I'm not trying to sound rude, but it would be best if you start with just recolors, move on to splicing, then start working on customs. That way you start to learn as you go vs starting with the hardest part.

Wow. I'm beginning to get quite mixed messages. So, I see that it is slightly creepy, but I think Kenshin is just insinuating that it is bad, and that I should feel bad. I'll make another point: I do not just want a recolour, I will not sink that low for any oc.

Then move on to splicing. Then move on again to customization. There's a saying right? Crawl before walking?

I'll make another point: I do not just want a recolour, I will not sink that low for any oc. I'm not saying you should, or have to, use a recolor. I'm saying you should start there as a learning point because it's very basic and easy to learn. You'll gain an understanding of shading from that. Learning how to splice will help you with being able to see what works and what doesn't, most of my splices are trail and error. I have what I want in mind and I play around with things similar to it just to see what looks good or doesn't. You need to learn how to walk before you can run a marathon. Edit: I did a quick, and very sloppy spice job to show what I mean. All I did was recolor the hair, armor, and eyes. Then I added the hair to the face, then the whole head to the armor. I had the head layer on top of the armor, it kept going and didn't look right so I had erased it till it appeared to be going behind the armor naturally. It's not the prettiest thing out there, but it's more than just a simple recolor and looks decent(if you close one eye across the room maybe). If there isn't a hair style you want to use, you can even splice them together. Example:

My first splices and recolors were absolutely abhorrent, but I was determined to make my own sprites with my own creative vision. Constantly I was updating mugs and practicing with stuff I just thought would look cool. Don't let the learning curve get you down: it just takes time and practice. The hardest part is sticking through with not just the spriting, but attending this site. It helps me to keep this as a homepage.

Well, my threads usually take days to update ( thanks to how quiet the board has been lately), so I usually attend the site, so theres no worries there. Don't worry, I'm working on another mug that wont be as unsettling.

What I found out early on is that hair is singlehandedly the most difficult thing to make OC and splicing is the best option for that. Now putting a few spliced hairstyles together and matching it up to make it flow natural is tough, but not impossible.
For faces, it's best to find ones that face in the same direction of side to side as well as up and down. There are many mugs with a wide array of directions they are facing. Matching a pair will usually provide the best results and keep a face looking like it wants to run away from the head it is on.
Positioning the eyes, nose, and mouth also goes into a bit of artistic measure and knowledge of anatomy. Sometimes I'll mull over a face, moving it around until it "looks right" proportionally.
I look forward to your next creation!
