Joel strode into the Bern port of Vienasa, Dee on his shoulders, Mel, armor, and Zero behind him. The port was situated between a break in the mountains that surround the coast of Bern, and it was here that Joel hoped they would be able to gain passage aboard a ship heading to the Western Isles. From there, the group would find a way into Etruria, and maybe find a way to locate Dee's uncle. Joel's shirt was amazingly clean, and surprisingly unscratchy; those men at the clothing store had access to some quality cloth. Strapped to his back, as always, was his axe. The giant of a man received stares from most people, but smiles from shipbuilders. "I've helped them in the past for reduced cost, cutting down lumber for them." he explained.
After leading the way to the local inn, a place called the Gray Lady, Joel stopped. "All right. You guys should probably rest up for a while. If you want to come with me, I'm heading off to a friend of mine who might be able to put a good word in for us. You know... Get us on a ship. Anyone want to come, or do you guys want to rest up for a little while?"

Joel was SO BIG. At first Dee was creeped out that he made her ride on his shoulders, but she could see everything from up here. Joel was kinda like a big teddy bear, he was probably just mean on occasion. "Um, I'll stay here, if that's okay..."
She hopped down from his shoulders. "Just make sure you don't leave me behind, all right?" She sat at one of the tables in the inn and began thumbing through one of her books. All of these researchers seemed so close to the answer, but then back away at the last second out of fear. What pansies.

"If its okay with people, I'd like to see if there's an arena in town. fighting is the only way I can get closer to my goal. If there isn't one, I'll come back" Vashnar said as he left the inn and into the busy street.
Looking up and down the street, he then decided to head to his right, due to noticing all sorts of people down that way; pirates, bootleggers, peddlers, performers, merchants selling spice, merchants selling tools, merchants selling things to other merchants, gambling, drinking, singing. You think it, its being sold, bought, traded or stolen.
After walking for a bit past offers and bribes, Vashnar found what he was looking for: An arena! unlike the one back in the previous town, this one was made in a square shape, and out of stone with a banner saying "Clash of Warriors" in bold, red lettering. Finding the arena master, Vashnar showed him money and asked to fight in the next match. "A knight, eh? yeah, you'll do." the man said to him with a smirk on his face. "Next match is in five minutes, so make sure you're ready."

Mel turned and glanced over at the foreign surroundings of the city slowly taking it all in. It was more lively than the other city by far, or maybe she just missed the lively bustle of the city. She disliked so much of it...but maybe she just missed the people. Such easy targets...not even paying the slightest attention to their rather heavy purses tempting her with every clink of the coins encased safely inside.
She watched Dee hop off into the inn and sighed, if the child was there she wouldn't stay either, the child would be hard to be near, they were all so odd and ignorant. She had no idea about such things like adolescence but....she observed that they were ignorant...and self centered...so in theory they were...because she had seen it more than three times like in that saying she once heard.
Then armor left too, for the life of her she could not remember that knights name, it was most probably unimportant anyways. She wondered if he would be left behind if late back from the arena. No one would notice his disappearance anyways, she nearly walked over him numerous times already, he could at least make himself stand out more...somehow...
Mel considered walking around and going about business as usual and relieving some people of their heavy purses. Though...she was not in that mood...strangely... "Eh, I suppose I will join you Joel" she called after him as she made her way over to him.

