While they traveled north one of the soldiers spoke with Hal. He had asked what he could do combat wise, nothing he responded. But he did kinda know how to ride a horse a little. "But I don't know anything about fighting, I signed up just yesterday to be a flier."
"But you need basic mounted combat experience, we're not going to risk your life and losing a wyvern because you don't know how to fight upon a mount. To use a lance just take the sharp end and stab it into the other person and avoid their attacks and you'll do fine." "Sure sounds easy enough but I can't do that."
He was reassigned to the 3rd light Calvary unit for the time being, till he could grasp the concept of mounted combat. Hal went got closer to where Sarah was, "I was reassigned. I'm apart of the light Calvary for now. I... I... I don't think I'm ready for this." He spoke with fear in his voice, he was scared and nervous. Other then using a kid brother as a punchbag or an older sibling doing that to him he had no real fighting experience.

Sarah was shaking. It was a bit hard to see under her armor, but she was. Her first battle, the first time she'd have to fight someone else for real.
She'd had some basic weapon training, and she had been deemed 'acceptable' with a lance according to Alther, but this was something new altogether.
She had been given a horse, specifically because she'd known how to ride them since she was about five. But that was a pony. Hopefully the difference in riding was only cosmetic. Sarah was knocked out of her introspection when Hal spoke to her.
"I was reassigned. I'm apart of the light Calvary for now. I... I... I don't think I'm ready for this."
Sarah's eyes welled up with tears. "I don't think I am either. This is scary, Hal." she whispered. Sarah didn't want the other soldiers to see her crying, but it was hard not to. "I guess we can...look out for each other."

Hal had seen the tears start to form in Sarah's eyes, he could tell one of the reasons she joined was because of her parents. He still wasn't wearing any armor, they STILL haven't issued him any hopefully that will be soon. He put his arms around Sarah and pulled her close and whispered into her ear.
"You're farther along in any type of training then me you should do fine." At this point Sarah should be able to feel the tremble of fear in Hal's arms. "We're both newbies, we can't look bad before the fight, use this chance to wipe the tears from your eyes on my shirt. But please, be strong... for the both of us."

"Okay..." Sarah whispered. She rubbed her eyes on his shirt, making sure nobody saw, and then straightened back up. She managed to make a small smile. "I think I can... " she muttered. Sarah let out a deep exhale and shook herself. "I'll be strong. If you're here, I know I'll be able to fight." she said to Hal.

He knew others noticed their little hug as second ago."Thank you Sarah for comforting me like that." He had smiled at her closing his eyes for a second."If she's to follow in the footsteps of her parents she can't start off looking like a coward. I've gotta help her reach her goal as well as mine. To be the very best, like no ever was!" He opened his eyes still looking at Sarah.
"I gotta talk to somebody about getting armor of some sort, I'd be an easy target like this. I can't let you out live me eh?" Hal winked at her as the wagon stopped. "We're here. Everybody outside now." Hal got up and exited the wagon, he wasn't going to wait for Sarah this time. He went to an officer and tapped him on the shoulder. "Um, excuse me sir." he looked at Hal. "I joined yesterday and was given this uniform but no armor, is it possible for me to get some?" He talked to somebody, they nodded and returned after a couple of minutes with some leather armor and handed it to Hal.
Bummer, he got some leather armor when he was hoping for something like what Sarah wore. He quickly put it back on and started to look for Sarah once again.

Sarah blushed slightly and covered her face before putting her feet squarely on the ground. She moved a bit away from the main group and removed her lance from its holding. She was going to use this time to practice a little.
Sarah thought back to Alther's advice. Don't put all the strain on your arms and back. Your hips are useful when mounted. She jabbed out and twisted herself away, as if dodging an invisible attack. It worked quite well. She barely felt any fatigue. If I can do this at least twenty times fast, I'll be half-decent at fighting, she told herself. Sarah tucked her hair back and began to test her thrusts again.

Hal walked around the crowd, everybody looked the same now. He thought he wouldn't find Sarah before they begin the assault. "You boy, you're Hal Kailas right?" "Ye-yeah that would be me." he said nervously "Here's your lance, meet the rest of your squad over there you guys head out in five minutes. Do us proud boy."
Fight? Now? But he didn't want to, he wanted to learn how to fly and then get his wyvern and live out the days flying on patrol till he left the army, that's if he couldn't find Alan. He was shown to his horse and helped to be mounted. "You know how to ride one of these boy?" "I have a few times in the past sir." "Good, don't die out there boy."
Hal's squad started to ride towards the enemy base, a guard spotted the group and blew a whistle. "Hold your heads up boys, we're just the first group sent in, a few are a few paces behind us." Hal's gave the horse the command to speed up, he was in front of his group and saw his target.
He was advancing too fast for the man to react, Hal thrust his slim lance into his chest but didn't pull back. He kept his hold on the lance and was torn off the horse, standing up he took his lance out of the corpse as his comrades came charging by. He was going to have to engage the enemy on foot now.

