"Zael, I don't think this is a good idea, let alone I doubt our command would approve." Angrim was in the process of being guided to one of Bern's arenas. It looked official enough and they carried a strict no murder rule but real weapons were plenty dangerous and death was a commonplace event. Many of the arena goers came strictly for the deaths. "And besides, I doubt they will let me bring Hel with me. I am far better mounted than I am on foot."
"Look at it this way my skeptical friend, without Hel to help you out then you can focus on that weakness of yours. Oh! We should get you a sword too! Yeah, that would be great!" Zael was actively pushing Angrim along with Hel in toe.
"A sword? But I have hardly ever used one."
"All the best contestants use swords though! Ugh, you're right, no time to get you one right now. Your spear will have to do. I'll find you a sword for the next round."
"But I don't want-"
"Shush shush shush! Let your manager do his thing." Zael pushed Angrim out into an arena with screaming combat fanatics.
"Agh!" The transition from darkness to light was blinding and the roars of the viewers deafening. Turning back Angrim looked to see the entrance now bared off with Zael standing there with a thumbs up.
"Do well and maybe I can get you into doubles!" Zael then patted on Hel's side and led him away. With a final shout of, "I'm betting on you!" he was gone.
It was now that Angrim actually managed to take a look around the place. It was a hard, dusty ground with pillars strategically placed but not supporting anything. Likely made to help deal with opposing mages or archers with cover. Or at least Angrim planned that approach.
Across the arena Angrim was then able to see his opponent entering and the arena fell silent nearly instantly. The calm before the storm? Arena customs? Angrim kicked his spear off his shoulder and begrudgingly readied himself.

"So this is Bern", spoke Wei to himself as he looked around the arena. He had heard a lot about the place in his travels and on more than one occasion he had been accused of being from Bern. At first he did not understand why, but once he arrived he understood. It was the axes. Bern was filled with them. Ever since he crossed the border he had seen so many axe wielding warriors. It was almost as if the axe itself was Bern's symbol. In the area it was no different. Men and women carried axes of all different sizes. some big, some large, some small, and some were interlocking. Even with all the love for axes there were plenty of other weapons to be seen. Lances, pikes, cleavers, and katanas. The arena was a fighters heaven. there was a weapon for every type and advantage here.
"Hey kid you are up", shouted a voice toward Wei. The young journeyman had paid some good coin to join in on the arena fights. He was hoping to not only get some combat experience, but also gain some coin. Looking around Wei was starting to think that the coin was not going to happen. So many warriors and all of them looked so skilled. Still that did not stop Wei. He was a fighter. He knew he could only learn though the grit of combat.
"Alright I will make them cry for there mothers", shouted Wei as he drew his two axes from his belt. The one in his right hand was Bad Day, a brave axe. The one in his left hand was your average iron axe. It was the first real war axe Wei had owned and it served him well so far. With determination and furry Wei charged into the area. He did not bother to look at his surroundings. He simply wanted to find his opponent and swing.

Angrim looked back at the entrance one last time and lamented how he allowed himself to get here. If he had had Hel with him he was more than confident in his ability to gain victory, but as things stood he was at more disadvantages than ever. The ground was sandy, he was on foot, and his opponent had axes. Yes, not just one axe, but two.
He continued to lament how he never took combat too seriously. He'd seen real battle sure but only from a wyvern's back. This boy was probably accustomed to the rigors and styling of the arena. It really was a bad time for a lance, but even still he could hear people cheering for him just as loudly as for the boy. Perhaps they were both fresh for such things. The idea pleased him because maybe he could turn the match around with brutal efficiency.
Could he play the role of a heel fighter? It did not please him exactly but it was an arena where he would be expected to win and create a persona, or rather he would like to leave his arena styled self behind at the end of the day. Very well, he would win at all costs, if he became the villain of the arena then so be it! He twirled his lance around and slammed the butt of it into the sand. Pointing at the boy he announced, "I will break your bones!" Zael, not catching on to what Angrim was planning had a clear look of shock and discomfort from the audience.
With that declaration he would give the boy not rest and rushed in for a mighty thrusts. If he was prepared he considered tossing sand in his eyes too. Yes, the role of heel might suit him just fine.

