Macendew was as lively as one could imagine. Many of the townspeople wandered the streets, either to settle in at their homes for the evening or to hit up one tavern or another for a few mugs of ale. Those with the luxury to do so, that is. The taverns were full often enough, between the townspeople and the soldiers, but many soldiers were stuck outside of Macendew on some assignment or another.
Others were stuck with the exceptionally more dull duty of patrolling sects of the town. It was on such a duty that Eris found herself that evening. Sure, she went about her duty and kept a keen eye out to for anything out of the ordinary or anyone suspicious, but she knew she'd find nothing. And once she acknowledged that realization the fact that should could be doing literally anything more productive would practically drive her mad.
The young bastard grit her teeth as she stomped around a street corner for what had to be the eleventh time. Still another hour left before her shift was relieved, but just like every other patrol the last hour was bound to be the longest. Worst part was there was such little time left to do much else. She could hit the tavern and throw back a mug of ale, sure, but if she chugged it she was like to spew it back up all the same. Of all the ways to smear her reputation, puking up ale was by far among the least favorable.
More likely was that she'd hit the practice grounds and stab at a dummy a few times with her spear. Help ease the anger and tension she already had burning inside her. Eris had done her best to hold her tongue, but the complete lack of action she'd experienced the past two weeks was practically driving her mad.
Eris slowed her patrol and took a calming breath. All she had to do was stop thinking about it and focus. Do her job, and the shift would end. That simple.
But she was still so pissed off.

The gentle rocking of the wagon kept Sudreth comfortable as he took a nap awaiting his destination. The light breeze of the day helped set in Sudreth's lax additude as he couldn't have a care in the world. It was almost enough to help him forget why he was going to Bern in the first place. To leave his bloody past behind him and hopefully find work as anything really. He had a bit of history as a sell sword (Albeit not a very good one) but it should be enough to get accepted as a trainee or something of the sort. or if that didn't work out, he always had his experience as the clean up boy to fall back on!
"I really should have thought this through better..." Sudreth told himself as all these thoughts went through his head. "Meh... I'll figure it out when I need to."
Suddenly the wagon came to a stop. "Boy! We're here!" The driver called out. Sudreth rubbed his eye and sat up to take a look around at his new surroundings. T'was a sight to behold as the town was bustling with people, more than Sudreth had ever seen and the commotion was lively. Honestly seeing so many people in one place made Sudreth a bit nervous but he sucked it up and got out of the wagon. "She's quite the town, I'll give ya that" The driver must have noticed Sudreth's look of wonder.
"Thank you for the ride." Sudreth said rather quietly and he handed the man his payment for the ride, which unfortunately happened to be the last of Sudreth's money. As the driver rode off to deliver his stock, Sudreth put on his hood and walked into the crowd.
His utmost objective was to find work so he doesn't starve or freeze to death. Not knowing where to really start he began asking around to see where the nearest recruitment officer was. Hopefully they were recruiting for trainees. Though not many people were willing to share much information. "It's probably the eye patch." he thought to himself. After a few hours of fruitless searching, Sudreth began to feel the affects of hunger. He tried to ignore it and continue on his search for work but his belly's rumbling continued until he could bear it no more!
He looked around and found an open fruit stand selling Apples and the like. Sudreth went through his pockets for money before he realized that he was broke. His only options now were sell his sword for some food, or steal. He thought about it for a while before coming to a conclusion. "Gotta eat to live, Gotta steal to eat. Hopefully this doesn't get me killed" He prepared himself and then walked towards the booth. as he was passing by he quickly swiped an apple from the counter and continued along his way without ever looking back. Hopefully no one caught him.