Sarah mounted her horse and tucked her lance away, ready to do whatever she was assigned. A man rode up to her and pointed her to a group of other riders. "You're Dulcimer, right? Okay, go with the rest of them. You're with the reinforcements. If we get low on numbers, you and the rest of that group will be sent in." he said. Sarah nodded timidly and joined the 'reinforcements'. She strained her neck to get a good view of the battle's beginning, but it was so hard to make out.

Hal looked around and saw they were surrounding him. Easier to single out the one on foot right? His group made a U turn and charged in some engaging the ones who were going to attack Hal. They were nuts sending in a kid with latterly zero experience. Next thing he knew he was being lifted onto a horse. His commander picked him up and helped in on the back. "Just worry about killing the other men and holding on. I knew some of my men were green but not this fresh. Stab and pull kid, stab and pull."
The two had charged into the fray again, this time more of the enemy soldiers poured in. Hal was able to wound one or two, he wasn't sure, before he felt the sharp pain of a lance catching his leg.

"Hal!" Sarah shouted. She had seen it immediately. She spurred her horse forward and awkwardly clutched at her lance. She rode too quickly and was in the battle before she had time to properly prepare herself. She squirmed her body around to dodge wild blows and immediately regretted her spontaneous decision.
Jab and twist. Jab and twist. Just like Alther said.
Sarah stuck her lance out and, to her surprise, pierced an enemy's horse. She tugged her lance back and, just like she'd practiced, twisted her body away from that direction. Unfortunately, this meant that she was moving her shoulder directly towards another incoming attack. Sarah felt the enemy's sword hit her arm, and immediately pulled away. It didn't hurt too bad...although it was bleeding quite a bit. "Hal! Are you okay?" Sarah shouted as she tugged a vulnerary from its pouch and applied it to her arm.

So little time had passed for Kyro, and yet listing the events of the past week was getting harder. Starting on his delivery so long ago, he had tried (and failed, it seemed) to find one of the most infamous men on the continent; met with the extremely eccentric Elias (The Crimson Mage!) and added the mage to his little "group"; found and participated in a rebellion in the Herald's own ranks; and had just delivered a message from an Etrurian to the leaders of Ilia. Now he seemed to be dropping directly into a battle he had hoped never to fight. So Ariston told the truth...there seems to be a fight going on, the wyvern rider thought as he surveyed the ensuing carnage. Immediately finding the commanding officers against the rebels, he nudged Aiyer down toward them. "It looks like we'll be making our names here after all, Elias!" He shouted above the wind as the dive deepened. The moment they landed, Kyro stiffened his demeanor. "Am I on time?"
The officer's guards had tensed as they dove, but relaxed slightly when they recognized an ally. A man--apparently the highest officer present, based on the berth the others gave him--stepped forward and addressed the new pair. "It would seem so, soldier. Your name?"
"Kyro. This is Elias, a mage of Lycia. I was away delivering a message to the Inquisitorial army and only just returned. What's the situation?" A chuckle. “If you’ll believe it, we’re in the middle of a battle. If you’re asking what you can do, you can start causing havoc. Your friend the mage can start firing from back here, if he’d like to fight.” “Will do, sir.” With a nod and a, “Do as he says,” to Elias, Kyro mounted Aiyer and took off.
Down on the chaotic field, the rebels and the Ilians were divided into two lines as they clashed on horseback and on foot. In the sky, however, the Ilians commanded the area, with only a few rebel wyverns fighting frantically against their opponents. Those that weren’t tied up in the sky continually harried the ground troops, Kyro among them. What a mess. Fighting excited him, but recognizing every third or fourth person on the enemy side bittered the experience more than normal bloodshed. Even so, his lance wouldn’t pause, and so it didn’t.

