So I've been reading the lore, the rules and such much more thoroughly than before, and I came up with this character. Hope you like it!
If possible, I would like to not start with a flux tome, as I would prefer acquiring one in an post rather than automatically.
Also, I was messaging with Ilheod and he said that my character could PROBABLY start with a Nosferatu tome AS LONG AS:
- I understand it's a universally hated tome, as well as dark magic being pretty unpopular
- I DO NOT under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES use the tome until I have bought it.
If any part of this doesn't work please tell me and explain why so I can fix it.
Name: Thorne
Class: Pupil (Dark)
Age: 13
Born in: Etruria
Appearance:
Thorne is a small, slim boy dressed in a worn black mage’s robe with short, brilliant violet hair. He also has a rather large pouch hung on his left hip, which contains his old family spell book and his notes on his studies of magic and Elibe as a whole.
Personality:
Thorne is a very cheery child. He isn’t too put off by his public reception of using "evil" magic. His main drive in life is to help people, which he thinks he can accomplish best by becoming a powerful mage. Dark magic was just the best choice in his eyes. He does odd jobs for spare food and coin such as deliveries and manual labor. He never stays in one place for long, mainly because he loves exploring and wandering in places he's never been before. He is offended by the term ‘dark’ magic and prefers ‘elder’ magic. He is eccentric, stubborn, and can be somewhat annoying. However, he is also empathetic and clever. He has a large fondness for baked goods such as bread rolls and pastries. He has very good luck when getting out of trouble, but not so much when getting into the situations in the first place. Thorne spends a lot of time thinking and pondering, and drifts off or "daydreams" fairly often, especially while traveling. On a related note, he has a bad sense of direction, and ends up wandering randomly whenever he travels. His worst enemies, ironically, are thorn bushes.
History:
Thorne grew up in a family of dark magic users inside a cave in Etruria near the Etruria-Sacae border. They lived peacefully, not leaving their home often due to the fact they were a long family line of users of the Nosferatu tome. Only the experienced family veterans went out regularly, to hunt and trade with people across the border. Thorne learned little of the outside world, but he was taught about magic by his family and given plenty of old and outdated study material. If all had gone normal, Thorne would have left the cave as a knowledgeable dark-magic caster to get some real world knowledge and learn about the outside world.
However, when Thorne was still young, an adventurer was attacked by a bear outside the cave. Thorne's family saved them using dark magic. Unfortunately, they were seen using Nosferatu by some hunters, and the word was out that there were ‘evil dark magic mages’ hiding by the border. Soon after, a manhunt was led by a powerful user of light magic to eradicate Thorne’s family.
The mob arrived at midnight, demanding nothing short of blood. Thorne’s parents tried to surrender, but the strong light magic caster murdered them in cold blood. Thorne barely managed to escape, with only his clothes and his Nosferatu book he inherited from his father. He ran, ran until he was past the borderand into Sacae before collapsing. He was found by a nearby tribe who sheltered him for a while, before he left of his own accord.
Thorne soon repressed everything about the encounter he could. He now remembers literally nothing about the event, and he only remembers bits and pieces about his family. He started to believe that he had been traveling his whole life, to help people in need. In order to do that as best as he could he needed to become a master of dark magic. He needed to find someone to teach him, so he traveled across Elibe, seeking food and shelter wherever he went. He studied along the way, slowly recovering his talent for magic. Unfortunately, it seemed as if the heroes and spellcasters had slowly been disappearing from the land, until all of Thorne’s leads on potential mentors had dried up.
Never giving up, he currently wanders through Elibe looking for new leads.
NPC fight:
Thorne was… not prepared to fight the axe-wielding bandit in front of him. He hadn’t even been in the small Lycian village long before a local thug came to relieve him of his possessions. There was no way he was going to be able to win via real combat, so he referred to his favorite strategies, the Triangle of Anti-Combat: sneak, speech and sprint. There was nowhere to run, so that wouldn’t help. Speech was always a last gambit. Hiding would just prolong the battle… which he would gladly do. It may be a bit of a coward move, but there’s a reason he’s survived so long. Thorne leaped into a clumsy roll, landing in a bush. The bandit, thinking he had cornered the purple-haired boy, slowly advanced.
Thorne tried to think of a plan. Unfortunately, while he was somewhat cunning, he wasn’t very calm and coordinated, so all he think of was those delicious pastries he had somewhere in Ilia. Mmmmm. Where was that again? It was snowy there would that help? No, the entirety of Ilia was all snow. Maybe if he just gave one to the bandit, then he wo- oh yeah, the bandit. The bandit was getting e-ve-r so closer, and Thorne was getting e-ve-r so panicked. What else did he have? Some scattered coins, his tome and research notes, some breadcrumbs from last night, and… What was this?
Thorne pulled a dagger out of his hip-pouch. Where did he get that? Maybe from that one town with the shady alleyways... Oh well, no time for that. Thorne didn’t know how to fight with a dagger, but he definitely could hold it threateningly and pretend he knew how to use it. He popped his head out of the bush and pointed the dagger at his foe, trying to come up with a threat.
“Back off! Get away, or else I’ll… stab you! In the… uh… knees!”
For a moment, it looked as if his crazy plan was going to work. The bandit stopped moving closer, and looked almost slightly alarmed. But it was too good to be true. He called Thorne’s bluff and charged at him, tackling Thorne to the ground. Welp, that was worth a shot. It looked bad, but trouble was the sort of thing he was good at getting out of.
(do you want me to finish this?)
PC fight:
As Thorne eyed the fighter in front of him, he noticed that they were getting smaller. Why was that? Hmm, there weren’t any spells that did that, or were there? Maybe he should check his notes…
Nope, no, not gonna do it. This was a serious fight and he would not sit down in the middle of it to read and why was the fighter still getting smaller?! Thorne looked down, and saw… oh. He was running away. After a small sigh, he forced himself to stop. What was he supposed to do? He needed more practice with speech, running was probably not a great choice for the situation, and it would take a miracle for him to ever learn how to hide very well.
So, how was he going to get out of this? Maybe he should feign innocence or a disability - yes, that was a good one. He could feign deafness! What would a deaf person do? They would… probably not be in a combat situation of any kind, so that probably wouldn’t work. What was that noise?
Oh no, his opponent had caught up to him. Welp, good fight everybody. You can go home, it's all over. He mustered up his courage in a very last ditch effort and spoke.
“U-Uh, hello? My name is Thorne, and I’m…uhhh (oh I'm so screwed) uhhh... deaf?”
(since Thorne doesn't have flux/can't use it well yet there's no way he could win normally so this will have to do)
P.S. Could someone please delete my old character post? It's old and cringy and I hate it
