There was one good outcome to the land being covered by ash, Reid could use it to track the path he had took to get here in his trance. He pulled his coat all the up and buttoned it as well as crossed his arms, he wasn't cold but thinking of that voice calling out to him sent chills down his spine. If hearing something calling out to him in his mind in a barren wasteland wasn't scary enough, he felt as if it wasn't the first time he heard that voice.
The voice didn't become louder until he had started to cast a spell. It had demand that he fed it more. Doh, how could he forget about that? Something that he had heard many times that casting Elder magic over a long period of time the caster would eventually become an empty shell because their mind is lost to something. That's why people call it 'dark magic', it's destructive nature to the caster. It is also true there's no real evidence that is the truth, it could be a coincidence that it happens to Elder Magic users, but still the day he had made a 'pact' with something he had heard that same voice. After that moment he had been able to cast Elder Magic. He hasn't heard that voice since then, but why is it calling out to him now?
Since now he wasn't walking in a trance, his pace was much faster so it didn't take long for him to reach the point he had wondered off. He had began to follow the group's path, it wasn't long before he saw them off in the distance.

Edrick examined the footprints as Elias spoke up."Well if he did wander off to take care of business then he would have told us. Or at least he should have. I don't think he would wander off from sheer boredom though, that would just be a bad idea to do." Wander off here? What would make Reid do such a thing? He didn't seem like the the kind of person that would do something so reckless like that out here. He just seemed like the kind of person that liked being alone, and alone was dangerous out here.
Elias then started asking about 'tracking' those that use Elder magic based on the magical traces they left behind. That would be. . . complicated to say the least. Dark magic was usually a different pool all together. Although some could have part of the darkness within them. Something that he knew a little bit of himself. But tracking them based on that? That was something he had no real idea how to do. "Um. . ." He mumbles as his had reaches up to scratch the back of his head. "I don't think it is that easy to track those that use Elder magic just based on the nature of it. Mest people connect to an infinite pool of energy that they draw upon. So any way of tracking elder magic users is lost to me. I think I know more about the other types of magic at this point. Especially since Elder magic is really hard to, erm, well, anything. " It was kinda awkward to admit but Anima and Light magic were much easier to under stand and he has been more exposed to those in his life and Staffs are, well, Erm, staffs. Staffs were also weird. There was one way he could see to track Elder mages by their magic uses but he had no idea how to do it."Buuuuuut, unless he learned to fly I think footprints might work as well."
Then the not new girl, the one whose name he keeps forgetting, spoke up about not being able to track well. And the new girl Mila said that she could track prints. He himself wasn't really a tracker but how hard could following prints be? right? It couldn't be that hard. People do it all the time apparently. But it was good that someone new how to actually track prints in case he was horribly wrong about how easy it was. "You can track?" He asked Mila. "That's good!" and he nodded along in understanding as she spoke about the tracks. It turned out that it was more complicated than he thought, but not too hard. Maybe he could get her to show him later.
After a while, Edrick got tired of being hunched over, examining the footprints. So he stood up straight and placed his hands on the back part of his hips and twisted his torso a little to help loosed up his bunched up lower back muscles. As he did so something caught his attention out of the corner of his eye. He turned and rose a hand up to shield his eyes from getting too much light as he looked over what it was. It looked like Reid? "Hey guys I think I see him." He said as he began to try to wave Reid over to the group. Looks like they would be able to get back to their research now that Reid wasn't wandering around alone.