"Gods damn it if this doesn't suck." As soon as she heard herself think Eris was quick to shake her head and re-focus on her surroundings. Last thing she needed to was to get lost in her thoughts on the assignment. That was how soldiers screwed up simple patrols and got humiliated in front of their peers. She'd seen it happen before and she was not about to join their ranks. She had to be better than that.
Still, Eris had decided to that taking a small pause in her patrol would be for the best. She sat down on a bench in front of a closing shop and observed the happenings of the street in front of her. Still alert, still mindful of her duty, but damn it even she needed a small break from the routine. Instead she watched as one of the last carriages rode towards the gates. Probably dropped off a few soldiers or Bernites who wished to start making proper contributions to the cause, which really should be EVERY Bernite, at least in Eris' opinion.
With a quiet sigh she stretched her arms before resuming her patrol, and good thing that she did, as she managed to spot something rather peculiar. A small boy, likely a pre-teen, swiftly passing by one of the open fruit stands. The stand's attendant was busy chatting up a male soldier and didn't pay the boy any mind. But Eris saw the movement of his arm, and the slight wavering of a few apples after he passed. Yeah, the brat definitely stole something.
Eris glowered at the boy and didn't hesitate to storm after him. Part of her wanted to shout at him right away, but that would probably just frighten him off. So instead she took long, quick strides after him, reaching out to grab his shoulder roughly as soon as she was in reach.
"Hey brat, mind showing me what's in your hands?" She asked firmly, the sub-par day showing itself clearly in the edginess of her voice. Eris wasn't about to try and show this boy the business end of her spear, but she was certainly not above making an arrest at this point. At least it'd make the rest of her shift fly by in comparison.

"Ah crap..." Sudreth swore to himself as he felt a hand grab his shoulder. Without so much as a thought, he stuffed the apple into the pocket next to his sword sheath before turning to whomever stopped him and responding "Yes..?" Rather nervously. The last thing he needed right now was to get a bad rep in his first day here.

The boy was rightfully nervous. Even if he had been an innocent, the harsh tone in Eris' voice along with the lance she kept at the ready would certainly be intimidating. Not to mention this boy was still short: Eris had about half a foot on him. Eris did size the boy up rather quickly, taking note of the sword he kept sheathed on his waist. Beyond that his garments weren't anything special, nor was he especially armored.
He had the look of a common thief and even if his hands were empty then the odds were he pocketed the fruit.
"You heard me, brat. I told you to show me your hands. Don't make me repeat myself." Eris stated firmly, gripping her lance and stepping right into the boy's personal space. "But you know what? How about you empty your pockets instead. And do it fast, you got that?!"
Funny enough was that this was the first time Eris had to make an arrest or a shakedown. She'd been taught and trained how to do it, of course she'd seen it be done several times both back at her home and here with the rebellion army. When a new servant was caught trying to steal from her fath...the duke's wife, Duke Varrick wasted no time in organizing for the thief's imprisonment. Eris had also seen it on her first day in Macendew. Her commanding officer caught an older man trying to steal weapons from the army. She never got to understand why, but that man wound up imprisoned and died in his cell. Lack of nourishment, they said. Not a good way to go.
If this boy was smart, he'd turn over what he stole and not try to put up a fight whatsoever. With how her day's gone Eris was perfectly fine with ending his life herself. Thieves didn't deserve any better, after all.

"Tch...." Sudreth gritted his teeth as he was caught between a rock and a hard place. Weighing his options Sudreth thought of how to get out of this mess. He felt he could probably out run the scary soldier lady if he needed to, but the problem arose with her having seen his face. Within the day there would be wanted posters all over the place calling him in for questioning, which was something he wouldn't want for his stay here. And a confrontation was out of the question. She already stood taller than Sudreth, but her armor was much better than Sudreth's own cheap leather and her weapons were most likely of higher quality too. Another disadvantage was that the soldier lady was just that, a soldier. She was probably much better trained and experienced than Sudreth could hope to be and even if he could manage to beat her, the commotion would be bound to attract the attention of her colleagues where then Sudreth would truly have no hope.
With no way out, Sudreth accepted his loss. Sighing as his stomach growled once again, he pulled the apple out of his pocket and handed it to the woman with a begrudging look on his face. "Fine... here you go."