Joel nodded as the group split up. Armor was making his way to the arena, Zero would stay with Dee back here at the inn (while he wasn't a fan of leaving the two together for very long, they couldn't very well leave Dee by herself), and Mel and himself were going to procure passage aboard a ship. "A'right, let's go." he rumbled, and, with his long strides (taking one step for every two of Mel's), started to make his way across the town. It took the pair fifteen minutes of non-stop walking before Joel ceased forward momentum. "Lemme see... He should live around here somewhere."
Joel's head swiveled around the row of houses they were now between. The smell of salt air was heavy in the air, leaving the scent of the flowers growing in pots outside a few of the houses unnoticed. The houses themselves were stacked together, each with a minuscule yard (really just a patch of grass or weeds, depending on the house) in front of their wooden walls, doors, and cheap glass windows. One man, with his sun-burned back to them, was squatting in his yard, planting a flower. Joel rolled his neck, producing a cracking noise, and then stepped forward to talk to the man. "Hello there! Can you direct me to the residence of a shipbuilder, Jared?" Joel asked.
The sunburned man stood up, rolled his shoulders in much the same fashion as Joel, the corded muscles in his back showing. And then he turned, showing to Joel and Mel a man of about five foot nine with short khaki-colored hair and goatee, sunburnt skin, corded muscles, and smile that showed off his surprisingly clean teeth. "Aye, pr'haps I can. Whatcha need him for?" the man asked in a gravelly voice. However, his ocean blue eyes were twinkling and a laugh was already escaping his lips as the two men stepped forward and clasped each other by the forearms. "By god, Joel, it's good ta see ya again! And I see you've brought a lady friend, eh?" Jared boomed, and then laughed again.
Joel rolled his eyes and took a step back, looking Jared up and down. "You haven't changed a bit, Jar head." the giant said, shaking his head, seemingly oblivious to Jared's toothy grin. "And no, she's just an acquaintance. We're travelling together, along with a group of..." Joel stopped, counting for a moment. "Five people. But we'll get to the reason behind my visit in a moment; first, introductions. Mel, I would like you to meet my friend, Jared. He's into the business of designing, building, and selling ships. And apparently..." Joel raised and eyebrow. "Gardening?" Jared smiled sheepishly, shrugging his shoulders.

Mel kept up with Joel's large strides with ease taking two steps for each of his own walking along for a nice while her head turning side to side taking in the seaside city's sights. The air was thick with the salty smell of the sea and her eyes widened in surprise as they passed the docks staring out at the sea. It was so vast, endless, stretching on past the horizon for ever and ever. She wondered what lay beyond it, somehow it almost seemed mystical thinking of such things like distant lands. Though she focused more on colors, what new of those lay there.
Then...they passed by and the mystical blue sea was gone and replaced by rows of nearly identical houses, each one with a shrub or two in the front yard. They were all mundane and boring, like an army of soldiers that she had passed once in Bern, all looking the same. Though, one caught her eye with vibrant flowers blooming in front and a large tanned man kneeling in front and working in the yard.
Sh followed Joel like a ghost watching him embrace the man her eyes looking to him curiously. He looked rather battle hardened, it surprised her in a sense with Joel calling himself a pacifist and all that but...she supposed there must have been a point when he was otherwise, it only made sense to her. Standing in the shadows Mel watched them silently her eyes curious as to how they knew each other but Joel did not seem like one to speak much of himself.
Once introduced she took a step forward shaking his hand with a firm grip as she stared up at his face. Placing a soft smile on her lips like she had seen many other do she looked up at him through her lashes, expression soft and innocent. "Hello" she said softly pronouncing it with a a slight accent that was unknown to a great many including herself.

The book that Dee was currently reading, "Unkicking the Bucket," was one man's trial in bringing his wife back to life. It was written in a journal format, making for a very compelling read.
Unfortunately, the man went insane from some of his experiments, and the book was printed for humor purposes only. Dee had to admit that some of the writing near the end was very funny. His constant paranoia and repeating sentences made reading the book worth it.
Too bad insanity was a side effect of his ideas. Yet another thing to take off the list. At this rate, Dee would find that there was no way, but there had to be a way, right?