Footprints? What a primitive unscientific solution, bah. And Edboy called himself a researcher, a true researcher would come up with a lot of impressive sounding words that amount to nothing, and since none of them used elder magic none of them could contradict him. He could have come up with Edboy's theorem that would be researched for years to come! Future students of magic would scratch their heads in wonder of the babble he spoke right here and now, but instead it was footprints. Though maybe it said something about Elias that he jumped right to complex magical resonance tracking and ignored the much more obvious and practical physical imprints left behind in the earth with his movements. "Really it isn't? That's a bummer. I thought you guys like had some magical link like a big shadowy umbilical cord or something. That'd be cool, since all dark magic users draw from the same source, unlike anima and divine magic which pull their power from more local magical sources that are seperate from one another. One shaman's flux spell is powered by the nether, just as the other's right? Compared to a mage casting a fire spell with the local spirits in the area about them. Different spirits that may have different quirks about them, and... Actually I suppose it doesn't matter really. I guess that just one theory I need to stow away. Wouldn't be the first." He touched his chin thoughtfully, tilting his head a touch. Finally he just shrugged and said 'whatever' with his body, if not with his words.
"So footprints, yeah? Go get'em." He dropped his hand to his side and sort of gestured forward with his staff in his other hand. Was he holding his staff before? Well if he wasn't, he was now. Imagine it happened when everyone was all busy talking about physical based tracking like plebeians. "Never really had to track before myself, I'm too much of a fan of blowing things up to take the slow and steady approach. Had a friend named Mana who was great at that sorta stuff. She could track ANYTHING." He said, speaking aloud though no one quite asked. He just sort of followed the others as they did their thing, sure this could be a learning opportunity to gather skills useful for survival or blah blah something like that, but he only had a limited amount of things he could know and he's sorry but proper cross-stitching is far more important.
He sort of looked around with a lazy look in his eyes, taking it slower then he was comfortable with. His mind began to wander, well wander farther off the beaten path then it normally does that is. They were here to study monsters, but something in his heart and mind and other parts of his anatomy was telling him he wouldn't find the answers he wanted here. Hopefully he'd find SOMETHING, he wasn't quite eager to call this whole thing a wash, but something was... calling him. To Etruria. Maybe it was just a strange feeling a deja vu, maybe it was a weird dream he can't quite recall, floating at the edges of his memory playfully tugging at the corners every time he dared to let his mind roam free. When he thought of nothing, he thought of Etruria. Well not Etruria specifically, but also kind of? It was hard to put into words, it worked much better as a fleeting thought hiding between his conscious and unconscious somehow in both yet not in either.
He noticed Edboy had taken to waving frantically, the rapid movements catching his attention from the corner of his eye. Oh dear, he had Ostia fever. "Hrm?" He made a questionlike noise as he looked in the distance, and... oh there was someone over there. Must be glasses. Probably just went to relieve himself, like Elias said. Oh Elias, you are so insightful sometimes.

Oya was never one for tracking or any other skill used in hunting on land, but Oya had keen eyes. His time out at see taught him the value of eyesight. Knowing which flag flew over a ship was the difference between being ambushed by a Eturian ship or linking up with a fellow raider to do business. As the group began to walk on their path oya spotted the wayward shaman. He was a good bit off, but he was their.
"Hey their is some movement in the distance", spoke Oya in his lady voice as he pointed toward Reid. Even though Oya had confirmed who he was with his eye sight he did not drop his guard. He had heard rumors about the dead coming back to life in Lycia and attacking travelers and other people. It would not surprise him if Reid was in fact a undead and was shuffling their way with the intentions of devouring their flesh and ripping open their rib cage. Ready for battle twirled his axes to remind himself of their weight.
The weight of Oya's axes brought a reminder back to Oya's mind. So far he was the only person here who did not study the art of magic. Reid, Edrick, Elias and even the new chick were all magic users. He was the only one with no formal magic training. That meant that he was behind everyone here in knowledge of the arcane a topic that played a very important role in their journey. If he ran into a magical anomaly Oya would not be able to pick it out, nor would he know what is so special about it. The only thing that would probably alert him is some kind of light or a shiver down his spine. Beyond that Oya was as green as some of the plants he collected. The very idea of it ate at him. Knowledge was power, and at this moment Oya was weak. He needed to know more, and to understand magic, despite the fact that he did not have it himself.