The boy took too damned long to do as Eris asked, at least to her liking, but in the end he did wind up taking the apple out of his pocket. Ah hah! She knew he swiped something. Good, now was the matter of...hm, what did she do now actually? Bring him to a superior officer? Most likely, but that almost felt like a waste of time. Eris quickly took stock of her surroundings and noted that neither the townspeople nor any of her fellow militants were all that intrigued in what was going on here.
Like hell she was just going to let him go, and she didn't really care for his reasoning behind his actions either. Obviously he stole the apple because he was poor and hungry. Still, he was so young, yet he had a sword on him. Somehow that just didn't add up to her. For all she knew he was part of some bigger plot, but Eris couldn't be bothered with such paranoid thinking. The child was poor, armed, and young. That much she was certain of.
"Figures, you little thief." Eris practically spat. She grabbed at his arm and took a few steps in the direction towards her barracks. "You're coming with me. My commanding officer can decide what to do with you." Eris had decided to bring him with her to a superior, and perhaps they'd decide what to do with him. It was unlikely anyone higher than a sergeant would be available to her at this time, and given his age and the small scale of his crime jail was not all that likely, but what else was Eris to do? Let him go free?
Hell no. But still, Eris did have questions for the brat.
"State your name and place of birth. Fast, brat." If he was a Bernite then that would make things easier for him. He could just be an orphan because of the rebellion, after all. Of course he could also be Lycian, what with the border being so close, but even then that wasn't so bad. As long as he wasn't Ilian.

The looks people gave them as they walked through the streets gave Sudreth all the information he needed to realize this probably wasn't standard procedure. "This seems a bit unorthodox, don't you think?" Sudreth commented on how the woman was handling the situation but a tightened grip on his arm told him that was the wrong response.
"This lady is really starting to get on my nerves..." He thought to himself. He considered hitting the woman or incapacitating her in some way just so he would get away. But then an image of his own arrow ridden body lying on the streets while the streets ran red with his blood flashed through his mind and suddenly the idea didn't seem so well thought out anymore. And assuming he could get away and out of the city, the lack of money or supplies of any sort would most certainly end with him starving to death out in the mountains or being eaten alive by a giant spider, or even worse, a pack of wild man-eating rabbits.
After a bit more thought he came to the conclusion that: he was boned so he might as well comply and get a reduced sentence or something along those lines. "Alright fine. You win. Jerk..." He muttered the last word under his breath though he felt she might have over heard him anyways. "My name is Sudreth. I was born in Badon. Is that all there is to these interogations? Or are you just bad at your job?"

"Listen, thief, I'm the one asking the questions, all right!?" Other soldiers and townspeople had finally taken note of Eris and her captive, but honestly she could care less. Let them stare and mumble, she was doing her damned job. The kid DID have a point, her questions were more out of curiosity than actual duty, but she had no idea what she was supposed to do in this situation. It genuinely would have been easier for her had he tried to fight back: then she'd just impale him and be done with it.
Still, his name was 'Sudreth' from Badon. One couldn't make up a name like that, really. And Badon was that port city in Lycia, if Eris remembered correctly. So he wasn't an orphan, at least not a Bernese one as a result of the war. He'd lose a few pity points from her superiors there.
Eris tightened her grip on Sudreth's arm as she approached the barracks. "And if you've got a brain in your head, you brat, then you won't insult me again. Got that?" She practically growled at him. With that warning she opened the door to the barracks and stormed through them, startling some of her fellow soldiers on her way to the commander's room. Most of the soldiers had been winding down, stripping their armour off and finally relaxing for the day, but at least they hadn't been sleeping yet.
Soon enough Eris had dragged the young man straight to the office of her sergeant and banged on the door three times with her fist. "Sergeant Eriksson, this is private Eris Albrecht. I have a thief in my custody."
Within seconds an older, bearded brunette man opened the door and quickly inspected Sudreth before stepping back and gesturing for Eris to enter. So Eris dragged Sudreth into the sergeant's office and shoved the brat towards the sergeant's desk, closing the door behind her. No reason to hold the brat now: he had no escape.
"All right...let's hear this out." Eriksson said with a sigh as he sat down behind his desk. He gazed at Sudreth coolly and clasped his hands together over his desk. "This is your chance to explain yourself. What did you steal, boy?"
Curious as to this process, Eris crossed her arms over her chest and leaned against the wall next to the door. She already could tell that the sergeant was not taking this too seriously, but so long as Sudreth received some form of punishment she couldn't care less.

