered his eyes. “It’s sure hot today…” He wiped the sweat from his forehead. Gordon laughed “You’re the one wearing that light armor. Try this on for size.” He said gesturing to his massive suit of armor. Jace rolled his eyes. He saw a butterfly and watched it fly and land on Gordon’s face. He blew it away. “Why me?” Gordon asked. Jace just laughed and kept walking. Jace stopped and looked back at Gordon. “Rest?” He offered to the knight. “Defiantly. Whew!” He moved over beside a tree and laid his lance down. He also took off his helmet revealing his golden hair which shone in the sun.
Jace lay down next to him and took off his helmet too. He unhooked his spear and laid it down. “Some birthday that was…” He muttered and leaned back on the tree. Gordon looked at the sky with Jace.
“So do you think we will find them?” Jace watched a nearby cloud float slowly by. “Maybe, we have to be persistent though.” Gordon nodded and shut his eyes trying to get some sleep.
Jace listened to the nature around them. Carefully he watched the birds fly by. He had always wondered how it would be to be an archer. But then again he would be a lousy shot. Jace stood up and walked out of the shade provided by the trees. He grabbed his spear and spun it in the air. He thrusted forward and stepped back a bit, giving him space he needed for another move if needed to finish an enemy. He stopped for a second and thought he heard a scream.
He stopped and looked in both directions. He saw some dirt clouds far down the right of the road. He peered forward and saw three horsemen chasing young women. He ran over to the tree and slapped Gordon awake. “Rise and shine buttercup! We got trouble.” Jace grabbed his shield and his lance and ran back over onto the road. Gordon slowly got up and grabbed his javelin. He secured his helmet on and jogged over. “Whew! What’s the problem?”
Jace pointed down the road and Gordon say them. The lady and the three riders coming closer and closer to them.
Gordon readied his lance and Jace got into a defensive position. The lady ran past them and stopped. She looked at them funny and got behind Jace. The three riders stopped. “One had a lance the other two had swords. “Well we got a good fight here.” said the lead horsemen. “An Ostia knight and soldier how wonderful.” he sneered. Jace stood his ground, as did Gordon. “So will you give the girl up? Or do we have to fight you for her.” Before Jace replied, the man raised his hand and stopped him. “I think it would be better if you guys ran back to Ostia. So you don’t lose too much blood.” he laughed.
The lady cringed at his harsh words. Jace looked back at her, she was scared of these men and that was obvious. Gordon laughed “Sorry, but only cowards run. So how about you guys go back to where you came from and let us here go on with our personal problems.” They all laughed at Gordon. Jace smirked at Gordon “Always the smart one…” he muttered. The first horseman went first. Jace dodged only to have a light skim to the shoulder. Gordon however put his lance in front of man and knocked him off the horse. The man hit the ground and got to his feet. He ran at Jace with his sword high in the air. Jace stepped aside and caught the man’s knee.
The second horseman charged forward only to have Gordon’s spear pierce his body as he rode by. The horse kept going down the road oblivious to his rider’s death. The last man, leader of the three growled at the uselessness of his riders. “I underestimated you two.” He said as he charge forward with his lance at his side. Gordon lifted his spear once again to catch the rider. But the man was ready and moved just out of the way. But this time Jace was ready and thrusted forward catching the man’s leg.
“Arrgggghh!” The man yelled in pain as the wound bleed deep. “Fools! You two just got into more trouble then you bargained for.” He rode away, preserving his life yet for another battle. “Ya that’s right run coward!” Jace whooped into the air. The lady fainted. “Time for us to deal with our new problem. Gordon laid his spear down and picked the lady up in his arms. He laid her next to the tree. Jace took off his helmet and laid it down beside the tree. “She doesn’t look much older than you Jace.” Gordon pointed out, “Ya like I need someone in my life.” She had a few cuts and bruises, nothing serious. But oh how they didn’t know how much trouble she would get them into…