Dismissed! Rejected! Publicly humiliated! Why it's more then I can bear! He shortly raged after being booted off the wyvern, but quickly dropped that anger and instead looked around. There were a lot of people fighting and he didn't really know why... but he did know he had a job. A job to blast people with his magic. Perfect! That's exactly what The Crimson Mage excelled at!
"Just point me in the right direction! I will make these people regret... um... whatever they did. The Crimson Mage will rain Firey Justice upon them!" He announced loudly, and flared his arms out, his cape shifting with the sudden movement and slightly floundering behind him.
"Right..." The man looked at him strangely, doubting this man could even be a mage... but now was not the time to be picky and his erm... enthusiasm? His enthusiasm was admirable at least. "Talk to other mages." His voice was stern as he pointed in the general direction of fellow magic users.
"Hello men I am..." He began again.
"Yes, we heard." An irritated shaman said quite deadpan. "I'm Elzham, and you, you're going to help. So get ready and shut up. We are to support the melee fighters. You can do that right? If you can't, then there's no point in talking to you." He looked busy, and sounded even busier.
"But of course, I'm ski-"
"Shut up and fire then." This guy was no fun... A sphere of flame gathered in his hand, he felt about fancying it up a bit more. Fire is cool, and there's a lot of potential to make it even cooler! Though... that stare from Elzham told him that the answer was no, before he could even ask. Elias grumbled and flung the boring fire in sync with the other mages at Elzham's signal.

It had all happened so quickly.
Sarah had been trying to adjust herself on her saddle when an enemy, from out of nowhere, started attacking her. She hadn't been hit, but her horse... Now Sarah was on the ground, her helmet having protected her head from the nasty fall. Her lance was still in her hand, and her equipment was fine in general, but...her horse.
Sarah ducked away from the main fighting area- now she was on the edge, where she was less likely to be noticed. She adjusted her helmet and started to think. Why am I here?...I should be at home. Reading. This is the worst day in my life... Sarah scanned the battlefield and felt herself feeling angry. Angry at the Ilians. Angry at herself. Why fight for the Ilians, anyway? She had no loyalty to them.
Normally, betrayal was not something that Sarah would consider. But she was alone. No Kessel. No Alther. No Hal. Her brothers weren't there either. And she wouldn't have to fight any of them if she didn't want to, would she? No. Not at all. So Sarah braced herself and ran towards the rebel group, her lance tucked behind her back. She passed by a few people fighting, and quite a few corpses. One of them was a man in distinct wyvern rider armor...That made Sarah nervous. Where was his wyvern?
Said nervousness prevented Sarah from noticing the shouting around her. But she quickly noticed the large shadow looming over her. She quickly sprinted out of the way, just in time to avoid a large Wyvern landing on her, although the impact of the landing caused her to fall down. She looked up...and was in awe. The wyvern was green, and its rider was wearing glorious red armor.
Sarah heard several cries and looked over to see some rebel soldiers charging towards the wyvern. The rider turned his mount over to face them. He grabbed a javelin and threw it out, piercing one of the soldiers and killing him. Sarah no longer admired him. She struggled to stand up, and by the time she was ready to start running, the rider had more or less mopped up the soldiers. Either they were really inexperienced...or he's really good, Sarah thought.
The wyvern reared over and looked at her. It let out a shriek, and its rider turned his head too. Sarah's heart stopped. The rider grabbed a javelin, and Sarah knew it was all over. She had zero experience, and he was strong...even if he missed once, he would definitely be fast enough to get her a second time. Face death with dignity, at least. Don't run. Sarah closed her eyes.
She heard another shriek, and assumed that the wyvern was getting ready to do something. But this shriek was different. It was higher-pitched, and not quite as strong. Sarah opened her eyes and looked up. A blue wyvern, smaller than the enemy one, was looming over her. It looked down at her and let out a shriek, this one much quieter. Sarah didn't know what that meant, but she saw reigns on the wyvern.
Well, it was worth a shot.
She climbed up onto the blue wyvern and, to her immense relief, it didn't fling her off and try to eat her. Step one, complete. Step two...well, that wyvern rider is still there. Sarah gripped her lance. Blessed Hartmut, she had been given a chance out of nowhere. Whoever's wyvern this was, she'd return it eventually. But right now, she had to beat, or at least survive, this guy. Maybe those soldiers had softened him up a little?
Sarah's wyvern let out its high-pitched shriek again, and was met with the enemy wyvern's louder shriek.
It was time.