"Urgh... This really isn't how I wanted to spend my very first day in town." Sudreth moaned to himself as he was dragged along the streets and up to the Barracks. He had thought he heard the woman say something and she gripped his arm tighter, but he was drowning her out at this point in favor of complaining to himself.
The door swung open and the woman continued to drag him along, this time through the soldiers taking a break in the building. "Son of a..! It was here the whole time!?" Sudreth felt stupid as he realized this entire ordeal could have been prevented had he found this place before being pushed to stealing an Apple. Sighing a huge sigh, he took a quick look around at the soldiers they were passing. None of them looked terribly strong, though their sheer numbers would cut Sudreth into pork chops should he attempt to resist now.
Sudreth's train of thought was then interrupted by the woman holding him captive knocking on a door impatiently. After a few seconds of waiting Sudreth was greeted to the sight of a large bearded man. He gestured the woman to enter and she did with Sudreth in tow. She then shoved him in front of her to stand before the man. "Jerk..." He muttered once again as the door behind him closed.
"All right...let's hear this out." The Bearded man sat down behind his desk and stared at Sudreth. "This is your chance to explain yourself. What did you steal, boy?"
Sudreth thought out what he was going to say carefully. Maybe if he could downplay his (admittedly not very grave) offence, he could keep his neutral standing and it won't affect his chances of finding work with a recruitment officer. Clearing his throat and pushing aside the hair near his eye so he could speak to the man eye-to-eye, he began. "T'was just an Apple sir. I was getting awful hungry and I had spent all my gold on my way here. I figured I'd pay the merchant back after I could find some work here in Bern."

As soon as she caught the whole 'youthful innocence' tone in Sudreth's voice Eris couldn't help but snort in derision and roll her eyes. As if he was actually going to pay the merchant back. What sort of nonsense was that? Still she noted that her sergeant gave a slow nod and took his time digesting the boy's response, so Eris decided to hold her tongue for a while longer yet.
"Mmh, and I'm sure you know stealing isn't exactly the best course of action, regardless of your circumstances." Eriksson glanced at Eris. "Did you have him return the apple?"
Eris winced. She had completely forgotten to force the brat to return it. In fact she even let him hold onto the apple. So she shook her head, a bit ashamed of herself. "No, sir. I was too hasty in bringing him here."
Eriksson didn't seem none to bothered by this revelation and instead leaned back in his chair, his focus returning to Sudreth. "You say you spent your money on the way here? Are you Lycian, then?"
"Boy told me he came from Badon." Eris answered swiftly. She had the information, may as well make the most of it. Eriksson gave her a quick glance and nod before once again focusing on Sudreth.
"That's a long way to travel alone, at your age as well." Eriksson gave a low hum as he idly scratched his beard in contemplation, before he finally shrugged. "If you meant what you said about work, then I suppose we could have work your debt off here. We could always use another hand to help with cleaning the barracks, maintaining our weapons and gear, running errands for the higher ups. This work I offer you, boy. Or do you prefer prison?"
Tch, that's what Eris figured would happen. Still, at least the little thief was getting punished.

Sudreth listened and analyzed the exchange between the two as they discussed his case and the evidence presented. From what he could gather the bearded man, Erikson if Sudreth recalled correctly, was clearly the superior officer, though he seemed lax for someone of his line of work. The woman, Albrecht was it..? Meh... it was too long and confusing for Sudreth to bother remembering it, she was probably a foot soldier, and a hard-ass at that.
"If you meant what you said about work, then I suppose we could have work your debt off here. We could always use another hand to help with cleaning the barracks, maintaining our weapons and gear, running errands for the higher ups. This work I offer you, boy. Or do you prefer prison?" He said it like Sudreth had much of a choice.
"Hmm... a shitty job or rotting away in a cell... tough choice..." He said sarcastically in his mind. "Well, work is work I guess, and anything is better than staying in a cell for who knows how long!"
"Yes sir!" Sudreth said, bowing a little to show some respect. He turned to to woman and gave her a little bow as well. While bowing he noticed her face gave off the feeling that she was unsatisfied with how easy he got off. "Well screw you too jerk." he thought to himself. He stuck his tongue out very quickly before turning to Erikson and asking, "So, when do I start working here?"