Jared gave a wide, toothy smile to Mel. "Aye, it's nice to meet ya!" The man then turned to Joel, placing one hand on his forehead, wiping away a little bead if sweat. "So, I assume you'll be calling up a favor, eh? Not just visitin' an old friend?" Jared stated, looking Joel over a couple times. The giant of a man shifted uuncomfortably where he stood.
"No... I've come for a favor. Seeing you is an added bonus, of course." Joel replied, and then scratched his chest. "My companions and I are heading to Etruria." "That's all good an' well, Joel, but what do you need me for?" "Simple. I want to know if you still have connections with the captains of the ships you build."
It was Jared's turn to shift uneasily where he stood. "Joel, ya know I do, but... Do ya really think any of them will let ya on board their vessels? Most of 'em are of the superstitious kind; they won't be very keen on letting a lady on board their ships." Jared responded after a moment's hesitation. " Utter nonsense, naturally. Some of the best sailors I've dealt with were women... But that's beside the point. Lemme think... No, he's been out at sea for a few weeks now... The Ghoul Runner left port two days ago..." The shipbuilder whispered for a moment, mumbling uncomprehendibly to himself various names and dates. And then he stopped entirely. "Aye, Joel. I've just thought of it, and ya ain't gonna like it, not one little bit. The Mistdrifter is in port, and set to sail in three day's time to the Western Isles."
Joel's face darkened. "That's the ship I helped you build, right?" Jared nodded. "The one Weedy captains?" Another nod, and a groan from Joel. "I suppose, if it's our only choice..." "It is. Weedy's the only one I have connections with in town right now. And with him leaving soon... I don't think anyone's set to return for a month, at least."

Zero glanced about the area lazy as he let out a contented yawn, and stretched his arms out and sat firmly down upon a hand-crafted wooden chair in the main lobby of the Inn. His eyes darting about the area, looking for something to do to put some form of end to his boredom. However it was no use...he was stuck waiting at the Inn. Joel and Mel had gone off seeking a ship to the Western Isles,Knight-person was headed off for the arena,...and he was stuck in a boring old in with a young girl who more than likely detested his very presence.
Still,Zero needed something to do so he could kill some time, while waiting for the others to return to the Inn so they could proceed. He really had wished he spoke out earlier that day and had gone along with Joel cause at least he'd be doing something. Yawning lightly, he craned his neck slightly towards the left-side and caught a glimpse of Dee reading her books yet again, and thought maybe he could get some combat practice in afterall. He calmly got up and stretched his arms as he gingerly approached her.
"Excuse me Dee, may I ask what it is that your reading about? You seem to be quite engrossed in your books day after day from what I've seen. Just so you know however, there is nothing to fear about a Sacaen like myself. If I was a savage, wouldn't I have attacked you or the others by now?"

Dee was approached by the savage yet again. She decided that ignoring him wouldn't solve anything, and would probably cause him to attempt to talk to her more than she wanted to.
"Can you not take a hint when somebody doesn't want to talk, Blueberry?" she said, aggravated. Though that was an awesome name she had decided for him. She needed to think of cute nicknames for everyone else. That would probably make her feel a little better about traveling with them at least.
Blueberry constantly reminding her that he was Sacean WASN'T HELPING. But she conceded and told him what the book was, "It's a journal." she said, and that was all, trying to return to it.

Zero was taken aback slightly as he squinted in disspleasure at Dee's nickname for him. He simply sighed lightly, as he brought his palm to his face, shaking his head in dissapointment for such a comment.
Blueberry? My name happens to be Zero,it's my true nickname and it's the name I have stuck with for a couple years now little girl! Also,I've been trying to be friendly to you for days now! If we're going to be traveling together I at least hope you'll show me some acknowledgement please. Besides...you'll thank me soon enough when you see what I'm capable of in combat, long as you can back us up with that magic stuff of yours."

"But Blueberry is a much cuter nickname, Zero is overused." She wasn't sure what he was talking about 'trying to be friendly to you for days now' was. Was that all of his talking while they were walking here? She hadn't been listening at all, just reading.
"What are you talking about, magic stuff? How could someone as young as me be a mage?" She hadn't practiced her magic at all near any of them. Only one of her books was magical, and it wasn't particularly distinguishable from the rest. She remembered someone saying something like that when they first met, but she had assumed they were talking to someone else.
She wasn't surprised that Blueberry would claim to be great in combat. He was a savage after all.