With all the gusto of a charging boar Wei charged into the arena. His eyes briefly shifted to the crowd in there seats. There were so many of them. Had they come just to watch him fight. No, they were not here for him. They were here for the sport. It did not matter who came out the gate they would simply enjoy the violence. So this is Bern, thought Wei. The young man's eyes shifted back toward his opponent. The man had given a declaration, Wei ignored it. He did not care what the man thought or did. All that matter was what he did here and now.
Charging forward Wei was ready to face his opponent. His axes had a advantage against the lance due to there ability to hook the shaft and splinter the wood. However all of that was only on paper. In actual combat things were a lot more difficult. His opponent started off with a thrust. It was a good choice for a attack. It pretty much meant that Wei had to stop or risk skewering himself on his opponents spear. Following the lessons he had learned so far in combat Wei side stepped the lance. His body responded as he wanted, but he was a bit too slow. The spear blade cut into his dark blue jacket and slicked though his tick shirt. Blood ran down the spear, but it was a small scratch. Wei had pulled thought, but he was not uninjured.
Alright time for the hook, thought Wei as his body cleared the spear. The boy swung his right hand axe, the brave one, in a attempt to hook onto the shaft of the lance. If he succeed he could gain some leverage and possibly chop down onto the shaft of the spear. However the question was if he could actually do it.

It did not take Angrim too long to accommodate his footing in the shifting sands. With that he was able to close the distance on the boy and deliver his assault. He was taken aback by his grazing blow. He had expected his opponent to outmaneuver him far better than that. He was green, that was good.
The boy proceeded to latch out in an attempt to lock into the shaft of his lance with his axe. Was he going for a splitting strike? Was the kid strong enough to break the steel? No matter, Angrim intended to reverse the boy's strategy around on himself. Surly if it worked out he would have the crowd's adoration. If he were not so focused on the combat he would laugh at himself for how quickly he shifted from wanting nothing to do with it to enjoying it.
As the boy's brave axe hooked onto the lance he had two options. He could try and pull the boy in and sweep him or he could pull the boy in and headbutt him. He had to watch out for his second axe. If he retained his good sense under pressure a chop from it could be problematic, but he was willing to take that risk.
"Good try kid! But you are far from the first to try and use this little trick on me!" and so he would also be far from the last. Angrim jerked his lance to pull it closer and stepped with his right foot showing the boy his side but slipping it past the boy's legs. He grinned and tried to bring his head forth for a headbutt. If he connected the kid should trip right over his leg and he could end it. He hoped for the best.

"Yosh", spoke Wei as everything seemed to be going well. The axe went across the lance and moved into the section where he could hook it. For once everything was going just as planned. However it all went down hill from there. His opponent sprung into action. He was not going to let the boy break his shaft nor was he going to let him control the battle. He pulled in on his lance hoping to pull the boy in. However he overestimated young Wei's grip strength. The force of his pull snatched right out of the young boy's hand.
"Crap", spoke Wei as he lost his best weapon. The pull made him stumble forward a bit, but Wei was able to jump backwards. His brave axe skitted across the sand and landed some place behind his opponent. Now with only one axe left, and the iron one at that, Wei realized he was going to be fighting a up hill battle. He quickly shifted his axe over to his right hand and began to plan out his next phase of attack. Clearly hooking was out of the question for him. He did not have the grip strength to properly pull his opponent in.
"if I can't hook then I have to attack", shouted Wei as he charged forward. The axe was a offensive weapon. It was poor for defense. There was no way Wei could properly defend himself against any kind of weapon, let alone another offensive weapon like the lance. So instead Wei chose to charge and throw himself at his enemy. With both hands on his axe Wei charged and swung at the shaft on the spear. With the ferocity of Roland Wei struck out with all his strength. His goal was to blow the enemy weapon out the way and charge in for a powerful strike.