" I mean...It's no Redoran..but it is great for foot soldiers." Of the four soldiers moving through the barracks at Macendew, one of them was speaking with a tone that hinted to some underlying excitement. Ilbrae was by far one of the biggest supporters of the shift towards aligning with the Rebels. When Ilheod had announced the decision to his unit, the lad had been the first to clap a hand to his back and boisterously proclaim a toast. As the lad's older brother, Ilheod hadn't been able to deny him that much at-least, but the commander in him had to maintain a disciplined poise. Out of all Nine of his siblings, Ilbrae was probably one of the shortest as well, standing at 5'7. Clad in the dark blue armor that every soldier in the nightwings wore, he moved through the barracks with a silver infused blade sheathed at his hip and a pouch of throwing javlin's secured to his back. His wild red hair matched Ilheod's own in shade flawlessly, but was no where near as well kept. There was a silver insignia of Bern etched onto his braestplate though, with twin wyverns of black at either side. This marked him as the second in command of the entire Nightwings Wyvern Unit, just under his older brother. Behind Ilbrae and his older brother, another voice chimed in. One that was even younger than Ilbrae's, but lacking in the excitement. " Yes, but that's the design isn't it? Fort Redoran is designed for Wyvern Riders only. That's why it's in the mountains. Can you imagine if normal foot troops tried to access it regularly? The march home would be worse than the battle itself, and it'd take longer to get up the mountain than to or from the fronts. " Ahh, Alexander. By far, one of the most talented youths that Ilheod had ever encountered, or had the honor and pleasure to work with. As the second in command to Ilheod's personal squad, his trust in the lad was immense. He'd seen a remarkable amount of combat for his age, and was just as useful as any other two flyers when it came down to it. Like Ilbrae, and the other man aside Ilheod he was clad in dark blue armor. The scruffy blonde hair of his gave him a particular emphasis on his youth. A third voice chimed in, this one far more calm than either and simply sounding tired. " Which is a common decision for mountain bases. Though there are plenty of wyvern strongholds in the valley too. Look at Larguz, the largest of the wyvern schools, and it's nestled firmly away from Bern's mountains.." Seth. A man that didn't hold a particular rank, but had been in the unit with Ilheod for so long that the two were practically siblings themselves. He'd been the first friend Ilheod made when he joined up as a squire with the Nightwings. Instead of a spear of any kind on his person, he had a blade on one side of his hip-belt and an elongated hatchet dangling from the other. His solid black hair had started to taken silver greys to it at the sides, a hint at early aging. Though he hadn't any interest in commenting, Ilheod was about to when he paused abruptly, only for him to stride ahead of them. He'd he heard a sudden banging sound, and had his palm resting at the hilt of the blade on his hip while he picked up his pace; longer strides bringing him around the corner. It sounded like someone was banging on a door. Though his silver-infused spear rested safely with its strap wound around his shoulder, a blade was a better weapon indoors with cramped space; and he knew not the cause of the banging. Not until, at-least they caught up with the incident close enough to hear voices. Unlike most of his soldiers, Ilheod was not clad in traditional armor. His armor was that which he'd had crafted for him in Sacae. During the siege of the city of Heroes, Ilheod, along with the rest of his twelve man squad in the Nightwings had taken to the sole charge of the aerial defense of the city once the gargoyles had appeared. Winged fiends with strength beyond any average man, and a hide so tough that his silver spear had found resistance. Their bones however, were what had made the battles hard. Tough enough to catch his lance if he wasn't ready, and even more unyielding to normal enemies. The suit was sturdy like plated mail, but lightweight and flexible. That hadn't changed his desire though to continue to represent his home with his insignia, and as such he'd had Bern's emblem fashioned upon the chest-plate, and over-top the right shoulder he had the symbol of the Nightwings blazed in golden colors that signified him as the squad leader. Then there was the alias. Though he didn't go by it, still presenting himself as "Ilheod, Commander of the Nightwings," the people of Sacae had given him another name. Devilslayer. He'd assisted in, and delivered the finishing blow to Hargus; the monstrosity beyond the events of that fateful siege. The armor certainly had him looking the part. With an eye-patch still securely over his left eye, his single eyed gaze narrowed as he quickly turned the corner once more and strode to the office where a door had been thrust open. Not one to eve-drop however, he would simply assure that all was well. Palm still upon his blade's pommel for security, Ilheod gazed through the doorway and spoke abruptly, His brother and two comrades quietly standing in the hall behind him. " Is everything okay in here? We heard what sounded like banging on the door, and wanted to ascertain all was well." His gaze found itself upon the soldier at the desk, clearly an officer of some rank if he was anywhere near one. Then the girl in armor. Reporting to him? Possibly. The Wyvern Commander quietly waited for an answer, before turning his gaze to the one that seemed out of place; the boy. He was obviously not a soldier, and so curiosity found itself even higher as he pondered what this lad could be doing here.