Mila stared at the ground and tracked. The polite shaman asked a question about her tracking, that she didn't quite register. Her focus was on the task at hand. So she led them on, until the group came up upon a figure in the distance. Judging from the color and appearance of the person in front of her, it was most likely the missing member of the troop. Good. He looks safe and sound.
"My guess is that's him right over there. You guys can walk ahead. My back and neck need a moment here."
She lifted stretched a bit after tracking the missing member. Some dull cracking noise emerged from her spine, as she straightened herself back up. She then tilted her head side to side. Too many late nights hunched over the library desk. After a bit her gaze found the floor again, but this time with foot prints that weren't anyone's in the group.
She tilted her head quizzically and crouched down to get a better look. Bone walkers. She followed them for a bit with her eyes. She glanced over at the group who were now ahead of her.
"Hmm.. they don't look fresh. But it's hard to tell with this terrain." She muttered. Bone walker foot prints were common in this barren land. She followed the prints for a bit but still with in the visible vicinity of the others. The mage felt something off. Deja vu?
She peered out into the distance and realized why she felt strange. She was here before. The crack, crevasse, hole, thing, that she was leading them too originally. It was there, just over the little ridge around them. Good! I should really come up with a better name for it, besides hole thing.
"I wonder if the Shaman wandered off into this direction cause he sensed something about it." She shrugged. No sense in worrying about why he wandered off. I should tell them, this thing is here then. Better make a mark on the ground of some kind.
She made her way back to the others occasionally dragging a line through the dirt with heel of her shoe. It left enough of an impression in the black earth for it to be visible to everyone. She caught up to the small group.
"Oh, I found the hole. Thing. And some bone walker tracks leading into it too. Not sure if they were fresh though. Bone foot prints are hard to judge. Made a track back to it with my boots. So all we have to do is follow it and were at the pit. Once your missing shaman friend rejoins us we can continue on."

It didn't take long for Reid and the group to meet somewhere in the middle. Reid kept his arms close to him, his appearance was still that of when he heard that voice call out to him, shaken. He had noticed that there was another female in the group, he took a moment to study her appearance before look at the others. "I'm sorry about wondering off like that, I got lost in thought and my body knew we must continue on our journey so it took action while my mind was occupied. I should be more careful knowing there's danger lurking around every corner. I did discover somethi-" Reid was cut off mid sentance by the voice once again.
"We hunger for more, feed us. Use your magic to slaughter your friends"
By now it was more than obvious to him he was being targeted because he had dabbled in the arts of Elder Magic. He had shuddered at the sound of the voice again as well as it's request. He turned his focus on Edrick, who also practiced the same type of magic as he did. Elias was one of the anima folks while Oya was just a brute with a weapon. He knew nothing of the new girl, but by her appearance she was different than Oya, perhaps just a traveler.
He had stopped in the middle of a word just a moment ago, he knew that would cause great alarm, as well as his reaction after stopping. "Edrick, since we separated have you heard a voice that no others could? One calling you by name, telling you to feed it. Or even now, to feed it and attack the others?"

Elias looked down at the ground with a twisted look of contemplation on his face, thinking about it. Elias was a man well versed in a surprising array of topics. Monsters, magic, herbalism, cartography, cooking, needlepoint, it's fair to say he spent the majority of his childhood learning as opposed to playing with friends (he didn't have) and he moved so often all around the country that he rarely had time to make any to begin with. His father was a scholar, often times buying books about subject he himself will never care for but for the off chance of 'one day he might'. It fed right into that insatiable thirst for information that he instilled in his son, knowingly or not.
The point here wasn't to brag, it was to bring in to light just how strange it was to come across a topic he knew absolutely nothing about. For example even if elder magic was foreign it was not incomprehensible, there were rules and guidelines that he could follow. Even not being a practitioner of it, he could make out the shapes, the rhyme and the reason. Even as they shift behind the curtain, casting dubious shadows that seem to churn every moment, there was a sort of pace to it a type of order in its chaos. At least that's what he thought anyways. Maybe it was tricking him? Teasing the mage into thinking he knew something he did not? Wouldn't be the first time the world played a trick on him.
Of course that wasn't the point, his mind wandered, the point he was trying to make as he had absolutely no idea how this tracking thing worked. Turtle said she saw bonewalker tracks leading to the hole they were headed too, bonewalkers eh? He read about those, not meeting them in person but he knew of them. Similar to remnant and the undead, only sheered of their flesh and simply the bones of some fallen creature moving on their own will. Bones that walk, simple name for a simple creature, no? They were more swift and stronger then remnants, but also much more frail. They were dangerous but rarely encountered in such huge numbers as the other type of undead, which was fortunate a whole hoard of bonewalkers would likely be very trying.
"Bonewalkers you say?" Elias said, touching his chin lightly. "I'm not sure my Ice will be effective on creatures lacking flesh." He added, tilting his head with a small hum. Maybe his Gaea spell would be more effective, shattering those bones with the force of earth. He was still inexperienced in using it but ahhhh Elias is a fast learner.
Glasses returned and Elias grinned. "See Edboy? He was fine." Elias sounded pleased as punch. A grin that grew somewhat concerned as Reid looked disturbed. He stopped speaking, looking as though something had just interrupted him, but Elias heard nothing. It was strange, and then he asked if Edrick could hear the same thing. Elder magic, the more he thought he understood the more it pulled away mocking him. Elias was far too knowledgeable to know that he didn't know everything, and that extended especially to a dubious entity of the void. If Reid said he heard a voice, Elias was willing to bet dollars to donuts that he did hear something. "It told you to attack us? Now that isn't very nice. You're not entertaining those thoughts are you? It's not 'compelling' you, because I know magic is weird and can sometimes do that. If this is magic, which I'm guessing it is, because that sounds magical as all out." He theorized for a bit, but lacked the fundamental knowledge on elder magic to make a proper thesis. Shaking his head he spoke up again in concern. "Are you alright?"