Angrim smirked as the journeyman celebrated. The boy would not expect what was to come next, and neither would Angrim for that matter. As the axe hooked in Angrim tried his plans only to watch him have overestimated the lad. The brave axe was ripped from his hands and the both of them were left to stumble back breaking apart. In an echoing of Wei's words, "Crap!"
As Angrim fell back he caught himself only to see the boy had decided to take the initiative this time. "COME THEN!!!" Angrim had no intentions of letting his opponent by to get his axe back and so he hunkered down. The boy shifted his axe to his right hand. So he was both right handed and not well trained enough to act ambidextrously. Neither was he, sure, but he did not have to expose a weakness like the boy did.
Had the two been on a battlefield this may very well have been the end of the lad if he messed his assault up. But these were none lethal rules and so Angrim could not allow the lad to impale himself during the charge. Naturally, Angrim had no obligation to let him get in close either. He may have worn stock armor on his arms and legs but his chest was completely exposed. He had less weight on him than most wyvern riders. This allowed him to act just fast enough to sidestep the swing. He hoped for the boy to have really put his all into it and overextend himself. If he did he would swing his lance around and strike his face with the end of the pole. If not, well, the boy would retain the offensive for certain.

Spider monkeys, thought Wei as his body moved into the swing. His opponent was quicker on his feet than Wei was swinging his axe. The blow missed entirely and as a result Wei was thrown off balance. The nature of his very weapon of choice, the axe. It was a powerful weapon that can take town almost any opponent. However the weapon had a very bad backlash to it. If you missed your target you were thrown off balance. That was the nature of the weapon he used. Wei always saw it as Gods way of balancing things out.
As Wei stumbled forward after his miss his opponent attacked with the none lethal end of his lance. The blow caught Wei right in the dead center of his face. the blow caused Wei to blink and close his eyes for a mere moment. Blood began to run down from his nose as a wave of dizziness rolled over him. What in the world happened, asked Wei to himself as he attempted to recover from the mans next strike. He knew he was going to be thrown off balance when he missed his swing. What he did not expect was for the enemy to use that moment of weakness to strike.
I need to do something, thought Wei to himself. So far his opponent had been controlling the battlefield. Wei was going to need to change that if he desired to win. At the moment however Wei did not have anything working for him. His iron axe was far to clunky and his brave axe was not in his hand. He was lucky that his enemy had side stepped him. He no longer needed to go though the man to get to his better weapon. Young Wei began to formulate a plan in his mind.

Oh good, he was able to evade just like he wanted and return the pressure against his opponent just like he wanted to. His opponent had counted on connecting and seemed to throw his everything into his strike, how green was he? Regardless, Angrim's counter was flawless and he scored a second hit on the boy, 2-0 his lead, and blood drawn twice over. It was not impossible for him to make a reversal of his fortune but Angrim certainly was controlling this bout. He could end the fight with brutal efficiency if he wanted, he suspected, but it was an arena, they wanted flash and flair. His goal would be to get in the boy's head. If he could make him question himself and overthink the fight then he would say he successfully destroyed his opponent.
The boy had recoiled from the second blow and was now bleeding from his nose and lightly from his side. Another aspect to his advantage, most wonderful advantages indeed. Neither blow was lethal but the loss of blood tended to inflict panic, and even if not eventually exhaustion. His plan seemed to be working to some extent as the boy did not attack him again. The boy was either trying to find a new way around his opponent, or fearful of him and hesitating. He did not care to know the answer and would not ask him after the match.
If he would not act on his own then Angrim would take the lead once more. He stepped in as if he were to deliver a big thrust only to kick with his back leg to swing the lance around into a horizontal strike. 'Let's see if I can take blood thrice times?'