Surprise surprise: the boy took the offer of work. Well, it couldn't be helped, though Eris couldn't resist shooting the brat a small sneer when he bowed to her. Why the hell was he bowing to her anyway? Had it been up to her he'd have spent a night in prison and then gotten "politely escorted" back to Lycia.
Okay, that was a bit far, but damn was she irritable that evening. At least her shift was almost ov-
A man, clad in armour that was enviably intimidating and impressive in general, entered the the room. Eris didn't recognize him at first glance and swiftly moved to grip her spear, but once he spoke she realized that he must have been one of them. Perhaps some soldier who transferred from another base, or someone who had just returned from the front lines Eris so desperately wished to see.
Still, she had no idea who he was, so the initial thought of telling him to drop his weapons was out of the question. Besides, much as she didn't want to admit it, the man looked stronger than most. Armour like that may be purchased, but only a fool would spend that kind of money suiting up a weakling.
Eris' eyes were drawn to sergeant Eriksson, however, for the man stood up from his chair and gave a salute. "Commander Ilheod. I am Sergeant Eriksson. I'm sorry, I heard you would be joining us here, but I didn't realize that you'd arrived already."
"Wait, Commander who?" Ilheod...the name struck a bell. Like Eris had overheard some her fellow soldiers gossiping about it in the barracks a night or two ago.
But if he was a Commander, then regardless of what unit he actually outranked her sergeant. Eris grit her teeth but gave a salute as well. She wasn't exactly keen on having yet another soldier present who could order her around, but she knew better than to outright disrespect him. "Just another goal to strive towards. Just another soldier to surpass."
"And the situation is entirely under control. The banging you heard was just the impatient knocking of my soldier, here." Eris' cheeks flushed with embarrassment and anger as Eriksson tossed her under the carriage with a bit too much amusement in his tone. "Explain yourself to the Commander, Albrecht."
Another teasing jab at her, but it was also a necessary one given her temperament: a reminder of her true name. She may be a duke's bastard, but as little as that meant outside of Macendew it meant even less INSIDE of it.
"I was never treated with any privilege before I was legitimized. The hell would I expect it now?" Eris cleared her mind of these thoughts before addressing Ilheod directly.
"Commander. I had captured a thief, the boy before you, during my patrol moments ago. In my haste to have him dealt with I simply knocked on the sergeant's door. I apologize for any disruptions I may have caused...sir."
Eris shot Sudreth another spiteful glance. Now she'd gone and embarrassed herself in front of a superior officer...and she had the thieving brat to thank for that. At least she could take pleasure in the fact that he'd be cleaning the blood and grime off of her spear for the days to come.

As Sudreth turned back to Eriksson, he could feel the woman's glare burning a hole in his back. "Whatever, at least I got off Scott Fr-" Sudreth's train of thought was interrupted by the sudden interruption of a stranger. "Is everything okay in here? We heard what sounded like banging on the door, and wanted to ascertain all was well."
Looking over, he saw a group of men huddled at the door with a tall man in fancy armor and long reddish hair leading them. Suddenly a conversation broke out between the tall one that lead the interruption, Eriksson and the hard-ass that brought him here in the first place. He only vaguely followed the conversation seeing as he really wasn't that terribly interested.
When The conversation turned to the woman and she began explaining her purpose and how she came into contact with yours truly, Sudreth could the glare becoming more intense behind him. "Could you make it anymore obvious that you really suck at your job and you really don't like me?" He taunted her in his head. Once they had finished talking and the attention turned to Sudreth for a small bit, he just quickly gave the man a wave, not wanting to spark any long running discussions, or even worse, another interrogation. He was really done with all of that. All he wanted to do now is find a nice alley to rest and fall asleep in until he was needed for repaying his debt to the fruit vendor.