"Hey Drake, I've got someone here who wants to talk business with ya!" Jared's voice called out. The trio had made their way across town once again to a tavern near the docks with a nameplate so faded the name could not be made out. The place was poorly lit and surprisingly empty, with only a few tables filled. Off in one corner, a thin, blond man wearing a ridiculous hat (think stereotypical pirate hat with a large feather stuck in it) and coat sat by himself, absentmindedly staring down at his drink. At the sound of his name, the man looked up, his grey eyes glinting. The man looked Jared over a few times, and then a wide smile, revealing perfectly white teeth, spread across his face.
"Ah, it certainly is good to see you again Jared. Might I..." the main trailed off as he seemed to notice Joel's hulking figure for the first time. The man's eyebrows shot down, and he glared at Joel for a good thirty seconds. "Why is the illiterate giant here?"
"Good to see you as well, Cap'n Drake." Joel rumbled, folding his arms in front of his chest. "I'm as happy as you are about this, but you're the only real option available." The Nabataean then sat himself across from the captain, and, though Captain Drake was only about five inches shorter than Joel, the captain was dwarfed by Joel's sheer size. The two stared each other down for almost a full minute, Joel's face barely restraining his feelings of anger and Drake's lit up with a combination of a smirk and a sneer.
"And why should I help you, of all people?" The captain raised his drink to his mouth, calmly taking a sip of whatever liquid the cup contained. Jared shifted uncomfortably beside Mel. Joel frowned, and then leaned back, relaxing a little. "Because you are still in debt to me, captain." the giant said, uncharacteristically quietly, causing Captain Drake to nearly spew his drink everywhere in surprise.

Jasper emerged from the arena after long day of testing his skills. It had been two weeks since he left his hometown by after hearing his mentor's dying words.
Jasper had won a fair few matches against opponents that had surely seen more battle then he had, he thanked his thorough training for his survival. He looked in his purse and found he couldn't say his fortune wasn't reflected in his netto winnings, some big losses, the medical bill and replacing the lance that had broken on his final opponent left him with nary more then he started out with.
Nevertheless, he felt he could not stomach spending much longer in this village, going through the same routine. He supposed he should celebrate his victories with some alcohol somewhere, no mother around to stop him. He was a man now. With that thought in mind, Jasper entered the Gray Lady.

When Vashnar stepped into the arena, he looked across the field and saw his opponent being another knight. Well, this will be interesting he thought to himself as he bowed to the knight, who bowed back as a sign of equals. "Begin!" the arena master yelled as the crowd roared with excitement. as the other knight unstrapped his chest shield so he could jog to him, Vashnar just started to run over to the knight. Before the other knight could brace himself Vashnar rammed into him, knocking him over as stars flashed around his eyes. When the opponent's head cleared, he saw Vashnar's figure looming over him and tried to stab him in the leg, which made Vashnar step back. Vashnar thrust his lance forward, stabbing the man in the arm, closing his eyes as the man screamed. Getting back up on his feet and leaving the chest shield on the ground, the man started to thrust his spear at Vashnar, who blocked it with his chest shield as he made thrusts of his own, who the man parried. When the man made a mistake after Vashnar's third thrust, Vashnar's lance found itself buried in the man's gut on the fourth one, making him cough up blood. "Yield good sir, and this won't go on" Vashnar offered, pulling out his spear. "And what? lose what little honor I have left? I REFUSE!" the man yelled as he charged Vashnar.
The Man fell backwards after getting his right leg stabbed by Vashnar, who then pulled it out and stood victorious. As the crowd cheered, a cleric rushed into the arena and started to heal the knight while Vashnar made his way over to the arena master, who had a small bag of gold for him. "Pleasure doing business with you" the man said as Vashnar counted the money, nodded, and left. Making his way back down the street, he entered the Gray Lady and noticed that Zero was sitting next to Dee, who was ignoring him by reading a book. Joel and Mel weren't back yet, so Vashnar sat down next to them said to them "Hey guys! I'm back, and won in the arena!"