Edrick just kind of blanked out as Elias began to speak about this theory in magic. He really should be listening to what he was saying. Magic was always fun to talk about and learning more about it was just one of the best feelings ever. But he couldn't for the life of him get himself to focus for long amounts of time lately. Why was he feeling like this? Was it after effects from. . . then? He had thought those had ended. Yeah, they had to be gone, it had to have been temporary because of his accident in the arena. It shouldn't have any long term effects. Could it though?
When his mind cleared again and began to focus he focused on Reid talking to him. It seemed that Reid was hearing voices? Uh oh. That wasn't good. "A voice? Um, no, I haven't. I've been kinda zoned out though so maybe I missed it. Have you been overusing your magic lately? You may have taken too much nether energy into you and it manifested itself as an entity?" He was just sort of poking around there but it was the best that he could come up with, it seemed completely plausible considering that people lose themselves to the void. What is stopping them from floating around in there?
"Er, I don't really know what to say about the voices besides to ignore them and to keep us updated when you hear anything. That might be the best." Great, voices. Why? Did Reid really delve that deep into the darkness already? He didn't mention them at the start of the journey. Maybe he just now thought to mention them to the group because this was a quite acceptable group of scholars. Mostly.
"Oh and Elias, extreme cold might be able to make the bones brittle so that they can be smashed easier. So if we do get caught don't count it out." And bonewalkers were there too? Hopefully they were just old prints. he didn't like how this place made him felt and staying here longer than necessary would be a bad thing. Maybe this place actually was cursed.

So Reid showed back up, that was good. However when he got back he was talking about hearing weird noises and talking with unknown people. Just what Oya and the group needed. A dark magic user who was close to going over the deep end. Oya was not a expert on magic, mainly because he did not use magic, but he did do a little bit of theoretical studies when he was still sailing on his mothers ship. You would be surprised what books you can find on a pirate vessel. Though you would need to get to them before some ignorant scallywag decides to use one of them as toilet paper. From the information Oya read in the text book he understand that shamans could loss themselves in the darkness. What it exactly meant Oya had no idea. He just knew its side effects were insanity, depression, suicidal thoughts, and phenomenal cosmic power. So if the guy did go bonkers don't expect a easy victory. It was going to be a rough ride ahead.
"Hey are you alright", spoke Oya toward Reid. "You are not going to go insane on us or try to sacrifice our internal organs to some dark god or anything. Mainly because I like my organs on the inside and I have to tell you if you attack me I will kill you. No offense, it is just me keeping myself ... well you know... not a hunk of bleeding flesh used in a satanic ritual."