Alright thought Wei as he began a attempt to form a plan. However his opponent did not give him the time. The man charged forward ready to strike at the lad. What do I do, what do I do, thought Wei to himself. He had no time to think. Instead the young journeyman fell back onto his pure instincts. Like a boar to the slaughter Wei charged forward. It was actually the smart, well not smart but rather better move in this situation. Wei's sudden charge pushed him forward past the tip of the man's lance. Instead of being slashed by the blade Wei was whacked by the side of the shaft. the force of the blow was enough to knock the boy off balance. Wei fell over to the side and hit the dirt. However the young boy was no longer relying on logic. He was fighting off pure instincts now. As he hit the dirt his body rolled and pulled him back to his feet. The young boy took three steps forward and then put all of his strength into his legs and leaped with every fiber in his body.
"Well il be a monkeys uncle", spoke a man in the stands as he watched the fight. He had become a bit bored with the fight due to Wei inexperience and the one sided nature. However the young boy was able to bring some life back into it due to his tenacity. The man stared in awe as the young boy leaped two times his height into the air. He had not seen a strike like that in ages. The last time he had seen it was back in the day when they had placed old Glass in the arena for his execution. It was a move reserved for those who fought on nothing but pure instincts and aggression. A strike like a true brigand.
From the air Wei came down flying toward his opponent. His axe was raised high and his entire body propelled thought the air. It was game or bust and Wei had given his next strike all that he had.

His swing did not cut the boy like he wanted it to but he still swiped him and knocked him about and into the dirt. With a flourish and twirl of the lance he attempted to bring it to bear on the boy but he dodged out of the way just fine. His first chance to end it was lost right then. Internally he cursed his fortune but he would not let himself waver in spite of it.
As the boy rose and leaped into the air Angrim was still rising from his lower thrust and now the boy was... incredibly high off the ground. For what that kid lacked in arm and grip strength he sure made up for with his jumping ability, it was almost surreal, unnatural even, and he was not ready for it.
If the lad had jumped a little less high he would have been able to take the fight in this one go. However, he went so high Angrim had the precious few moments from the fall to raise his lance in defense. Even still the boy crashed down upon Angrim, his iron axe cleaving into his armored shoulder toppling him in its wake. Angrim was strained by this and the crowd was stunned but adoring it. The boy had reversed his fortune and simultaneously won over the crowd, but what kind of heel would Angrim be if he did not return the favor?
His right arm was thoroughly thrashed by the blow but as they hit the ground he rolled back kneeing the boy in the gut trying to throw him off. He needed to end the fight here. That wound went too deep to prolong.

Holy crap it worked, thought Wei to himself as his blow landed. it was the first time in the fight that he did not screw up. Still Wei was going to need to capitalize on this. The boy moved to try and plant his foot into the chest of the man. However his opponent was a step ahead of him. The lance user returned the favor with a knee and sent Wei falling backwards himself. The blow hit right in the pit of Wei's stomach. with no armor to cushion the blow the air was knocked right out of him. Wei fell back onto the ground giving his opponent time to recover. Instincts told Wei to jump up and attack, but his mind had already taken back over. Instead of moving to the fight Wei Crawled away for three steps and then pulled himself up to run to the other side of the arean. Boos erupted from the members of the crowd who where on the same side Wei was running toward, but the ones behind him understood what exactly the boy was doing.
"Got it", spoke Wei as he grabbed hold of brave axe. If he was going to finish the fight Wei figured he would need it. His opponent was better than him in all fields, strength, speed, and skill. The only thing Wei seemed to have going for him was his wiles and he would have to use that. Double axe fighting was harder to predict than single axe. so Wei figured he might as well give it a shot. He also made a mental note to throw away all ideas of hooking the man. That was clearly not going to work. Slamming both of the heads of his axes together Wei created a small flash of sparks. He then charged towards his opponent with both axes at the ready.

