"I am fine", shouted Wei trying to play the tough guy! The pain from his arm as he attempted to jerk away from the bald dark skin man caused him to give off a disgraceful welp. The pride soon left the boy as he looked toward Appus. "I can walk", he spoke as he pulled himself off the ground. Another beast appeared form the woods and began to make a path toward the group. Its path however was cut off as a mercenary from the other side of the cart rushed over with his sword held the wrong way. using the blade in the half-swording style the man slammed the end of his guard down onto the head of the beast with great force. The blow cracked the monster skull and sent it wailing onto the ground.
"Quick finish it", came a cry as a archer fired of two silver arrows into the beast body. The monster began to shake a few times and then it killed over.
"Hopefully that is the last of them", spoke the leader of the caravan. From around the caravan came a healer who immediately began to work on wei's arm.
"What took you guys so long", chuckled Wei as the pain began to leave his arm.
"Sorry but the bulk of the enemy horde was on the other side", he spoke as he looked at the corpses they had left behind. However it seems like you all took care of the trouble on this side.
"They even saved the horses", spoke another man.
"What where those things anyway", spoke another guard.
" Mauthe Doog", chuckled a Well informed mercenary as he began to study the fallen corpses. "Monsters, and one of the foulest if you asked me."
"No wonder they were resistant to me blade", spoke another.
"You need Silver right", huffed Wei as the healer continued his work on his arm.

Appius looked to the more educated mercenary. So these were 'Mauthe Doogs,' huh? What a curious name. Bur it confirmed his suspicions that these hounds were indeed nothing like regular wolves and pack animals. Perhaps they were some cross between an undead being and a revenant. That might explain their resilience and weakness towards silver. But understanding these animals did not subside what a threat they were. The only change was that Appius knew what cautionary measures to take against this threat. "While they may be resistant towards regular arms, it would appear that they also bear a weakness towards blunt damage along with that towards silver," the saracen stated, looking out to side of the forest nearest himself in fear of these beasts appearing once again. Yet this frightened state did not manifest itself, Appius' face locked into a perpetual scowl as was the same before he and Wei's battle. After all, he was hired as a guard, not to weep like some pansy. And following orders took priority over any personal or mortal ties.
To think he needed to resort to bashing in the enemy's head with a stone. What was he, a neandarthal? Appius shamed himself for being so unskilled that he was unable to so much as shave the hounds' hide with his blade. This was nothing but disrespect to his mother. But, again, it was not the grace of the act which mattered. He was able to fell the creature and that was that. So, while an unelegant one, this battle was a victory all the same. He and Wei had even been able to prevent any damage to the cargo. Perhaps he should not doubt this boy's skill. Wei had shown a level of determination which Appius had thought impossible in boys his age.

After the priest finished attending to Wei's wounds the entire caravan began to move out again. Wei's arm still hurt, there was no way to completely stop the pain, but it would be back to normal in a day or two. The efforts of the trio had saved a good bit of cargo and a few of the horses, so the leader of the caravan had thanked them personally. At the time however thanks were the least of there worries. They were still in the open and on the road. Worde was still filled with monsters. The beast were known to attack at any given time, even more so after another group of beast had just tried there chance. As a result the entire caravan was on high alert for the next two days. They finally calmed down when they reached the nearby village which was Wei's destination.
"Hey Appus", shouted Wei as he hopped off the cart. He had spent the last to days watching the forest and asking around. Beforehand he really did not know how the mercenary was, but after the scrap with the hell hounds he made it a point to remember. The man had saved his life after all, on more than one occasion.
"Hey man, I wanted to thank you for saving my hide back there two days ago. You and the mage were both on the other side of the caravan with the others. You did not have to swing around to my side and assist me. If you did not I would have been ripped to little pieces, so I wanted to give you my thannks. I have seen a lot of warriors since I left home, but you are one of the few who actually gives a crap about others. So if you ever find yourself in Thria, you can look up a guardsmen by the name of Jin. That is my pah, I am sure he will help you out."

Despite the thanks he had received from the caravan leader, Appius remained ever vigilant through the course of the next two days. Those that saw him would note that he really didn't speak at all unless spoken to or was issuing orders to other fighters. Though to the other mercenaries he may have appeared to be a real pain, truly Appius was just as wary as anyone of the dangers which lurked in Worde. Perhaps to an extent that could be considered paranoid.
Yet as he stepped off of the wagon in the nearby village the caravan had arrived in, an unfamiliar sense of relief filled him. It was then that he internally compared this to his travels with Poia, finding a sliver of joy in that. Yet Appius was surprised to hear his name called from behind. By none other than the same voice he had become familiar with days ago.
"Hmm?" Appius turned to Wei as his name was called, standing with his targe at his side as usual with the scimitar he had used to strike down the hounds which Wei mentioned now within its black oaken scabbard. "I thank you for your offer," the bald man said, hearing Wei finish. Despite his gratitude, however, a scowl remained upon his face as if it had been glued that way. "It was only my orders to protect those of this caravan though. So do not thank me for guarding yourself. However, that does not diminish my newfound admiration for you. Though you lack strength and skill with youth, you have a spirit far greater than most men I have met. That much is apparent."

Wei did not like it. He did not like being called weak and unskilled. Wei always thought of himself as strong, but the glaring truth has been hanging in front of him since he first left home. Wei was weak. It was not that he did not train enough or that he did not have the determination, it was simply that he was young. His muscles had not matured and he had not been pushed enough to develop the power and strength others had. Appus words were true. He was weak in both skill and strength. However the man had given him a complement toward his spirit. Wei was a fighter and that fighting spirit would push him on. He took solace in that.
"Thanks...", murmured Wei. The young boy looked up into the mercenaries eyes. His focus was iron and his expression stoic. "The next time we meet, I will be much stronger. You can bet money on that. Then I can give you a hand", spoke the journeyman before he walked off. The young boy still needed to thank the mage who had helped him as well, but in truth he had said his full to the bald man. Wei was going to get stronger and he was going to show that man just how strong he could get. It was not that Wei held a grudge against him, but he wanted him to see just how strong he could be.
As Wei moved to find and thank the mage he took a moment to memorize the city. It was a quite little town with a decent wall. It was safe enough to eat and sleep in, but dangerous enough that he figured that he would be called back to this village again. Maybe next time all three of them can meet again and share stories, and Wei won't be the weakling everyone needed to back up. "Next time for sure", spoke Wei as he was off to find the mage.

Appius gave a nod as Wei said his goodbye. Yet, as the boy turned away, he couldn't help but smirk. Feeling that rare happiness. But than again, any true emotions were just as rare. He knew feeling could be the downfall of a warrior, yet he believed it was tolerable since the danger of Worde's had passed. That was, at least for the time.
Appius was struck with this feeble joy in seeing that Wei, in all honestly, was much like himself at such a young age. Determined to grow stronger all for the sake of spiting those who had doubted them. Yet they had a deep contrast. For he had spent his youth cowering behind his mother, as if there had been an invisible umbilical still attatching them, whilst Wei was out in the world on his own. So Appius was assured that the boy would, inevitably, become far more skilled than himself.
The dark-skinned man's expression returned to that of a scowl. For there was still a job to do. Regardless of his victory days ago, Appius now needed to be more cautious than ever. Why, if there were dogs with a man's height in Worde, there was no telling what could appear next he was hired. Turning back to the caravan, Appius sought to aid in unloading cargo from the wagons, as he was still being paid after all.