Mila looked up, at Reid, with a slight pout to her face. Mila knew next next to nothing about dark magic. Yeah sure she would occasionally bump into the a shaman or two along her travels but never have proper conversations about the magical profession they chose. And shaman-ery if she could call it that was kind of forbidden in Eutria, after the prophet's rein. Is he still in charge? She wondered. And it wasn't like the tiny magical academy was exactly knowledgeable on the subject of dark magic. They were mostly focused on studying Anima or Holy magic. And that didn't matter either, as what ever research they do gets confiscated anyway by the holy powers of the Theocracy. Right? Right.. I think.
All she could do was listen to what the others said and compare it to her knowledge of Anima magic. Whenever a shaman uses too much of there magic, apparently they start hearing things. Sounds simple enough. Gods knows how many "things" she's heard when spiritually or mentally drained. But there seemed to be more of a psychological aspect involved with Dark Magic, that anima magic lacked. She was kind of curious to learn more, but knew better then to butt in asking all sorts of annoying questions. At least until after the shaman in question was feeling better.
Be that as it may, it seemed that Reid was hearing voices of some sort, that wanted to be fed. Which raised so many red flags. But before she could open her mouth and ask if he was okay, it seemed that everyone else had asked the same thing. Well Good. But did it take all of us to say it consecutively? His yes or no answer won't change no matter how many times you ask.
She pulled out from her bag a small satchel of little treats. They weren't really much, just a small assortment of dried fruits, nuts, and some bits of chocolate. She opened it up and held it out in her palm. She held it out for the group so everyone could take a little bit.
"I'm not entirely sure what's going on. But I do know, if your hearing things, that want to be fed... uhm I offer trail mix." She took a dried peach wedge and popped it in her mouth.

Despite the concerning voices Reid has been hearing the conversation has been all over the place, he didn't want to be the sole focus of their discussion but the matter that he brought up was just as important, if not more. "We all may be scholars to different degrees, but one thing we all know is certain, the negative effects of Elder Magic. I had studied under a well known Elder Magic user in the area he had lived in, he had already shown signs of 'losing' himself to the art by time I began my studies. I do no recall him ever mentioning a voice calling out to him, but when he did feel I was ready to begin using Elder Magic he had me form a pact. He had helped me 'contact' what he had called 'The Abyss', I had heard a distant voice make an offer, my mind for power. It would not answer any questions I had asked, it only responded when I had agreed.
"I'm not a hundred percent certain the voice I'm hearing now is the same one, but I do believe it is. I'm not sure about Edrick, but myself I have used Elder Magic less times than fingers I have. Perhaps the reason it's calling out to me and not him is how little I've actually used it." Reid had chuckled at Mila's offer of trail mix to the voice. "I think much like myself, it would refuse your offer. There are many questions to be answered, I do not think we can do that standing around like this." Reid had suggested to move on.

"I am going to have to second that motion", spoke Oya. It was the first time he had heard it from the horses mouth. When Reid began to speak of the power of dark magic you could not pull the young Oya away. Oya at one point wanted to study magic. Dark Magic was on his list when he was younger. If it was not for his mother shooting down his idea when he was but a lad he too would might be on that path. Still it was interesting. He wondered what was this abyss. What was this power that all dark magic users drew from. Was it some creature from the beyond or simply a force of nature. All the books Oya had read spoke of it as both, a thing and a force. One thing was sure thought, Elder Magic was dangerous.
"Umm Reid", spoke Oya in his female tone as he walked up to the shaman. "If you don't mind would you put a more detail version of what your felt in your notes. If I remember correctly you offered to give us a copy of them once the expedition was complete. I spoke my interest in them before, but now I find myself even more enthralled."
Opportunity was knocking. So many questions, so many possibilities. Oya needed to know. What was going on here, what was elder magic. How could it be used? How did it effect the mind? Is there a way to reverse it? How powerful can one get? What is the true power the darkness holds? The pirate could barely hold up his act. On the surface he looked fine, but bellow Oya was going crazy with excitement. So much information, so much knowledge. If he played his cards right he could get so much more than a simple tool. Maybe it still could be possible for him to tame the darkness and bring it under his control. Then again is the price worth the power. The threat of being called still looms over Reid and possibly Edrick as well.