There was no point in hiding that the axe strike hurt; anyone could tell just by watching and seeing the blood. As the boy ran off Angrim rested his lance against his good shoulder and gently nursed the spot. It was deep after all. If he did not end this soon he would be forced to forfeit or risk some long term damage. 'Damn that was sloppy of me.' He scolded himself for taking the hit.
The boy ran off to get his axe back and showed no signs of slowing down now. He groaned, his mounting enthusiasm for the fight had thoroughly been thrashed after that hit, he now felt like he did upon entering the arena but now he was bleeding on top of it.
Zael watched from the audience biting his lip. He betted money on his pal but he was starting to question having done that. That one wound looked to have turned the tide and he could see the light of bloodlust having left him. "Don't you dare lose to that brat damn it!" He shouted from the stands, not that anyone could hear him in the arena.
The real cause for concern however came in the form of a black and red wyvern that began to circle overhead. "Hel?" Angrim questioned. "Ah hell!" He must have smelled the blood of his master and come to aid him. Now was not the time for this though. The beast circled above screeching out cries of challenge before landing on one of the pillars and crying out at Wei.
At the same time the boy had begun to charge and things were happening far too fast to control. 'Why me? First that Zarathustra nutjob, now the match just got hectic.' Angrim truly lamented his ill fortune. If he had to put a letter to his luck, it was surely an E.

"Alright lets rip his head off", spoke Wei to himself as he charged forward. That was not his actual plan, but he still liked the sound of it. The boy was aiming to finish the fight soon. He was still bleeding form his side and his nose was still bloody. If he had to guess it was probably broke. His entire body screamed in pain from the repeated blows and moving. However Wei was pumped up at the moment and his mind was able to ignore all of that. Charing forward like a wild boar Wei would be on his opponent in minutes. He had already planned out his assault. he would begin first with a double strike with both axes and then dodge in accordance with the mans next attack. he would work his way into a circle till the man left a opening and then move in. He expected to mess up a bit on the way, but he was sure that he could win. He had gotten a good blow in earlier and as a result victory seemed possible. It was a true pity all of Wei's planning went out the window in a meer moment.
The sound of a scream filled the air and cold shivers ran down Wei's spine. The young boy stopped dead in his tracks only three yards from his opponent. His stared up toward the top of the arena and his heart began to race a thousand miles a hour. It was Wei first time seeing a actual Wyvern. The way the beast stared down at him and bore its fangs melted the courage in his heart. "Wha...wha...what is that", whispered Wei in complete horror. His voice pulled to the back of his throat out of fear of sending the beast against him. At the moment Wei had no mind toward his enemy in the arean. His eyes were focus on the beast and the beast alone.

If not for the saddle and barding on the wyvern's back it would have surely been fired upon by guards. The presence of the beast however could not be ignored. It was an interruption and angry, making it a problem and a danger on top.
"Hel! Heel!" Angrim shouted. The beast rounded its long neck towards his master and sniffed, truly identifying the blood as his. It instantly turned and rounded on Wei shrieking a challenge. "Boy, get out of here! I will handle it!" The pillars were too close together for the beast to land on the ground level but it had a long neck, longer than most wyverns and it snapped down at the boy. It just came up short of him. Angrim rushed in holding up his hands.
"Hel! It is me, I am fine! Down!" The wyvern slowed and retracted its head. Holding up a hand he allowed the wyvern to sniff. "See, I'm fine. This was a game match."
"And one, you have forfeited! Get that damned beast out of here and you as well!" One of the guards furiously yelled at Angrim before announcing the boy winner by default. He was likely to win regardless, but his victory was stolen right from underneath him. What should have been decisive was degraded.
Angrim offered him an apologetic look before grabbing onto Hel's harness and being pulled up by it. "Ah!" He winced at the pain. "Kid, this match was yours, but if you want to go another round, I'm in the area. Yah!" With a crack of the reins he was off, flying in the sky.
"What is your name kid?" One of the guards asked. He was about to announce him as the winner.