As things tended to happen, everything went well until it all hit the fan. So it was that Kyro and Aiyer found themselves in the midst of enemies. Quite a few troops, but no organization, the rider observed as enemies and friendlies weaved around them erratically. The Ilian troops seemed the pinnacle of discipline compared to their opponents, ranking up and breaking ranks smoothly as the latter flowed through various improvised--and unworkable--formations. Within minutes, the rebels were in retreat, at least in the general area. Most of our superior officers must have stayed loyal, or this fight would be- The soldier heard a leathery flap, pivoted, and found himself shoved out of his saddle. Stunned, he looked at his attacker to see... "Xander." "Kyro. Back again from your little trip? While you were demeaning our entire organization, we've been a little busy." Even without the response, the other rider was unmistakable: shiny, ridged lack armor covered him completely, not to the mention the enormous wyvern he rode; Stiletto had always been a spectacle. "Meet me topside, if the little page hasn't softened up." With gibe complete, Xander nudged Stiletto away from a snapping Aiyer into the sky. I should have known. Rash as ever... The enemy gone, the other soldiers hauled Kyro to his feet, exchanging worried looks and asking about him. He didn't catch the words. "Hmm? Oh, fine. Nothing was injured." Time for medical attention later. Pulling away, Kyro climbed aboard his wyvern, noting that a stirrup had broken, and followed his opponent. Only one thing bothered him. Xander was the only wyvern rider that had a perfect combat record in training. In simpler terms, he had never lost a sparring match. "You worried me," said prodigy called. "I thought you really had gone soft, with the time it took you to recover." Kyro refused to banter and swung forward. The black-armored rider blocked immediately as Aiyer and Stiletto grappled. They broke apart to recover, righting themselves as quickly as they had attacked. The clash took only a few seconds, but both wyverns showed the effects; the larger from a bite to the wing, the smaller from numerous scratches and from the previous skirmishes. Neither rider had been injured. Three more clashes came before a blow connected, and Kyro surprised both of them by landing it. Xander’s style of plate armor left plenty of gaps, so had Kyro had exploited what he remembered. It had worked, and, damage done, Aiyer pulled away, nearly yanking his master in two as the latter’s lance stuck. Without time for thought, a lance pierced the Ilian rider’s side after whipping down his face. No sound escaped; caught up in memories of sparring matches, the reality of the combat seemed distant, even incredible. Not any longer. Continuing to advance, Xander struck his opponent with the shaft of the heavy lance, causing Aiyer to adjust his weight…putting him below Stiletto…shifting the advantage. Victory in reach, the bulkier wyvern and rider tore after their frantically descending foes. On reflex, seeking only to end the charge, the lower rider reeled back and threw his lance upward. The charge stopped as the charger caught the lance easily in its mouth. “Go, go-“ again the wounded Bernese rider heard an unusual sound. This time, a whistle as a lance was tossed easily to him. A bewildered glance caught Xander staring at him and pointedly patting his mount. With a final glance around the torn battlefield, the rebel rider flashed across the sky out of sight. Shrieks sounded from below. It remained as one of the only sounds on the still war-zone. All fighting seemed to have ceased. “Down, Ai.” On command, they resumed their landing, Kyro wearily nudging them in the direction of the sounds. The sight of the two riders squaring off brought forth a question: how, when both armies wore the same colors, does one tell their allegiance when the smoke cleared? Answer, at least for this instance: the condition of their armor. With the exception of Xander (Kyro clutched his side at the thought) most of the rebels had worn gear that seemed purposely smudged in certain areas. Without realizing it, most of the Ilian fighters had telegraphed toward these units. Neither of the riders before him had been smudged. So why fight? “Stop!” The shout was tired but loud, causing the soldier on the ground and the wyvern in the air to turn sharply. “She’s a friendly. I’ll deal with her.” Fumbling for the miniature flag and producing it satisfied the grounded rider, who took off with cautious nod. Such a mess. Grasping at a grin, Kyro motioned toward the base camp. “You look pretty tired. Have you had enough fighting yet?” She seemed new enough, but even an old hand would hardly make Kyro pause; the time, patience, and discipline of respect had disappeared long ago, stripping him of all formality.

Sarah was too shocked to say anything when the rider confronting her flew off. Today must've been her lucky day. The boy who had shooed the man off approached her and pointed towards one of the camps, but she hadn't noticed. Sarah's eyes narrowed slightly. "I've had enough fighting for a lifetime. Are you with the Ilians or the rebels? Because I have every intention of taking my country back, even if I have to go through you, the other guy, and all of the others." she said. Sarah tried to sound confident, but her voice quivered, very noticeably. The fact that she was clearly struggling to stay on her saddle probably didn't help, either. "Well?" she asked.