"Well suit yourself good sir." She munched what she wanted of her mix before wrapping it back up and putting it back in her bag. At Reid's suggestion the group moved on. Mila followed the pattern she made with her boot back to the hole. She stopped just short of the giant maw of the earth. A cold chill crawled up her spine. She kept staring deep into the abyss of the hole. It wasn't exactly any different from every other craggy rock that surrounded them but just for the fact that it was large hole that they would crawl in that upset her. For years now Mila's had to struggle with the nightmares of the cave in in Nabata.
She suddenly had a great need to sit down. And so she did. Her head in her hands. She didn't see it herself, but she was shaking. She didn't want to go down into the deep dark pit. Even if it was for science. The scene kept playing back in her head. The cave in. Except now her vision was filled with the bodies of her traveling companions rather then the ones who died in Nabata. She shook her head.
"No. No. Not again."
This sort of behavior might have seemed suspicious. But the young mage was legitimately terrified.
"I..Do not want to go into the deep dark.. no.. not the deep dark." She was rocking slightly. Come on Mila. Make yourself civil. Focus. The rational side of her tried to ask for sensibility. But her body wouldn't fully respond. She was able to grab hold of the rock and try to keep herself steady. But she was still upset, pale, in a cold sweat.
"It.. did.. not end well. It did not end well last time. I'm.. sorry I.. cannot.. I cannot g..go with you guys any farther then this. I... I.. do.. not want to be crushed.. no.. not again." She took a deep breath.
"A.. while back. S..some mages and I were exploring some ruins.. th..they c.h..ch caved in. I.. h-haven't been good with deep... d-d-ark places since." She shook her head. This is a pathetic display Mila. COME ON. BACK BONE! As much as she tried to encourage herself she couldn't shake off the fear. She threw her hood back on. To hide her face and the small tears that were now starting to stream down her cheeks.
"I need.. to be away from here.. and calm myself. I again. S-Sorry."
The mage was happy to have found some companions but was forced to leave them. She was successful in guiding them to the crack within the earth. After a small wave good by she left the group. --
Exit Thread.

Reid was normally not the type to jump head first into anything that required physical prowess but this was a different case. There were many questions and no answers, but there were answers down there but to which questions Reid wasn't sure of, but he would love to connect the two together. Reid also wasn't a selfish person, he also knew this was a situation that would further Edrick and Elias' research as much as his own but they couldn't risk all of their lives in the event of a cave in and all of their hard work lost to the world. Removing his bag he set it on the ground next to his feet. "We can't risk all of us going in there, if it proves to be fatal I would greatly appreciate it if one of you guys takes my notes and pick up where I left off in my studies." Walking to the opening he studied it looking for places to put his hands and feet as if he knew what he was doing, which he didn't.
"Here goes nothing" He thought to himself as he lowered his body and began to slowly descend into the hole. His climb down went smoothly, kinda. There was a few times he thought he would fall to his death when a hand or foot slipped. Surprisingly enough there was some light pouring in from the opening, all he could really see was a tunnel so he placed one hand on the wall and one in front of him and slowly began to walk down it. Before he left where the light could reach he suddenly stopped, he wasn't sure why but he felt the presence of something before him. Lowering his hands he began to stare into the darkness.
"If thou gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will also gaze into thee." Goodness! Something had spoke to Reid, he wasn't sure who or what had said that but he was sure of one thing. It couldn't be friendly. "Who's there?" Reid had called out, except he had noticed his voice had echoed but the other voice didn't. Was it the same one as before? It couldn't be, this one was more mellow, calm, and far more scary. "I am one of the 'Old Ones'." Reid had thought about it for a moment. His brain quickly scanning his memory of all the text he had read but he didn't recall seeing anything about the Old Ones.
"Old ones... hmmm... That's something I haven't encountered in my studies before. Could you enlighten me on who that is?" The voice had let out a small chuckle, which was even more disturbing. "That is none of your concern at this time, you may get your answers at a later date." The answer had chilled Reid to the bone, he wasn't sure what it meant but he didn't want to stick around to find out, his fight or flight instinct kicked in and he turned around and ran. He didn't stop running till he got to the wall he climbed down and began to climb back up, not worrying about his safety. Once he made it to the top he didn't speak till after he grabbed his bag and placed it on his back. "There's something down there, I do not wish to speak about it. I just want to leave, now."
